Scottsdale Recycled Water Plan approved
AT A RECENT MEETING, THE SCOTTSDALE CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE "SCOTTSDALE WATER STRATEGIC PLAN 2025-2030." This plan includes a strategy to combat drought by introducing recycled wastewater to homes by 2027. The council passed the plan without a formal presentation, highlighting the implementation of Advanced Purified Recycled Water on a system-wide basis.
Mayor David Ortega and council
members have expressed their confidence in the program, developed over several years by Brian Biesemeyer, executive director of Scottsdale Water. As Scottsdale’s allotment of Colorado River water faces reductions in 2027, the plan is crucial to maintaining a stable drinking water supply. If successful, Scottsdale will be the first city in Arizona to implement direct potable reuse on a broad scale.
The wastewater treatment facility in
North Scottsdale is prepared for this next phase, with recycled water already being stored. Another key goal is to increase the city’s well recovery capacity by 5 million gallons daily by 2029, allowing access to stored groundwater in the event of surface water shortages.
While state approval is still needed, the plan is a significant step towards integrating purified wastewater into the city’s drinking water system.
Speed Scam Alert: Fake Notice of Violation Text Messages
VALLEY AUTHORITIES HAVE RECEIVED AN INCREASE IN REPORTS OF A NEW SCAM TARGETING AREA RESIDENTS. The scam involves fraudulent “Notice of Violation” text messages which claim that a “speed monitoring camera” has captured you speeding and demanding immediate action. The text further instructs you to click a link and make immediate payment to avoid having to appear in court. Currently, the message appears to be coming from the City of Phoenix. HOW THE SCAM WORKS Fake Violation Message: Scammers send out mass text messages, pretending to be from legitimate authorities such as the City of Phoenix or other municipal bodies. These messages inform recipients that they have been caught speeding by
a camera, often in school or construction zones where fines can be higher, making the claim that much more alarming.
Urgent Payment Demand: The message creates a sense of urgency by stating that failure to pay immediately will result in court action. This tactic is designed to panic recipients into acting quickly and without taking time to verify the claim.
Fraudulent Link: The message includes a link that directs the receiver to a fake website, which looks legitimate and mimics an official city or court page. Once on the site, recipients are prompted to provide personal details, such as name, address, driver’s license number and payment information.
Stealing Your Information: Once the scammers have received this information,
they are able to use it to steal identities, commit fraud, or access personal financial accounts. The payment details entered are compromised and the scammers begin using it for as many unauthorized transactions as they will be able to get away with.
WHAT TO BE AWARE OF:
• Municipal Court, or any legitimate court, will never request or accept payment via text message or email.
• Legitimate requests by any government agency can be verified. No requesting agency will force you to do anything without first being able to confirm the claim. Verify the source of such messages by directly contacting the agency in question.
• Never click on links in unsolicited
messages. These can lead to phishing websites designed to steal sensitive information.
HOW TO STAY PROTECTED:
• Do not click on any links in suspicious messages.
• Do not provide any personal or payment information requested through unsolicited texts or emails.
• Delete the text or email and do not respond or engage in any way.
If you or someone you know has received a suspicious text, email, phone call or inperson visit, before agreeing to anything, contact the main line for the agency or company that is in question and ask for assistance.

