JSX Introduces Nonstop Flights from Scottsdale to Dallas

Photos courtesy of JSX

THIS FALL, VALLEY RESIDENTS WILL GAIN A NEW, CONVENIENT TRAVEL OPTION TO DALLAS. JSX, a hop-on public charter jet service, announced plans in May to launch nonstop service from Scottsdale Airport to Dallas Love Field beginning October 3. The route will operate once daily on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

“When customers ask, JSX delivers − and our dedicated fliers have been requesting a link between Dallas and Scottsdale since we first established our headquarters in the Lone Star State,” CEO Alex Wilcox announced in a statement.

“The entire JSX team takes great pride in providing safe, reliable public charter service to travelers across the nation, and we look forward to continuing our growth story as the year progresses.”

JSX’s semiprivate flights offer a streamlined check-in process that takes only minutes. Operating out of smaller private terminals, such as Dallas Love Field and Scottsdale Airport, passengers can avoid the typical airport hassles of traffic, crowds, and long security lines. The service promises a seamless travel experience, allowing travelers to check in just 20 minutes before their flights.

The new Dallas route marks the second recent expansion for JSX, following the

launch of service between Scottsdale and Orange County on May 17. The company, which operates 30seat airplanes, emphasizes comfort and convenience with features like business-class legroom, no middle seats, and power outlets at every row.

JSX, founded in 2016, initially launched in the Valley in 2019 with flights to Burbank out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Swift Aviation terminal. In December 2023, JSX relocated its local operations to Scottsdale Airport. Currently, JSX offers flights from Scottsdale to Las Vegas, Denver, Burbank, and Orange County.

The company paused its Nashville operations earlier this year to reallocate resources, but it continues to provide up to 100 public charter flights daily across more than two dozen destinations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, and Texas.

JSX aims to offer a luxurious yet accessible flying experience. With free Starlink Wi-Fi from hangar to hangar, complimentary drinks and snacks, and spacious seating, the service is designed for passengers looking to maximize their travel time and comfort. Additionally, JSX provides convenient rental car services through Go Rentals, ensuring that a vehicle is ready and waiting at the destination.

From the Desk of the Mayor: Keeping Scottsdale Safe

DEAR SCOTTSDALE FAMILIES,

At 11:15 p.m. I was having coffee with two police officers at the Chuck Box on Shea, when their radio alarms simultaneously blared. We ran to the patrol car, I jumped in the backseat “cage” and was told, “Buckle up!”

When we switched over to Pima Road the desert landscape swept by, as the cruiser raced at 90 mph with all flashers on. The so called “rock burglar” had been burglarizing homes near arroyos in the northern part of Scottsdale. The Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) had set a trap to catch the culprit—and I just happened to be on the ride-along that night.

The residents were away when the officers found the telltale shattered glass, off the side patio door. They pointed a flashlight at the sandy desert soil and there were boot footprints. It was a moonlit night as the MSO helicopter orbited the area and the forensic team arrived to plaster-cast the evidence.

I heard that the chopper’s infrared cameras detected a hot engine vehicle in the distance. Later, with all the activity, I barely noticed the early dawn light. The fresh desert air faded as we drove back. By the way, this incident happened before the Loop 101 existed.

Scottsdale public safety has always been our highest priority. Quality of life and safe neighborhoods are two key attributes of our city. Your neighborhood is our priority and community-wide communication with city public safety officials, HOA cooperation with local law enforcement, and participation in a neighborhood watch program are vitally important to keep our city safe.

The Scottsdale Police are ever vigilant and as mayor and with the support of council, SPD will always have the funding for tools, technology, training, and most of all, have earned our trust.

Scottsdale Police Chief Jeff Walther says it best: “Strong communitypolice partnerships are paramount to the health, safety, and welfare of our amazing, vibrant city. As the police chief, I am committed to leveraging the latest technology, employing the very best policing practices, prioritizing public collaboration, and engaging in strategic, long-term planning to realize ongoing success guided by our mission statement: As part of our community, we are united in purpose and selfless in action to ensure a safe Scottsdale.”

Our police department can help you start a neighborhood watch program where neighbors look out for neighbors,

or you can sign-up for the Scottsdale Police Citizens’ Academy for an indepth look at how the department operates. Other community programs include the Scottsdale Public Safety Teen Academy for ages 14 through 18, geared toward teaching young people about careers in police and fire. We also offer the Scottsdale Police Cadet Program for young people ages 14 to 21, which offers hands on law enforcement related learning opportunities.

In addition to our internationally accredited police department, Scottsdale is home to one of the finest fire departments in the nation. We are currently in the process of setting up a new ambulance division in our fire department. The new ambulance service will roll out in phases starting this year and eventually serve our entire city, which will create more efficient emergency response operations and give us the ability to move at faster rates. Currently Scottsdale utilizes the services of a third-party contractor for ambulance service. The fire department expects to have the ambulance division fully operational within three years.

