The papers arrived at our collection point on time, but because our regular primary internal distributor was away from the area, the back up team had volunteered to do it, and unfortunately suffered a series of mechanical failures.

We sincerely apologise to our Advertisers, local Distributors, and Readers, and hope that we have learned from our mistakes and that our newly formulated contingency plans to mitigate future disasters of this kind will be effective.

More Like Peter

I remember being fascinated when I first heard about Guy Fawkes and the plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament when I was at school.

I also remember the first time I saw a firework display go wrong and someone got hurt. I was eight and terrified.

At the time I didn’t realise that person got hurt because they weren’t using the fireworks safely and how important it is to do so.

Fireworks are so beautiful to watch - but what isn’t beautiful is seeing the effects of the irresponsible use of the them.

So here is firework code that I swear by:

Peter started Egremont 2Day to give a voice to a voiceless community and supported dozens of charities during his life.

As his successor I’m proud to be part of something that has charity as such a big part of it.

There are many local charities featured in E2D each month and though we celebrate the successes, I am constantly asking myself if there is more I could do.

And, of course there is. There is always more we could do to help charities in the community we live in.

You never know if, or when, they day will come when you may need help from one of these charities.

So why not see if you can do more to support you local charities?

You don’t have to donate thousands or even all of your time, but is there an event you could swap a night out for? Do you have some coppers weighing down your wallet? Or too many shoes or clothes you could donate? - I know I do ladies!

Do a sponsored run, give up chocolate for a month, give a few coppers, give an hour of your time do what you can do, not what you think you’re meant to do.

Charity is in the heart of everyone, you just have to find the best way for you to show it.

As we come to the festive season why not consider doing a reverse advent calendar?

This is when instead of opening a chocolate door everyday, you put one (imperishable) food or clothing item in a box, each day, then on Christmas Eve you could donate your box of items to a local homeless shelter or food bank.

Small items that you’d never miss, but may mean the world someone else.

I know I’m going to try and be a bit more like Peter and look at what I can do to be more charitable.

● You should take precautions to protect your pets during the times of the year when fireworks are likely to be set off (See our vets column for tips on page 6). ● Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable. ● Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time. ● Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary. ● Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back. ● Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks. ● Never return to a firework once it has been lit. ● Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them. ● Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators. ● Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire. ● Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

That might seem a lot of hassle, but you’re better safe than sorry.

Ms Holliday said: “Our Sponsors mean such a lot to our staff and our residents. They give each room an

identity and residents find it comforting that there are people out there who have taken the time to sponsor their room and read their letters.

“I am so excited about Egremont 2Day coming on board, I am sure they will inspire every resident who stays in their room.”

The shelter receives sponsorship from both private individuals and organisations such as GMB union, West Copeland Partnership Trust and the County Council.

Balfour Beatty supply the care items such as shower gel and toiletries, which are given as a welcome pack to each new resident.

There is always more help needed

in a variety of ways and the staff are keen to see more people involved in supporting the work.

The work of Calderwood House doesn’t stop at giving shelter - where the homeless can’t be housed, for whatever reason, the staff collect donations to help – especially with a hard winter predicted for this year.

Rachel Holliday said: “What we need coming up to winter is secondhand medium-to-large size rucksacks with winter sleeping bags, thick gloves and water proof trousers, hats.”

Calderwood coast to coast challenge

BY COLIN CARTMELL-BROWNE STAFF and friends of Calderwood House are used to doing ambitious and challenging things to raise money but this might just be the most adventurous yet.

The team - currently consisting of Keith Donald ‘Duck’, George Carr and Janet Fairclough also plan to do the Coast to Coast walk from Robin Hood Bay to St Bees.

Doesn’t sound challenging enough? They also intend on trying to climb three peaks along the route, while wearing full military kit.

Oh and just in case you thought they’ll be stopping at hotels and B&B’s along the route.

They won’t. No tents either just bivy bags to sleep in.

The target is to complete the challenge in 7 days, setting off on Tuesday November 1.

BY ALAN CLEAVER SPENDING time in detention, out of hours, at Whitehaven’s Archive Centre sounds like a threat, but the prospect brought record visitor numbers to the

Scotch Street venue for its latest Discovery Open Evening.

Nearly 30 visitors braved the humiliation of old school photographs, many bringing their own along, and were able to sample the further delights of school log books, 19th century

punishment books, admission registers and calligraphic exercise in English and Latin.

Genuine exam and test questions from archive files had more than one former teacher shaking their heads, and the cringeworthy content of some of the old school magazines brought a level of hilarity not usually seen in the classroom.

Discovery Open Evenings are held at Whitehaven Archive and Local Studies Centre on the third Tuesday of each month.

Archive documents are set out on display and refreshments are available. Entry is free.

The next session is Tuesday, November 15, when you will be able to view an exhibition about the Somme in addition to other local archives.

Whitehaven Archive and Local Studies Centre is next to the police station on Scotch Street, and doors open at 7pm.

Finding Maggy Alan Cleaver reveals the identity of Maggy, the woman who gave her name to Maggy’s Lonning and Maggy’s bridge at Loweswater.

MAGGY’S Lonning at Loweswater has not quite lost its character despite it being a tarmacked road.

It is a single track road (NY 13587 21016) that leads to the impossiblysmall car park by Loweswater and I've always had a soft spot for it.

Perhaps it's the loneliness in the north-western corner of the Lake District that gives it its appeal or perhaps it's the name.

Who was Maggy and why was the lonning named after her? And there's also a packhorse bridge nearby called Maggy's Bridge (even OS mark it as such) so she appears to have been at one time a famous or well-loved person in the valley. I did once ask the farmer who Maggy was but he said no-one knew. Well, thanks to the astonishing work of the British Newspaper Archives, I've now found out something about her.

The British Newspaper Archives are slowly but surely scanning in 400 years of newspaper archives into digital format, making the easily accessible and, more importantly, searchable. I've used it many times and was randomly surfing one morning when a search for lonning came up with a note about Maggy's Lonning at Loweswater. It was in The Cumberland Pacquet for 1833:

“VILLAGE FAME - A clever and worthy old lady, sister to the eldest of the three venerable men named in the preceding paragraph (ie John Mirehouse, of Miresike, who died aged 102) and who died at the good old age of 98 years, although never the owner of a foot of land has had the honour of having her name perpetuated in her native vale (Loweswater) in Maggy’s Lonning (lane or road), Maggy’s Bridge, Maggy’s Gate, Maggy’s House, Maggy’s Garden and her ‘flowers grown wild’ and even the very birds in Maggy’s Robin and various anecdotes of Maggy’s sayings and doings. Poor Maggy! Her garden no longer smiles, and her house now lies in ruins.”

The preceding paragraph talked about the Mirehouse family which “furnishes such instances of longevity as are rarely to be met with”. In particular it spoke of Maggy’s brother, John Mirehouse, who died in 1807 at the age of 102. A further Google search revealed that The Literary Panorama (published 1808) told how on his 100th birthday he “received a very numerous party of his neighbours (“all his

juniors”) seated in a new oak chair, and clothed in a new coat, which, he pleasantly observed, might, with care taken, serve his life-time.”

