By Rachael Grealish HARPS North West have been shortlisted for the Engagement, Partnerships, Innovation and Creativity (EPIC) Awards 2016. The EPIC were set up in 2010 to celebrate achievements of voluntary arts groups in the UK.

Egremont primary schools win Pupil Premium Awards 2016 ST BRIDGET’S RC Primary and Bookwell Primary Schools are two of six Cumbrian schools to win local Pupil Premium Awards 2016. The schools both received a letter from Sam Gyimah MP congratulating them on winning a local award in the KS2 category of the Pupil Premium Awards 2016. Suzanne Smith, headteacher of St Bridget’s School, said: “We are one of the most improved schools in the country in terms of attainment and

progress of our disadvantaged pupils since 2011. “This has been down to the hard work of our staff, governors, parents and particularly our pupils. We aim to give all our pupils the best start in life.” The Pupil Premium Awards recognised schools which have improved and help support disadvantaged children. Mr Hardy, Bookwell headteacher, said he was immensely proud of all his pupils and staff.

taking the next step in reaching out to harp players and encouraging the playing of this wonderful instrument.” The Newvember challenge was a month long challenge throughout November to learn an entire new piece of harp music, through daily short teaching videos and access to the sheet music each day as we learn the next section. The piece of music Harps NW used was donated by composer in residence, Karen Marshalsay. Ms Dunsford said: “Our idea was to create a month-long learning experience that harp players could do from the comfort of their own home. “We work hard as an organisation to bring harp players together, but this project also helped us to reach out to players who might not be able to meet up with others. “Our Newvember Challenge had a global reach, with people taking part from as far as America, Canada and Australia! The overwhelming response was that it created a sense of community for those taking part.” ● Vote for Harps NW by visiting: shortlist.epicawards.co.uk
