Arabian National Breeder Finals Returns to Scottsdale

Unique, complimentary event to showcase the world’s top Arabian horses.

THE ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED RETURN OF THE ARABIAN NATIONAL BREEDER FINALS AT THE EQUIDOME OF WESTWORLD IN SCOTTSDALE. SCHEDULED FROM WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13 TO SATURDAY, SEPT. 16, THIS PREMIER EVENT PROMISES TO SPOTLIGHT THE PINNACLE OF ARABIAN HORSE BREEDING IN AN UNPARALLELED SETTING.

“We eagerly anticipate the 2023 Arabian National Breeder Finals and warmly welcome the international Arabian community and enthusiasts,” says Melissa Schalles, executive director of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona. “This boutique-style horse event encompasses both breeding and performance competitions. It’s an excellent spectacle for those unfamiliar with Arabian horses, ensuring entertainment for both longtime aficionados and newcomers to the equine world.”

Conceived from an enduring passion for the Arabian horse, the Arabian National Breeder Finals provides a thrilling platform for these majestic animals to compete. This year’s event will emphasize an elite halter/breeding showcase, promising prize money, prestige, and unparalleled opportunities for breeders and Arabian horse lovers. With up to 300 horses vying for the top spot, this competition stands out as the equine equivalent of the Westminster dog show.

The finals encompass diverse performances or “classes.” Participants include some of the world’s best Arabian and halter horses, competing for over $85,000 in prize money and the much-coveted title of “Finals Champion.”

Schalles adds, “The array of classes this year is particularly exciting. The Liberty Class showcases horses running free, riderless in the arena. The Weanlings Class spotlights horses aged between 3 to 6 months. And, of course, the Performance and Arabian Native Costume Classes never fail to captivate the audience.”

Beneficiaries of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona’s charitable endeavors include the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund, Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge, Hoofbeatz USA, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, March of Dimes, Scottsdale Community College Equine Science program, and Youth for Troops, among others.

The event will also feature exhibitors presenting jewelry, clothing, equestrian art, and a variety of food and beverages. The Arabian National Breeder Finals takes place at the Equidome at WestWorld, located at 16601 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale. Entry is complimentary. For more details, visit scottsdaleshow.com.

Mountainside Fitness to Transform Former Albertsons Space into State-of-the-Art Facility in North Scottsdale

Photos courtesy of Mountainside Fitness

AS ARIZONA’S LARGEST LOCALLY OWNED FITNESS CENTER, MOUNTAINSIDE FITNESS IS POISED FOR ANOTHER EXPANSION, AND THE STREETS OF NORTH SCOTTSDALE ARE BUZZING WITH ANTICIPATION.

Mountainside Fitness recently announced ambitious plans to renovate a once bustling Albertsons grocery store into its 21st elite fitness location.

Situated just east of the 101 freeway at Scottsdale Towne Center, the chosen location boasts a sprawling 50,320-square-foot space at 15660 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. The fitness center will offer an extensive range of amenities including three separate group fitness studios, a tiered cardio platform, and an expansive strength floor with an outdoor workout

space. Patrons can also look forward to basketball and pickleball courts, a dedicated childcare area, and well-equipped locker rooms complete with saunas and steam rooms.

Drawing inspiration from its Paradise Valley counterpart that launched in 2020, the new location will also house the M Café amongst other facilities.

The prime location, which remained unoccupied since the departure of Albertsons, has long awaited revitalization. Craig Cote, Mountainside Fitness CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the project. “This is a tremendous area with high-density housing, making it a stellar location for our members,” notes Cote. He adds, “Its proximity to the freeway and surrounding amenities and shops is unmatched. We are elated about introducing our 21st Mountainside Fitness to

Scottsdale Towne Center and are confident it will serve the local community commendably for years ahead.”

The successful deal was orchestrated by Commercial Real Estate Brokers Regan Amato and Ryan Tanner of JLL, representing Mountainside Fitness. On the other end, brokers Ryan Desmond and Neil Board from Western Retail Advisors championed the interests of the landlord.