But what more of Maggy? The tantalising paragraph indicates she was indeed well loved and something of a village character but sadly not much more. Research in this age of Google can almost be too easy but a family tree on geni.com and references in Google Books revealed she had been born on St Valentine's Day 1714 in Loweswater and later married to become Margaret Longmire. She died in her 93rd year on Tuesday, July 14th 1807 according to The Athanaeum Vol 2 (published 1807) at Thrushbank, Loweswater. But the Pacquet said she lived to be 98. Further research may resolve that mystery although the burial records kindly put online by the Lorton & Derwent Fells Local History Society does not include her.

So for now, we can at least revive the identity of Maggy as Maggy Longmire (nee Mirehouse) who was born on February 14th, 1714 and died in 1807 or 1813. And at least we still have her lonning - and bridge.

Gosforth gets crafty with knitting

A GROUP of crafters aim to raise money for charity by getting busy with the knitting needles.

The idea came from Joey Hufton, one half of Relatively Crafty Lasses, during one of the regular craft fairs in Gosforth.

Joey explained: “Originally I thought we’d just use the odds and ends of wool we have left over but then someone suggested we use local wool instead.”

So now the wool is now being provided by Lesley Ward, from her Rainbow Herdwicks, and her flock of sheep before being dyed and spun by Kathy Cartmell-Browne, owner of Qerky Crafts.

The wool will then be passed around to the regular attendees of the craft fairs who will then knit, stitch, crochet or felt, small, 6x6 inch squares.

Finally Joey will then sew these together to produce a Cumbrian made blanket. This blanket will be the main

BY RACHAEL GREALISH IT’s a time for celebration and a new generation as a Cumbria Rungwe Community Link (CRCL) launches a new cycle.

The CRCL is opening up to a new cycle of students from all around Cumbria to take part in the two-year cultural exchange.

The charity launched the cycle with an event at Bigrigg Village Hall, on Friday October 7, welcoming dozens of students and adults from the local area eager to get involved.

At the event newcomers were able to look at the charity’s past achievements and adventures as well as talk to past students who have been involved with charity.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this will be the beginning of the 15th two-year cycle cultural exchange cultural exchange charity between students from Cumbria and Rungwe, a district in the Mbeya region of Tanzania.

The new cycle is aimed at students in year 11 and 12, only, to get involved in the two-year project- the cycle has two climax points - an inward visit in the first year, where students from Tanzania come to Cumbria for three weeks and an outward visit in the second year where students from Cumbria spend a month in Tanzania.

During the two years the Cumbrian students will take on different fundraising opportunities to raise

money for ongoing projects in Rungwe, Tanzania - they will also participate in events that will support and involve the local community.

Jessica Jenkinson was part of the 2014 to 2016 cycle and went out to Tanzania this year.

She said: “Being a part of both the inward and outward visit proved to be a very fulfilling for me. This was down to being reunited with the students that came over England and meeting all of their families.”

The launch event will offer prospective students the opportunity to speak to leaders of the charity, past students who have been involved and to learn more about the opportunity of being involved.

Beth Young was also part of the recent student cycle that went out to Tanzania, she said: “One of the reasons I got involved was because the charity offers such a unique experience and a chance to experience whole different culture.”

Adults from the community, who would be interested in volunteering for charity, are also encouraged to go to get in touch with the charity to find out how they can be part of the CRCL. The CRCL rely on volunteers from the community to keep it going and acknowledge thanks to both Copeland Community Fund and Cumbria County Council that help fund the project.

The crafters took a vote on which charity should benefit from all this hard work with the North Air Ambulance Service coming out on top.

Gosforth Craft fair meets in Gosforth Village Hall on the second Saturday of the month throughout the year.

Dates for future meetings will be: November 12 and December 10.

Toddlers help St Bees Toddler Group hosted a coffee morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Research in September.

The event was well attended, with lots of coffee, tea and cake enjoyed, helping them to raise £245. The group would like to thank everyone who came along.

Thanks were also given to B’s Bakes, Cake House Cumbria, The Beacon, The Funhouse, The Gaiety Cinema, The Rum Story, Richardson’s of Whitehaven and holistic therapist Zoe Bettinson who donated raffle prizes.

Don’t panic – but do prepare T was wonderful to see so many familiar faces at the recent Practice Open Evening.

As we showed the folks around, many shared stories of how the practice used to be.

THE next meeting of Lamplugh Heritage Society will hear a talk by Jenni Lister on the early days of schooling in Whitehaven.

Jenni's talk - The Development of Education in Whitehaven - will be delivered on Thursday, October 27 at 7.30pm in Lamplugh Village Hall.

THERE will be some extra farmers markets in Egremont Market Hall in the run-up to Christmas. The regular one takes place on Friday, November 18 and the extra ones take place on Friday, November 5 and Friday, December 2. Plenty of quality local items for you to select Christmas presents from! The market features local arts, crafts and food all at good value prices. The market runs from 9.30am to 1pm in the Egremont Market Hall.

AFTER 42 years in business Egremont veterinary surgery has had a major revamp.

Millcroft Veterinary Group in Egremont has undergone renovations to modernise the reception and waitingroom area for patrons of the vets.

John Sedgwick, whose father, Jack, opened the veterinary surgery 42 years ago, said: “We really just wanted to modernise the look of the surgery and utilise this area that was completely not in use.

“My father opened this 42 years ago - and hopefully we’ve given it a

nice new look that will last another 42 years.”

The vet’s reception, which now opens on to Egremont Main Street, has been revamped from a previously disused garage.

Now there is more room in the surgery for patients and newly renovated consultation and operating rooms.

At the open evening on Friday October 7 patrons of the surgery were able to view the renovations, throughout, and gave positive feedback to the new look.

After a short closure, due to the renovations, the surgery is now open and in full use.

Then, sitting down on Saturday, I switched on the television and found one of my favourite programmes – Dad’s Army. Even today we use many of the catchphrases, especially that from Mr Jones the butcher, ‘Don’t panic’. I felt this was so appropriate at the moment, as many pet owners prepare for the autumnal months when the long dark evenings are full of the smell of bonfires and fireworks.

Many owners get very anxious and their pets pick up on this and get more nervous themselves. Try to act and behave as normal, as your dog will pick up on any odd behaviour. Remain calm, happy and cheerful, as this will send positive signals to your dog.

Reward calm behaviour with dog treats or playing with toys of interest.

In addition, make sure that your dog or cat always has somewhere to hide.

Make sure that your dog is on a lead and has a collar and is microchipped (which equally helps us to reunite cats with their owners as well) just in case they do run off and get handed in to the vet’s surgery or police.

When it gets dark close the windows and curtains and put on music to mask and muffle the sound of fireworks. It's fine to comfort your pet if it helps them relax, or leave them alone unless you think they will harm themselves. Let them decide what they prefer; some need that reassurance from a relaxed owner whilst others prefer their own space. Never punish your pets when they're scared as this will only makes

things worse in the long run. Overall it is advisable to make sure that your cat or dog is always kept in a safe and secure environment and can’t escape if there’s a sudden noise. Longer term, you can contact an animal behaviourist or try a desensitising CD called “Sounds Scary” which can be played at ever increasing sound levels to familiarise your pet with these strange bangs and whizzes whilst there are also non-medical treatments, such as plugin diffusers of calming pheromones for both dogs and cats, as well as feed supplements such as Zylkene and Calmex which do not contain medication but can help. All these items can be purchased at the surgery.

