Eudora High School has gone through a lot of changes the past three years. Changes in administration affects everyone, and it can be difficult to feel like you’re starting over each year. Following Dr. Justin Bogart’s announcement he would be the next head principal at Piper High School late in March last year, the Eudora Board of

Education voted to hire Dr. Bill DeWitt as Eudora’s next head principal on April 22, 2024.

Dr. DeWitt previously taught at Eudora High School from 2002 to 2009, so he isn’t a stranger to the area. He has previously worked in Hays, Tonganoxie, and Lawrence. Knowing the community has been helpful for Dr. DeWitt in the transition process.

Dr. DeWitt loves the area. “I always have enjoyed this community and followed it,” Dr. DeWitt said.

Superintendent Dr. Stu Moeckel emphasized that “Dr. Dewitt’s experience with Eudora made him stand out from other candidates.”

He doesn’t want to abruptly take charge and change everything either.

Dr. DeWitt said, “We already know that Eudora is a great high school, if it wasn’t, I wouldn’t have pursued it.”

DeWitt wants to continue to implement early releases, the painting of parking lots, and senior advisory as a start to the school year.

tommiE CassEN

Along with a new principal and many new staff changes, Tommie Cassen, a Sophomore English teacher, is one of the newest members to join The Cardinals at Eudora High School. Cassen has been enthralled with English since she was a child and is thrilled to be living out her dream of teaching it.

“I love English,” Cassen said. “I had always wanted to be a teacher, even when I was a little girl. I would play teacher all the time.”

Cassen’s dream became a reality when she earned her teaching degree, and although this is her first year with the

For EHS Assistant Principal Sean Hayden, he has worked with two other head principals in his early administrative career and is excited to work with Dr. DeWitt.

“DeWitt wants to keep the culture of Eudora strong and student-focused”, Mr. Hayden said.

Every morning Dr. DeWitt is spotted in the commons greeting students as they

enter the building.

“I have an obligation to make sure this building is safe and inviting,” Dr. DeWitt said.

Dr. DeWitt’s highest priority is the students. In his own words, DeWitt said, “Being a teen is hard enough, it’s even harder to do it by yourself.”

Cardinals, she is already very experienced and ready to share her knowledge. She started her teaching career at Washburn Rural High School where she stayed for seven years, then took a short stop at Topeka West High School for one year.

“It [Washburn Rural] was a nice school to work at,” Cassen said. “I really missed my kids, that was the hardest part.”

Cassen is teaching Sophomore English and Reading Intervention. She is also a reading specialist, meaning she is qualified to teach kids who have gaps in their reading skills and need additional assistance. She is excited to work with the kids and teach them valuable skills they will need in the future.

“I like doing writing with the kids. I think writing is really important because you’re going to use it no matter what you’re doing in life,” Cassen said. “You may not be writing an essay in every job that you have, but you’ll be writing memos, emails, resumes, things like that English really structures.”

Even though Cassen is brand new to the district, she is already fitting right in

with the staff. Fellow ELA teacher Corrie Jackson is excited Cassen was hired because of the diversity she brought to the ELA department.

“We all kind of bring to the table a different perspective,” Mr. Jackson said, “and I think that helps us work together even better, the fact that we have a variety of levels of experience… that lets us all learn from each other.”

Cassen says her experience so far has been nothing but positive. “Everybody’s

been really nice, the teachers and principals are all super supportive and are constantly asking me if I need help. So far, I like the kids, they all seem like good kids, so I enjoy teaching class.”

Cassen replaced Cynthia Andrews as the Reading Specialist in the building and works with students to build reading literacy, vocabulary and interventions with students who need assistance with English courses.

arlo Ki NsEy

As several new additions are brought to Eudora High School, Arlo Kinsey is one of them. Kinsey came to Eudora High School as the Assistant Percussionist teacher. After

graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School, Mr. Kinsey was interested in creating an environment that would make students eager to learn more about music.

“Kinsey has done a lot of revamping of things,” Head Band Director Damian Johnson said. “That includes our thought process as far as the drumline goes and having the kids start thinking about their future.”

Kinsey has several goals for himself and his students as they enter Eudora High School. He is extremely passionate about creating his own band that can play alternative music all the time.