Scottsdale Fire also values a strong relationship with the community. The department offers various community programs, including CPR, first aid, and safety classes. To learn more about emergency operations and life-saving skills go to ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

Returning to the rock burglar caper, Scottsdale police cracked the case with DNA evidence gathered from the rock. Of course, the car was impounded, the burglar was tracked down, months later found guilty and served time.

This letter would not be complete without mentioning the rash of Valleywide “dinnertime” burglaries involving a Chilean cartel. Since the criminal case is on-going, only information published by the SPD communications office is publicly known. Many neighbors witnessed that SPD utilized drones, high-tech detection and other means to apprehend the suspects.

One resident told me that the suspect laid low between his house and his neighbor’s wall. The neighbor, a former member of SEAL Team 6, broke out his night vision goggles. However, because our police “locked down” the area, and stayed for 12 hours, eventually the suspect flushed and was apprehended. Join me to thank the Scottsdale police men and women who protect and serve us.

Until next time, stay safe!

Scottsdale’s Reata Sports Complex Opens, Featuring Five International-Sized

Photos courtesy of city of Scottsdale

LAST MONTH MARKED THE GRAND OPENING OF THE REATA SPORTS COMPLEX, A NEW 29-ACRE FACILITY THAT SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCES SCOTTSDALE’S SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE. This state-of-the-art complex includes five international-sized soccer fields equipped with LED lighting, bringing the city’s total number of sports complex fields to 21.

The Reata Sports Complex, a project funded by a 2019 bond, is designed to be multifunctional. It will host competitive tournaments and serve as a key location for parking and rideshare services during Scottsdale’s major tourism events, such as Barrett-Jackson and the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This addition positions Reata alongside Bell94 and Scottsdale Sports complexes as pivotal venues driving sports tourism and bolstering the local economy.

“These facilities not only provide topnotch venues for sports competitions but also support our largest tourismgenerating events, contributing to economic growth,” says a city official.

Soccer Fields

Located at 9809 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Rd., the Reata Sports Complex is part of a broader initiative to develop up to 13 full-sized multiuse sports fields in the area. The complex’s strategic location and advanced facilities are expected to attract numerous sports events, enhancing Scottsdale’s reputation as a premier destination for sports tourism.

An exciting feature of the new complex is “Polygon Plaza,” a public art piece that is now part of the Scottsdale Public Art Permanent Collection. Created by artist Troy Neiman, the artwork features a design inspired by the classic soccer ball, incorporating 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons—a geometric configuration known as a truncated icosahedron. This piece not only celebrates the sport’s history but also adds a unique artistic element to the complex.

The artwork’s surrounding half-wall, made from bricks produced by Brick by Brick—a program coordinated by Scottsdale’s Human Services department to support individuals facing homelessness—adds both aesthetic and social value to the installation.

The Reata Sports Complex is open daily from sunrise to 10:30 p.m., offering residents and visitors ample opportunities to enjoy its facilities. As part of Scottsdale’s ongoing commitment to investing in sports and recreation infrastructure, the complex not only promotes community engagement but also drives economic growth through sports tourism.

Scottsdale’s upscale nightlife scene is about to get a lot more glamorous with the opening of Tell Your Friends, an underground cocktail and live music lounge. This new venue promises a blend of sultry ambiance, curated craft cocktails, elevated small bites, and dynamic live music performances. Located beneath The Americano, Tell Your Friends transports guests to an era of Gatsby-era allure with rich maroon velvet drapes, mirrored walls, and fanciful lighting. The bar, adorned with floor-to-ceiling lights, seamlessly connects to the adjacent stage, creating a dazzling backdrop for nightly live performances. The lounge, open Thursday through Sunday, features a variety of talented vocalists and musical acts that blend classic sounds with a modern twist.

Renowned Arizona Chef Beau MacMillan oversees the menu, bringing his fine-dining expertise to a selection of upscale small bites. Highlights include TYF Korean fried chicken with kimchi honey and smoked bacon ranch ($25), fire-roasted oysters with Chinese sausage and sesame ($30), and vodka-cured salmon & potato ‘pizza’ with dill crème fraiche and smoked salmon roe ($26). For a truly luxurious experience, guests can opt for caviar D’Aquitaine Ossetra with chilled vodka shots ($220).

The cocktail menu, crafted by awardwinning bartender Keifer Gilbert, features

approximately 20 unique drinks. Signature cocktails include Friends with Benefits, a whiskey concoction bottled and cured in beeswax ($25); One Time Thing, a blend of cognac, banana, and sherry ($26); and Flapper Fizz, a vodka and champagne mix ($24). Classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and Negroni are also available, all priced at $20.

“At Tell Your Friends, we’re blending simple, snackable dishes with luxurious, memorable touches,” says Chef MacMillan. “Keifer and I collaborated closely to pair phenomenal cocktails with delightful bites that will inspire and excite our guests. Imagine enjoying a great martini with an amazing onion dip on homemade chips or indulging in fried chicken topped with caviar – there’s nothing better. Also, our talented staff embodies genuine hospitality, ensuring every guest feels welcomed and leaves feeling even better than when they arrived.”

