Message From Beth Duffy

EMCM staff, physicians and administrators recently showed their giving spirit by donating more than 1,500 new and gently used children’s books, which were distributed to community agencies and Einstein physician practices to encourage families to read to their children. A special book plate was placed inside the books which commemorated the opening of the Nicholas and Athene Karabots Medical Building.

Each November we celebrate Veteran’s Day to honor our Veteran’s for their patriotism, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. I am so proud EMCM honors this special group of individuals several ways. Magnets are placed outside the veterans’ inpatient room doors to thank them for their service. A special flag-adorned surgical cap is placed on veterans undergoing a procedure in the Interventional Platform.

Tom Gaylets, Assistant Vice President, Interventional Platform, a veteran himself, started this initiative that is dear to my heart. My dad was a Marine during World War II, having served on Iwo Jima. In addition, many of our employees and volunteers are veterans. Pain Management Continues to Be a Focus of Improvement Team

The Pain Management Performance Improvement Team, led by Monica Nash, is in its second year of improving how pain is managed in our inpatient population. Over the course of the last fiscal year, the team focused on educating and engaging patients to help them identify an acceptable pain level or goal.

Additional efforts included improving the timeliness of pain reassessments following the administration of pain medication.

Einstein Society Grant Enables Antibiotic Stewardship Education

Recently the Pain Management Team sent surveys to RNs and PCAs asking them to identify barriers encountered in helping patients manage pain. The team is pleased with the number of responses received. Many surveys included additional comments the team found helpful to tackle barriers and develop more ways to help patients achieve their acceptable pain goals.

David Ezdon, Pharm.D., a clinical pharmacist and committee team leader, coordinated and delivered Antibiotic Stewardship education to the hospital staff.

The program, which has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, will be rolled out at other skilled nursing facilities and primary care physician practices next spring. Dr. Ezdon has also presented continuing education credits at the regional Placebo meeting, a monthly gathering of pharmacists and nurses from area hospitals.

The Pain Management team will monitor the pain management dimension of the HCAHPS survey to determine its success. The HCAHPS survey measures patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience. The pain management dimension seeks to determine if patients’ pain was well controlled and if everything possible was done to help their pain during their hospital stay. Fiscal year-to-date results are displayed above.

A generous grant from the Albert Einstein Society enabled EMCM Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee members to join residents and staff of Meadowood Senior Living Community for an educational fireside chat about the perils of inappropriate antimicrobial use and evidence-based guidelines for providers.

Recognition

DAISY Award: Linda Beaudoin, RN Linda does a fantastic job and is a professional, qualified, successful case manager in homecare. This past year she accompanied the Joint Commission surveyor on patient visits in their home. The surveyor was so impressed with Linda's skills and ability to assess pain that she recommended that we video Linda doing her assessments to use as a teaching tool. Linda is well respected by her peers and we are honored to work with such a committed professional.

Employee Recognition: AnnaMarie Castaneda AnnaMarie Castaneda, a medical assistant in the Medical Oncology and Hematology infusion site, was nominated for recognition by her supervisor, Marc Schaller, because of her willingness to assist whenever any need arises. “Many efficiencies have been achieved because of AnnaMarie’s willingness to support the team,” Marc says.

Before switching to electronic medical records, Anna organized volumes of paper charts housed in a walkthrough supply closet doubling as a chart room.

“Anna's efforts and attention allows the front desk area to maintain only active patients’ charts,” says Marc.

During a transition in billing, assistance was needed to ensure charges where entered in a timely fashion so bills could be sent. “Anna learned the AeCIS batch charge entry system so there was no disruption in billing,” Marc says.

DAISY: Jasmyne Walker, BSN, RN Jasmyne Walker, is easygoing, a good worker, and a multitasker who helps others. Jasmyne spends a lot of time caring for patients’ needs and often goes beyond the call of duty. Her spirit brings comfort on the unit as she helps both patients and coworkers during difficult times.

Jasmyne always encourages coworkers and patients to have the best day possible. As a charge nurse and a fellow nurse on the floor, she is a doer and a helper. We can always count on her for help and advice or just a smile to brighten everyone's day!

Anna also cross-trained in AeCIS to assist in registration, scheduling, and checking patients in and out, which has increased team efficiency of patients’ appointments.

“It is often difficult to draw blood from chemotherapy patients, and Anna steps in to assist colleagues when it is needed,” says Marc.

“AnnaMarie is the ultimate team player,” Marc concludes.

The Team at Trappe Pediatric Care

Practice Highlight: Trappe Pediatric Care Trappe Pediatric Care has become an integral part of the community since opening in 2001, first located in Old Collegeville. The practice expanded nine years ago when it moved to Trappe. The staff seeks to provide excellent care to patients and their families inside and outside the office by making patients a priority.

They compassionately set children and adolescents at ease by being patient with them and using childfriendly techniques during visits. And the aquariumtheme office provides a kid-friendly atmosphere.

The growing practice has four pediatricians and three nurse practitioners. The staff focuses on providing skilled triage and promoting communication and strong relationships with patients and their families. As a result, Trappe Pediatric Care draws patients from Collegeville, King of Prussia, Royersford, Phoenixville, Drexel Hill, and Chester and Bucks Counties.