Billie and Lulu’s: A New Plus-Size Clothing Resale Store Opening in North Phoenix
NORTH PHOENIX IS ABOUT TO GET A LOT MORE FASHIONABLE WITH THE OPENING OF BILLIE AND LULU’S, A PLUS-SIZE CLOTHING STORE SET TO OPEN MIDOCTOBER. Owned by longtime friends and business partners Natasha Beal and Heidi Koffman, Billie and Lulu’s will be the first store in the area fully dedicated to providing stylish and affordable clothing for women sizes large to 4X+.
The idea for Billie and Lulu’s was born from the success of a special section at their first store, Discover Mercantile, a popular thrift collective known for its eclectic mix of clothing and accessories, home decor and one-of-a-kind Arizona made items. Heidi, being plus-size herself, found that thrifting was often a frustrating experience due to the limited selection.
“I’ve always struggled with finding pieces that fit and made me feel good,” says Heidi. “Most plus-size sections are small and often lacking in style. I wanted to create a space where plussize women could finally feel included and find fashionable pieces that make them feel confident.”
After creating a dedicated plus-size room at Discover Mercantile, the response from the community was overwhelming. Women expressed excitement, many saying they felt "seen" for the first time. When a retail space became available in a shopping center that they both love, it was a moment of pure serendipity. The duo knew it was time to expand their vision – and Billie and Lulu’s was born.
Billie and Lulu’s will offer a wide range of styles, from vintage to modern. Shoppers can expect to find pieces that have been specially curated secondhand, are new with tags, and even custom handmade. "We focus on quality and affordability," says Natasha. “We want every woman, no matter her size, to feel confident and stylish while knowing she got a great deal."
Billie and Lulu’s will also be home to Discover Mercantile Too, a large room of local vendors carrying everything from vintage clothing and antiques to handmade candles and soaps.
More than just a clothing store, Billie and Lulu’s aims to build a community of women who want to wear fashionable plus-size clothing that is often lacking in traditional retail.
“We are passionate about helping women feel included and empowered,” adds Heidi. “It’s not just about selling clothes; it’s about creating a space where women can connect, share experiences, and feel supported.”
Billie and Lulu’s plans to have a soft opening mid-October with a grand opening scheduled in November. Stay tuned for more!

Holland Community Center Presents
THE HOLLAND COMMUNITY CENTER IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT ITS POPULAR GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH FUNDRAISER WILL RETURN OVER THE WEEKEND OF OCT. 25-27. Now in its fifth year, this festive event will showcase hundreds of one-of-akind, hand-blown glass pumpkins crafted by Greg Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his vibrant, intricate designs. These whimsical works of art will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Center’s efforts as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing arts, education and community in the Desert Foothills region. The event will take place at the Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th St. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood, when road trips with his family would often include visits to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, Tomb explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. He occasionally rented glass studio time over the years and began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for world-renowned glass maker Simon Pearce. In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival and the Scottsdale Artfest. His colorful creations have also been featured in numerous museums and magazines.
In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flame-worked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Additionally, he shares his passion and talent for glass art with others by leading classes across the country, from the Bay Area Glass Institute in San Jose, Calif. to the town of Johnsburg, NY, where he is proud to serve as artist-in-residence. He is also currently operating Arizona Glassblowing Studio as the artist-in-residence of the Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak. With this year’s Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser, Tomb is eager to once again celebrate the beauty and joy of glass art with the Desert Foothills community.
The Holland Community Center is a unique
partnership dedicated to promoting arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need and encouraging lifelong learning. Previously known as the Foothills Community Foundation, the Holland Community Center provides a diverse array of programs, including classes, fine art exhibits and performing arts events. As a nonprofit organization, the Center does not receive any funding from government entities and is proud to rely exclusively on the generosity of donors.

DrivingMBA…Teaching Teens Safe Driving for Over 20 Years!
When you talk to Maria and Richard Wojtczak today, their passion is as evident as it was when they set out on this venture in 2003. Why? Because for them, one teen life lost to an avoidable car crash is too many. “When we researched what was being done in driver training, we were shocked at the lack of professional training and education required to attain an Arizona driver’s license.” said Wojtczak.
“Since opening, our singular mission has been to provide teen drivers with the training and tools necessary to become competent, responsible and safe solo drivers,” said Maria
Wojtczak, Chief Operating Officer at DrivingMBA. “Our system is unlike any other driving program available in Arizona and the whole country.”
DrivingMBA, with locations in Glendale and Scottsdale, is the only driving school in Arizona that offers a comprehensive program using a combination of simulation labs and on-road instruction to teach driving fundamentals and defensive driving skills to teens, and other drivers, across the state.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 3,000 people are killed each year in car crashes involving a teen driver (aged 15-18 years old.) Driving is the single deadliest thing teenagers do every day.
Arizona's high rate of red-light runners, road rage incidents and wrong-way drivers compounds the complexity of educating inexperienced drivers. DrivingMBA mitigates these dangers
through its in-depth training for teens that highlights skills needed to avoid these and other issues like distracted driving.
“Our goal was to develop a program that would ensure novice drivers were prepared for the many situations that come up daily when driving,” Wojtczak added. “Driving has changed over the last 20 years, vehicles are faster, roadways are more aggressive, and the level of distraction today is significantly higher with all of the technology available in cars, cell phones, and, of course, social media.”
DrivingMBA trains over 1,200 students each year in a variety of programs, including classes for adults, seniors, exceptional learners and fleet drivers. The most popular program, the DRIVE Certification Training Package is a 30-hour course that is one of the most thorough teen training programs in the nation. Spread out over six months or more, it takes participants from permit
to official license and includes 14 hours of driving in simulation labs, both Driving Fundamentals and Defensive Driving, and a minimum of 10 hours of on-road training.
Additionally, DrivingMBA incorporates elements of partnering with parents of teens who play a key role in the total learning process. There’s a Coaching Course hosted by Wojtczak via Zoom to help prepare parents for the journey to getting their teen behind the wheel. It is all part of DrivingMBA's effort to provide all drivers with the advanced training they need to return home safely every day.
Visit our open house at either location during National Teen Driver Safety Week on Oct. 23 from 5-7 p.m.! Scottsdale Location: 17787 N. Perimeter Dr. A-115; Glendale Location: Il Palazzo at Arrowhead Ranch, 5940 W. Union Hills Dr. Visit DrivingMBA.com or call 480-948-1648 to learn more.

