Calzaghe knocked ‘em out Review by Rachael Grealish HE may be the idol to many men in the audience that night – but his smooth Welsh voice left the women (or at least this editor) wanting more. The undefeated super middle weight champion, Joe Calzaghe MBE, made his Cumbrian debut at Whitehaven Golf Club, on Thursday September 15. It was highly anticipated evening for the area and the golf club was packed with an excited audience for ‘an evening with Joe Calzaghe MBE’. Hosted by John Lebbon, it was an evening that promised humour alongside an evening with the Welsh former-boxer – and it did not disappoint. The evening kicked off with the cheeky humour of the MC, John Lebbon. He warmed up the audience easily – being able to have quirky jibes at audience members he knew. Gurning has a new face! Report by Rachael Grealish FOR the quirky fair with international fame ugly is beautiful and this year there was a new winner of the mugmangling competition. The Crab Fair World Gurning Championship, which took place on Saturday September 17 in Egremont Market Hall, had a new champion: Adrian Zivelonghi from Coventry. Tommy Mattinson – who’s won the gurning 16 times – was in to win after being beaten by Gordon Blacklock in 2015. But Tommy was placed 2nd and Gordon didn’t place overall in this year’s competition. Adrian drives up from Coventry each year to take part, but had never won – until now. He said: “I just never thought it would happen, I never thought I would get here and win. “And to beat such legends I’m just absolutely made up, it’s brilliant – so chuffed.” Contestants had came from all over the UK: including London and Scotland to take part in the tradition.