Tell Your Friends is the debut of a collaboration between Creation Hospitality, owners of The Americano and Mora Italian, and Clive Collective, owners of Cala. Accessed through a discreet side door, the 52-seat venue offers an intimate and luxurious setting. Located at 17797 N. Scottsdale Rd., reservations are recommended due to limited space.

Phoenix Children’s Unveils 407-Foot Mural to Advance Hope and Healing for Patient Families

Phoenix Children’s recently unveiled a 407-foot commissioned mural that has transformed a heavily trafficked corridor into a captivating and exciting journey for children and their families. Nearly two years in the making, the art installation, called “Wonder And Wander” brings vibrant colors and imaginative designs to a major hospital hallway through which 70,000 children are transported each year.

The installation is a collaboration between Phoenix Children’s and RxART, a nonprofit organization that aims to help children heal through the power of visual art. Inspired by RxART’s mission, Phoenix Children’s Board Chair and RxART Board Member David Lenhardt worked closely with the organization to create an art installation at Phoenix Children’s Hospital – Thomas Campus. “Wonder And Wander” is the largest project ever completed by RxART.

“Our goal was not only to brighten a major corridor at Phoenix Children’s but also to reduce anxiety and create a calming environment for the thousands of children who are wheeled down this hall for surgery, imaging and other critical healthcare procedures,” says Lenhardt. “You can’t help but smile when you see this piece. I know it will make all the difference for kids battling illness or trauma who may need an extra dose of joy.”

His enthusiasm for the project was shared by the health system’s Children’s Advisory Board (CAB), a council of patients and siblings ages 12 to 18 whose perspectives directly impact the patient family experience. The CAB members had previously identified the hallway as an area of the hospital that needed to be more patient friendly

and uplifting. They knew the artwork would breathe new life into the space and bring hope to kids.

Lenhardt worked alongside RxART founder, Diane Brown, to identify the right artist for Phoenix Children’s installation. They enlisted contemporary artist Shara Hughes, whose art has been displayed in museum exhibitions worldwide, to create the otherworldly landscape piece.

Hughes used colored pencil, oil pastel, watercolor, marker, and crayon on paper – materials familiar to children – to create “Wonder And Wander.” The design was then enlarged and transferred to Acrovyn, a hospital-safe, custom wall-covering application.

“Sometimes, the installation feels immersive, like you are in the landscape, being hugged by the trees on either side and sometimes it is viewed as if you are a passenger looking outside of a window on one side,” says Hughes. “The drawing shifts in materials and perspective of what you can and can’t see ahead and behind you. While the unknown is present in the drawings, I wanted it to feel like a safe, positive, and hopeful space where kids could reflect, to find a moment of respite, and see a landscape change, move, and grow. I wanted it to feel exciting and hopeful to move through.”

“Seeing our vision come to fruition in such an impactful way, for such an important purpose, has been such a rewarding experience,” says Lenhardt. “I am so grateful for RxART and especially for Shara, who put her heart and soul into creating the perfect piece for Phoenix Children’s and the families we serve.”

WHITE, AND CHOO CHOO: INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona Names 2024 Bigs of the Year

Photos courtesy of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) has named its 2024 Bigs of the Year. Out of the more than 1,000 volunteers who serve as mentors to youth in Maricopa County, BBBSAZ has selected Geoffrey Nail and Ivy Davis as outstanding examples of volunteerism and the power of mentoring.

Research has shown that children who have mentors are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities, volunteer in their community, and graduate from high school; and less likely to engage in risky behavior like underage drug and alcohol use.

BIG BROTHER GEOFFREY NAIL AND LITTLE BROTHER RAAZI

Not only has he been a fantastic Big Brother to his Little, but Geoffrey Nail has been involved and given back to the agency in many different ways over the years, including by serving as a Big Brothers Big Sisters

board member and previous president of the Young Professionals Council.

Nail’s Little Brother Raazi was in the fourth grade when they were matched. Raazi’s mother believed he would benefit from having a younger positive male role model in his life, as his grandfather was the only male influence for him at that time. Nail has been a consistent, committed role model to Raazi since that time. Through the years he has been with Raazi for every major milestone. Raazi graduated from high school in December and is currently working. He was accepted to

NAU in the fall with a partial scholarship but is also looking at other options such as trade schools before making his final decision. With the continued support and friendship with Nail, Razzi is ready to embark on the next chapter of his life. He witnessed how bright his future could be with Nail as his role model.

BIG SISTER IVY DAVIS AND LITTLE SISTER RHIANNA

Davis and Rhianna were matched during the pandemic in 2021, when Rhianna was just 14. Often, Bigs enter the lives of Littles at a time when they need it most, and this is true for this match. While they built a relationship over shared meals and trampoline park outings, Rhianna was struggling with anxiety and depression. While she was able to receive treatment she was still challenged with significant instability in her life. Davis maintained regular visits and outings with Rhianna during this turbulent time, serving as a consistent, reliable support she could count on. Because of the special bond Ivy and Rhianna formed early on, they have

been able to effectively navigate these challenges together.

