President, Einstein Physicians Philadelphia I hope this message finds you all well. Over the past several months, we’ve faced many challenges from the unexpected Omicron surge as we moved forward with the Jefferson integration. Because of the impact of Omicron on our staff and physicians, our practices and some of our hospital operations were disrupted. Fortunately, the infection rate and case load are significantly lower so we can begin to recover. This month marks the two-year milestone of the pandemic. It has been a very long, exhausting, and difficult road for everyone, but particularly for those who work in healthcare. Please know that your commitment and hard work have never gone unnoticed. We’re grateful for your resilience, your passion and dedication amidst uncertainty.

We are now officially part of the Jefferson Medical Group (JMG) as the Einstein Division. Other Divisions include the Center City, Northeast, Abington and New Jersey Divisions.

Einstein Physician leadership has been meeting regularly with Jefferson leadership since October to review policies, contracts, compensation, strategies for growth with a commitment for standardization as we become part of One Jefferson.

In exciting news, Jefferson is working with global search partner Egon Zehnder to find our next CEO to replace Dr. Stephen Klasko. The search firm has interacted with our Chairs and other leaders as well as our Trustees.

Spring is all about new beginnings, and my hope is that we continue to show the resilience and strength that we have for the past two years to navigate what lies ahead.

In the Know with the CMO Happy Spring! Since our last issue, we’ve witnessed the rise and fall of the Omicron wave. This unprecedented spike in cases and hospitalizations was deeply challenging in many ways, but we’re thankfully on the other side of it now. Einstein’s resilience and unwavering commitment to patient care amidst these unexpected challenges was truly impressive.

In other news, the Jefferson integration continues to move along smoothly as we continue to see just how closely aligned Einstein and Jefferson already are in our mission, vision and values.

Together as One Jefferson, we eagerly anticipate the search for the next CEO of Jefferson Health, which is spearheaded by the world-renowned global search firm Egon Zehnder.

We’ve learned a lot about the American healthcare system over the past two years. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the persistent and pre-existing disparities and inefficiencies within healthcare today, and we cannot turn back. We must act and do all that we can to deliver even better care to our patients - the right care at the right time and the right place. Together, Jefferson + Einstein will be well positioned to take on this challenge and the work that will be required.

There is no doubt we will get there if we continue to put people first, do the right thing, be bold and think differently.

Budget FY 22 & 23 The Omicron wave had a very negative impact on our budget in December, January, and February. Understandably, we are significantly behind budget in visits and procedures. We are working with our Director of Patient access, Dave Tebbens and his team, to identify opportunities to optimize our schedules in order to provide services to those who have delayed care or could not get into our practices because of staffing shortages. Your help and support of this effort will be greatly appreciated.

The budget process for next fiscal year is underway. It will be our first budget as part of Jefferson. Our customary process of budgeting is very much in line with that of Jefferson, so we anticipate a smooth transition. It is imperative that we get back to pre-pandemic volume levels to better serve our community and to achieve our financial goals.

EPPI and ECHA Physicians and APCs are overall at the 60th% level of productivity. We will be working with Chairs and Administrators to help those not at that level to get there.

The budgeting process will wrap up in the month of May and we will keep you informed along the way.

The COO Corner This launches our first newsletter in 2022, so Happy New Year! In February, we celebrated Black History Month. Also known as African American History Month in the U.S., it is an annual observation in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom and the United States and a celebration of the achievements to be recognized by African Americans in U.S. History. Their past has led to some unique factors that have created significant health disparities in the black community. Compared to their white counterparts, African Americans are at higher risk for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS according to the Office of Minority Health. It is estimated that racial health disparities cost $35 billion in excess health care expenditures, $10 billion in illness related lost productivity, and $200 billon in premature deaths.

It is with pride as an African American male, and part of the senior leadership of Jefferson Medical Group, that our organization maintains focus and commitment to closing gaps for these health disparities within the communities that we serve. Please be opened to listen and observe the significant contributions of African Americans in our history this month and with continued dedication to keeping our communities healthy, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or gender.

Staffing Vacancy Challenges – I would love to state that we’ve overcome this issue, but with COVID surges, and other environmental impact, we continue across all of Jefferson, to experience high levels of vacancies. In addition to MA’s and PSR’s in the past, with COVID impact, we are seeing large numbers of Leaves of Absences at all levels of the organization.

We continue to discuss and apply tactics to mitigate this issue, some with success, and others still in process.

■

Implementation of Clinical Charge Capture (CCC) – By the end of January, we are live with CCC for all of practices. While no implementation is without issues, we have adapted well to this new product in most practice settings both inpatient and outpatient based.

This project will ensure that medical documentation is completed prior to charge entry and will provide enhanced reconciliation for inpatient services. I wish to thank all of our IT colleagues for their dedication in continuing to find solutions to shortcoming of the software, and for the patience and support by our physicians/clinicians throughout this long journey of implementation.

Implementation of Phreesia – We are in the latter stages of practice implementation of Phreesia, a new kiosk and smart device access for patients to complete remote check in, financial transactions, etc. across the organization. As stated above, while we have experienced some minor issues during implementation, we are seeing positive outcomes of reduced demand on staffing at the front desk in our practices. In addition, we provide an alternative option for our patients to check in prior to their visit and upload/provide insurance and other critical information and pay outstanding co-pays and balances remotely that will reduce the amount of time associated with these duties at the site.