“I love building culture and connections with people from different blocks of life,” Kinsey said.

Helping people in need is a target for Kinsey. From a young age, Kinsey had always been interested in education.

lilliaN r iChards

Although becoming an English teacher was not part of her original plan, Ms. Lillian Richards has stepped up to fill a gap in the English department to teach sophomore

Jeremy Schoen is a new addition to the Eudora family. Schoen has taken the responsibility of teaching Auto Collision, Auto Refinishing and Welding classes. Before teaching, he owned a shop in Kansas City, Missouri

“I want my students to leave my program with a deeper understanding of music,” Kinsey said.

As the group involved with the band continues to grow, time to individually instruct becomes a challenge.

“Between the both of us, making sure to use our time wisely to impact all of the kids we are in touch with is our main goal,” Mr. Johnson said.

From early childhood, Kinsey has been involved with music. From starting piano lessons in 3rd grade to experimenting with different instruments. In 5th grade, he explored percussion and decided to keep going with it.

“When with my parents, music was always playing,” Kinsey said. “I give all credit to my parents for encouraging me to become so involved with music from such a young age.”.

Although Kinsey is new to the Eudora High School band program, he has already been a huge benefit in mentoring students.

“He has been able to solve several challenges within the program already,” Mr. Johnson said. “I look forward to the welfare he continues to bring throughout the band community.”

English. Ms. Richards started college studying music production and then music education, but soon realized her passion was for teaching English at the high school level. This is her first year of teaching following her year of substitute teaching.

“This is my first year [of teaching],” Ms. Richards said. “Last year I was a full-time substitute teacher, and I was a long-term sub in a middle school for 7th-grade reading intervention, so that was… rough. It didn’t drive me away from the profession, so I took that as a sign.”

Ms. Richards is driven to keep teaching for various reasons. She enjoys sharing her love of reading with the students and strives to become the teacher she never had.

“There’s the answer of it’s like I’ve always helped teach and I’ve always loved it, but I do really like sharing my love for reading,” Richards said, “and I’ve always liked school. I’ve had my fair share of bad

teachers, so I’d love to replace that and be a good teacher. I love the schedule, and you guys here have been wonderful. Everyday is different and it really has my interest.”

Surprisingly, Ms. Richards did not like reading in high school. Although she loves it now, she didn’t always enjoy it. She hopes to connect with the students and has a goal of trying to “get the kids to like reading.”

While being interviewed and throughout the school tour, Ms. Richards was already feeling comfortable in the school. After being hired, that feeling didn’t go away. She felt a strong sense of community and support and was excited to become a Cardinal.

“I mean I think it is the kind of support that everyone has for each other and the sense of community,” Richards said. “I mean every high school has its issues, but you guys seem to be very supportive here and the staff is awesome. The administration is awesome and all of my kids are

where he bought, built, customized and sold primarily Jeeps, but soon branched out to other kinds.

Despite always having thoughts about teaching, Schoen was driven to teach in Eudora by his professor at Pitt State University.

“I watched him mature through my college career and we kind of grew together, me as a student and him as a teacher,” Schoen said. “I’ve always thought about teaching, I just didn’t know when that chapter would be for me, but my professor was the main reason that placed me here.”

Schoen hopes that his classes will teach students the skills needed for both a job in an auto shop, but also for adulthood. His main goals are to teach his students about respect and auto shop attitude.

“My main goal is to give them the skills, whether it be with their hands or how they act, to help them get a job and to be an adult. Respect and shop attitude are very high on the list of minimum requirements,” Schoen said..

Other than educating students about the skills needed for adulthood and the acceptable auto shop attitude, Schoen enjoys spending time with his family, carrying out mechanical activities, and outdoor activities, like camping.

“Family comes first so that takes up a lot of my free time. But anything mechanical, if its got wheels, I’ll put an engine on it. I love to camp as much as anything that has to do with the outdoors due to the simpleness of it,” Schoen said.

good kids. It’s just been great people to work with.”

Teaching takes up a lot of Ms. Richards’s free time, especially since she is in a master’s program, but she has a newfound passion for playing pickleball with friends, playing violin and piano, reading, and keeping her social relationships up. Despite being busy, Ms. Richards is looking forward to working in Eudora and is excited for the rest of the year.