Now 17, Rhianna has shared that she can tell that Davis cares for her and she is grateful. She says Davis is the role model for who she aspires to be. Davis has been, and continues to be, a light for Rhianna during her journey, walking with her as she finds her way. Through consistency and genuine care, Ivy is able to support Rhianna in reaching her full potential.

Harness the Sun

Who needs a fancy kitchen when the sun can do the cooking for you? This easy and fun activity lets you harness the power of the sun to create a tasty treat. It's a fantastic way to learn about science while having a blast in your backyard.

WHAT YOU NEED

• A cardboard box (like a pizza box)

• Aluminum foil

• Matte black construction paper

• Clingfilm (plastic wrap)

• Marshmallows, chocolate, graham crackers (or other food, but avoid raw meat)

SOLAR OVEN FUN

1. Prep the Box: Line the inside of the box lid with aluminum foil, shiny side up. This will reflect the sunlight. Cover the bottom of the box with matte black paper, which will absorb the heat.

2. Set Up Your Food: Place graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows (or chosen food) inside the box. You may want to experiment with and without a plate.

3. Catch the Sun: Position the box so it faces the sun. Adjust the lid so it reflects the sunlight directly onto the food.

4. Cover and Cook: You may want to cover the inside base of the box with clingfilm to keep your food clean. Wait for about 20 minutes, and voilà, your s'mores will be ready.

SOLAR SCIENCE IN ACTION

As your solar oven cooks your food, it’s also teaching you some cool science principles:

• Heat Absorption: The matte black paper absorbs the heat, helping to cook your food.

• Reflection: The aluminum foil reflects sunlight onto the food, increasing the temperature.

• Conduction: The heat is transferred from the foil to the food, just like in a real oven.

EXTRA EXPERIMENTS

Want to take your solar cooking to the next level? Try these fun experiments:

• Crayon Meltdown: Place a crayon on a shiny

metal plate and another on a plastic plate. Which one melts faster? Why do you think that is?

• Plate Colors: Does food heat up faster on a black plate or a white plate? Why?

• Design Upgrades: Think about how you could improve your solar oven. Maybe a hinge for the lid or extra insulation?

In the intense sunshine of the Valley summer, your solar oven will work wonders. So, gather your materials and let the sun turn your backyard into a fun and educational cooking adventure. Enjoy your delicious solar-cooked creations!

Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Jaime Spinato.

I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 35 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the weather is beautiful. I have grown to love the desert. Moving here from Illinois, I didn’t think we had four seasons. It is not like the four seasons we had in Chicago, but we do have seasons within the desert. Spring is my favorite. I love the way the desert looks during this time of year.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… coffee. Always. My mornings are fast and furious but will include time with my husband drinking coffee and catching up. Then I pack school lunches, kiss the kids, and get ready for work.

MY FAMILY IS… our two daughters and my best friend and husband, Anthony.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… coffee.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Home Alone I and II.” It never gets old to watch these movies over Christmas. It brings back happy memories of my brother and me.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a veterinarian.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Fugees: Killing me Softly.” I don’t sing it well but I will sing it nevertheless.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my husband.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my kids make me laugh daily. It’s the same with my husband.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… spending time in my garden and cooking a delicious meal.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… I work in community outreach so it’s hard to pick a favorite: Ryan House, A New Leaf, Magicians on Mission, Dogs 4 Vets, Military Assistance Mission, Alice Cooper Solid Rock Teen Centers, and St. Vincent de Paul. There are so many wonderful nonprofits!

MY LIFE IS… a blessing.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… salvation.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… to visit Italy.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… never be a prisoner of your past. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence.

Why Choosing a Local Agent Can Maximize Your Home’s Value

Agents come in all shapes and sizes. Some agents are area specialists, and some are jack-of-all-trades, covering the entire metropolitan area. So, what’s the advantage of using a local area agent, and does it translate into more money in your pocket?

IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE AREA

Much of the Valley used to be farmland, with the vegetation and terrain scraped off and cleared away. In contrast, Scottsdale North has thicker, richer vegetation that has been protected and preserved. The area is less congested, the night skies are darker, and many communities have amenities that promote an active and social lifestyle where you actually know

your neighbors. Out-of-state buyers prioritizing flashy HGTV-style home features might overlook these benefits unless they’re pointed out to them. They might miss these important aspects.

We found that over 35% of the agents who showed homes in Scottsdale North were not licensed in Scottsdale. How well can an agent who primarily works in Buckeye sell an out-of-state buyer on your home and lifestyle?

EXCLUSIVE INSIDE INFORMATION

All real estate is local. As mentioned before, Scottsdale North is very different from the rest of the Valley. It has the highest percentage of baby boomers in the U.S. and knowing what this demographic

values is crucial. An out-of-area agent can look up home prices, but they won’t have firsthand experience with the homes that have sold to accurately compare them to past or current listings. Most communities have quirks that affect a home’s value, like how close they are to amenities such as clubhouses, golf courses, pickleball courts, and pools. These factors can be good or bad, and only experience over time can tell you which. Valuing mountain and golf views takes a lot of practice!