As a final option the vet can prescribe sedative tablets but this would only be after a full clinical examination and with the caveat that it is not a guaranteed dosing regime (every animal is different), needs to be given nearly an hour before the predicted start of the fireworks (or the animal’s adrenaline will override it) and only makes them appear sedated (on the inside they are terrified). That is why we are often reticent at freely handing these drugs out.

It’s not just dogs and cats that are affected. Don’t forget small animals like cage birds, rabbits and guinea pigs or horses. If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets, so that one area is well sound-proofed. Make sure that your pet is still able to look out and provide lots of extra bedding so your pet has something to burrow in or, in the case of horses, stable them with a radio and light on (ensuring that they are used to this in advance of the time).

Liars from all over the UK are set to head to the Santon Bridge Inn as the World’s Biggest Liar competition is to take place on Thursday November 17.

The annual ‘stand-up’ competition is for telling the tallest tales possible, and fibbers travel from all around the world to reveal their most convincing lie without scripts or props.

White Mare named Best Newcomer in Pub Awards Children’s atlas features gurning

BY RACHAEL GREALISH CUMBRIA has once again been put on the national map as one pub brought home the prize.

The White Mare, in Beckermet, has claimed the title of Best Newcomer at the The Great British Pub Awards 2016, on Wednesday October 5.

The White Mare was up against tough competition, but fought off hundreds of pubs across the UK that entered.

Dianne Irving, who owns the White Mare with her husband Ian, said: “We’re absolutely delighted, it was completely unexpected and we were just delighted to be there in the final – but we won!”

The competition, which took place at the Hilton, Park Lane, in London, had pubs from all over the UK attend in hope their pub would take the prize in one of the 16 categories available.

The White Mare was the only Cumbrian pub to take home a national prize that evening.

The White Mare re-opened in May 2015, after a £400,000 make-over that saw the entirety of the White Mare being stripped back to the bare walls and fully re-floored.

This is not the first win for the pub, earlier this year The White Mare claimed the title of Best Pub in Cumbria in the National Pub and Bar Awards at the national awards event in London in May.

The Great British Pub Awards are organised by the Morning Advertiser and are to: ‘celebrate the trades finest operators’.

The annual awards are widely recognised as “the Oscars” of the pub and bar trade and attract thousands of entries from across the country.

A NEW children’s atlas of bizarre events and traditions in the UK has included Egremont Crab Fair.

Atlas of Oddities, by Clive Gifford and Tracy Worrall, is designed to teach children about the world, through quirky and unusual facts.

The book has a map of quirky traditions in Britain - one of which is the Crab Fair and World Gurning Championship.

Egremont's entry reads: “A Crab Fair has been held in the village since 1267, but in more recent times it has

been home to the World Gurning Championships.

Contestants put their head through a horse collar and pull a ridiculous face.”

Crab Fair, which will celebrate its 750th anniversary next year, started by the Lord of Egremont, of giving away crab apples and this year hailed a new gurning champion: Aiden from Coventry.

The book features facts that explore bizarre feats of human ingenuity, incredible technology, obscure foods and talented animals.

Clive Gifford has over 150 books published, in a variety of genre, since the age of 16.

The atlas was inspired by Gifford’s own travels around the world due to his parents work on an airline.

Tracy Worrall, from Liverpool, has worked with the Discovery Channel, DK, National Trust, Tate Galleries and Saatchi and Saatchi.

Other facts in the book include that the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel was daredevil Annie Edson Taylor in 1901, aged 63; and Sport Club do Recife, a football club in Brazil, once hired the fans’ own mothers as security guards.

BY RACHAEL GREALISH THOUSANDS flocked to Whitehaven to help make the Whitehaven market relaunch a success.

After six months planning by Copeland Borough Council and Whitehaven Town Council, the longdepleted market was relaunched with 40 newly uniformed stalls for local businesses and charities, on Thursday September 29 to Sunday October 2.

The revamped market was officially opened on Saturday, October 1 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, by Copeland elected mayor Mike Starkie and Whitehaven town mayor Raymond Gill.

The event was set off in tradition as the Town Crier, Rob Romano, walked from the top of King Street to the Market Place where he recited the 1672 Whitehaven Market Charter.

The Market revamp was down to the £66,000 investment from Whitehaven Town Council and included not only the regular stall holders, but a range of new ones and continental stalls for the opening.

Mr Starkie said: “The Whitehaven Market relaunch was a fantastic event enjoyed by thousands of people. The atmosphere was universally agreed to be wonderful with a wide variety of stalls selling a myriad of goods.

“I would like to thank all the stallholders, shoppers and visitors who combined to make the event such a great success.

“The combination of the Continental Market with the new Market stalls worked really well and the quality and variety of goods on offer made for a great few days.

“Shopkeepers are telling me that their takings were up because of the numbers of extra people in Whitehaven on the market days.”

TRAVEL around our wonderful county quite a lot, mostly by car.

However, last month I did something for the first time…I got on the train at Maryport and travelled to the south-west corner of Cumbria.

The views were magnificent…

Scotland and Isle of Man one way and the whole of the western Lake District the other. You see estuaries such as at Ravenglass and the beautiful Duddon. If you go ‘off peak’ the return fare is the same as the single, in fact I got over three and a half hours of amazing views for less than a tenner. If you haven’t done it I really recommend it!

I felt I was seeing things from a different perspective; familiar places looked different from the vantage of the train and I saw hidden away places that I had not previously seen. On the way back I chatted to a chap who was about to walk the Coast to Coast, commencing, as he put it, ‘a journey of

When the wind and tide are both against you it is quite a struggle and a big sea behind you can easily tip you over. The key is to roll up, keep smiling and paddle on.

Life itself is a journey. We know not quite where it will take us, life is unpredictable and we all need to make the best of the hand we have been dealt.

The market will now run regularly on Thursdays and Saturdays and the council are looking to Christmas and further market events in the future.

Cumbria’s gluten-free fair a success

The fair was hailed a success by organisers, stall holders and attendees.

Coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten - gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their immune system reacts by damaging the lining of the small intestine.

THERE wasn’t a stalk of wheat in sight and coeliacs had nothing to fear as hundreds attended the only Cumbrian gluten-free food festival.

The annual Coeliac Food Fair drew in hundreds to the Penrith Leisure Centre, on Saturday October 8, to celebrate all things gluten free and support the growing Coeliac community.

Over 40 stalls, including a mixture of national and local business, were present at the fair giving away free samples and selling completely gluten-free goods.

There were many small business and even some local to Cumbria, such

as Fiends Fell - an Egremont Farmers Market regular.

Jane Hurd, a coeliac sufferer and owner and baker of Fiends Fell, said: “It’s so important that we, the coeliac community, have fairs like this and are able to see just how many other people are in the same boat.

“It’s also important so that coeliac sufferers are able to see just how much is on offer - food-wise - and how much variety there can be while eating gluten free.”

Among the national stalls were: Schär UK, Genius and Glutafin, along with ranges from major supermarkets such as: Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer.

Greens’ gluten free beers: There’s certain things you miss when you have to eat gluten free and for me, this summer, it was a beer at the BBQ - Greens had it covered at the fair - with eight different types there was something for everyone - and you really can tell the difference!