Estate Planning Options for Pet Parents
The Law Office of Libby Banks and the Arizona Humane Society team up to raise awareness on the importance of planning for pets.
When Allison Gloss, an attorney at The Law Office of Libby Banks, had a client ask about how to make sure her cats would be taken care of when she was no longer able to do so, she began to reach out to local organizations to see if such programs existed.
She knew that the client liked to donate to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), so she gave them a call. In a moment of serendipity, she found that AHS has a Continuing Care Program for its Legacy Circle members where, if their owners predecease them, they are placed with loving families who have been carefully selected by AHS staff.
“A lot of pet parents – especially those who are older – are concerned about what will happen to their beloved pets when they pass,” explains Vanessa Martin, planned giving manager for AHS. “The Continuing Care Program offers peace of mind to our donors.”
Martin shares that the innovative program is for those who include AHS in their estate plans. She adds that planned giving counts for one third of AHS’ total revenue.
“Other organizations have similar programs, but they often have a specific gift amount,” she says. “At AHS, you can give $500 or $5 million, and we will take the same quality care of your precious pet.”
Another way this program is helpful is that it allows seniors the peace of mind to adopt pets later in life and know that they will be taken care of when it’s time.
THE IMPORTANCE OF INCLUDING PETS IN ESTATE PLANNING
Libby Banks, estate planning attorney and the owner of The Law Office of Libby Banks, says that, in addition to considering options like the Continuing Care Program, there are ways that pet parents can make sure their fur babies are taken care of when they are unable to do so.
“Just like you would create a trust and pick a guardian for your minor children, it’s similar for pets as well,” Banks explains. “One way is a pet trust where money is set aside, and a guardian chosen for the remainder of a pet’s life. If there is money left after the pet passes, it can be donated to a charity like AHS or another that was close to the pet parent’s heart.”
Oftentimes more common than a pet trust is a pet provision, where you add in your wishes for your pet within your estate planning documents.
“Whatever you decide to do to provide for your pets, it is important to put it in writing if you want it to be binding,” Banks explains. “Having a plan in place for your assets, for your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind.”
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS
One might not think that an animal rescue and an estate attorney’s office have anything in common, but both AHS and The Law Office of Libby Banks are in support of teaming up to make sure that the public is aware of the importance of including pets in estate planning.
“Partnerships like this are so important,” Martin says. “Our partners come from a wide selection of industries, and they support us in a variety of meaningful ways.”
“Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t have someone who will take their pets when they pass or are no longer able to take care of them,” Banks says. “Letting our clients know about programs like AHS’ Continuing Care Program is perfect because a lot of our clients are charity minded.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING
Even if someone isn’t a pet parent, Banks says that no one can overlook the power and necessity of estate planning.
“Big or small, most adults have an estate of some sort,” Banks says. “If you don’t plan for it, don’t worry,
the state has a plan for you; it just may not be what you want. While a large portion of estate planning is determining how your estate will be distributed at death, a good estate planner is doing much more. The estate planning professional should assure that you have the right things in place in case you become incapacitated. This provides you with peace of mind for protecting your people and pets.”