Prospective fitness enthusiasts are looking at a wait, as construction is slated to span approximately eight months. Mountainside Fitness aims to cut the ribbon on this new establishment by mid-2024. To mark the occasion, they will roll out exclusive member specials. For more information, visit mountainsidefitness.com.

Community College students change the lives of people with dementia

AMesa Community College foreign exchange student discovered the perfect way to feel at home in a new city. Buhari Abdulai signed up for the College Partners Program offered by Hospice of the Valley. The innovative program matches college students with older adults living with dementia.

“I found the vision of hospice so intriguing, and I wanted to be part of a great team that provides beautiful care to people living with dementia. There is nothing like that in my country,” the 24-year-old Ghana native says.

For the next seven months, Buhari offered socialization and companionship to 80-year-old Bill Harris and his family.

“Buhari became a part of our extended family,” says Bill’s wife, Myra. “For two semesters, he faithfully visited on a weekly

basis and his visits were eagerly anticipated by all of us. Buhari brought laughter and joy into our home. He conversed with my husband, sampled new foods with us and even allowed my grandson David to introduce him to red licorice. He played games with our grandson and graciously joined us for David’s sixth birthday party — it just made his day!”

Buhari and other College Partners volunteers say they are grateful for the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. They are exposed to hands-on, real-life, careerdefining experiences that have a lasting impact.

Arya Yadav says volunteering taught her how to appreciate the small things in life that we often miss and celebrate “the joy of living in the moment and relishing it as a sweet memory later.”

Danielle Cooper utilized the magic of music to make meaningful connections with her person with dementia. “She

loved ‘70s music and was able to sing every word of every song!”

Mariah Meza Perez was paired with a former nurse practitioner who shares “brave, wild, and inspiring” stories from her career — and inspired her to pursue the same profession. One of her fondest memories was taking strolls together and sharing their gratitude for each other at the end of every visit.

Hospice of the Valley and its Supportive Care for Dementia program launched this unique student volunteer program in 2021 with a grant from the national Community Care Corps. The goal is to enhance quality of life for people living with early and moderate stages of dementia, and also to reduce caregiver burden.

In exchange for their generous gift of time, students receive incentives like scholarship opportunities, monthly education with dementia experts, and a Dementia Training Certificate.

“The knowledge I’ve gained has sparked a passion inside me as a future healthcare provider,” says Ali Kindred. As a College Partners volunteer, she provided companionship by watching westerns and making milkshakes, allowing a family member to take a much-needed break from caregiving.

Now that Buhari is back in Ghana, he is determined to advocate for people living with dementia. “After learning about the complexities of this disease, I realize there may be people who have been misdiagnosed as mentally ill. I plan to educate families in my community to seek medical care and obtain accurate diagnoses. People living with dementia are not mentally ill, but they do require optimal care, love, and support.”

To apply for the College Partners Program, contact Holly Cottor at hcottor@hov. org or call 602-515-6207. To learn more, visit hov.org/volunteer/college-partnersprogram.

Kids’ Corner

This is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.

SUPPLIES

• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper

• 2 rubber bands

• 1 pencil

• 1 pair of scissors

• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)

CHALLENGE

• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate

• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle

• Cut the circle out from the paper plate

• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle

• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color

• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle

• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands

• Spin the top

ASK YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS

What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?

Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?

Evolving Medicine: Arizona Natural Concepts Pioneers Effective Use of Cannabis for Health and Wellness

Photos courtesy of Arizona Natural Concepts

Long gone are the days of reefer madness, but with time comes progress and the medicinal benefits of cannabis are becoming more undeniable. Moreover, medical research is beginning to back up years of anecdotal evidence.

Arizona Natural Concepts (ANC), located at 1039 E. Carefree Highway, has a heavy focus on the medical patients within the community. Patients can expect a knowledgeable staff willing to help them find products to suit their specific needs.

A caring and compassionate approach is of the upmost priority for the staff at ANC. They take steps to ensure their team is always up to date on the latest research and products on the market.