My favourite was the lager, it was light, fruity, zesty and would go perfect with any meal.

Feel Free Foods Donuts: No where does gluten free donuts but this company did and they were delicious - I could’ve wolfed them down like Homer Simpson.

Well Foods pizza base: I love pizza, I’m a terrible chef with bread and I like a deep pan - but not doughy. Not picky at all! Well, Well Foods had it covered with their award winning pizza bases! You could pop toppings on them and straight in the oven and they were a perfect deep pan pizza - plus you could freeze them!

ST BEES was the place to be for all the green thumbs of Copeland, last month, who had a question needing answered.

St Bees Village Hall committee held a very successful Gardeners’ Question Time on Friday October 7 at the St Bees ‘Hodgetts’ village hall.

The panel consisted of local experts.

These included: Toni Magean (Whitehaven News), Stuart Murfitt (Whitehaven Garden Centre), Grainne Jacobsen (gardener, cook and National Garden Scheme member, Woodend), Alistair Hewitson (St Bees Garden Society) and Mark Hewertson (winner of national awards from the National

Allotment Association and the Royal National Rose Society).

They displayed a good mix of expert knowledge, common sense and humour in dealing with a huge range of questions from the capacity audience.

Questions covered a range of subjects such as how to deal with pernicious weeds such as Ground Elder, how to prune camellias and fruit trees, controlling slugs, snails and mice, improving lawns and so on.

There was lots of audience participation, too, with discussions on what to grow in exposed areas battered by salt winds, the best varieties of particular flowers or fruit to suit St Bees (apparently “Sunset” apple is good) and how to deal with many other local gardening challenges.

The packed audience left with new knowledge and hints – and the reassurance from the whole panel that for nearly everyone, getting a good compost heap is pretty hard work.

The evening raised £220 towards fundraising efforts to improve the kitchen and other facilities in the hall and the Hall Committee are now looking forward to the next big event to be held at Hodgett’s – St Bees’ very own Pantomime version of Snow White in January.

Get on the road with Rosehill ROSEHILL Theatre may still be under redevelopment but that doesn’t stop Rosehill on the Road from staging events - and there are two cracking artists lined-up for November.

On Thursday, November 10 it will be the turn of James Acaster to deliver the laughs at Moorclose community Centre Theatre, in Workington.

Tickets are £15.

And on Saturday, December 17, get into the festive mood with Shappi Khorsandi who will be at Cleator Moor Civic Hall with her new show, Oh My Country. Tickets are £15.

HITEHAVEN will be dancing along to Jolan as part of a £30,000 six-week Christmas extravaganza.

The town is set to be transformed into a winter wonderland to celebrate the Christmas light switch-on.

Whitehaven’s festivities kick off on Sunday November 20, as The Voice finalist and Moor Row lad, Jolan, is set to press the button to switch on the lights at 5pm on the day.

Along with Jolan, CFM will be on hand to provide entertainment on the day.

Jolan will also perform a concert at Whitehaven Civic Hall later that evening in partnership with Rosehill Theatre Group.

Kids will get the chance to meet their favourite superheroes and pose with their favourite princesses as they patrol the streets.

But that isn’t quite the main event - on Saturday November 26 the

community has been told to get their skates on as St Nicholas’ Church gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland - including an ice rink, snow machine and Christmas tunes for six weeks.

This is all part of the Whitehaven Christmas extravaganza, which hopes to attract people from as far north as Carlisle and as far south as Barrow.

Schools are also being encouraged to use the ice rink free of charge during term time.

Whitehaven’s Christmas Extravaganza will kick off on Sunday November 20 with the Christmas light switch-on and a performance by Jolan.

Carlisle light switch on will take place Sunday November 20 celebrity acts are set to join the local talent for a day of music and family fun.

Bugenhagen band rocks Egremont with album launch

When and How did Bugenhagen start: Bugenhagen were formed in September 2015 by Paul Fligg and Johnny Turpin -introduced by music producer Lee Shackley. Recently Dave Rule joined them on bass guitar to create the current three piece line up.

How did you come up with the name, Bugenhagen?

Bugenhagen is the name of a character in the film 'The Omen'. Johnny likes the film and for some reason had always fancied calling a band after the character.

What inspires the music you write?

This album is inspired by the recent regrowth in progressive rock music.

Artists like Steven Wilson are getting an increasingly large fan base and progressive music seems to be on the up again at the moment.

Performers at the ready: Steve Wharton performing in Ennerdale and ready to take to the Egremont stage STORYTELLING songs are set to enthral and inspire in West Cumbria.

Cumbrian Songs and Stories is a one-man show by Arlecdon based musician and storyteller Steve Wharton.

Initially developed for Holiday Fellowship’s guests at their hotel in Portinscale, audiences are taken on a cultural tour of Cumbria through a collection of traditional and original songs, poems, stories and dialect pieces.

Steve is now offering open floor spots at forthcoming performances of

the show for performers of material related to the county.

The first opportunity for those in the Egremont area will be during a full theatrical version of the show at Florence Mine, Egremont at 7.30pm on Saturday November 26, alongside local fiddle player Ryan Wood and singer Katie Gentry.

What musician are you most like?

We sound a lot like Pink Floyd at times - with a bit of Steven Wilson, Marillion and Genesis thrown in. Quite a retro sound on this album.

The three of us love all the prog rock stuff from the seventies, eighties and recent stuff. Paul is also heavily influenced by bands like Biffy Clyro, Incubus and other bands who have put a modern twist on progressive rock.

REVIEW: Girlfriend and a Korma blast to the past

The Smiths cover band Girlfriend and a Korma took Florence Arts Centre by storm, on October 13, 2016, and relived the day the band came to Carlisle for the Queen is Dead tour - on the same date 30 years earlier.

REVIEW: Wow from Frank Bowe

Local Frank Bowe’s return to Egremont for a performance at Florence Arts Centre on Saturday October 1 was warmly greeted by many who remembered the many entertaining nights in the pubs of Egremont.

Before the audience was taken on a trip down memory lane, they were treated to Whitehaven’s Lee Adams.

The younger artist was not intimidated by the occasion and melded his musical tastes to bridge the generation gap, with charming

comments like :“I wasn’t sure what to expect, so here’s a Dean Martin song” before belting out ‘That’s Amore’ on the piano in between Prince’s hit ‘Purple Rain’ and Adele’s 007 film theme song ‘Skyfall’.

It was not the last of the talented youngster, as the audience welcomed Adams back, as he joined Bowe at the beginning of his second set, to play the piano while Bowe was playing the musical saw for ‘Tears for Fears’ melancholy hit ‘Mad World’.

For Bowe it was an emotional return to his home town, as his father had worked at the mine that is now home to the Arts Centre.

REVIEW: Lol Goodman’s stunning Egremont return

BY ROBERT HAILE THE Lol Goodman Band returned with Whitehaven’s Northern Threads to Florence Arts Centre on Friday September 23.

After their last visit the Lol Goodman Band has gone from strength to strength and have a deal with Universal Music Group.

Their original songs and sound would have to wait, as local group Northern Threads opened for the Manchester band.

The four piece band played with passion and energy, performing covers of Oasis and the Artic Monkeys, along

with their own material such as ‘Pass You By’.