Boys soCCer

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: Our goal every year is to win league, win regionals, give ourselves a shot to get to the semifinals. Those are always our goals, our expectations, but one of our goals as a team is to give up the least amount of goals we’ve ever given up.

Q: How has the team chemistry been so far?

A: Really good actually, I knew that was something we wouldn’t have to worry about and that’s really shone through these guys have played together, a lot of them from literally nine years old through now, they know each other really well, and they work extremely hard, this is probably one of the hardest working groups we’ve ever had.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: Definitely to make it to state, possibly win, but right now we got to go game to game.

Q: You guys graduated a lot of seniors last year, do you think that will have an impact on the team?

A: I think it is both positive and negative, because we definitely lost a lot of height and strength but we gained a lot more.

Q: How has the team chemistry been so far?

A: So far it’s been really good, I think everyones really connected.

Q: You guys graduated a lot of seniors last year, do you think that will have an impact on this years team?

A: I think it will be a lot of younger guys, so a lot of people will get a bunch of different minutes, between all the different grades and classes.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

A: Like any year I’m looking forward to our older guys being good leaders and I’m looking forward to seeing guys that haven’t played on Friday nights step up and see what they bring to the table. Our guys have worked hard this offseason, they’ve committed in the weight room, and I’m just excited to see that process and how they do on Friday nights competing.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this year?

A: I don’t think our goals change from year to year. We want to be really good, weeks seven, eight, nine, we want to be a team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs. Just give ourselves an opportunity to keep moving on come November.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this year?

A: It’s senior season, coming off of injury, just one last ride with the guys, looking for a successful season.

Q: What are your goals or expectations this year?

A: Every game is 100%, no off days, and do the little things right, if we want to be successful we have to start with the little things.

sporTs

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

A: Experiencing something new, I can’t wait for the season to happen and to get to play with all these older guys that I have known for a good amount of time now and I’m just happy to play with all them and be here for my first season.

Q: How has the team chemistry been so far?

A: It’s been really good, the whole team, all the upperclassmen have been really good to everyone and great leaders, it’s been really good.

Cross CouNtry

Q: What are you looking forward to most this year?

A: I’m looking forward to seeing how everybody improves from the beginning to the end of the year. We have a lot of new runners, a lot of freshman on our team and a lot of athletes that didn’t run cross country last year, so I’m excited to see that growth from the team and every individual on the team

Q: How has the team chemistry been so far?

A: I think the chemistry has been really good, which is positive considering probably 75% of our team are runners that didn’t run in high school last year, they’re either new, transferred in, or freshman. I think the chemistry has been really good from that standpoint. Most of our summer workouts we had two thirds to 75% of our team so we built a lot of chemistry there.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this year?

A: Definitely run faster than last year, and fight to keep a varsity spot. We got a lot of good guys this year, which I’m glad that we have that, but I’m definitely going to need to work to stay on varsity.

Q: You guys have a lot more runners this year compared to last year how do you think the team will benefit from that this year?

A: There’s going to be a lot more effort put fourth, we have that battle now for varsity spots so anyone who is put on JV is going to push the varsity runners, which creates a very good inner team competition and keeps us going strong.

Q: How has the team chemistry been so far?

A: It’s been awesome, even though a lot of the kids on the team are younger, everybody is friends with everybody. I think that helps to push people to get better, it’s the friendly competition. You want them to get better but you also want to beat them, so your improving each other.

Q: You guys have a lot more runners this year, how do you think that will benefit the team?

A: Even though more than half the team are freshman, having more runners will help. There is more of a variety of speeds so everyone has somebody to run with, it’s going to be great.

Q: What are looking forward to most this year?

A: I’m looking forward to meeting new friends, new people and just getting better.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this year?

A: To work really hard, make it to state, and to just get better as a team.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this year?

A: I’m looking forward to seeing all the new faces. We got a lot of new freshman, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform, and how their times drop because of all the hard work they put in this summer and the past few weeks.

Q: Who is an opponent your looking forward to running against this year?

A: Clay Center, they are going to be really good this year. Baldwin of course, they are always looking to beat us and we are always looking to beat them. I’m really excited to play against all those league teams as well.

VolleyBall

Q: What are you looking for forward to most this season?