Big Changes in Realtor Commissions; How It Affects Scottsdale North
By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker
You may have heard about some major changes that came from the National Association of Realtors (NAR). They recently settled a few big lawsuits accusing them of keeping real estate commissions high. To wrap it up, NAR agreed to pay $418 million over the next four years, which gets them out from under claims by over a million members and smaller brokerages.
Now, the NAR hasn’t admitted to doing anything wrong, but they’re making some important changes to how things have been done for years. These changes came into effect on Aug. 17, so let’s break down what this means for you—whether you’re buying or selling a home in Scottsdale North.
HOW AGENTS GET PAID
Here’s the lowdown on how real estate agents earn their commissions. When you sell your house with an agent, their earnings usually come from a commission or concession, which is often a percentage of the sale price. This is agreed upon when you first list your
home. In the past, listing your home on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS)—the biggest marketplace for homes—meant you also had to offer a commission or concession for the buyer’s agent and advertise that amount on the MLS.
One of the big changes is the “decoupling” of broker commissions. The revision requires offers of compensation to the buyer’s agent to originate from the seller, not the listing agent, even if it’s on the seller’s behalf. Said differently, the seller’s agent no longer needs to offer a concession to the buyer’s agent, AND they are prohibited from advertising that amount of that concession in the MLS.
Following the NAR commission decoupling, the key change is that buyers and sellers will now separately negotiate commissions with their respective agents. This means sellers are no longer required to pay the buyer’s agent commission directly. This leads to more flexibility in how commissions are split between buyer and seller sides, potentially resulting in lower overall costs for homebuyers and sellers.
THE EFFECTS OF THE NEW RULES SO FAR
Since the new rules went into effect, most sellers are still offering concessions to the buyer’s agent because the MLS remains the main place buyers (and their agents) look for homes. Remember, the MLS is still by far the most powerful tool for advertising your home. It’s where nearly all serious buyers—and their agents—start their search. If your home isn’t listed on the MLS, you’re missing out on the biggest audience of potential buyers. And more eyes on your home means a better chance of finding the right buyer who’s willing to pay top dollar.
THE NEW RULES
The NAR’s new policies aim to create more transparency and fairness. Some key changes include:
• Buyer agent compensation MAY NOT be listed in MLS home listings.
• Brokers are freed from having to subscribe to specific listing services (such as MLS).
• Buyers’ brokers MUST now have written agreements in place with their clients BEFORE showing them any homes.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR SCOTTSDALE NORTH HOMEBUYERS AND SELLERS?
For many of you in Scottsdale North, where buyers tend to be older, more experienced, and financially secure, these changes might not have a huge impact. (After all, we have the highest percentage of Baby Boomers in the U.S.) The biggest shift is that as a buyer, you now MUST have a written agreement with an agent if you plan to use one BEFORE you see a home. That is very different from the past.
Basically, it’s all about making sure the real estate game is more fair and transparent for everyone, including folks like you who are looking to move to the next chapter in your lives. Plus, since the intent of the NAR agreement was to bring down commission rates by promoting fair competition, you might end up saving some cash in the long run.

When Life Changes, Your Estate Plan Might Change Too
By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
Change is inevitable. With estate planning, you put in place the best plan you can at the time. However, as your life proceeds, and the law twists and turns, your plan may need an update. So when should you review –and possibly renew – your estate plan?
One change that can make a difference in your plan isn’t even something you might know about. Federal or state law may change, and your plan might need to be adjusted to address the new laws.
to adjust his plan, and didn’t change his life insurance or IRA beneficiaries.
Downsizing Downsizing Painlessly Painlessly
For example, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, changing the former trust law completely. If your Trust was put in place before 2008, you need a review, because the law on which it was based is now very different.
The federal estate tax exemption has changed over the years as well. The exemption (what you can give away in life and at death without taxes) has been as low as $600,0000, but is now over $13 Million (but goes down to $6 to $7 Million in 2026). If your estate plan was done when the exemption was low, your plan may be far more complex than you need now. A simpler plan may make it easier for your surviving spouse and children. If your estate plan was done when your net worth was much less, you may need to think about planning for estate tax avoidance.
THE BIG FOUR OF LIFE EVENTS –MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, BIRTH AND DEATH
It seems obvious that if you get married or divorced, you need to change your plan. When you leave a marriage, leave the old estate plan and replace it with a new plan. On marrying, don’t forget to change the plan you did before marriage. I’ve also had to console the spouse who finds out too late that her husband failed
The birth of a child is also an occasion to change your plan or put one in place if you haven’t done so yet. You need to protect that life you brought into the world. Protection includes making sure things are in place for their care if you are no longer here.
MOVING FROM STATE TO STATE
Another significant life event is a move to another state. While your attorney in your old state may have done a fine job, it is important to be sure that your new home state doesn’t have laws that affect your plan adversely. A local attorney can advise you about whether your existing plan requires changes.
A REVIEW EVERY THREE TO FIVE YEARS
I recommend that my clients review their trusts with me every three to five years. That way, we can discuss any changes in their lives and in the law and update to be sure the plan is what is needed.
If I can help you, let me know! You can find my contact information at www. Libbybanks.com or call the office at 602375-6752.