EXTENSIVE DATABASE OF PROSPECTIVE BUYERS

Depending on how long they’ve been active, a good local agent will build up a database of hundreds to thousands of potential buyers for your home. Their marketing efforts, which are focused on your area, include print, postal, and online ads that attract buyers at all interest levels. Local open houses bring in many buyers, some of whom find the home isn’t quite right for them and your home might fit better. Additionally, past clients and business partners often refer new buyers who are specifically looking in your area and might be interested in exactly what you have to offer.

MOTIVATION AND FINANCIAL BENEFITS

Local agents are more motivated to work in the favor of local residents compared to those who cover a larger area or the entire Valley. In a small community like Scottsdale North, word of mouth spreads quickly, especially for agents handling many transactions. These agents rely heavily on their reputation, which they protect because they are invested in the community. Their future success depends directly on their clients’ results.

Our team works hard to get our sellers the highest price for their homes because it’s beneficial for both them and us. For ex-

ample, we can often show statistically that our listings sell for about 6% more than the area average. This higher sale price can cover the usual commission fees, making it feel like sellers are selling their homes for free. Cost-conscious sellers appreciate this, and they leave reviews like: “We trusted Scott’s knowledge of the market and his faith in the value of our home and were rewarded when he took multiple offers the first open house week and closed our sale significantly above our listing price, and at an unheard of price per square foot!” In today’s online world, more great testimonials mean more great clients. So, our sellers get more money, and we get more clients!

BUILDING TRUST AND LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS

Choosing a local agent brings many benefits, including deep market knowledge and a personalized approach that truly benefits both buyers and sellers. The experience and commitment of a local agent can transform your real estate journey. If you do not live in Scottsdale North and would like to use a great local agent but don’t know one, I would be happy to help you find one - even out of state. Just give me a call or drop me an email. If you do live in Scottsdale North, we would love to help you maximize your home’s value. Give me a call at 480-634-5000.

Scottsdale’s New Dog Park to Offer Unique Features and Public Art

Rendering courtesy of city of Scottsdale

The eagerly anticipated Thompson Peak Park Dog Park is beginning to take shape, although it will be some time before it welcomes its first canine visitors. The city has started “native tree salvage and relocation” efforts in preparation for the upscale, $6.1 million dog park.

Located at Thompson Peak Parkway and Hayden Road, the park is set to span 3.5 acres and feature three separate fenced and gated play areas, designed to provide ample space for dogs to exercise and socialize. These areas, or cells, will include a 1.5-acre section with a grass surface, a 1-acre section with a wood chip surface, and another 1-acre section with a grass surface. This configuration allows for rotation, ensuring that each area remains well-maintained and free from the wear and tear that constant use can cause.

“Dog parks require a great deal of space

and onsite staffing to be maintained correctly,” says a city official. “By rotating the play areas, we can keep the surfaces in good condition and provide a better experience for park users.”

In addition to the play areas, the park will offer various amenities to enhance the experience for both dogs and their owners. These include shade canopies, benches, water fountains, and pet waste disposal stations. A footbridge will connect the off-leash area to existing park amenities, and additional parking along Hayden Road will accommodate visitors. A new restroom building will also be constructed.

Public art will be a highlight of the new park. Scottsdale Public Art is collaborating with artist Shachi Kale to create four art panels for the shade structures in the center cell of the dog park. Kale’s whimsical designs will feature plant life, mountain landscapes, and a variety of dogs in playful settings, providing a delightful visual experience for visitors.

“Using my love for storytelling and whimsy and folk art, this design incorporates the plant life, mountain landscape, and a variety of dogs, doing dog things,” says Kale. “Dog lovers will enjoy the range of dog shapes and personalities, and this is a fun nod to why dog parks are such a wonderful place where our dogs can explore and be in the company of other dogs in a safe, fun way.”

The project is part of the Phase II amenities included in the Thompson Peak Park conceptual master plan and was identified in the Community Services Master Plan from June 2015. After the native tree salvage and relocation over the next few months, park construction is set to begin in the fall.

Scottsdale is home to several popular dog parks, including Chaparral Dog Park, Horizon Dog Park, and Vista del Camino Park. Each offers unique features and amenities, catering to the needs of Scottsdale’s dog-loving community.

Chaparral Dog Park, the city’s most popular, includes three acres of grass, benches, play features, and water fountains. Horizon Dog Park, located in a retention basin, boasts a large shade structure and a water feature to control dust, though it is prone to flooding after storms. Vista del Camino Park provides a half-acre dog park with shade trees, benches, and water fountains.

Arizona Sports Musician Connects with People Living with Dementia

Bobby Freeman remembers reading about the ebony baby grand at Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Care and Education Campus in Phoenix. The stunning piano had been generously donated by a man who was grateful for the compassionate care his wife received.

The longtime organist for the Arizona Diamondbacks recalls thinking: “I hope they let me play it someday.” More than a year later, Freeman was pinching himself as he sat down to give a special performance to assisted living residents and adult day club members at the campus.