The showmanship of Lol and the band was expressed from the off, as Lol joined the band from the back of the venue while the rest of the band were playing.

Playing many of the songs that were to be re-released on their album ‘Just Wanna Say’.

The performance showed how even a band that has a record deal has to keep evolving, as the songs had a new energy and sound to them that has firmly placed The Lol Goodman Band as a leading Blues Band and one that those that left early will rue missing as they won’t be playing many small venues in their future.

Starting out on the accordion Bowe played well known songs by Steve Earl ‘Galway Girl’ and The Specials ‘Ghost Town’ before giving a brief history on the Blues Harp or Harmonica and playing a his own version of a chase called a Fox Chase.

The crowd were then treated to local hunting songs and some stories about how Bowe had gathered them.

Including how he had recorded ‘Dodger’ after the Crab Fair.

After a short break, Bowe returned with more tales and some of his own material thrown in, such as the heartfelt ‘Egremont Red’, showing his love of the town he left.

The whole night was enjoyable and a must repeat in a special venue that holds many memories for the area and is creating new ones too.

Frizington community café open for business

BY ROBERT HAILE IT was a quiet night of folk music at Florence Arts Centre on Saturday, October 8, as Burnt Horse and Stooshie visited Egremont.

Up first was Burnt Horse.

The east Cumbrian five piece warmed the small crowd up with various cover versions from well known artists such as Bob Dylan to the very talented Jonny Flynn.

The group’s harmonies was shown perfectly in their final number ‘I don’t wanna pray’ to round out an impressive showing.

It won’t be long before they are headlining their own concerts.

After a short break Stooshie took to the stage, playing two sets on the night.

The relaxed performance was accompanied with plenty of audience interaction.

A night of high energy songs such as ‘Jenny’s Chickens’ were mixed with slower songs such as ‘The Water’ that gave the audience a chance to catch their breath as the four piece weaved seamlessly through a variety of songs.

The musical talent on show was coupled with the groups’ ability to hold an audience with song and talk as the Florence sound system suffered a surprising technical failure.

BY CRAIG WISHART AFTER a five week refurbishment Sandra Dorgan finally opened the doors to the Lingla Café and Gift shop opened in Frizington.

Sandra, from Bowthorn in Cleator Moor, spent five weeks refurbishing the upper floor of St Paul’s church and has created a warm, inviting space for people to relax and enjoy some home cooked food.

She said: “Since the former café closed three years ago there was nothing in town.

“There are no pubs that serve food and it’s something the community has missed. I would really like to create a place for the community a friendly little hub for people to come together.”

And why wouldn’t you? You can start the day with a cooked breakfast or stop in for lunch and take your pick from the varied menu of tasty treats.

There are salads and light bites available or if you’re feeling like something a bit more hearty there are jacket potatoes, hamburgers, pies, curries, chilli, lasagne or the old favourite fish and chips.

If homemade chips won’t tempt you to linger then why not settle into the cosy couches and take your pick from the selection of hot drinks, shakes or juices.

While you’re there you might as well browse over the cakes or take a sweet bite from the desert menu.

On Sundays the café offers a traditional roast dinner and on Fridays there’s an OAP discount off an already reasonably priced menu.

The café is open for everyone and there’s a lift for disabled access.

Sandra is committed to keeping things local and giving back to the

community.

She said: “The café has created two part time jobs for local people.

The sweets come from Cake House in Egremont and the coffee is sourced through the charitable Calderwood House which helps our returned servicemen and women.”

Sandra is keen to work with small groups and charities, already the café has hosted an afternoon tea in support of Macmillan Cancer Support which raised £436.

The Lingla café is now open in Frizington for everyone to enjoy.

REVIEW: ‘Countries that don’t exist’ – Nick Middleton at Theatre by the Lake how many countries exist today.

A popular classification is that a country must be recognised by the United Nations but then we find each part of the UK doesn’t exist – only the United Kingdom as a whole has a seat at the UN. As such, England could have gone into his book.

Nick Middleton explained he had enough non-recognised countries to fill several volumes and decided to leave out those such as British ones because they are otherwise well-established.

Instead, the fifty countries detailed in his book range from surprisingly large and important – like Somaliland with a population of 3.5 million trying to establish independence from a ravaged and chaotic Somalia – to the bizarre and unlikely such as the Isle of Man and the one-man North Sea island of Forvik.

My favourite is the Australian people of Murrawarri who gave our Queen four weeks to explain why she had the right to be their monarch. She didn’t respond and so they declared independence in 2013.

At least, according to an Oxford geography don anyway; and then only ‘sort of’.

Welcome to strange and vague world of ‘countries that don’t’ exist.

TV presenter and Royal Geographical Society Fellow, Nick Middleton introduced a full house at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake to the strange world we live in which is the topic of his new book: An Atlas of Countries That Don’t Exist.

It would have been easy to expect a dry and disinterested talk on an obscure and insignificant subject – but nothing was further from the truth.

In fact, Nick Middleton turned out to be witty with an uncanny eye for finding the facts that fascinate yet still managed to give a rounded understanding of each of the countries to a spell-bound audience.

Many a geography teacher and lecturer could learn from this man.

He explained that the whole idea of ‘countries’ ‘nations’ and ‘states’ is so vague that there is no one agreed definition of any of these terms nor of

Half a million raised as charity launches 7th winter appeal

Don’t let them be caught out in the cold - help the 300 who can’t help themselves.

-Photo by Jamelah AS many as 300 older people die every winter across Cumbria because of the effects of the cold weather.

Monday October 17 saw the launch of a major appeal to help older people stay warm this winter.

Cumbria Community Foundation is encouraging people to donate to the Winter Warmth Appeal which last year helped more than 1,000 older Cumbrians out of fuel poverty.

The Appeal was set up in 2010 when a few leading Cumbrians decided they wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payments to support others who were less fortunate than themselves. Since then, half a million pounds has been raised.

Anyone born before May 6 1953 is automatically entitled to the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment and for many people this is vital. While no one wants to see the end of this universal benefit, some people can manage without it and are putting it to good use.

The money raised is distributed in partnership with Age UK West Cumbria, Age UK Carlisle and Eden, Age UK South Lakeland and The Oaklea Trust, and last year went a long way in helping vulnerable older people

in Cumbria keep warm throughout the winter.

Hilda Peace, 65, from Carlisle benefited from a grant last winter, she said: “I hesitate to put the heating on all the time because of the cost and I know the costs are going to rise again this year, which is a real problem. I live on my own and struggle to keep warm.

“I don’t like to go out much in winter in case I slip and have an accident so I prefer to stay in. I usually go to bed at 7pm to stay warm and avoid putting the heating on. I didn’t like to ask for help as I thought there were people worse off than me but someone persuaded me to apply and I’ve had a grant for the last three years now.

“I think it’s a generational thing but we need to break through the barrier of getting older people to ask for help when they need it. I think it’s wonderful the work you do and I’m sure you help lots of people. I would encourage anyone to apply.”

Cumbria has a super aging population; the number of older people living in the county has risen dramatically over the last six years.

Between 2009 and 2015, there was an

increase of 10,000 people aged 60 and over living in Cumbria.

Andy Beeforth, Chief Executive of Cumbria Community Foundation, said: “Every winter, in every corner of Cumbria, there are older people who are struggling to keep warm.