Stress Management: A Naturopathic Approach
By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
How high is your stress level? How do you manage your stress? These are two of the most important questions that I ask my patients. Stress affects us in so many ways and when poorly managed, it can negatively impact our health, causing and aggravating chronic health conditions.
Not all stress is bad and in certain situations it is a survival mechanism that increases our awareness and circulation to flee from potential danger. However, long term stress can deplete our body, increase inflammation and lead to chronic health issues. Although removing ALL potential stress triggers in life may not be attainable, we can manage it with naturopathic support and lifestyle changes to ensure optimal health. Here are some helpful tips.
DIET: Anti-inflammatory diets can be very helpful for managing stress. If we eat foods that naturally decrease inflam-
mation, we will have less physical stress on our body. This helps prevent chronic health conditions, ensure proper digestion and support our body for better stress management. Foods such as sugar, wheat, and dairy as well as any other food sensitivities can potentially increase inflammation and should be avoided.
ADRENAL SUPPORT: Your adrenal glands produce a hormone called cortisol in response to stress. These levels can rise initially with stress, however, from long term or chronic stress they become exhausted and may be lowered. Levels can be checked by your health care provider and proper support depending on your individual needs can be implemented. Anything that you do to decrease stress levels will help support the adrenal glands. Naturopathic physicians can use treatments with herbal remedies, supplements and diet to ensure proper adrenal health.
SLEEP: Sleep is crucial for stress management, but it is often the first
thing sacrificed when we are stressed out. In addition, chronic stress can disrupt sleep so it can feel like a neverending cycle. Good sleep hygiene such as eliminating electronics a minimum of 30 minutes before bed, meditating or adding in relaxing yoga are just a few ideas to ensure restful sleep.
GET REGULAR EXERCISE:
Physical activity will release endorphins which are chemicals that help decrease inflammation, support restful sleep and decrease stress. Daily exercise/movement plays an important role in stress management in addition to many other health benefits.
LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT:
Treating the root cause is one of the main principles of Naturopathic Medicine. When it comes to stress management this is also true. We must identify potential stressors and eliminate what we can. In addition, support such as counseling or therapy for stress management can be beneficial. We may find it helpful to make priorities and
goals, set healthy boundaries, not take on too much and say no if needed. We want to focus on positivity in our lives and surround ourselves with healthy, nurturing relationships.
UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS:
Stress can cause underlying health conditions and underlying health conditions can cause stress. These conditions may include autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular conditions, gastrointestinal disorders and hormone imbalances. A Naturopathic physician can help you identify those underlying health conditions and give you proper integrative support to decrease inflammation and restore optimal health.
Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.
Why Your Shoulder Hurts At Night (and How to Finally Get Relief)
By Shoulder Pain Expert, Dr. Matthew Hernandez, Ethos Integrative Medicine
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
You’ve seen everyone for shoulder pain, and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…
When you’re experiencing shoulder pain all day, it’s no surprise that you would turn to sleep for relief. But when sleeping seated in a chair becomes as bad as lying on your side, it’s time to solve the mystery of your shoulder pain.
Unfortunately, for many on the quest to conquering discomfort, their only option from healthcare providers is to
“wait until it gets worse.” Here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can actually get relief now.
SHOULDER PAIN WHILE SLEEPING
Irene, who had been dealing with shoulder pain for six months, came to us for this exact reason. She didn’t want to resort to temporary cortisone injections, daily sleeping pills, or pain medication. She wanted a long-term solution.
“The worst part was not being able to sleep at night.” Despite three months of physical therapy, her improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also diagnosed her with a rotator cuff injury, but told her she needed to wait for it to get worse to consider surgery.
GETTING RELIEF AND FINALLY SOME SLEEP

