Letter from the President As I begin my tenure as Elim Park’s President and CEO, I am humbled by the magnificent home and community Elim Park has become over the past 110 years. The Elim Park founders set out to serve by “honoring God in all we do.” I am amazed and encouraged to hear these foundational principles still spoken on a daily basis over a century later.

Elim Park’s name comes from a Bible verse in the Old Testament where the twelve tribes of Israel, thirsty and tired, found rest and refreshment at a place called Elim. As I’ve come to know the community on a very personal level, the name continues to represent our culture of being a vibrant haven to live, work, and play.

My role is not about me, it’s not about who I replaced, and it won’t be about who carries on after me. My role is about continuing the incredible history established over the past 110 years and the legacy that will continue to be built over the next 110 years. I am excited to provide vision, leadership, and encouragement to continue to develop a wide array of independent living choices that are attractive to today’s consumers.

Elim Park has been blessed through its leaders, staff, pastors, board members, volunteers, and residents who are committed to building a home where people want to work and live. It is a privilege to serve besides so many dedicated and talented team members. This is a vibrant community that integrates contemporary living with extraordinary health care services. With the stability and inspiration of the past behind me, I am excited to step into the bright future awaiting Elim Park.

Passing the Baton Throughout his long career at Elim Park, President and CEO Ron Dischinger relied on a collection of well-established principles to direct and ensure the future success of the community. In 2017, as he looked towards retirement, Ron introduced Brian Bedard, the incoming President and CEO, to the values and goals that set Elim Park apart. Elim Park has always been an innovative community that remains stable because it has a strong understanding of what it does and why it does it. As a person of faith, Brian wholeheartedly embraces these guiding principles. He looks forward to strengthening the culture of honoring God, honoring the staff, and honoring the community and using that foundation to pursue a revolutionary future.

Say “Hello” to Some More New Faces Jenna Dean shapes her decisions around a love for people and a desire to grow. A background in athletics and desire to help people led her to pursue bio kinetics in college. From there she taught group classes at a private gym. Management experience at a second gym opened the door for her to come to Elim Park.

She credits the smooth transition to Barbara’s thoroughness and attention to detail. “Working here is different,” she says. “You come to work in people’s homes. You can build relationships instead of having a revolving door.” Community is one of Jenna’s favorite parts of working at the Elim Park wellness center.

When asked what attracted her to Elim Park, Jenna says she was impressed that previous Wellness Director, Barbara Womer, held the position for twelve years. That indicated stability and a healthy environment that appealed to Jenna.

“This place is a gem,” Jenna says. “We bring the fun! We bring the energy!” Her vision is to see the wellness center utilized to its full capacity. “I want it to be full of people all the time, enjoying exercise, and having fun together.”

Christian Services

After twelve years of experience in the food service industry in a variety of settings, Chef Andrew DaCruz has found Elim Park to be a new and exciting environment. “We break a lot of stereotypes here. It’s very unique and innovative.”

Teamwork is a key element as Andrew assumes responsibility as Executive Chef. “Nicole Morales and Frank Cormany, the sous chefs, have lots of experience,” he explains. “I can rely on them and other seasoned members of the team. They’ve all been a big help.”

“Everyone is an active participant here,” Andrew says. He makes a point of mingling with the people eating at the Elim Park restaurants. He encourages the cooks to do the same. Mingling and receiving live feedback helps the team customize their efforts.

“We can care, but really, it’s all in how you show you care. The residents need to know.”

Chef Andrew’s vision is to ensure that the beautiful Elim Park restaurants are places people are excited to eat at. He plans to create diverse menus and try things that haven’t been tried before.

Jenna Dean Fitness Center

Denny Sant came to Elim Park after working for the Putnam County New York Finance Department and pastoring churches in several states. When a friend referred him to Elim Park, he checked it out to satisfy his curiosity. The more he talked to existing staff, the more he wanted to become part of the community.

“I provide oversight for the resident chaplains,” he explains.

to figure it out on my own. Everyone was accepting and it’s easy to ask questions here.”

Denny loves to connect with people as people. When asked about the denominational roots of the community, he points out that Elim Park has always been led by a group of people with a heart to serve others—regardless of their religious or denominational background.

His goal is to create more opportunities for Elim Park to care for the people within its doors and connect with the surrounding community.

Musical Revival at Nelson Hall

It made me smile when I saw people standing up dancing and enjoying the music.

Nelson Hall loves maintaining a tried and true foundation while also experimenting with new ideas. The mantra? Don’t be boring! In 2017, tribute shows reigned supreme. Nelson Hall presented tributes to bands like Chicago, The Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Jackson Browne.

The tribute series catered to baby boomers who grew up during the ʼ60s and ʼ70s. Featuring rock music made popular during those decades, the tribute series successfully reached its intended audience, bringing in new people from the surrounding community.

It also found a place in the hearts of an unexpected demographic—the parents of the ʼ60s and ʼ70s. Nelson Hall witnessed a rebirth of music with people who missed trends while they were busy raising families.

“We’re all about breaking stereotypes,” says Rachele Patrignelli, theatre manager. “We reached out to a new audience, our existing audience trusted us and came anyway, and they ended up loving it.”

One patron left a review saying, “It made me smile when I saw many people in the crowd standing up dancing and enjoying the music.”

Thank you for dancing and enjoying music with Nelson Hall. We hope to see you in the theatre again as we explore more performance styles in 2018.