The enthusiastic audience tapped their feet and clapped their hands as the gifted self-taught musician played dozens of tunes, from Elvis and Beatles to Queen and Elton John, plus classics like “Für Elise,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Phantom of the Opera.” When Freeman played “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” they cheered wildly as one lifelong baseball fan shouted: “Charge!”

“Music is something we never forget,” Freeman says. “I’m communicating with them through music. There’s a language there and memories come flooding back.

Bobby Freeman played an assortment of tunes at the Dementia Care and Education Campus.

My goal is to touch their heart.” Freeman has been with the D-backs since the team’s first season in 1998. “I knew since I was 2 years old that I wanted to be an organist.”

At 13, he became a professional musician back in his native Cleveland. “I love to share the gift of music,” he says.

“Not only is Bobby an amazing piano player, but he’s also very engaging and interactive,” says Angela Hofler, life enrichment coordinator at the campus. “Everyone really loved that they could shout out a song and he could play it!” After the show, Freeman received many compliments from the audience. “They thought he was wonderful!”

Music therapy is a vital component of Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Program because musical memories, especially songs with emotional associations, are deeply rooted in long-term memory. “It can bring joy and connection to someone at any stage in their dementia journey,” says Amanda Marcum, the campus’ board-certified music therapist. “It was so rewarding to see our residents and club members reliving those happy emotions watching Bobby play.”

Beware of the $599 Living Trust!

If you are like me, you are receiving mail and seeing signs advertising revocable living trusts at steep discounts. Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware!

We see these plans in our office. Clients sometimes come in with worries that what was done isn’t quite what they requested. Most often, they are right. Once we review the plan, it isn’t what they want to have happen with their estate. In one particularly egregious case, there were no beneficiaries listed.

Often, the purpose of this low-ball offer isn’t to give you a good estate plan, but to sell you an annuity or other investment. A friend of mine passed along a story about someone she knew who felt held hostage in the room with the salesperson who was bound and determined she was going to invest in an annuity. Make no mistake about it– most often you are meeting with a salesperson for a financial product, and not with an attorney. They are more interested in your money and you investing with them than they are in assuring you have a proper plan that serves you and your family well.

As estate planning attorneys, we are most interested in making sure that you have an estate plan to protect you if you are incapacitated and to make your estate as easy as possible to administer on your passing (and without court proceedings).

There is a reason that attorneys are referred to as “attorney and counselor at law.” While an experienced estate planning attorney like me has the technical expertise to draft documents correctly and that is important, it is equally important that we get to know your situation. An experienced estate attorney can guide you with delicate decisions, including how to provide for a child or elderly parent who has special needs without interrupting valuable government benefits; how to provide for your children fairly (which may not be equally); who should be the guardian of your minor children; and how you can protect your children’s or grandchildren’s inheritance from creditors and irresponsible spending. That discount plan, thrown together without more discussion, won’t do the same job.

Most people think their estate planning will be simple. But the reality is that our estates are personal, and most people do need some personalized planning… and you may not know just what you need without the guidance of an experienced attorney. It is far better to spend a little more now and make sure your plan is created correctly than to try to save a few dollars and have things turn out badly and cost your family thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees later. You won’t be around to straighten things out or keep the peace then. Don’t you think you owe it to those you love to do a proper estate plan?

To schedule a no charge consultation or review with one of our attorneys, please call us at 602-375-6752.

Optimize Your Body and Mind

Functional Medicine and Brain Treatment Center

Identifying dysfunction in the body and mind and addressing the root causes has improved a wide range of physical and neurological problems.

Beat the Heat Summer is the perfect time to address your health with MVP Medical Care.

Welcome to the hot Arizona summer! While nine months of the year in Arizona are fabulous, the summer months get a bit much for those of us who get stuck in town. There are some benefits though – less traffic – because everyone else is out of here or hiding in the house in the air conditioning.

Well, we at MVP Medical Care are still working away and we wanted to let you know that summer is a great time to get in to get your health issues addressed, especially because travel is easier and summer’s a bit slower for businesses in town. From autism to depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic fatigue, PTSD, weight gain, belly fat, chronic head injury symptoms, we’ve got answers to help resolve your symptoms, which many times your primary care physician does not. And we DON’T like prescription medicine either.

What Makes MVP Medical Care so Unique?

MVP refers to YOU, our Most Valued Patient.

We o er highly focused personal care from a board-certified family practitioner with more than two decades of experience. Known as the Valley’s premier provider of integrative and functional medicine, Dr. Sosnowski has a strong reputation for investing inordinate amounts of time getting to know, diagnose and treat her patients.

FUNCTIONAL AND INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

We work to locate the underlying causes of unwanted symptoms and disease, as opposed to just addressing symptoms.

We

A

FREQUENCY-SPECIFIC

At MVP Medical Care we focus on treating complex problems naturally. Dr Sosnowski is a family physician, board certified in integrative medicine and certified in functional medicine. If you’re tired of being handed another prescription medication for whatever you’re coming to your doctor with, then it’s time to check us out! Functional medicine is all about getting to the underlying cause of disease using the research that’s done in the lab.