So You Think You Have Some Hearing Loss—What’s The Big Deal?
Dr. Kristen Clark, AUD, Board Certified Audiologist
Everyday in our office we hear patients ask “what’s the big deal?” about having some hearing loss. They tell us “I hear well enough”...whatever that means. The truth is that hearing loss is a hidden disability that affects really every aspect of a person's life. It impacts everything from quality of life, overall health and

Hearing loss is the third leading chronic health condition in the U.S. It is estimated that approximately 48 million people in the U.S. suffer with hearing loss currently and on average wait 7 to 10 years before they seek any treatment.
What does it matter if I live with hearing loss? Can’t I just turn up the TV? The big deal about living with a hearing loss, even a mild one, is that creates stressors on an individual. It raises anxiety level, increases negative emotions, creates social isolation, depression, loneliness and causes increased fatigue. Social isolation, depression and loneliness have shown to be as detrimental to your overall health as smoking half a pack of cigarettes per day.
Other areas of impact of an untreated hearing loss include greater fall risk, higher incidence of tinnitus, vertigo and balance issues, and increased risk of other health conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular

issues. But the biggest deal about having some hearing loss is your brain. Yes, your brain.
The association between hearing loss and dementia has received particular attention within the past decade and was identified as the largest single potentially modifiable risk factor for the development of dementia in both the 2017 and 2020 Lancet Commission reports. Research is showing that there is not only loss of some fine structural components in the inner ear from hearing loss, but also loss of blood circulation and neural functionality in the higher brain regions that process hearing and speech information and their correlating regions of the brain for memory.
So hearing loss is a big deal. Hearing assessments are recommended for all individuals over the age of 50 and sooner if you are noticing some problems or tinnitus. It is a big deal because your hearing matters.

We get it. Sometimes life goes speeding by so fast it seems like there’s hardly time to breathe. Little things get shoved to the side, until one day they become too big to ignore. With hearing loss, conversations get harder, particularly in crowded places. Your TV gets turned up louder and louder. And the sweet sounds of the natural world seem to faded away.
CAN HELP. At Platinum Hearing, we specialize in finding the perfect hearing solutions for people just like you.

IN THEATERS
“Strange Darling”
The final attack of one of the 21st century’s most prolific serial killers reenacted in great detail.
“Strange Darling” is the perfect example of homage without being derivative, even if it does get a little self indulgent at times. Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner are astonishing here as two multilayered individuals who continuously surprise you with their actions. It’s a gorgeous film that harkens back to the mood of low budget cinema of the 70s but still has its own identity with the camerawork and editing. There are some aspects of the film that could be cut to make the film’s plot more surprising, but it still feels like a natural progression. Most impressively, it makes the most of its resources without feeling showy, which is an issue with a lot of “homage cinema.”
“Blink Twice”
A vacation to a billionaire’s island becomes a nightmare for a group of women.
It’s an ambitious debut for director Zoë Kravitz, one that doesn’t pull any punches. At the same time, there’s a sense that some of the decisions hold the film back from its full potential. Perhaps some of the choices, such as the over reliance of glamorous, but empty, imagery and repetitive storytelling, is the point; but there are better ways to execute those ideas. And without spoiling, the ending seems to throw out the ideas of abuse of power in favor of a more audience-friendly idea. It’s a movie that one has to respect for its goals and what it does, but it also has many elements that are clearly the result of a first-timer. It will be interesting to see where Kravitz goes from here.
“Alien: Romulus”
In a bid to escape their current lives, a group of young people inadvertently unleash the universe’s greatest terror.
“Alien: Romulus” is frustrating at times because it’s a generally good, at times great, movie that’s held back by an adherence to the past of the series. When it focuses on its own identity, it’s a gripping tale of young people repeating the mistakes of their previous generations to escape the cycle they’ve been forced into. That’s combined with themes of siblinghood and some new set pieces which takes the creatures of the series to a new sense of scale. Unfortunately, the amount of homages to previous films and the desire to feel familiar at the same time holds the film back, whether it’s lines from prior installments or an unfortunate case of CGI dead people. It’s unnecessary, not doing anything for the film or it’s themes, rather detracting from it. And it’s a shame because it is so close
to greatness. This is a well made and entertaining film with a very good cast of newer talent...it just had to be more confident in itself.
ON NETFLIX
“Rebel Ridge”
A former marine finds himself against a small town’s police force following the theft of his bail money.
Jeremy Saulnier returns with a bang in “Rebel Ridge”, a surprising thriller in terms of its approach. Specifically, through how it approaches action, in a violent but not fatal manner which parallels its social commentary. For our lead Terry, played excellently by Aaron Pierre, it’s a world he has to bring down in a manner that is playing fair when it shouldn’t be. Backed by a supporting cast and an excellent use of slow burning tension, it’s the best Netflix original film in a long time. It’s good to know films like this are still being made in the action genre.

