LEINEPERI IRONWORKS 1771–2020

IN LEINEPERI village, on the outskirts of the town of Ulvila in Satakunta region, lies the Leineperi or Fredriksfors Ironworks. It was founded at Katokoski rapids in river Kullaanjoki in 1771. Leineperi had a perfect combination of water power, local charcoal production and a reasonable distance to sea shore, considering the ore transportation. In its prime, during the 1860s, Leineperi Ironworks produced and refined iron for various uses and was one of the greatest producers of manufactured iron in Finland. The ironworks’ last blasts were blown in 1891, and all of the iron refining operations ended in Leineperi in 1902. Before the restoration of the ironworks grounds between 1988 and 1994 the area was also used for farming. TODAY Leineperi Ironworks is one of best preserved ironworks in Finland. Its vast building stock is nearly complete, including one of the three remaining blast furnaces in Finland, and it is situated in a uniquely picturesque riverscape within Leineperi village life and luscious nature. FOR THE BUSY modern individual the ironworks offer a sense of calm and fantastic experiences. We recommend a leisurely exploration of the area, listening to the sounds of the mill and the rapids, stopping by the artisan shops, museums and exhibitions, enjoying the baked delicacies at Savipakari, attending the theatre, sleeping over, getting carried away with the guide’s stories, celebrating and participating in the numerous pleasures the ironworks has to offer.

The Blast Furnace Leineperi Blast Furnace or iron refinery is 18 metres tall. It is one of the three remaining blast furnaces in Finland, and the only one with a log foundation. The lower stone-constructed part with the draw bar was built in 1826. On top of it there is a 3,3-metre log frame with special ventilative stone slates within. The space between the log frame and the chimney is filled with sand. The building was raised using a board construction technique in 1861, and in 1882 a further rise was built with a blast furnace gas recovery system. The blast furnace, which had also served as a water tower, was restored between 1988 and 1994. During overhaul many constructions, including the working area covering the stone construction, were restored.