“As our aging population increases, it is vital that we are in a position to help. We never want to have to say no to helping an older, vulnerable person in need and that’s why this year’s appeal is challenging the people of Cumbria to join together and beat last year’s record amount raised.

“The people of Cumbria have been consistently brilliant at supporting this important appeal, thank you so much to all that have donated so far.”

To raise even more money for the appeal, the Foundation is also hosting the fourth Big Sleep on Saturday 28th January 2017 where people are sponsored to spend a night sleeping under the stars on the shore of Lake Windermere when temperatures have previously plummeted to minus 6 degrees.

Gowers takes Lowes artist of the month

ARTIST of the month for October at Lowes Court Gallery, Egremont, is landscape painter Dave Gowers. Having been brought up in Margate and now living on the Cumbrian coast, Dave has always lived by the sea, from which he draws his inspiration.

The paintings he is exhibiting at Lowes Court take as their main theme the relationship between sea and sky, using essentially flat areas on the surface to produce powerful harmonies of tone, colour and depth. Into these are often interwoven strands and blazes of bright colour, possibly suggesting lights at night from coastal towns or from shipping passing out at sea.

Although Dave’s work could be viewed as semi-abstract, the atmosphere he creates through his use of colour and layers of varnish make the paintings almost three dimensional in depicting the weather and mood of vast open spaces.

The paintings will be on show for the whole of October, and Lowes Court is open Tues-Sat 10am to 2pm, and until 5pm on Thursdays. October is also the open exhibition at Lowes Court with many local artists taking part.

Callum’s gardening corner…

AS we move into November things in the garden will have slowed down apart from the falling leaves which will be falling rapidly.

The main focus really this month is to make sure the garden is prepared and tidy for the coming winter months.

To look at a untidy garden during the winter can be very annoying but also a worry for some.

Continue to prune back any shrubs which are in need of pruning. Any late flowering perennials which have finished flowering can also be pruned back.

Keep on top of collecting fallen leaves and use these to make leaf mould which can be used next year for mulching borders in the garden.

In the vegetable garden winter digging can begin.

It’s also a good time to spread well rotted manure or garden compost on vacant ground, this then has the time

to break down into the soil.

Any bulbs which were not planted last month can be done this month, likewise spring bedding plants should be planted sooner rather than later.

Roses, after they have flowered can be given a light prune to help prevent root disturbance from strong winds; then hard pruned in March.

Lawns should be looking good given the good Autumn weather and may require a topping off to keep them looking neat.

I would also edge the lawns with a sharp edging iron to give good defining edges to really make the garden look neat.

Towards the end of the month any plants which need moving to new places in the garden can be done once they are dormant.

It’s also a good time of year to plant new trees, shrubs and hedges.

Freeze it – Cheese, milk, fruit and vegetables; there’s so much food you probably weren’t aware you could freeze!

Avoid unnecessary waste by freezing portions – like popping individual chicken breasts in freezer bags so you don’t have to defrost the whole pack. Or putting a loaf of sliced bread in the freezer and taking out slices when you need it.

Be supermarket savvy – There are plenty of deals to be had, but don’t get drawn in by the first one you come across.

It pays to do your research – mysupermarket.com is a great way to scan the shop prices from the comfort of your armchair.

Either use it that day or pop it in the freezer for another meal. Make sure you only buy something if you know you can use it, not just because it’s a bargain!

Timing is everything – Head to the supermarket later in the day, ideally about an hour before it closes, when all the items due to go out of date the following day will be heavily reduced. This is a great way to get hold of expensive fresh foods at a smidge of the cost, some less than 10p! – just freeze them for later.

Don’t be fooled - many supermarket deals aren’t always as good as they seem. Multi-buy deals might sound great, but double check the price of a single item as often the saving isn’t that much.

Check the small print - It’s also worth checking the price per unit as this will tell you how much you are really getting for your money.

For example, a pack of margarine costing 89p might have seemed like the cheaper option compared to the one for £1.80 until you discovered the price per 100g is 36p as opposed to 17.8p.

Watch where you’re looking – Supermarkets put a lot of effort into designing their layout so you spend more money.

THE Church Council of the Parish of Lamplugh with Ennerdale has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the St Michael’s Church Lamplugh Restoration Project.

The project aims to restore and preserve this beautiful and historic church for the future, by stabilising the movement of the walls, stopping water ingress and repairing water damage to the fabric and windows. It is hoped that work will begin in the latter half of 2017.

Development funding of £8,000 has been awarded to help the Church Council to progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

The proposed essential and extensive conservation work, together with improved dedicated lighting will

provide a welcoming environment for the community, in which information about the church as well as the work of local community groups will be displayed for all local residents and visitors.

The building has always been a focal point for the local community.

It sits in a prominent position on the boundary of the Lake District National Park, beside the popular Coast to Coast cycle route.

It was rebuilt in 1870 being the only church in Cumberland designed by William Butterfield and features fine stained glass windows by Charles Eamer Kempe.

Mrs Martha Jackson, who has just retired after many years as Churchwarden says “It is wonderful to get this support from HLF. It will save our lovely historic church for future generations to enjoy.”

Explaining the importance of the HLF support, Sara Hilton, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund North West, said: “This is an important building both because of its role at the heart of the local community and because of its fascinating history.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, our support will help address urgent conservation needs and ensure the heritage of the church is shared widely. We look forward to seeing how plans develop over the coming months.”

HIS week, I called upon the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt to commit to intervene to ensure the retention and improvement of 24 hour consultant led services at the West Cumberland Hospital.

The renewed call comes after the recent visit of Health Minister Philip Dunne to the West Cumberland Hospital following years of invitations, Parliamentary Questions and questions to successive Prime Ministers, from me.

This visit followed an intervention made by the Secretary of State into the Success Regime process in Devon to provide reassurance over maternity services in there.

I have consistently argued that the Secretary of State for Health, who will ultimately decide whether or not to retain services at the Hospital, must see for himself the unique challenges faced

by Health Services in West Cumbria.

I’ve also argued that the Health Secretary must understand the immediate need for Government intervention to support the community in building a local Health economy fit for the 21st century.

Philip Dunne’s visit began with a meeting with Hospital Senior Management before a tour of the Hospital including the Accident and Emergency and Maternity units.

The Minister then held a private meeting with staff, followed by a meeting at, my request with local hospital campaigners.

A Health Minister has now seen the West Cumberland Hospital for himself, having travelled along the unsuitable A595, and having heard from patients, staff and campaigners, and now is the time for the government to provide our community with the assurances that we need and deserve regarding the future of our 24 hour consultant led services.

For too long, West Cumbria has been let down by Government. At her first Prime Minister’s questions, I asked Theresa May to visit the West Cumberland Hospital to see for herself the damage being caused by the policies of her government.

I received no reply. Before he left office, I wrote to David Cameron asking him to make good on the promises he made to gun shot victims as they laid in their beds, not to cut services at the West Cumberland Hospital. I chased No.10 for a reply – none appeared.

Jeremy Hunt was again invited to meet with local people at the recent

public meeting I held to discuss the Success Regime proposals.

Again, no reply. I have also called in Parliament for the same assurances given to North Devon regarding maternity services to be given to West Cumbria.