One of the most exciting things they share with patients is the presence of the endocannabinoid system in all mammals. The ECS is responsible for interacting with the cannabinoids found in the plant to create homeostasis within the body.

ECS has been found to be a potent regulator of brain activity, hormonal function, and immune response. Endocannabinoids are at play as we deal

with stress, hunger, sleep, illness, and emotions. This could be the answer to as to why cannabis is seen as a cure all by so many of its proponents. The body’s ability to use and breakdown these compounds naturally is shedding much needed light on how to use cannabis effectively for a variety of issues.

A deficiency in the ECS is thought by some researchers to be a key component in the diseases seen on a massive level, many of which do not respond to pharmaceutical treatments. Understanding how the ECS works is central to assisting patients as they navigate these new waters.

ANC is home to three brands all centered around creating products that are not only medicinally beneficial, but palatable to the senses. Each brand sources top tier material for the products they create, always keeping the medicinal value in mind.

A common ailment amongst so many patients is their inability to get a restful night’s sleep. ANC’s home brands offer an array of products focused on helping patients finally get some well-deserved rest.

Yummy Gummy is a gelatin based gummy low in sugar with flavor profiles that change seasonally. They come in doses for those who are new to cannabis, and those who may need something a bit stronger. Yummy Gummy is fully infused, allowing patients to cut them into desired doses for those who are looking to microdose.

Yummy Gummy produces limited edition runs based on the needs of the patient. For instance, the team is producing a nighttime gummy infused with CBN and melatonin. CBN is the cannabinoid that aids mainly in sleep but is also helpful in regulating the immune system.

These gummies are fairly priced, and ANC consistently runs deals. Keep an eye out for Yummy Gummy brand reps who may be on site offering up some swag with each purchase.

ANC is also home to Tipsy Turtle, a snack focused edible brand which is friendly to those with specific dietary needs. Tipsy Turtle edibles are also available in a variety of doses, allowing patients to microdose if they choose. They also offer high dosed edibles for those who have a higher tolerance and need a bit more of a heavy hitter.

Tipsy Turtle edibles offer patients the unique ability to incorporate their medicine into their daily meals whether they be sweet or savory.

These edibles are delicious enough to nosh on every day, yet affordable enough

to do it with no guilt. Keep an eye out on ANC who will consistently run deals on these amazing snacks. Be sure to look for the Tipsy Turtle brand reps who are sometimes on site with freshly baked non-med confections. They will also have swag for those who make a Tipsy Turtle purchase.

ANC also houses Achieve, their concentrate brand with a wide selection of wax for every consumer. Achieve produces Rick Simpson Oil, a potent concentrate many refer to as “the medicine” of the cannabis world. RSO can be used topically or orally.

Research has shown when there are multiple cannabinoids working together, it produces what is referred to as the Entourage Effect. Since RSO is produced using the whole plant, all the cannabinoids the plant has to offer are present.

RSO is given to patients who are dealing with major chronic conditions. It is the “go to” for many who are diagnosed with cancer. The staff at ANC has the resources to help patients safely use RSO, it is not suggested to use RSO without some guidance due to its very powerful psychoactive effects.

RSO is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, which when used topically can treat burns, abrasions, and skin cancer.

ANC runs a deal on RSO every Saturday, and the team at ANC can educate patients on how to make their RSO into a tincture, which can make it easier to consume orally. Achieve reps are consistently onsite with swag for those who make an Achieve purchase.

ANC, along with their three house brands, offer a healthy alternative to pharmaceuticals from a team of dedicated professionals who are always eager and willing to help.

Unveiling the Silent Shifts: Hormonal Changes Before Menopause

Did you know that hormonal changes can start up to 10 years prior to menopause?

For many women, navigating this premenopausal period can be a frustrating and confusing experience as these subtle, silent shifts often go untreated.

Recognizing the symptoms and patterns that signal the start of peri-menopause can empower women to better understand their health and get the relief they deserve.

THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The first hormones to change during peri-menopause are progesterone and testosterone. Unpredictable periods, heavy

bleeding, or heightened PMS symptoms could be whispers from the body, signaling that change is underway. These symptoms are commonly associated with declining progesterone levels.