Rather than waiting 20 years for the pharmaceutical companies to come up with a prescription for that disease, we’re using vitamins, minerals, and enzymes to get the body balanced naturally and get you back to feeling 100% without the need for prescription drugs.

That’s the way it was supposed to be, and used to be, before the development of all the pharmaceuticals.

Nowadays, physicians are only taught to think: “what diagnosis is it and what drug to I give?” Unfortunately, drugs, very often, don’t fix the real underlying issue. For instance, medication for high blood pressure, once you get started on it, you’re on it for life – “just keep taking it,” says your doc. Well, if it really worked to resolve blood pressure, then you’d not need to keep taking it over time, let alone add a second and third medication over the years.

Diabetes medications are the same – they just cover up the numbers and the problems are still festering underneath. To get true health, we need to address our lifestyle – the food we eat, the exercise we do or don’t do, the sleep we get or don’t get, the way we deal with stress, the toxins we get into! Using lifestyle factors to address chronic health issues, along with supplements, is what Dr. Jennifer Sosnowski is a master of.

Ready to feel better? Please, call us NOW at 480-5887787. Hunter at the front desk will be happy to take your call and get you scheduled for a free 15-minute discussion with Dr. Sosnowski to talk about the issues you’re dealing with and how we might help you feel better.

THESE 15 MINUTES MIGHT LITERALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE! Call us at 480-588-7787.

Why Your Back Still Hurts (And How to Finally Get Relief!)

Does this sound like you?

You’ve seen everyone for low back pain and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages, but the pain came back (or worse, was aggravated). Chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone else, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate and would need to wait until it got worse.

As someone who specializes in treating back pain, I hear these stories all the time. I know how frustrating it is to feel like you’re stuck at square one. But the silver lining is, you’ve actually eliminated the majority

of causes for your low back pain. If you’ve seen everyone and are still experiencing back pain, your story is likely one of these commonly missed pain patterns:

PATTERN ONE

“My pain is worse when I sit, stand, or lie down for a long period of time. I’m constantly having to shift my weight to ease the discomfort, and even have trouble sleeping because of it. If I go from sitting to standing, it fires up. The pain starts in my lower back and travels down the back of my thigh and side of my leg. Everyone thought it was sciatica, but none of the treatments worked.”

PATTERN TWO

“My pain gets better with rest, becomes aggravated with movement, and sometimes travels towards my butt. If I get a massage, it feels better for a bit — then gets worse a few hours later. Pressure usually makes the pain worse.”

PATTERN THREE

“I’m scared to throw my back out again. When I’m in pain, I can’t do anything; It happens when I don’t expect it — like when I’m picking up my kid’s toy.”

GET BACK INTO ACTION

If one of these experiences sound similar to yours, your pain is likely a ligament, nerve, or muscle problem — and not the ones you’ve been told about!

I’ve spent years researching and treating patients experiencing these patterns, and I don’t want you to be stuck at square one.

With our 90 Minute Deep Dive (which includes our Pain Profile, 32-Point Back Inspection, Precision Back Scan, and Diagnostic Mapping Technique) we’ll not only get you an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you!) but will also provide you with a personalized treatment plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

“I Saw the TV Glow”

to make them truly scary. Ultimately, “Tarot” lacks soul and passion, feeling like it was made simply to be released.

“Challengers”

Reality blurs for two teenagers who become obsessed with a canceled TV show.

Sometimes, there’s a horror film that you watch and immediately know it will be influential for its generation. Made by and for the creepypasta generation, “I Saw the TV Glow” is a quaint, slow-burn horror that captures the eerie feeling of the everyday not feeling right and how it eventually boils over. With deep colors and slightly detached performances, the film conveys the unsettling idea of not being yourself but being unable to face it. It’s terrifying yet also sad, like watching someone spiral out of control. With a terrific soundtrack, it’s everything one wants from horror while also showing a bright future for the genre.

“Tarot”

A group of friends are hunted by the spirits of a cursed Tarot card.

Some movies are made just to fill a release date, and “Tarot” is one of them. There’s a potentially entertaining film hidden within, resembling a supernatural slasher, but it’s bogged down by a boring plot and annoying characters, making it impossible to be thrilled. While the creature designs are impressive, they are wasted without any effort

A tennis player and his wife/coach clash personally and professionally with her ex.

There’s a sensuality infused in every frame of Luca Guadagnino’s newest film, which is much welcomed. The three leads have incredible chemistry that transcends typical romance, extending even into the tennis scenes. These scenes are astounding, with Guadagnino executing shots I thought were impossible, bringing a kinetic energy to the film. Additionally, the film is genuinely funny in a way that few studio films are. Topped off with an incredible score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, we have a true cinematic treat.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”

Generations after Caesar’s death, a new era begins in the fight for prosperity between apes and humans.

Following up the triumph of the previous “Planet of the Apes” trilogy was always going to be a tough job, and “Kingdom” sort of succeeds. It establishes its own identity with engaging characters and tone. However, it drags at points, making a noble attempt to showcase more of the world but not quite getting there. Structurally, it sometimes feels like a repeat of the previous film, “War.” Despite this, the film shines when it really gets going,

thanks to the talented cast, particularly Peter Macon and Kevin Durand. It also explores the human and ape dynamic in a more interesting and uncertain way than previous films, offering a fresh angle for future installments. As a start, it’s worthwhile.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid

Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain?