That assurance has not yet been made. This simply cannot continue.

During the Minister’s recent visit to the WCH, he saw for himself the remarkable work undertaken by the consultant led maternity unit.

On what was a quiet day, he saw two young mums who had recently given birth.

Each asked to speak with the Minister. Both were admitted as low risk cases, both experienced unforeseen difficulties and the transfer to Carlisle would have resulted in fatal consequences.

For a Health Minister to have spoken to the women, their families and medical professionals, and to have witnessed first hand the danger of removing 24 hour consultant led services from the WCH, the government must now intervene in this process and guarantee 24hr consultant lead maternity services at the West Cumberland Hospital.

The visit provided irrefutable proof that the removal of these 24/7 services from the West Cumberland Hospital will cost lives.

Now is the time for immediate investment in the future of our local services, for the release of the funding in full for phase two of the redevelopment of the West Cumberland Hospital, and for a genuine commitment to tackle the local recruitment crisis which can no longer be used as an excuse to asset strip our Hospital.

HERE has been much comment in the press this last few weeks about British jobs for British workers.

I am extremely keen that in Copeland we see local jobs go to local people, there is as we all know going to be significant amounts of work coming off in the local economy and wherever possible local people should be considered for those positions first and indeed when contracts are given out that local firms are given particular consideration and are supported to successfully tender for them.

I have had it fed back to me that some large contractors are subcontracting work to firms who are then bringing in workers from all around the country to fill jobs that could be occupied by local people.

This is totally unacceptable and will be investigated and if true the firms will be named and shamed and we will apply all the pressure we can to end such practices.

One firm in the local news quite a lot recently is West Cumbria Mining who have just run another successful open weekend to keep people up to date and engaged with their project to bring coal mining back to West Cumbria.

Their community engagement and stated commitment to employ hundreds of local people is a great example of the approach all the companies who are looking to benefit from the massive investment coming into Copeland should embrace.

I will be publicly highlighting firms who make positive impacts and

contributions in our community and exposing those that don’t.

Copeland is about to house some massive nationally significant projects that will contribute to wealth and prosperity of the UK. Copeland and more importantly the people of Copeland need to see and feel some real tangible benefit from that.

There has it appears been a rise in the number of firms appointing socio economic managers, what we now need is visibility of socio economic contributions and outcomes.

I am very keen in both Egremont and Millom to explore the opportunity of developing brand new swimming pools.

Apart from the obvious recreational benefits it will also help address some of our social issues such as childhood obesity and lack of exercise and as a coastal community I think it very important kids can learn to swim.

I am meeting with a group in Millom who have already started moving this initiative forward.

If there is a similar group in Egremont or people out there wishing to be part of one I would be keen to meet with them also.

Finally planning is about to start in earnest for the 750th anniversary of Egremont Crab Fair.

I feel this should be a great event that the whole community should support.

Anybody with ideas how they would like to see this event shaped please e-mail me and they can be considered by the committee.

A NIGHT of curry, wine and coming together to celebrate harvest.

In what seems to be replacing our annual Harvest Supper, over fifty people enjoyed a Fairtrade meal at St Mary’s and St Michael’s Parish Church Hall on Saturday October 1.

Curries and exotic puddings with Fairtrade ingredients were followed by a raffle, quiz and colouring competition for children.

Fairtrade prizes included wonderful handicrafts and quality wine. This, in addition to the free glass of Fairtrade wine with every meal, ensured a merry evening.

Over £600 for the work of Traidcraft Exchange was raised from tickets and sales of Traidcraft produce.

Every worker deserves a fair wage and the hope of a decent life, whether here in Britain or wherever they happen to live.

Traidcraft Exchange fights poverty through trade – not handouts – thereby helping people in developing countries to transform their lives.

OMETIMES copying (burning) a CD/DVD might be a better back up option than using an external hard drive.

To do this you are going to need:

* A CD/DVD drive capable of burning CDs. Most computers should have this function although older machines might have a CD drive which can ‘read’ files but not burn them. If you need to you can buy an external hard drive from PC World which connects to your computer via the USB port. * Specialist software. Unlike copying files to a hard drive or US memory stick you can’t just copy the files to a CD. There are many options of which software to use, some free, some you buy and some are trial versions. The computer magazine PC Adviser has a list here: www.pcadvisor.co.uk/download/windo ws/disc-burning/ For this tutorial I’m going to use a trial version of ‘Ashampoo Burning Studio Elements’ but most programs work in the same way, it’s just the wording of the options which will be different.

Colin talks us through how to back up your photos using a CD/DVD. Email your computer queries to Colin at colin@egremont2day.co.uk some super markets or shops like Wilkos.

A DVD can hold more data than a CD however you need to make sure your CD drive is capable or reading/writing a DVD. How many files you can save will depend on the type of file, e.g. you can save more word documents than photos. Also the number of photos you can save will depend on how big each file is.

CD/DVDs are usually a one use only.

Once you have burnt the contents onto

the CD/DVD you can’t change it or add to it. It is possible to get rewritable CD/DVDs but these usually cost more and hold slightly less information.

To create a back up: 1) Insert a blank CD/DVD into your computers’ CD Drive 2) Load up your chosen software.

3) Click ‘Burn Files and Folders’ then ‘Create a new CD/DVD’ (See figure 1) You will now be presented with the main work area. (See figure 2).

4) Clicking on ‘Add’ opens a new window similar to most PC applications. From here you can select a file or folder to add to the CD/DVD (see figure 3) Just click the file name and then click ‘add’ At the bottom of the main screen there is a bar which shows how much space is left on your CD/DVD. Its worth keeping an eye on this to ensure that you don’t go over the limit of the CD but also don’t leave lots of empty space which can’t be reused if the CD is not rewritable.

Once you have selected your files click ‘Next’ You will now be presented with a summary screen similar to figure 4. If you are happy with your options click

‘Write CD’ (or ‘Burn CD’ depending on the software being used) The software will now burn the information to the CD. How long this takes will depend on how much information is being burned.

Once done the computer will eject your CD/DVD. Some software gives you options such as printing a label, burning another CD or verifying the disc.

I always check the contents have burnt properly by opening up Windows Explorer and clicking on my CD/DVD drive and trying to open some of the files. If they open without problems then it’s safe to assume the process worked.

Once you’ve burnt your CD/DVD you need to store it in a safe place.

CD/DVDs are not unbreakable and any scratches can mean the loss of precious data.

So how long do CDs last?

YOU’VE back up your life’s work on a CD, put it in a top drawer and now quietly forget about it, happy in the knowledge that future generations will be able to read of your triumphs while on earth.

Not so fast. Manufacturers will tell you that CDs last for 200 years but they were only invented 35 years ago so who’s to know for sure? In the practical world, it seems CDs will last at best about five years unless stored in air-tight conditions. That’s fine for backing up data in a temporary fashion but what if you want them to last longer. You will find gold archival CDs to buy on the web which seem to offer a longer lifespan again they promise 200 to 300 years but no-one will know until 2316. Still the best way to keep data stored for hundreds of years is to write it down on paper; archivists know that last hundreds and even thousands of years. But more practically you should store your data in two or three places: the cloud, a hard drive and CDROM for example. That will help it last but will future generations be able to read CDs? We thought video would last for ever but future generations will first need to find an antique video player.