We continue to assess impacting issues and to work to find better, more efficient ways of providing support to our practices that streamline process, improved patient experience, reduces demand on our physicians/staff and has the potential to further realize revenue streams for the Network. Einstein All Stars Four members of the Einstein family have been named “Einstein All Stars” in recognition of their work ethic, dedication and willingness to go beyond their defined duties to help patients and colleagues.

The four were selected from employees nominated for the second implementation of the program designed to “boost morale and recognize the people who are truly going above and beyond at their jobs,” said Gina Preston, Administrator of Heart and Vascular Health and a member of the Employee Engagement Committee. At surprise announcements in their departments this week, the four were greeted with towers of blue and silver balloons and news of their selection – which comes with a paid personal day off, a framed certificate and three months of free parking or a stipend for public transportation. They’ll also be recognized in newsletters and on video screens across the network.

Esmond Porter, a cook in the Department of Food and Nutrition at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, was nominated by Karina Radziak, Director of Food and Nutrition, as “an exceptional employee” who “takes pride in his food,” “works extra when we are short-handed” and who “jumps in and helps his fellow cooks when needed, without being asked to.”

Martin Alexion, patient outreach representative, was cited for his “consistency in superb communication, creating an excellent patient experience” by Emilia Pine, Clinical Program Manager for Einstein Care Partners, who nominated him. Alexion helps patients navigate the healthcare system and is “thoughtful in his interactions with all,” Pine said.

■

A colleague at MossRehab nominated nurse Debbie Juritsch for doing “whatever she can do in her power to make the patients comfortable and happy.” Nurse Elizabeth Ali cited an instance when Juritsch made sure a patient who needed one got a “nice, long, hot shower and got all lotioned up and comfortable in their bed” as one example of Juritsch going “above and beyond to make her patients happy.”

Becky Hannigan, a physical therapist at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, is a “team leader who works side-by-side with her team in the trenches,” according to the nomination by colleague Vicki Tobin. Hannigan shows many kindnesses to patients – she’s paid for their TV service, bought them newspapers or magazines at the gift shop – and does whatever she can to “improve a patient’s stay.”

The All-Stars program honors four employees from across the network every quarter. Most employees are eligible to be nominated with the exceptions of vice presidents and physicians. Physicians and Advanced Practice Clinicians have a separate recognition program.

The plan is to invite all the winners to a breakfast or lunch at the end of the year with Dixie James, Chief Operating Officer of Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, and other network leadership.

The All-Stars program was inspired by John Ortiz, a technician in the SIM Center, who suggested it at a Senior Leader Breakfast to Dixie James. It arises out of request for more recognition voiced during an Employee Engagement Survey.

Message from the Physician & APC Wellness Committee On January 28, the Advanced Practice Clinician/Physician Wellness Committee and the SPCA Philadelphia sponsored a “Meet the Pups” event at the Gouley Auditorium on the Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia campus.

Volunteers from the SPCA brought adoptable dogs to pet and play with the for staff to relax and “de-stress.” Studies show that stroking a dog, cat, or other animal can lower blood pressure and create a calming effect.

The SPCA needs some supplies and if you like, you can bring one or more items with you to donate. There’s a wish-list of supplies on their website: www.pspca.org but these are the most-needed items: ■

ECHA News ECHA recently received approval from the ACGME to start a Family Medicine Residency program. This initiative was led by Dr. Nahid Farhat, who will serve as the Residency Program Director. Dr. Farhat will be joined by Dr. Martha Simmons as the Associate Program Director. The first class of six residents will start July 1, 2022, and over the next three years we will have a full complement of 18 residents. We are in the process of building the new practice location for the residency located at 5201 Old York Rd. and expect construction to be completed by May 1.

Physician/Staff Announcements ■

Dr. Carrado Minimo was recently announced as the new chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. In 1993, Dr. Minimo moved to America, settling in Philadelphia to begin residency training in Pathology at Thomas Jefferson University, followed by two fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering and a fellowship at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in New York. Congratulations to Dr. Minimo on his promotion!

Einstein recently welcomed two new physicians to the network: ■

Jonathan Kersun, MD joined Einstein’s Department of Psychiatry/Inpatient Behavioral Health. He comes to Einstein from Belmont Behavioral Hospital and held previous positions at Riddle Memorial Hospital, Mercy Catholic Medical Center and Temple University Hospital. Dr. Kersun is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

■

Olubunmi Shoyele, MD joined Einstein’s Department of Laboratories and Pathology. Dr. Shoyele is an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University College of Medicine. She has held positions at Wayne State University and the Western Connecticut Health Network.

■

Ashley Boudreaux, Operations Manager for Einstein Vascular Surgery, was recently awarded a Paradigm Scholarship for Working Women - a merit-based scholarship for women completing their undergraduate degrees while working full-time at a Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce member company. Ashley has been a valued member of Einstein for more than 13 years.

The SPCA brought puppies to the medical center for employees to play with as a way to relax and de-stress. WHYY-FM Radio ran an interview with Eric Sachinwalla, MD, Medical Director, Infection Prevention & Control for Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, about the increased numbers of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and the importance of getting vaccinated.