Low testosterone can manifest in a range of symptoms including weight gain and fatigue, diminished muscle, strength and libido, skin changes, and difficulty concentrating. Many women also experience changes in their mood, encompassing feelings of anxiety, depression, and increased irritability.

While changes in estrogen typically occur closer to menopause itself, fluctuating estrogen levels can lead women to experience the hallmark symptoms of hot flashes, joint pain, night sweats, and moodiness. Additionally, estrogen often spikes right before it declines, causing

many women to experience weight gain, bloating, cramping, and heavy periods.

GETTING RELIEF FROM SYMPTOMS

While peri-menopause is not commonly talked about, it is a common experience for women to be missing their mojo before menopause! Unfortunately, with a one-size-fits-all approach, many women are left to suffer until their labs are “out of reference range.” So what’s the solution?

Partnering with a physician that is well-versed in the intricacies of perimenopause is key for navigating these silent shifts with grace. Working with a women’s hormone specialist can ensure that accurate, comprehensive labs are run at the right time of your cycle, and that optimal lab values are considered when creating your individualized treatment plan.

Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain? You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration.

e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself.

ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:

1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…

5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked

If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.

What To Avoid

Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Real Estate

Scottsdale North: A Wider Lens on Home Trends

Hope you’re all doing well and staying cool! For those who’ve been faithfully following our regular statistical deep dives into the Scottsdale North real estate scene (and a big thanks to those who have!), we’ve got a tweak to our approach that you’ll want to hear about.

Over the years, my Scottsdale North market updates have used the primary lens of the 85266 zip code statistics because it is the geographic heart of the area. And it has been, and will continue to be, a good compass to help you navigate the world of real estate in our region. But we figured, why not cast our net a bit wider for a fuller statistical picture?

So, here’s the plan: From here on out, we’re crunching numbers from all three of our key zip codes - 85255, 85262, and 85266.

We have compiled that data into a series of charts.

There’s more data, more precision, and a broader view of what’s happening in our neck of the woods.

Here’s why this is a win for you:

The Complete Stats: By pulling data from all the zip codes, we get a more comprehensive view of the stats across Scottsdale North. The broader our data source, the stronger our predictive power becomes.

Sharper Insights: Our central zip code has been gold for general trends, but adding in the other two will give us those nitty-gritty details that can make all the difference.

Informed Decisions: With a wider set of numbers, you’ll be better equipped, whether you’re considering selling, buying, or just keen to keep your finger on the pulse of our local market’s health.

We’re all about giving you the clearest, most detailed stats on Scottsdale North’s real estate scene. And this change? We’re thinking it’s like upgrading our calculator to a supercomputer.

On the back page of this month’s newspaper, we have some charts that we will be tracking. As they are laid out there, it is way too much information for most people. I just want to introduce them to you. In the coming months though, I can use these charts to detail the trends we are seeing. Let’s begin with an example.

The largest trend nationally and locally is low inventory, so let’s start there.

The bars in the Active Listing graph at left show how many houses are on the market right now locally, in the three zip codes. And how many there were over the last 12 months. The orange line at the top details how many homes are available for sale nationally. Seeing this in a visual form should make it clear to see that inventory nationally is trending upward, but locally we are still in decline. That is great news for homeowners - and terrible news for buyers. Demand still exceeds supply. This is why our prices are continuing their upward trend.

In the heart of Scottsdale North, our community thrives, and understanding our real estate landscape is essential for

all of us. By broadening our perspective, we aim to keep you, our dear neighbors, best informed and empowered. As we dive into broader data, we promise deeper understanding and clearer decision-making. Remember, this isn’t just data—it’s our shared home story.

So, let’s keep the conversation going! To stay connected and informed, pop over to our YouTube page for our MarketMinute video updates at bit.ly/ ScoNoMarketMinute or give that QR code a quick scan. They are mostly under two minutes and will keep you informed.

Together, as a community, we’ll shape the future of our beloved Scottsdale North.