And oh, if you were thinking of printing out your life story to keep it safe think again: Printer ink is not designed to last like the ink you used at school. Try handwriting it using permanent ink.

IBRARIES are no longer just a place for books, a few minutes’ silence or perhaps an afternoon snooze. They are ‘information hubs’ with DVDs, computers and all manner of modern marvels.

And Whitehaven’s Daniel Hay Library added another string to its bow last month when it hosted a murder mystery evening.

Et Tu Shakespeare was staged by Highly Suspect Stage Company to an

audience of about 40 wannabe sleuths.

Four actors played out the mystery - a ‘lost’ Shakespeare play apparently having been discovered in the vaults but, on the eve of its public launch, the Shakespeare professor is found dead.

But who did it and why is almost inconsequential – this is just an excuse for a lot of fun.

It’s an entertaining and ingenious night’s entertainment for young and old, the actors giving their all. And the good news is that they are touring other lvenues See www.highlysuspect.co.uk

I may not be a chef, or the next star baker on GBBO, but I hold on to the fact I can make some tasty gluten free treats in the kitchen.

Whether it’s for a party, a bake sale, a dessert for Sunday lunch - or just something to snack on, on a Friday night - brownies are an easy, tasty goto option for me.

Gluten free Nutella brownies Ingredients: ● 3 eggs ● 200g of caster sugar ● 100g Plain gluten free flour

●Pre heat oven to 180°C (I set to 160°C for a fan oven) ●Grease and line with grease-proof paper, a square (or whatever shape you want) baking tray. ● Put chocolate, nutella and butter into a bowl, over boiling water, gently melt together. ●Whisk together the eggs and sugar. ●Mix all dry ingredients

together. ● Mix the eggs and sugar into the dry ingredients. ● Add the melted ingredients into the mix and stir gently. ● Pour mix into a baking tray and place in the over on the mediumheight shelf. ● Bake for 22 - 25 minutes. ● Remove and cut into squares. ● I dust with icing sugar when cooled.

“Quickly bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever” – Aristophanes Australian Tawny Port is our subject today and yes I know the EU says we cant call it Port so let’s keep my political incorrectness to ourselves.

It’s come a long way from a sweet one for the Sheila and is now one of the true delights of the fortified wine world. First of all, it stands out from traditional Portuguese Tawny Port because they mainly use French grape varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and occasionally the more robust Cabernet Sauvignon.

These are all varieties that magically transform themselves into fruit monsters when subjected to the sun of the Barossa Valley which is another reason why the end result is so rich, juicy and unique.

So, what is a Tawny Port? Most of the port we drink is Vintage or Vintage character Port which has seen several months and sometimes a couple of years in wooden barrels but is bottled early either for immediate sale and consumption.

That’s the fate of most of the production while a smaller amount is allowed to slumber in bottle for many many years before being released as vintage wines.

Tawny Port lays in wood for many years doing all its aging in barrel.

This allows for increased oxidation as well as flavour transfers between the wood and the port.

With each year in wood, the wine becomes lighter in colour form the inky black ports you probably remember on granny’s sideboard at Christmas to a lovely brick red or tawny hue.

At the same time the wood gives added sweetness in the form of vanilla to the wine making the end result rich, extremely soft and lashed with notes of figs and toffee.

Almost as rich as pudding wines but far more complex and deserving of their own identity than that grouping of often over sweet eye watering products.

Aussie Tawny partnered with a bit of old world cheese, particularly a Dutch Edam is like food porn so this Christmas, I recommend you dim the lights, put a bit of Sinatra on give your palate some serious loving, even better, share the sensual experience with your loved one for the ultimate Menage a Trois!

Gerard’s recommendation: Bethany Old Quarry Tawny Port, Australia Aromas of figs, currant cake and cocoa leading into a palate full of creamy toffee, chocolate and light seductive spices. Who needs pudding with this one!

flourishing at Calderwood CALDERWOOD House is endorsing ethical trade with new coffee sales.

Calderwood House does many activities throughout the year in order to raise vital funds.

Most are really adventurous such as the recent sleep over in the castle, the team fitness challenge or the planned Coast to Coast walk in November.

But their new venture is in ethical trade - the charity has started selling ethical trade coffee.

Ethical trade is is the assumption of responsibility of retailers, brands, and suppliers to improve the working conditions of the disadvantaged people in its supply.

The Calderwood coffee, provided in bean form to Calderwood House from Rinaldo’s in Kendal, ground up and bagged by the residents of the hostel.

This fits perfectly with Calderwood House’s ethos of helping people with a hand up rather than a hand out and encourages the residents to be part of the group.

Along with coffee the charity is selling a range of homemade cards made by Valerie Green, a friend and supporter of Calderwood House.

When asked about the cards, Valerie said that she enjoys making a range of craft things as a hobby and was happy to donate them to Calderwood to sell.

Calderwood House strives hard to help those who going through difficult times.

Windscale lose out to lucky Amateurs

Kept in the dark: The faulty lights at the Egremont Falcon Complex meant a stop-start for the match -photo by Robert Haile ON Tuesday October 11 Windscales FC hosted local side Whitehaven Amateurs in the second round of the Cumberland Cup under the floodlights of the Falcon Club pitch.

The start of the eagerly anticipated game did not go the way of the home team as a miscommunication between the Windscale defence and goalkeeper let Whitehaven in to score within the first five minutes.

As the first half progressed Windscale’s grew in confidence and started to look the more likely to score while Whitehaven made plenty of progress down the home teams left but created few chances.

With half time approaching Whitehaven’s keeper was called into dramatic action as a he flung himself to tip a Windscale shot wide and then a finger tip save after a cross evaded all

defenders to find a free Windscale player.

The second half fell into the same routine after Whitehaven had started brighter.

Pushing for an equaliser Windscale were caught on the break and Whitehaven sweeping up the pitch scored.

Making the game 0 – 2.

The floodlights then made themselves known as some had flickered all game went out several times.

In between the lights going out Windscales pushed for a goal and again a deep cross found a free player but for the Whitehaven keeper to get something on it and send the ball wide.

The lights went out for a final time to send Whitehaven Amatuers into the next round with a 0 – 2 victory.

ANOTHER early away trip to Carlisle Crusaders on Saturday September 24 supplied more drama as Egremont took to the field with 14 men.

After trailing 22 – 7 at half time Egremont came back to win 27 – 31.

The Cumbria Cup through Whitehaven and Egremont together on Saturday October 1.

Paying their second visit to Whitehaven Egremont were looking to reverse the result from the opening day however Whitehaven repeated the day with a 36 – 15 win.

The visit of inform Cockermouth to Bleach Green on Saturday October 8 was part of a double header with the Second team facing Wigton.

In a highly entertaining encounter Tarleton seemed to have the upper hand with some strong running and quick passing that had Egremont scrambling in defence.

The home team went in with a 8 – 5 lead before Tarleton fought back to 11 – 11 and missed a drop goal attempt which Egremont with the last kick of the game converted their own drop goal despite Tarleton finger tips to win 14 – 11.

Dukinfield are next in the National Cup with an away trip on December 3 but first up are away trips to St. Benedicts and Furness before Keswick visit on November 5.

Hopefully there will be fireworks to match the explosive rugby that Egremont are playing.
