Foreword

The Business Research Community of Practice series promotes the exchange of ideas among applied business researchers across the Te Pūkenga network. The series has the potential to helpidentifynewcollaborationsanddirectionsforresearchdevelopment. In2023,theBusiness Research Community of Practice celebrated its second year of successful operation. The online series, comprising two networking/research pitch sessions, two professional development sessions, and eight engaging research presentations, exemplified our collective dedication to scholarly advancement. These sessions garnered significant interest, drawing over 100 attendees.

One of the first sessions of the year, ‘Research Pitch’, served as a vibrant platform for members to showcase their research ideas and works in progress. Following this, the focus shifted to professional development. In 2023 the theme was publishing. One of the sessions explored questions associated with publishing and editing books as well as publishing chapters in edited volumes. Participants delved into the intricacies of navigating the publication process in the realm of academic books. Another highlight of the series was the session dedicated to ‘Publishing in Quality Journals’. Led by a seasoned expert in the field, this session offered practical strategies and techniques for targeting high-impact journals, navigating the peer review process, and enhancing the rigour and relevance of research outputs.

Complementing these enriching research development sessions were eight thought-provoking research presentations by members of the applied business research community. Spanning a diverse array of topics such as sustainability, social enterprises, entrepreneurial orientation, lean operations, employee engagement, spirituality, artificial intelligence, and employee retention, these presentations showcased the depth and breadth of scholarly inquiry within our community. From empirical studies to theoretical explorations, each presentation contributed to our collective understanding of contemporary issues and challenges in the field of business research.

We have collated the presentation abstracts and presenter bios in this document for those presenters who wished to be included in the proceedings.

In 2024, this series will continue to provide an opportunity for applied business researchers to collaborate and network. We plan to cover important current and emerging themes, such as the impact of artificial intelligence on research and research project development.

Dr Reddy supervises and examines Masters and Doctoral students’ theses. Dr Reddy has a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Waikato and has over 100 publications: one book, three book chapters, and 70 peer-reviewedjournal articlesin ABDC ranked journals.

Abstract:

This study examines the characteristics of ideal social entrepreneurship. The use of the contemporary design and triangulation approach allows for validating information gathered from different sources. Data were collected from in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, and documentary analysis, and MAXQDA (a qualitative analysis software package) was used for data management, coding, and retrieval. The performance assessment logit model was used to assess the social performance of social enterprises. The findings show that selected social ventures have created a remarkable social value that explicitly resulted in economic empowerment, community improvement, career growth, and political empowerment of its intended beneficiaries. We also found a significant variation in the linkage between social performance indicators, such as inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and impact, across the five cases.

However, there has been limited study concerning the EO family and small business relationship and environmental impact from the New Zealand perspective. Therefore, focusing on family business, this research examined the EO and New Zealand family business growth performance and the environmental effects on the relationship. This research adopted a quantitative method, collecting data from 117 participants. Partial least squares structure and structural equation model analysis were used to test the seven hypotheses on the relationships of EO and family business growth performance, and the influence of dynamic and hostile environments on the relationship. It was found EO dimension variables were a strong predictor of family business growth performance, EO family business positively related, and that environmental factors strongly mediate the relationship between EO and family business growth.

Jaikaran Narula is a lecturer in management at the School of Business and Computing at EIT | Te Pukenga, Tairāwhiti Campus. His research areas include skill development, sustainability and assessment design. He is presenting the findings of his master’s study which is titled ‘An exploratory study of factors influencing the attractionand retention of skilledemployees in the digital sector in Hawke’s Bay’.

Abstract:

This study examines why skilled digital sector labour moves to, returns to live in or leaves the regional community in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. In the wider context, the study discusses the potential impact of these factors on the local labour pool. A comparative case analysis was undertaken comprising two public and two private regional organisations. A combination of face-to-face interviews with a senior executive (n=4), an online survey of skilleddigitalsectoremployees (n=51), anda surveyofEIT BachelorofComputing Systems (BCS) graduates (n=36) was undertaken. The skilled labour force in the Hawke's Bay digital sector appears to be primarily male, middle-aged, and European, with a significant migrant component. The employees in both the public and private sectors provided similar responses as to why they moved to or returned to Hawke’s Bay. These were social factors (being near family and friends)andamenity factors(quality oflife, climate, andbeing awayfrom amajor metropolitan area). Better salary and/or job opportunities are the main reason employees would leave the region. Skilled digital sector labour moves to Hawke’s Bay for lifestyle and social reasons and leaves for greater career opportunities and economic reasons.