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

MY FAMILY IS… blended and beautiful. It’s not always easy being a stepmom but it’s one of the most wonderful experiences that has brought me more love, laughter, joy, and growth than I could have ever imagined.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my family. They keep me grounded and bring my life so much happiness and meaning.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” It’s the ultimate rom-com and I love Kate Hudson and Mathew McConaughey. They’re my favorite celebrity couple that never was.

HI, MY NAME IS… Adrianna Licitra.

I’VE LIVES IN SCOTTSDALE FOR TWO YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… it’s beautiful and there are so many amazing places to eat and fun things to do.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE

INCLUDES… as a working actress/model, the owner of a professional organizing business (Adrianna’s Organizing and Styling), and a stepmom of three children, the idea of a “typical day” is foreign to me. Each day is totally different and that’s how I like it! I usually try to squeeze in a hot yoga class before heading to whatever set I’m working on that day or whichever client’s home I’m organizing and then spend time with my family.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WANTED TO BE… an actress. For as long as I can remember acting has been my passion and my dream. Little me would be so excited about all the things I’m working on these days!

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Mamma Mia!”

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my amazing mother! She is the most resilient and compassionate woman I know. She was a single mother of four and still managed to accomplish so much and help so many people in her law career.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… “Barbie!” It was both hilarious and thought provoking with messages about self-acceptance,

feminism, and rejecting impossible beauty standards and societal expectations. Margot Robbie was the perfect choice for Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s performance was “Kenough” to keep me laughing throughout the whole movie.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… spent enjoying time with family or on set working with other talented and creative people to bring a story to life.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Arizona Helping Hands, which works to help the nearly 14,000 Arizona children in foster care. I can’t think of a better way to make a difference in the world than to help children who are in such a difficult situation.

MY LIFE IS… constantly pushing me out of my comfort zone both personally and professionally and I welcome the growth that comes with all of life’s inevitable challenges.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… the promise of forever with my amazing husband, Tyler, and my three beautiful stepchildren.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… ahh, it’s so difficult to choose just one but right now I’m dying to visit Peru and hike Machu Picchu with my husband!

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Your opinion of me is none of my business.” For the longest time, I feared judgement from others, and it kept me from pursuing my dreams and being authentically myself. Not anymore!

Estate Planning for the Blended Family

In first marriages, a couple generally have identical goals for their estate planning: take care of the surviving spouse for as long as he or she lives, then distribute what’s left to their children.

But second marriages can be different. The blended family – his children, her children and sometimes their children as well – makes for more complicated planning. Each spouse may have separate assets as well as their joint, community assets. Both usually want at least some of their assets to go to their own children after they die. At the same time, they want to make sure the surviving spouse has enough to live on.

With a blended family, a couple has to put a plan in place if they want to be sure their goals are met. This won’t happen automatically.

Think about one of the most famous blended families – the Brady Bunch. What happens if Carol and Mike have all their assets in joint tenancy and don’t have a will or trust? If Mike is the first to die, Carol will get all the couple’s joint assets. But then what happens when Carol dies? Without a will or trust, state law steps in. Arizona law says that Carol’s children get her assets. That

means the three girls get everything, and Mike’s boys are left out. I’ll leave it to your imagination whether those girls are going to share the wealth. If Mike and Carol want to divide everything between all six of the kids, they need a plan to assure that will happen.

Mike and Carol may want to be sure that the survivor of them is well cared for, but they also want to be sure their own kids share in what’s left after they are both gone. They can plan for this in their trust. The trust can provide that some of their assets go to an irrevocable trust at the first spouse’s death. The surviving spouse is the beneficiary during his or her lifetime. The trust, however, says where the assets left in the trust go when the survivor passes, and the survivor can’t change that. This way the first spouse to die is assures that there are assets distributed to his or her children when the second passes.

There are many factors going into estate planning for the blended family. However, most couples do have one common goal, which is doing the right thing for everyone involved: themselves, their spouse, their children, and their spouse’s children. A good estate planning attorney can help put together a plan that accomplishes your goals. We offer a free initial consultation. Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“Oppenheimer”

The true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s work towards the creation of the atomic bomb and its social fallout.