You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration.

e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed.

is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:

1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…

5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked

If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.

Of It For Good)

What to Avoid

Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

How to Get Rid of Sciatica Pain for Good

If you’re ready to get to the root cause of your sciatica, and want to get back to being active with con dence, and without painkillers or surgery, you may qualify for a complimentary “discovery visit” with a specialist. To apply, email info@ thedoctorsofpt.com and say “discovery visit” along with your phone number and we’ll reach out. Or apply at: www.thedoctorsofpt.com/discovery-session.

THE SCOTTSDALE RESORT & SPA Completes $40 Million Renovation

Scottsdale’s newest leisure destination provides guests with premier dining and wellness experiences.

Photos courtesy of The Scottsdale Resort & Spa

As one of the largest renovations to be completed in the Phoenix-metro area this year, The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, a Curio Collection Resort by Hilton emerges as a full-service luxury retreat, captivating both global travelers and Valley locals, with the completion of a $40 million renovation encompassing all guestrooms and public spaces, including Luna Spa and the introduction of four new distinct dining destinations.

Marking the largest renovation in the property’s 50-year history, The Scottsdale Resort’s new residential-style guestrooms take inspiration from the property’s historic charm by intertwining legacy with contemporary allure for a fusion of modern sophistication and signature Southwestern appeal. With room rates starting from $232 per night, every guest room boasts leather accents, intricately embroidered headboards and hand-carved wood – all complemented with pops of modern Southwestern patterns.

A standout of the resort’s transformation is the conversion of an existing building into The Stillman Villas, an enclave comprised of 12 two-story villas that offer high-end finishes, upgraded and enhanced amenities, expansive golf course views, and

a private pool exclusive to Stillman guests. Starting from $1,300 per night, these villas accommodate up to 14 guests and are ideal for parties, family gatherings, and groups seeking the pinnacle of the resort’s offering.

With all aspects of the resort’s renovation now on full display, resort guests will discover a range of exciting dining experiences featuring elevated Sonoran cuisine with global influences, a health-focused café, a hidden speakeasy, and a familyfriendly lounge with interactive games. The expansive fitness center and Luna Spa are equally impressive, which provide rejuvenation and serenity for the body, mind, and spirit.

Culinary Experiences

Renowned Valley Chef Ken Arneson, who serves as the area executive chef for Driftwood Hospitality, leads The Scottdale Resort’s culinary evolution into a destination for all.

La Fogata Kitchen and Bar: Situated against the backdrop of panoramic vistas of the McCormick Ranch Golf Club and Camelback Mountain, La Fogata invites guests to delve into modern Sonoran cuisine married with a fusion of global influences. Open for breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner, La Fogata’s menu is crafted utilizing locally sourced ingredients.

The Madam: Step into the allure of a bygone era at The Madam, a speakeasy reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties and the prohibition era. The Madam invites guests on a journey where classic cocktails meet modern creations. Upon check-in, guests receive a secret password, ensuring an exclusive entry into this intimate space. For non-guests, acquiring the password becomes a delightful task, requiring interaction with the staff or the resort’s social media pages to find out where The Madam keeps a watchful eye.

The Social Boardroom: Adjacent to The Madam, The Social Boardroom awaits, offering a casual and welcoming lounge-style atmosphere for all ages. This space invites guests to unwind with various entertainment options, including pool, shuffleboard, board games and a golf simulator. Bartenders and servers stand ready to serve cocktails and small bites.

Barnaby’s Café + Wine Bar: At Barnaby’s Café + Wine Bar, the morning hours welcome guests with a coffee bar and a selection of fresh pastries, breakfast sandwiches featuring meats from the inhouse butcher, vegan items and a variety of teas, and coffee. Barnaby’s transitions into a fast-casual lunch spot with paninis and salads tailored to midday cravings. In the evening, Barnaby’s Wine Bar comes

alive, featuring Arizona and regional wines to be enjoyed within the café or out in the Spanish-style courtyard.

Wellness & Fitness

From hot stone massages to aromatic body treatments, a premier wellness experience awaits.

Luna Spa: Spa guests will find where tranquility meets rejuvenation in the heart of the serene Scottsdale desert. Dedicated to cultivating balance and relaxation, the 3,200-square-foot spa features nine indoor treatment rooms, a Zen meditation garden, a sauna, a steam room, a co-ed tranquil room and a refreshing cold plunge.

Fitness: The resort is complete with a 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness facility featuring Life Fitness cardio machines, Peloton bikes, Therabody Muscle Relief, free weights, and weight machines.

Meetings & Events

When The Scottsdale Resort originally opened in 1976, it was the country’s first conference resort. Today, that legacy lives on with the refresh of 18 versatile meeting venues with 45,000 square feet of flexible interior space and an additional 40,000 square feet across its picturesque outdoor areas.