Musical Milestones As Nelson Hall celebrates its 10th anniversary with the 2017-2018 season, here are a few markers that have made the journey so memorable: u One of the very first performers at Nelson Hall, singer/ composer Tony DeSare, is now touring with major symphonies around the United States and Canada. u The re-creation of Ralph Malph: Donny Most from Happy Days, who performed in May of 2017, has recently returned to his first love—singing big band/swing music. u More people are discovering Nelson Hall and love the intimate setting. Two shows in 2017 had to book additional performances due to demand. u Patrons who attended some of the first productions as visitors to Elim Park are now enjoying Nelson Hall as Elim Park residents.

A Golden Honeymoon Jim and Betty Hackett are quietly passionate people with a classic American story—childhood friends and high school sweethearts who married, raised three children, and forged their way to success through hard work. Their story had a unique twist, though. Their middle child was born with Autism.

In spring of 2017, the Hacketts began a new chapter.

They moved into Elim Park. “Elim Park just took the pressure off,” they explain. They no longer worry about household maintenance that had become burdensome and unsafe, they’ve eliminated arguments about whether or not to hire people to help with tasks, and their children know they are safe.

In their journey to build the best life possible for their son, the Hacketts became pioneers in advocating and creating options for the autistic community in Connecticut. Their efforts lead to the creation of Opportunity House, a non-profit that oversees three group homes and two day programs for autistic adults. They dedicated their adult lives to their work, their family, and the community they served.

“Living here has allowed us to step away from routine responsibilities and really focus on relationships,” Betty says. “We feel totally free to be ourselves. Sometimes I ask Jim, ‘How did we get so lucky?’ And then he reminds me of all we went through to get here. We earned it!”

Elim Park is the Hackett’s well-deserved place of rejuvenation. They can finally leave the chores to someone else and focus on what they enjoy—whether that’s shooting pool, setting aside plenty of time to read, or having an accessible home that enables their son to visit on the weekends. Jim laughs when he says, “We say we’re working on a list of complaints, but there’s nothing on the list!”

Customized Fitness Four months after moving to Elim Park, Frank and Pat Palana have established themselves as regulars at the fitness center. Frank walks five miles daily outside of the fitness center and also utilized the treadmills and pool. Three times a week, the couple participate in aerobics class together.

“We’re under eighty,” Frank says. “Our generation is a little more aware of fitness.” He explains that his mother walked many miles each day, but it was because she enjoyed walking, not because she was intentionally thinking about staying fit.

“We haven’t tried all the machines yet,” Pat explains, “because we just don’t have time. There’s always so much to do. You have to choose.” She and Frank add that the classes they participate in are perfect for ensuring they make time for their physical well-being each week.

Frank and Pat say they’ve been impressed with the personal attention and emphasis on safety at the fitness center.

“The wellness director walked us through all the equipment since it’s all state-of-the-art,

Chris, the President of Nelson Construction, Inc. and past President of The Home Builders Association of Hartford County, is from Farmington, CT. He joined the Board in 2009, and was elected Vice-Chair in 2012-2014 and Chair in 2014.

Rob Ecker, MBA is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer - Group Insurance at the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in New York, NY. He resides in Weatogue, CT with his family.

Brent Allen Dr. Brent Allen, District Executive Minister for Converge Northeast. Brent and his wife Lori have three grown children and two grandchildren. They reside in Southington, CT.

Jeannine deLivron is the Director of Managed Care Northeast for Apria Healthcare Managed Care.

She is a CT licensed professional Respiratory Care Practitioner, and is a resident of Avon, CT.

Geoff Swanson Geoff is a Certified Financial Planner and a partner in one of the top Morgan Stanley Portfolio Management teams in Connecticut. He lives in West Simsbury with his wife Laurie and 5 children.

Heart and Mission One hundred and ten years ago, the First Swedish Baptist Church of Brooklyn, NY agreed to buy a twelve room house and several barns on an 80 acre farm. They intended it to serve as a summer home for people of all ages. In 1911, the farm became a year round residence for fifteen people ages fifty to eighty-three. Elim Park was born under the name of The Lodge. Founded by three churches and initially run by a young missionary who gave her salary back to the home, Elim Park began with the goal of serving people from a ministry perspective.

Current board member Kevin Butterfield testifies to the importance of the original mission of Elim Park and confidently says the organization remains true to its roots. Butterfield is the third generation of Butterfields to serve Elim Park. His grandfather helped move the home when it transitioned from Shelton to Cheshire. “The services we offer change, the people come and go, but as long as the heart and goals remain the same, the community will stay true to what it was founded for,” he says.

Another board member, Terry Brennan, says Elim Park is a great way of “honoring mothers and fathers by offering not only comfort but luxury.”

As one of the individuals responsible for selecting the new president, Brennan says, “We looked for someone with both a heart and faith that aligns with our mission and someone with the leadership and executive skills to carry Elim Park into the future.”

Looking back over the history of the community and looking forward to the future, it’s easy to see God’s hand of blessing and the rich heritage that comes from a dedication to the right mission and goals.

Elim Park is a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community whose mission is to provide quality care through comprehensive wellness programs and medical facilities for our residents in a Christ-centered environment.

Elim Park looks upon its mission as an extension of the Church ministry within the Baptist General Conference (Converge Worldwide) and gives admission priority to its members.

Throughout its existence, Elim Park has been a place of both stability and growth. We’ve seen a lot of change throughout 2017—the most prominent being the retirement of long-time president, Ron Dischinger, and the induction of new president, Brian Bedard. It has been my privilege to oversee and maintain Elim Park’s financial stability to enable this successful season of change.

Residents are encouraged to grow spiritually as they live out their lives at a level of wellness and independence appropriate to their individual situation.