"Oppenheimer" is one of the most devastating motion pictures to emerge from the studio system in a long while, both in its presentation of its subject and his actions. This isn't a movie about triumph in the face of potential destruction; it's about a selfish man, nay, a selfish group, whose desire for selfpreservation threatens our very existence. Through clever editing and visuals, in both subtext and overt message, we witness the lead's gradual realization of the consequences of his actions— but only after he has acted to save himself. He complies until the deed is done, selecting his moral stance when it suits him. Meanwhile, the supporting characters either defend or confront him. The entire experience is suffocating yet undeniably brilliant.

“Talk

To Me”

A group of teens go too far in a supernatural game and suffer the consequences.

"Talk To Me" possesses a fury in its terror that's rarely seen. Each scene virtually chokes the air out of you, making you feel as if you're in as much danger as the characters. When the violence ensues, it's visceral; you can't look away. Coupled with a standout performance from newcomer Sophie Wilde, this film provides an experience that's both terrifying and emotionally devastating. It's a new installment in the horror canon that will, hopefully, influence many works to come.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”

The four mutant brothers have to step into responsibility when the world is at risk.

"Mutant Mayhem" serves well to introduce younger fans to the series, while also paying tribute to longtime aficionados. It's a solid, entertaining flick, bolstered by the chemistry among the four leads who truly capture the

'teenage' essence implied in the title. While the characterization and story may be somewhat lacking and familiar, the unique and thrilling animation and action more than compensate. The humor appeals to audiences of all ages. It's a fun, lighthearted romp, even if there isn't much depth to delve into.

combined with a thunderous score from Bear McCreary, puts the finishing touch on this film. It's a commendable addition to the creature feature genre.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”

The crew of the cargo ship Demeter find themselves fighting for their lives upon realizing there’s a stowaway onboard: Dracula.

This film is engagingly surprising, given that it's essentially "Alien" at sea, substituting the Xenomorph for Dracula. It's appeal lies in the direction, which conjures an isolating ambiance, thanks both to the confined space of the ship and the vast emptiness of the surrounding ocean. The narrative delivers a raw brutality that makes viewers flinch, especially a scene in the third act that stands out for its sheer cruelty and viciousness. One drawback is the excessively dark visuals, often obscuring the on-screen action. Nevertheless, the cast's unwavering commitment,

North Scottsdale’s Zamora Acupuncture Offers Hope for Back Pain and Nerve Pain Sufferers, Even After Failed Surgeries

For those who have been struggling with chronic back pain or nerve pain, even after undergoing unsuccessful back surgery, there’s a beacon of hope in North Scottsdale: Zamora Acupuncture.

Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a Doctor of Acupuncture, is compassionate and loves what she does. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Dr. Zamora later earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Acupuncture and is board certified through the NCCAOM. She combines evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with FDA-approved modern technology to help decrease pain levels. Many of her patients have undergone surgery, tried multiple medications, physical therapy, and injections, but still suffer from conditions such as back pain, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatic pain. We sat down with Dr. Zamora to learn more about Zamora Acupuncture.

SNN: What services do you offer that are unique?

KZ: I provide services for people who have been in pain for a long time. People come in with back pain, peripheral neuropathy, sciatic pain, and more. I provide evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern technology that has been FDA approved to decrease pain. I use my experience in healthcare to provide exceptional care. Often, the patients that I see have already tried everything else. They have done surgery, tried various medications, physical therapy, injections, and more. Many people think they are too far gone in terms of their pain. In many cases, this can lead to depression because they are unable to get out and enjoy life.

I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more pain-free life.

SNN: Is there hope for someone that’s had back surgery and still in pain?

KZ: Yes. I have treated many patients with pain after surgery successfully. We call this Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). The reality is that not every surgery is successful. Many times, patients have had multiple surgeries without success or with partial success.

SNN: If someone is not eligible for surgery due to weight or age, can you help them?