A: What I’m looking forward to most is really seeing our new leaders emerge, we graduated seven seniors last year, that left some holes in our lineup and it also left some holes in our leadership. Our juniors and seniors this year have always been lead by that group that we lost last year and it gives us an oppourtunity to have some more people step up and lead our team. Even the change that I’ve seen from them from the beginning of the summer until now, has been substantial. Its really exciting to see who is really going to step into that and turn the light on for us this year.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: I think goals are to just have fun in general, but also since we did go pretty far, we went to state last year, I think that we are going to try to get back do better at actual state and just keep pushing hopefully to place this year. Expectations are just to be there for your team, be a good teammate and just do your best.

Q: You have a lot of girls going out for volleyball this year, how do you think that will benefit the team?

A: That will benefit the team because we are getting to see new people in different positions. We have a lot of freshman coming in with a lot of talent, so just having a lot of people come out, we get to see different options for different positions and a bigger team is always nice.

g irls golf

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

A: To see where the returning players can go, because really from the varsity only three of the returners went to state, so it will be a good rebuilding year. I’m looking forward to seeing how they progress as a team.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: We want to make it to state again, I think that’s the biggest goal, to make it to state again as a a team.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

A: I’m looking forward to the tournaments and all the exposure we will have this year because we are in a lot more tournaments than we were last year.

Q: There is a lot of girls going out for golf this season, how do you think that will benefit the team this year?

A: I think it will benefit us a lot. We have a lot of alternates for varsity, so if one girl isn’t shooting her best we will have another girl coming in to fill her spot, which will definitely help the team.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

A: All the tournaments, they’re fun, they’re long but they’re fun.

Q: There is a lot of girls going out for golf this season, how do you think that will benefit the team this year?

A: There will be more experienced people, so when they get older there will be more people who know what they are doing, so then there is a higher chance they will go to state.

ifiEd Bowli Ng

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: Goal wise I think we would like to get back to state, it has been three years now since we had a state qualifying team. I think we have a good chance we have a couple returning peer mentor bowlers from last year, we missed out on qualifying by less than 100 pins, we were real close. I’d say getting back to that point, but as long as the kids have fun and they enjoy the camaraderie of bowling together, that is really all that matters, the state qualifying is just the cherry on top.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?

Q: What are you looking forward to most this year?

A: Just being a team again, I feel like we lost a lot of people last year so it’s just getting back into that and getting to know new people.

Q: What are your goals or expectations for this season?

A: Just getting back to state I feel like that has been the biggest thing so far we really make that our center focus and just working back to get there.

A: Really getting to be with everybody again, its nice going out with everybody in here because you don’t see them throughout the hallways as much, so getting to know them a little bit more is fun.

Q: What are your goals or expectations?

A: I wouldn’t say we have many goals, really just to enjoy it, have fun, and get better.

One of the summer blockbuster movies, Longlegs, was released in late May and advertised everywhere. Starring Nicholas Cage as Longlegs, the movie follows FBI Agent Lee

rEviEws

Harker as a serial killer who is almost caught but narrowly slips away. Harker is put on the case to track down the killer before he kills again. But she will have to look back on her past and figure out clues to help her find out where he has been hiding and who is helping him.

Although the movie was advertised as one of the scariest movies of the year, it wasn’t that scary in my opinion. It was an excellent movie. It started with a bang with an introduction that was completely different from most modern-day films that spoonfeed viewers the information. Many different factors played into the atmosphere. The movie was filmed creatively with many different camera angles and the coloring was on point. The film didn’t have any moments of

Towards the end of the summer, M. Night Shyamalan released a psychological thriller that changed perspectives throughout its runtime. Cooper and his daughter Riley are headed to a concert by one of his daughter’s favorite artists, Lady Raven. Throughout the concert, he is particularly edgy and it turns out that he is a serial killer, but the movie from that point on has

been shot primarily through his perspective.

The movie is shot through the perspective of the killer, we see him dodge out of all sorts of situations regarding the FBI and anybody that is onto him. We eventually find out that the event was a set-up and that they are actually trying to catch the killer. The movie was filmed amazingly and was unlike any of the other movies I have

happiness, so the color palette was more cool-toned. From the house designs to small details, it also did an astonishing job of making all the sets look like the 80s.

