NEXT Victory Commons One 261 VICTORY AVE SUITE 300 DALLAS, TX 75201 Building Context - Victory Commons One 3rd Floor , 11,000 SQ FT 15 - Story Building A new NEXT office space will be opening in Dallas, Texas. This will act as a networking hub for both in-person and digital work. In this project, we were asked to bring a new perspective to designing an office space for NEXT that reflects their brand and takes inspiration from Dallas. The space is meant to inspire and innovate incoming and present employees. As people are comfortable working at home, this office creates the ideal hybrid work environment. There is a balance between workstations and private offices, creating a comfortable environment for all employees. The wellbeing of employees is to be taken into account when designing the space as well.

Design Concept The inspiration behind this design is taken from the “Traveling Man” statue, located in the Deep Ellum in Dallas, which inspires growth. The continuous growth of unity, movement, mindset and energy can all be seen through my design and into the work ethic of the employees. It is seen in lighting, form, and space planning. It is important to create a comfortable, inventive environment, encouraging continuous growth between team members. The statue contains three elements that represent three different stages, awakening, waiting and walking tall. Each stage is represented throughout the office encouraging new developments, mental health awareness, and celebrating thriving as a team. As the Traveling Man is growing throughout this design, it is inspiring the workers to move towards their goal. During the awakening, there are moments to adapt to new environments, learn new ideas and opportunities to make connections. The waiting stage is centered around mental health and catering to the emotional well-being of the occupants. There are opportunities within the design for the employees to seek mind clarification. The last moment of the Traveling Man is Standing Tall, which symbolizes reaching a goal, feeling proud of their work, and maintaining a confident attitude.

Providing a safe and comfortable office space, the office lighting system will slowly change in accordance with natural light. As the day begins, warm lighting is present.

Next it switches to cool lighting to boost productivity. The it switches back to warm at the end of the work day.

Providing a safe and comfortable office space, Next will represent colors from nature that induce relaxation in employees. This creates a natural familiar environment, encouraging occupants to feel at home.

Training Classroom

The training classroom is meant to be a multi-purpose space that is adaptable to the function. Not only will it be used as a training room, but for staff meetings, training meetings, and presentations. Using Steelcase furniture that is movable and adaptable to the environment, the space can be an active learning environment.

Meeting Room

This meeting room shows the dynamic relationship between occupants in a meeting setting. The meeting rooms are used for client presentations, team meetings, and vendor meetings. Using natural light, Steelcase furniture, and including whiteboard/pinup space, this makes the perfect space for a team meeting.

WILLIAM SONOMA

GATHER IN PARADISE The concept for this design is to create an environment where the needs are met for No Kid Hungry volunteers and kids as well as the needs of the employees of William-Sonoma. The two spaces of Williams-Sonoma and No Kid Hungry are meant to live in harmony while keeping an intact boundary between the two. Spatial unity is very important throughout the design when considering how the users will occupy and interact within the space.

This will be done with careful detail to obtain a user-centered design. Inspiration for the design is taken from elements of both companies and united throughout the space. Williams-Sonoma’s logo, a pineapple, is seen throughout the store in different details. The environment in this design is meant to encompass colorful yet elegant materials, and a tropical and natural atmosphere. All of this is done through materials, form, ceiling elements and lighting.

ABOUT THE SITE Terminal Building 947 “O” STREET, LINCOLN, NE 68508 Retail & Office 3,375 SF Located at a busy Lincoln street corner.

The Terminal Building was used to hold offices for the Lincoln Traction Company which was a streetcar company. The building was utilized as office space and as a station for the streetcars. Owning their own electricity plant, they were able to sell steam and electricity.

ABOUT THE COMPANIES No Kid Hungry

Williams - Sonoma

Nonprofit organization that strives to help solve national and world hunger. No Kid Hungry provides meals to kids during the school year and during summer.

As well as providing food to students, this company provides grants to them as well. The reason for these grants is to allow the schools to afford to feed all the students. No Kid Hungry works hard to build awareness by going to state officials and even celebrities to build awareness of childhood hunger.

