Welcome to Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative Whakawatea, which may refer to the closing song, is an apt title for the Industry Cooperative course in the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport programme. Completed by all students in the final year of the degree, this course gives students an opportunity to negotiate a 150-hour practicum experience aligned with the student’s academic and professional interests within the sport, recreation and health industry. Each student initiates, negotiates, develops, refines, implements, and ultimately reports upon a comprehensive project of benefit to their host organisation. Therefore the ‘co-op’ becomes a three-way venture between the student, a sport, recreation or health organisation and an academic supervisor.

Each year the students become involved with numerous organisations, and the contribution to the community is a credit to the students, the hosting organisations and EIT. This booklet is designed to present summaries of the Whakawatea, Industry Cooperative projects for 2014. We hope you find it informative, interesting and motivating, whether reading it as a potential student, an interested industry partner, stakeholder, or a current student looking for inspiration for your own industry cooperative project.

Anahera McClutchie High School: Hastings Girls’ High School Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

My placement with Sport Hawke’s Bay was to gain experience working with a variety of people and agencies in a community sporting initiative which all parties support.

Camberley is a small ‘low socio-economic’ community in Hastings made up of a variety of different cultures, mainly Maori and Pacific Islanders.

The project was originally devised because Camberley is a community that currently lacks physical activity. I’ve lived in Camberley my whole life and this project enabled me to give back to my community as there are a lot of sport talented residents who pursue opportunity. This project specifically targets the adult population, however the kids of Camberley motivate the adults to become active together as a unit.

Therefore, the initiative involves kids with various team events and competitions involving all ages to enhance adult participation.

As part of my placement we achieved an enhancement of community participation through various activities. Due to this, the community suggested to develop a Camberley Sports Club to sustain Camberley participation in sport and have the ability to portray the identity of Camberley to the wider community. This sports club will provide opportunities for the residents to associate together for a recreational purpose and learn the importance of health and physical activity with the support of each other.

As of Wednesday 20th August 2014, Camberley has received the Certificate of Incorporation and are officially a legal identified Sports Club which is community directed with the support of Sport Hawke’s Bay.

Brad Buckingham High School: Havelock North High School Placement organisation: Dual Functions Rehabilitation

A high interest with sports and assisting people to overcome injury led me to arrange a placement with Dual Functions rehabilitation services. The purpose of this project sets out to identify ways of increasing physical motor skills to support patients while overcoming the effects from traumatic brain injury.

During this placement my focus has been to structure an individual hydro rehabilitative strength and mobility program based on academic research and overseen by highly qualified occupational and physiotherapists. I have also attempted to increase the client’s focus by encouraging his participation in BRS Movements Education course facilitated through EIT, and identifying ways of understanding thought processes with the goal of improved communication.

This opportunity has given me a good understanding of how an organisation works to strategically support individuals with traumatic brain injury, overcome lifelong complications through structured exercise programs and appropriate tests to monitor progress performance.

Cara O’Neill High School: Taradale High School Placement organisation: Central Football

My placement with central football was mostly based around increasing participation rates of females in football. An example of the influence I had was during Women’s and Girls’ Week. This was possibly the biggest eye opener as to how we can influence young girls with one training session. The fact that you are a role model was really enjoyable knowing you are being looked up to by younger girls.

Hopefully with the encouragement we have provided in our many coaching programmes we have started a small part of a bigger picture in women’s football. This placement has made me come out of my shell and take responsibility of who I am as a coach, and made me realise that everything we do reflects onto those young girls. This can be nerve racking at times, but the enjoyment players have and the feedback from parents and teachers is worth it.

Hopefully our coaching programmes at schools and women’s week, as well as representative training, will encourage Hawkes Bay’s female football players to achieve a higher level of football participation for the whole of NZ..

Chloe Boyd High School: Opononi Area School Placement organisation: Hohepa

On the outskirts of Napier, nestled on a Poraiti hill side and reaching down into a flourishing gully, is a village, a community, a school, a sanctuary and a home. Hohepa is a beautiful biodynamic farm, complete with many houses and a school, offering permanent residential care to children living with intellectual disabilities in a nurturing holistic manner; what their mission statement does not mention however, is what incredible education and experiences those who come to work at Hohepa will inevitable encounter. This year I have been fortunate enough to become one of the pupils of the children of Hohepa.