KZ: Absolutely. Acupuncture is a pain management option for these types of patients. I treat patients of all sizes and ages. Once pain levels decrease with acupuncture, many patients become more active and are able to lose weight easier. So that’s a very positive outcome! Additionally, with natural aging, there is no reason to suffer in pain. The treatments I provide can help decrease pain, even in cases of severe arthritis.

If you are suffering in pain, schedule a complimentary consultation at Zamora Acupuncture to discuss your condition. It’s never too late to start your journey to better health.

Zamora Acupuncture is located at 17787 N. Perimeter Dr., Suite A101, in Scottsdale. Learn more at  www. AZacu.com. Call for a complimentary consultation 480-300-5767.

The Flagstaff Trails Passport: FROM FOREST TREKS TO BOUTIQUE RETREATS

As trails lead to discoveries, Flagstaff’s hotel scene unfolds like a trove of stories waiting to be experienced.

Tucked in the vast expanses of the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest, Flagstaff unveils its newest charm - the Flagstaff Trails Passport. It’s not merely a guide but an invitation to traverse lesser-trodden paths, diving deep into the fabric of a city that fuses nature, culture, and luxury.

The Flagstaff Trails Passport operates with a simple yet engaging premise: check-in at the curated list of local trails, and based on the level of difficulty, earn points. The more you explore, the more rewards you gather. These range from commemorative stickers for just a single trail point, to wooden postcards for 5 points, and even a heartwarming opportunity to give back with a donation made in your name at 10 points to the FTI (Flagstaff Trails Initiative). Passionate hikers hitting the 15-point mark can snag a stylish fanny pack for future adventures.

Each trail in the passport beckons with a unique allure. One-point trails, like the Arizona Trail through Picture Canyon or the Campbell Mesa trail system, offer gentle strolls for those seeking serenity. Meanwhile, the Kachina Trail and the Little Elden Spring Trail, falling under the two-point category, up the ante a bit. And for the thrillseekers, the three-point rank awaits with challenges like the rigorous O’Leary Peak Trail and the lofty Kendrick Mountain Trail.

Little America Hotel Flagstaff emerges as a blend of elegance and wilderness. Located amidst 500 acres of pristine Ponderosa Pine Forest, this AAA Four Diamondrated hotel exudes luxury at every corner. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the sprawling rooms to the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. But it’s not all about the outdoors. The Silver Pine restaurant offers culinary delights, a perfect end to a day spent at nearby attractions like Meteor Crater.

Meanwhile, the High Country Motor Lodge resonates with younger travelers. Set just off Route 66, this boutique-style, pet-friendly hotel merges vintage aesthetics with modern vibes. Its proximity to Riordon Mansion and Northern Arizona University adds to its charm. But it’s the evening entertainment, tailored for Millennials and Gen Zs, that truly sets it apart, offering a fresh twist on Flagstaff hospitality.

Not too far off, the Weatherford Hotel stands as a testament to Flagstaff’s rich history. Dating back to 1897, this quirky-chic establishment retains its historic charm while catering to modern sensibilities. It’s a slice of history, positioned a heartbeat away from Route 66, allowing guests to relive the tales of old while reveling in contemporary comforts.

Outside the walls of these establishments, Flagstaff unfolds its myriad offerings. From exhilarating mountain biking trails, checking out the stars at the Lowell Observatory, leaf peeping in autumn’s hues, to visiting The Museum of Northern Arizona (established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens), to miles of Route 66 that echo with the mountain city’s vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone.

Of course, traversing trails and exploring Flagstaff’s gems can ignite a hunger only the city can satiate. James Beard nominees include Proper Meats + Provisions, Atria Restaurant, and Shift Kitchen + Bar, and are ready to tantalize the taste buds.

In Flagstaff, trails don’t just lead to nature’s wonders, but to boutique retreats, gastronomic adventures, and historic tales. So, grab your passport, let Flagstaff guide your steps and heartbeats, and dive deep into the city’s many tales. They’re all waiting to be written in your travel chronicles.

It’s a good idea to visit the experts at the Visitor Center, 1 E. Route 66, upon your Flagstaff arrival, as they can assist with recommendations and itinerary things to do.