The staff also engages in community events supporting their patients. For three years they have run Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The Trappe Pediatric Care staff also helps patients struggling with complex medical problems by participating in fundraisers to help their families.

Harvest Ball Raises More Than $1M On November 7, the Auxiliary of Einstein Healthcare Network hosted more than 600 Einstein friends and family at the 63rd annual Harvest Ball. Guests dined, danced and raised more than $1.1 million to help Einstein meet the growing need for advanced emergency care in the Philadelphia region. Harvest Ball honorees, Michelle and David Shabot and Korn Ferry, were recognized for their long-time commitment to Einstein and healthcare in the Philadelphia region. The Harvest Ball is the Auxiliary’s biggest fundraising event of the year.

News Briefs ■ Einstein Medical Center Montgomery (EMCM) received “Get with the Guidelines” Bronze Quality Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

EMCM met all proven objective outcomes criteria, which was measured by many evidence-based guidelines. This year’s award was the highest achievement EMCM could attain, given its recent designation as a Primary Stroke Center.

■ The 64th graduation ceremony of the Frank J. Tornetta School of Anesthesia at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery/La Salle University School of Nursing and Health Sciences was held November 12th at Normandy Farm Hotel and Conference Center Program.

Graduates completed a 27-month clinical education program within Einstein Health Network and 15 additional clinical sites in the region. More than 285 family members, faculty, students and friends attended the ceremony celebrating these advance practice nurses. The graduates earned their Master of Science in Nursing from La Salle University. They now are eligible to complete the National Board Certification Examination for nurse Anesthetists.

■ Olivia Johnson, EMCM’s Clinical Coordinator for the Pharmacy, is one of the first pharmacists in the country to become Board Certified in Critical Care Pharmacy.

“We are immensely proud of her and this accomplishment,” said supervisor David Mahalic, Pharm.D., R.Ph. Olivia has continually taken on new responsibilities since joining Montgomery Hospital in 2003. She was promoted to her current position in 2007 and began making rounds on inpatients seen by Montgomery Family Practice. As the opening of EMCM neared, Olivia assumed additional clinical roles with a new Intensivist program at Montgomery Hospital. Her responsibilities grew with the Intensivists, and they value her as pivotal team member. While working, Olivia also expanded her knowledge in Critical Care Medicine, leading to her Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine for Pharmacists.

■ Einstein Urology hosted a free men's health seminar at the Crowne Plaza in King of Prussia on November 11th. Dr. Jay Simhan, Director of Urologic Trauma, Reconstruction and Prosthetics, and Dr. Steven Sterious, Urologist, explained symptoms, causes and treatments for erectile dysfunction, male urinary incontinence and prostate health.

■ Women attending a free health seminar at EMCM November 17th learned about symptoms, causes and treatments for pelvic floor disease from Dr. Donald DeBrakeleer, OB/GYN, and MossRehab Physical Therapist Jill Carnahan.

■ EMCM partnered with Weis Markets in East Norriton to present a free diabetes workshop at the supermarket on Nov. 19. Dr. Jae Hwang of Norristown Family Physicians as well as a dietitian and pharmacist from Weis Market led a discussion about diabetes prevention strategies, blood sugar control tips and how to eat healthfully during the holidays.

■ Einstein Medical Center Montgomery held Veteran’s Day events to honor individuals who served our country. EMCM hosted the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) Veterans Day Project at Guardino Park in Norristown. Local businesses, politicians and TMF representatives gathered to express gratitude to veterans and first responders.

A brief ceremony was held and then Guardino Park was cleaned up as a service project. TMF empowers veterans and the families of fallen heroes to achieve their goals.

Field Trip to EMCM ­

EMCM hosted a Healthy NewsWorks field trip to the Emergency Department last week. Approximately 20 students from Whitehall and Marshall Street schools attended.

■ Nurse Manager Kim Vitelli, RN, BSN, led the group on a tour of the different areas of the ED. ■ Robert Czincila, DO, FACEP, Chief of Emergency Medicine, demonstrated how to prepare a splint for a fractured wrist or arm and shared x-rays that showed a fracture.

■ Claire Karis, a nurse and head of CPR training, demonstrated CPR techniques to relieve choking.

■ Tom Gaylets, nurse and Assistant VP, Interventional Platform, demonstrated how an EKG is administered and other monitors and showed a 3-D model of the heart.

■ Ken Bullwinkle, RN, and nurse educator in the ED, demonstrated first aid treatment for burns, scrapes, cuts and bruises.

■ Plymouth Ambulance provided an ambulance tour.

The Healthy NewsWorks program enables elementary and middle school students to learn about and encourage healthful living by producing health

publications and other types of media for their fellow students, families and the school community. Woven throughout the program are opportunities for students to gain writing and interviewing skills; to investigate, critically appraise and use health information; and to converse with medical experts, teachers, and community members.

“I am excited and encouraged by young people interested in what we do, why we do it and their desire to potentially enter the medical field,” says Czincila.