The aim of my project was to research and help to create simple illustrations fashioned into small books that allow a child to explore an activity they have not yet tried or feel anxious about.

With the focus on recreation, the children create the experience in a simple story, become familiar with the concept and tasks of the activity, and eventually, in their time, physically participate in the activity.

The biggest success is the education and enchantment of someone who knew nothing about intellectual disabilities before, who had no idea how much could be learnt and gained for children who often can’t articulate words, but have the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen.

David James O’Connell High School: Wairoa College Placement organisation: William Colenso College

My interest in school-based recreation and sport becoming a career option led me to developing an industry cooperative project within William Colenso College which involved developing and coordinating a Physical Education programme titled “Learn and Play” (L&P) aimed to progressively increase regular participation levels of years 7-8 William Colenso College students in structured physical activity. This engaging Physical Education programme involves teaching students the fundamentals to alternative sports (including Ki-O-Rahi, Handball, and Lacrosse), then organising lunchtime events to provide opportunities for the students’ to apply their learning into practice.

By the end of this project, I aim to have provided a programme which can be implemented within the organisation and within various Primary and Secondary schools, as Learn and Play seeks to promote physical activity towards active and inactive student populations, promotes physical activity outside class time, and develops a positive culture and positive communication within the target audience.

Jessica Walker High School: Athena Montessori Placement organisation: Bootifix

I have become passionate about health and fitness especially in postpartum. As a mother of four I have developed an enthusiasm for core and pelvic floor strength. I first discovered my own weak core through running. I learnt how much injury I had done and could potentially do through running with a weak core. I feel there could be more awareness in Hawke’s Bay around the importance of having a strong core and pelvic floor.

I have been fortunate to work with Bootifix directed by Dani Paki, an organisation who specialise in maternity and post pregnancy health and fitness. Bootifix allows a supportive network around mothers in the community by allowing them to train effectively and safely.

Dani also places huge emphasis on the emotional wellbeing of her clients. She believes the mind and body work hand in hand and she is very supportive of each woman’s beliefs, boundaries, life experiences and goals.

Denise Aiolupotea High School: Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, Brisbane Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay - Green Prescription: Maternal

The Great Pasifica Cook Off and Active Pasifica aims is to provide nutrition and exercise education classes for Pasifica Mothers in the Flaxmere community.

Programme Benefits: • Active mums • Friendships • Healthier cooking ideas • Fun and healthy social environment • Family friendly Experiences during my placement have helped me understand the importance of relationships.

Working with Sport Hawke’s Bay has helped me broaden my knowledge about health and has introduced me to a network of people along the way.

I chose the maternal programme because I am a Pasifica mother myself and wanted to give back to my community. Making the programme specific to Pasifica mothers has helped me understand more about my own culture.

Hamish Tahana High School: St John’s College Placement organisation: Henry Hill School Swimming Academy

Most New Zealander’s enjoy summer days at the beach, down by the river, or in the pool; therefore water safely education and the ability to swim is essential. This year my main industry cooperative project focused on teaching young children how to swim.

For children, learning to swim is not only for their personal safety. It also builds confidence, strengthens their body muscles, provides social interaction and other activities that can be enjoyed once they can swim.

Each week I coached a small group of children from Henry Hill School at the Onekawa Pools. As the weeks progressed the children gained more and more confidence in the water and their ability to swim increased.

Not only are the children learning to swim, but I am further developing my teaching skills and techniques. I have formed collaborate relationships with the children, the pool staff and with Grant my placement mentor.

Jason Long High School: Hastings Boys’ High School Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union (HBRU)

My huge passion for rugby led me to approaching the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union to carry out my placement. Having been involved with rugby since the age of 5, and being directly involved with the HBRU through HB representative rugby, I saw this as a great opportunity to work alongside the union and with aspiring rugby players.

My placement has allowed me to teach rugby skills to school aged kids and to representative players, and has also given me an opportunity to help with the running of ‘rippa rugby’ tournaments and school holiday programmes.

My project is to work with HB under 18, 16 and 14 rep rugby front row players, and take them through physical sessions focusing on the fundamentals of scrummaging.

By doing this I am hoping to improve the knowledge of these players around scrummaging in order to help improve the safety and quality of Hawke’s Bay front rowers.

