RULES WHILE DRIVING
HEADLIGHTS
All cars must be driven with headlights on day and night.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs have zero tolerance policy. The same policy applies for cell phone use.
SEATBELTS
Wearing seat belts while driving is required by law. This is mandatory for all passengers.
Infants and toddlers must use a child safety seat, and children under 12 years of age are not allowed in the front seat.

ROAD SIGNS
F-ROADS
SPEED LIMIT
Maximun speed:
90 km/h on paved roads
80 km/h on gravel roads
50 km/h in built-up areas.
These are mountain roads to the highlands, usually narrow gravel roads. They are only accessible for 4x4 vehicles. F-roads are open only during summer and depending on weather conditions. Before driving, check which ones are allowed. Do not enter, when closed. River crossing is prohibited.
GRAVEL ROADS
Many roads outside the city are gravel roads, that is, dirt roads. To avoid splashing gravel or blowing out tires on these roads, slow down and keep your distance from other vehicles.
SINGLE LANE BRIDGE
When crossing bridges in some parts of Iceland, you’ll find that the dual lanes sometimes narrow to accommodate only one car at a time. In these cases, the vehicle closest to the bridge has the right of way.
BLIND HILLS
Roads can have blind spots and need to be driven with extreme precaution.
PRIORITY EXITS IN ICELAND
At roundabouts with two lanes, tra c in the inner lane takes precedence over tra c in the outer lane, which can be a big change for some international travelers.
ANIMALS CROSSING
Always keep an eye on animals crossing. Sheeps, horses and reindeers can be spotted on the road.

WINDBLOWN DOORS
Hold doors with both hands when opening them, as they are easily damaged by wind or strong gusts. This is not covered by any of our insurance.
FUEL
Fill your vehicle with the correct type of fuel. If you’re not sure, check the label on the gas cap. Fill up your tank before dropping o . In case it is not full, you will be charged for it. Refueling fee will apply as well as the fuel itself.
Plan your journey from Vik to Myvatn and Westfjords since there are few gas stations. There are no gas stations in the Highlands.
DIESEL ADBLUE
Our diesel cars come with AdBlue, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid. AdBlue should only be refilled when instructed by the vehicle. If this happens during your rental, purchase AdBlue at any petrol station, keep the receipt and show it when you return the car for a refund. Note that the maximum fill volume is 5 liters. Do not fill more than 5 liters, or the car will go into safe mode.
TIRE PRESSURE AND FLAT TIRES
If you need to adjust tire pressure, do not inflate your tires more than 38 psi (2.6 bar). If you get a flat tire during your rental, you will have a spare wheel or a tire repair kit (foam kit) in your car. This should take you to the nearest tire shop to have your tire replaced or repaired.
UNDERCARRIAGE DAMAGE
This is not included in any insurance. Please make sure to drive slowly on gravel roads.
Summer driving
During summer you will be exposed to midnight sun, which means 24h daytime. This can and will mess your internal clock causing your body not realizing that you are tired and it is time to sleep. Good night sleep is a must, not only part of your beauty routine.
The landscape in Iceland is beautiful and can draw the driver‘s attention away from the road. It is not safe for you or other drivers to slow down too much or stop in the middle of the road. If you want to admire the landscape and take pictures, find a parking spot and stop the car outside of the road. Enjoy the amazing scenery.
Must know
CAMPING
Make sure you camp in designated areas, wild camping is not allowed in Iceland.
PARKING FEES
Entrance and parking fees may apply. Check signs and follow on-site instructions. Some fines are collected electronically by cameras and are sent directly to our company.
Northern Lights
- Find dark spots away from city lights with clear skies. - Make sure to use long exposure on your camera to capture the best image!
- Standing on the roof or hood is strictly prohibited and isn’t covered by insurance.

Winter driving
Drive in a speed you can handle, regular speed limit doesn’t apply during bad weather.
CLOSED ROAD
If road is marked as closed, do not continue driving. This might incure in getting stuck or having accidents. Issues on closed roads are not covered by insurance.
STUDDED TIRES
All of our vehicles are equipped with winter studded tires during winter season.
ICE AND SNOW ROADS
In winter, roads are covered with snow, ice and even “black ice”. Be careful and drive slower than usual.
FINES
All issued fines from your rental period are sent to our company. Administration fee will be charged.
TOLLS
If you are heading to the North Iceland, near Akureyri there is tolled a tunnel Vadlaheidargöng. The trip through a tunnel must be paid through their website www.veggjald.is