The performances delivered by Maika Monroe, who was previously in the horror movie It Follows, and Nicholas Cage, known for playing in all types of movies were beyond amazing, and they made the movie all the more eerie. They made me feel all of the feelings I should be feeling while watching a horror movie. Definitely one of the most defining summer movies of this year. It relies

seen before. It was creepy, funny, and very eerie.

It was dramatically shot and you never know what kinds of shots they would throw in or what the plot would bring next. Completely unpredictable gave the movie a type of vibe that most movies fail with today. You can easily predict the plot of more modern-day movies and just suspect that the killer dies and that all of the main characters get out alive. However, the ending was cool and unpredictable.

It was a fresh movie to see and I am glad I got to see it when it was released in the theatre. It has things for everyone and the people that say they don’t like this film, or that it’s overrated, are lying. It is definitely one of the best movies released this year

more on your own personal opinion; you aren’t viewing it entirely through Harker’s viewpoint and didn’t bother the audience with all of the information; it rather makes you think hard about each frame and how it is shot.

One of my favorite movies of the year, it offers a refreshing new taste for horror movie fans and is unlike most modern-day movies. It has mostly been compared to 80s The Silence of the Lambs and that is totally accurate.

and is one of my favorite M. Night Shyamalan films ever. An interesting watch that kept me engaged the entire time, was definitely one heck of a movie.

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros.

Another summer movie that was very deep into advertising was Twisters, the sequel to the original 1996 film “Twister.” Storm chaser Kate,

Following the events of X, Ti West’s MaXXXine takes place in Hollywood and follows Maxine through her acting career. The atmosphere is different from the previous two films as this

Daisy-Edgar Jones, played by former star of Normal People, Daisy-Edgar Jones, reunites with an old friend in hopes of helping stop a tornado once and for all. However, due to traumatic events from years prior, she is hesitant to come back. On her way, she meets live-streaming storm chaser Tyler who asks for her help.

While the movie has rather low ratings by some, I really thought the movie was enjoyable and had some sweet and cool scenes. The characters were all very intriguing and had elements to them that made the viewers root for them the entire time. It brought in a more country aspect to the film than the original and succeeded in all types of ways. The score was well thought out and many were impressed and believed that it surpassed its original. While I haven’t seen the original in a

while, I can safely say that they are pretty close in ratings, and I believe they are on the same level.

Many reviews stated that they didn’t see much romance between two of the protagonists. I didn’t see it as an issue and many didn’t even notice until they truly thought about it. The plot is very engaging and entertaining the entire time and delivers a great adventure for all who watch it. Some, however, were disappoint-

ed that none of the tornadoes ripped off Glen Powell’s shirt, but those reviews didn’t affect many of the ratings.

Fantastic movie and one of the better sequels I have seen in a while, it brought new material and a great plot to an old and well-known movie. I hope to rewatch this movie soon, as the scenes were intense and did a great job of building suspense.

movie is more of a slasher movie. While the trailers and some fan reviews increased the popularity of the film, it was an overall disappointment.

Even though the previous two films had brought a fresh new look to the horror genre, this film tried to be a campy 80s slasher but ended up being a less entertaining film with a weird and predictable ending. I had very high hopes but was thoroughly disappointed with the end result. The acting performance from Mia Goth, who has played two different roles throughout the trilogy, was amazing. She never fails to deliver a killer performance, literally. Most people go into the movie not remembering that Maxine and Pearl are two separate characters with very different backgrounds. Maxine takes all the elements of a main character in a horror movie.

The plot of the movie was more on the bare side and didn’t really seem to click for a while. They delivered plenty of set pieces, including the Bates Motel from Psycho. They managed to re-imagine some old horror movies and make the 80s look like a really good time. The shots were drawn out, even showing a corpse, flying out of a suitcase, and rolling down a staircase. These shots made it even better. But without having an intriguing amount of characters, besides our main character, and no real plot, the movie fails

in most aspects that consider a movie to be good.

While I did mostly enjoy it, it lacked all of the elements I enjoy in a movie and is far in comparison to its counterparts. It will be noted as the worst movie of the trilogy as it comes to a conclusion, leaving no room for any more sequels as the X trilogy comes to a close.