Matt Murtha High School: Napier Boys’ High School Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

Fundamental movement skills (FMS) are the building blocks that lead to specialised movement for adequate participation and enjoyment in many sport and recreational activities. These skills are generally developed in the early stages of childhood, and are considered very important in the physical development of children.

Our industry cooperative project was with Sport Hawke’s Bay and looked at the fundamental movement skills of year 3 and 4 students in two different primary schools across Hawke’s Bay, Frimley and Irongate Primary. A 5 week FMS programme was developed and implemented, comparing results from pre and post programme-testing of the four fundamental movement skills - running, jumping, throwing and catching.

The hope for this project is to see improvements in these childrens’ fundamental movement skills and physical confidence.

If this project is successful, it can be implemented into many primary schools not only in Hawke’s Bay, but all around New Zealand.

Jayden Austin High School: Taradale High School Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

Jessie Carter High School: Taradale High School Placement organisation: Bootifix

At the beginning of this Industry Cooperative course I was given the opportunity to work with expecting and post pregnancy mums, alongside Danielle Paki (Dani). Over the course of this year so far Dani has progressed from working within Pettigrew Green Arena as a group instructor for Active Mums, to opening her own business ‘Bootifix’. Dani has a passion to work with women, especially during and post pregnancy which fuelled her to branch out on her own and expand her business clientele further.

Whilst working with Dani, I found that although training is becoming more popular, a lot of the stigma around training whilst pregnant still remains. This topic is where my project has been shaped and formed from. My project involves educating women that keeping fit whilst pregnant can be safe, with many benefits for both mum and baby. I also want to promote Dani and her business as one place to begin training.

Kirsty McCallum High School: Napier Girls’ High School Placement organisation: BikeNZ

My placement with Bike NZ was to develop a women’s cycling club for women who didn’t want to race, but wanted to learn and have fun while riding bikes. The project was originally devised because there was a lack of women cycling clubs in Hawke’s Bay, but already a group of women who needed the help to get started. By developing a women’s cycling club, we did just that!

As part of my placement as a club we attracted a wide range of women from all walks of life who had one thing in common – Cycling! Throughout the year we have been providing weekly training rides, both on the road and pathways around Hawke’s Bay. During my placement with Bike NZ I have learnt that there are so many barriers, for women especially, to participate in cycling for themselves.

By eliminating or reducing these barriers we created a club for women to thoroughly enjoy themselves on a bike in and around Hawke’s Bay, where previously they didn’t believe they could. Providing a safe environment where they felt comfortable and confident enabled them to achieve their goals. Something that has been so easy for me to get into can now be easy for others.

Luke Kenworthy High School: Holmfirth High School & Lady Lumleys School – Both in England Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association

My placement was with Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association (HBCA) and the idea was for me to format the competition formats across all grades for the upcoming summer. My project involved conducting a season review through the players and finding out what they enjoyed and disliked about previous seasons. I could then base my project around this while also incorporating HBCA’s goals.

Cricket is a passion of mine and I feel this is an important project as it addresses the need to keep people playing cricket in Hawke’s Bay. As the season has not started yet I do not know how effective my project has been.

After working at my placement it has given me a taste of working in the sporting industry and has confirmed that it is something I would like to pursue in the future.

Martin-John O’Kennedy High School: Napier Boys’ High School Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

The placement industry that I have worked with through the year was Sport Hawke’s Bay, specifically Olivia Mador-Puna, who is the coordinator for the Active Families programme which is run through Hawke’s Bay. With the Active Families programme running so well with Olivia, Sport Hawke’s Bay wanted to produce a programme targeted towards teenagers who are between the ages of 12-18, and this is where I was brought in. I was asked to produce a programme that made sure that the teenagers were participating in some form of active movement such as sports or games, and also to provide information about nutrition that will benefit the teenagers.

A 4 week course was created to put the teenagers through different sporting activities, mostly based around my own personal sport of kickboxing, and also to teach the participants basic nutritional information.

Melanie Kemp High School: Napier Girls’ High School Placement organisation: Marewa Primary School

The Industry Cooperative paper presents an exciting opportunity for third year students to be able to apply the knowledge we have gained over the previous two years of study. With an interest in community health, I chose a placement at Marewa Primary School. This school has a predominately Maori population and the ultimate goal of this placement was to increase participation in physical activity by creating structure.

With the help of the Sport Hawke’s Bay Primary Schools Coordinator I developed Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) who would lead structured lunchtime activities for the junior school. I also developed a physical education plan for the junior school.