Free Community Event! Why You Still Have Sciatica & Back Pain
(And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.
This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you
pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What to Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino Dive into Fun
Along the banks of the Colorado River and nestled between surrounding majestic mountains, emerges the picturesque destination named for gaming pioneer Don Laughlin. Founded in 1966, Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, is the town’s first and only family-owned and operated resort. This is Nevada style gaming in a small town atmosphere.
“My grandfather, Don Laughlin, enjoys having a variety of gaming and activities as he doesn’t like to see anyone left out of fun,” said Matt Laughlin, Don Laughlin’s grandson and the Riverside Resort CEO. “If you are interested in table games, we have blackjack, craps, roulette, Three Card Poker, Deuces Wild, Ultimate Texas Hold ’em, Let it Ride, Mississippi Stud, Face up Pai Gow and more.”
For slot lovers, there are many variations of Buffalo machines, wheel of fortune, lightning links, Blazing 7’s, plus video poker and four card keno. Be sure not to forget the famous Riverside Poker Room and Bingo Paradise. For those not feeling competitive on the casino floor, there is a 34-lane bowling center, 6-plex movie theater, salon and day spa, USS Riverside boat tour, classic car collection, Don’s Celebrity Theatre indoor showroom, plus two beautiful pools overlooking the river including their south tower adult pool and bar. “We have something for everyone here,” Laughlin said.
Although gaming is one of the biggest draws for many guests, it’s only one of many activities during a stay at the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino. Cool off in the water at the South Tower adults-only pool and bar, overlooking the scenic Colorado River. For visitors with children, check out the north tower family-friendly pool.
Looking for another way to spend some time outdoors? Set sail on the USS Riverside, the resort’s cruise boat that takes guests under the Laughlin Bridge up to the Davis Dam. Guests can feel the wind on the shaded outdoor upper deck or check out the views from the climatecontrolled lower deck. Listen to the narrated history of the Colorado River while cruising during sunset. For those more comfortable in the cool air conditioned indoors, there are plenty of entertainment options to choose from.
Pick up a ball and try a game of bowling at the Riverside Lanes Bowling Center. For fun-for-the-whole-family, check
out the resort’s Laser Tag Center. Kids and adults alike will get their heart rate up and have a great time trying to score points for their team.
Don’s Celebrity Theatre never disappoints with weekly entertainment. From the Oak Ridge Boys to Crystal Gayle to Queen Nation and other amazing acts, there is a show for everyone.
The resort has a 6-plex movie theater with brand new motorized, plush recliners and attached swivel tables. Guests can watch first-run movies with full bar service and an extensive food and beverage menu.
The resort’s Jean Jeffrey Salon and Day Spa is for guests who want to be pampered. Get facials, massages, body wraps, scrubs, manicures, pedicures, haircuts and more.
To recharge after a fun-filled day, check out any of the Resort’s nine restaurants and snack bars. Indulge in French, Italian, or steakhouse cuisine at the famous upscale Gourmet Room & Lounge. Experience incredible views and slow-cooked prime rib at the Prime Rib Room on the River. Craving a buffet? Enjoy the Riverside Resort’s Brunch and Dinner buffet with incredible views of the Colorado River and Black Mountains. For more casual fare, drop into the Riverview Restaurant open from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Casa Serrano Restaurant and Cantina, or try the deli-style Sidewalk Cafe.
“Having several dining options is also something we are proud of,” said Laughlin. “The Gourmet Room has been a staple here for over 30 years. It’s an incredible place to dine if you haven’t yet had the pleasure. The Prime Rib Room on the River says it all. Prime rib and Laughlin go hand in hand and it’s an amazing restaurant with amazing views.
