All together now: Pupils and staff of past and present - including Mayor Mike Starkie and our own editor came together to celebrate and relive the memories of the good ol’ days. Pictures by Robert Haile
By Rachael Grealish PUPILS and teachers of past and present came together to celebrate the Egremont primary school reaching 50. St Bridget’s Roman Catholic Primary school celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday July 8, and hosted a colourful summer fete for all pupils and staff - past and present. Hundreds turned out for the fete celebration - including some familiar faces such as former Head Teacher, Pam Douglas, who retired last year. Both playground areas of the school were filled with stalls for games, food and even a board filled with photos supplied by past pupils and staff. The photo board was a huge hit as the photos dated back to the late 60’s and showed images of when the school was staffed by nuns.
Among the past pupils that attended was Copeland Mayor Mike Starkie. Mr Starkie attended the school between 1969 and 1975. He said: “I’m delighted to see so many people come together to celebrate. “It’s a school I attended almost 50 years ago and I met kids here that I now have life-long friendships with.” “It’s always been a fantastic school - as you can tell with so many people here with such positive and happy memories of the place.” The current St Bridget’s building opened in 1966 - but the school itself is much older. St. Bridget’s School originally started out in Rafferty Lane in 1868. It then moved to a red sandstone building, on the current site, in 1872.
The present St. Bridget’s School replaced the old sandstone one and was opened in 1966. Continues with more pictures on page 8