The plan gave teachers an easy to use tool to improve the fundamental movement skills of the children and increase engagement into physical activity.

I felt happy to be a part of increasing children’s excitement and interest into being active.

Michael MOrse High School: Karamu High School Placement organisation: Bright Futures Hastings

My placement was with Bright Futures Hastings, which is an early childhood day-care centre. My project was focussed around 5+ a day and introducing healthier eating habits to children and their families. This was achieved through developing resources for parents and teachers, as well as hands on activities with the organisation.

There is an obesity epidemic worldwide, and I believe that the eating habits of most people are formed during their childhood. By getting involved at this age, I believe that healthy eating habits can be put in place that will have more of a chance staying with them for life.

As well as 5+ a day and nutrition, some other aspects were involved in the project in the form of fun activities for the children and planting some fruit and vegetables at Bright Futures, which linked back to the 5+ a day initiative of the project. The placement was very rewarding and is something I loved every minute of.

Reece Brew High School: Lytton High School Placement organisation: Central Football

My placement was with Central Football. I was lucky enough to have worked with this organisation before, so I was familiar with how they operated. My project was originally devised to aim at elite age group football players as there is little to facilitate these players. This changed to teaching young children to play and getting more children involved in playing football.

The majority of the placement involved setting up and organising Saturday morning football for sixth, seventh and eighth grade children in clubs. I was also involved in coaching a number of schools across the Hawke’s Bay region.

I really enjoyed coaching the young kids and by the end of the regular football season I really got on board with Central Football’s ideals and what they are trying to achieve with their youth development. If it continues to have the support and success, I do believe that a large portion of elite athletes will be developed from Central Football.

Sam Grapes High School: John Bentley Secondary School, Caine, England Placement organisation: WorkFit / Sport Hawke’s Bay

My placement was with the WorkFit team of Sport Hawke’s Bay. The project they assigned me to work on was a health and wellbeing programme for the McDonald’s restaurants in Hastings, Taradale and Havelock North. I created my programme by analysing current health and wellbeing programmes, researching academic literature and consultation and planning with Dahl Gurdit-Singh (Health Team Leader of Sport HB).

The research suggested that workplace illness and injury is one of the most costly areas for any modern company. This is often due to poor nutrition, a lack of exercise and poor care of their health. Therefore the programme I created focused on improving those health factors through healthier habit implementation and education on how to lead a healthier life. I have successfully created a legacy by creating for the organisation a health and wellbeing programme that they can implement for any business who uses WorkFit in the future.

Tonia Tikkun High School: Havelock North High School Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Chiropractic

My placement was with Hawke’s Bay Chiropractic and the Jarrod Cunningham Sports Academy students at Havelock North High School. It included a ‘Posture and Performance’ study to contribute to the local work of Sports Chiropractic and Fitness Trainers for athletes.

As part of the ongoing work of Hawke’s Bay Chiropractic my interest in this project was to identify an effective solution for athletes to correct asymmetries in the hips and shoulders.

The project included postural assessment measures prior to and post intervention. The intervention included a 6-week chiropractic treatment plan including corrective exercises for students to work on at home. These exercises aimed to teach accurate body awareness for the pelvis on all three planes of motion.

Participating in this action-based research I experienced the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for postural improvement. I also enjoyed providing assistance to students in learning skills to advance their athletic goals.

The knowledge I have acquired may provide coaches and trainers confidence in forming multi-disciplinary teams for elite sporting performance.

Vanessa Oliver High School: Sacred Heart College Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay

The Maternal Green Prescription program is a new initiative devised by Sport Hawke’s Bay. The programme aims to improve the health of women during pregnancy and the postnatal period by promoting healthy eating and exercise.

Recently having children of my own I noticed a common trend of women living sedentary lifestyles due to fear of complications in their pregnancy. There is a need for change.

This project has allowed me to work with a target population of young mothers. These are women who have added challenges to their mothering, barriers that are harder to overcome. I have created a motivational tool in the form of an online resource. Social media allows this group to access information when they wish, communicate without intimidation and share in a forum of mothers who are in the same situation in an environment in which they feel comfortable.

Community health has the potential to positively change people’s lives, in this case the lives of young families who are our future. For me, to be able to apply my knowledge and make a change to someone’s life is what having my degree is all about.