Founding in 1956 by Chuck Williams 3 Pillars- people, planet, purpose PEOPLE “We’re committed to positive change for our customers and the communities we call home.” PLANET “We strive to use resources responsibly, from mindful manufacturing to energy efficiency.”

Process

Schematic Model Light Studies Something I found interesting was testing how natural lighting made a difference on how the space I designed looks. I liked playing with the different times on revit and being able to see different light outputs. Something that I found difficult with this was that it is now testing me in ways that I can include artificial light inside the store that will also embrace the natural light.

Modeling this out physically and digitally helped me see flaws in my design that I was able to fix. It also helped me see things in perspective and how the elements I added will all come together.

The material strategy for this project is Tropical Chic. To achieve this, colorful materials that accentuated warmth were used.

Neutrals are implemented to keep a modern feel to the space. Greenery in wallpapers, paints, and plants is applied to make a paradise-like environment. Unique textures and patterns are utilized to support the pineapple theme throughout the space as well as to compliment the activities of both kids and adults that will be engaging in the space.

This perspective shows not only the relationship between the people outside walking past the building and the interior, but the interior itself. It shows a very comfortable environment between the users in the space. The restaurant area of the space is meant to bring the community together and support No Kid Hungry. Not only is it a space where students/kids can come and enjoy a meal, it is a space where sponsor events are held to raise money.

NATURE INTERIORITY

Walk on the Wave Storefront for Art and Architecture, 97 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012 This space is meant to provide a unique experience outside of busy New York city, to be fully immersed in a natural built environment. In this project, we were encouraged to step out of our comfort zone and try a unique and different graphic style. I chose to represent my work using a watercolor style render. In this space, there are opportunities for different paths and experiences. For relaxation, there is a seating area with a clear view of a sunset, given time to reflect and even interact with others.

An exploratory option is given to admire the waves and walk along the sandy grass path. Throughout the entire exhibit you can be immersed in the sounds and visuals of how it is to walk along Lake Michigan in Northern Illinois.

Perspective 1 Perspective 1 shows the perspective of someone on the seating on the east side of the building. It shows the relationship between the environment and the users in the space.

There is a small pool of cold water where people are able to dip their feet in for an immersive experience as if they were at the lake.

Plastic is wrapped around the waves to encourage an interaction between the people entering the space and the waves.

A technology based software is used to imitate the sun rising above the waves.

Seating fabric is used to represent the action of sitting on a sandy beach with a towel.

There will be sounds imitating waves, boat horns and seagulls to allow the people walking through the space to fully emerge into the environment.

Grass is grown in the space to create the trail that leads inhibitors to the water or beach.

Sand and epoxy is mixed together to create a sandlike texture to walk on, without the mess.

Perspective 2 Perspective 2 shows the view of someone who is walking on the west side of the building viewing the east. This perspective shows how it feels to be immersed in the waves and the view of “the beach” where people are sitting. From all areas of the space the sunrise is visible and interacted with. Every aspect of the space works together to create an immersive space in Nature.

PRODUCT DESIGN

The Watering Pot In this project we were challenged to come up with an entirely new design for a product. In order to fabricate we are required to use both 3D- printing and laser cutting. The intention behind this design was to create a pot that was targeted towards people that have plants that thrive in water. Lecca are clay pebbles that sit in water and provide nutrients to plants. Knowing this information, I decided to dedicate the pot to the use of lecca.

Lecca requires occasional rinsing and replacement of water. With this plant pot design the user is able to remove the insert from the base, which separates the plant and lecca from the water, allowing the user to rinse what is needed without extreme rearrangement.

METAL PROJECT

Light Garden The intention for this design was to create a hanging chandelier lighting element. I wanted to achieve a natural flower shape to it. To achieve this, the original file was made up of six hexagons that made the shape of a flower. The rest of the material was formed to support the structure of a flower.

Voids are present in the material to allow for light to flow through.

Some things I learned during this process is how a material can completely form and manipulate into a shape that I wanted it to. Another thing I learned was all the different ways to manipulate metal. Learning these new skills will help me be more creative in the future with the materiality of a space.
