SCOTTSDALE’S RAILROAD PARK TO GET UPGRADES, INCLUDING SPLASH PAD AND INDOOR PLAY AREA
Photo and rendering courtesy of McCormickStillman Railroad Park
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is undergoing significant upgrades aimed at enhancing visitor experiences during the hot summer months. Construction on these new features began last month, with completion expected within a year.
The centerpiece of the $13.1 million project is The Roundhouse, a new 10,000-square-foot building that will house a train-themed indoor play structure designed like a locomotive engine and a multipurpose room. This addition is set to provide a much-needed retreat from the summer heat.
Alongside The Roundhouse, the park will see the installation of new restrooms to accommodate both the indoor facility and outdoor visitors. A 5,000-square-foot splash pad, a highly anticipated feature among regular patrons, is also in development. This new play area is designed to offer a refreshing escape for children during peak summer temperatures.
Further enhancements include a revamped entry plaza adjacent to Stillman Station, complete with seating areas, vibrant plantings, and public art. The park will also receive upgrades to pathways, exterior lighting, and landscaping, which aim to improve overall accessibility and enjoyment.
Funding for these improvements draws from multiple sources. A significant portion is covered by a 2019 bond measure approved by Scottsdale voters, specifically allocated for adding a splash pad and improving park walkways. Additional financial support is provided by the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society, the park’s nonprofit partner, which is purchasing the indoor play structure. The remainder of the funding comes from the city’s general fund, park revenues, and tourism funds.
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, known for generating about $2.5 million in annual revenue, continues to be a flagship attraction in Scottsdale. For more information, visit scottsdaleaz.gov.

FBI Phoenix Highlights Alarming Rise in “Phantom Hacker” Scam Targeting
THE FBI’S PHOENIX DIVISION IS ALERTING THE PUBLIC TO AN INCREASINGLY PREVALENT SCAM, DUBBED THE “PHANTOM HACKER” SCAM, THAT HAS ALREADY CAUSED SEVERAL ARIZONANS, PARTICULARLY THE ELDERLY, TO LOSE THEIR LIFE SAVINGS. This sophisticated fraud involves tricking victims into believing that their bank accounts have been compromised by foreign hackers.
The scam unfolds in three distinct stages, beginning with the victim receiving an unsolicited communication—often a pop-up message or an email—claiming to be from a tech support service. The message urges the victim to call a provided customer support number. Once contact is made, the person on the other end, posing as a tech support agent, instructs the victim to download a remote access program to supposedly rid their computer of viruses.
This access allows the scammer to conduct a fake virus scan and falsely claim that the victim’s computer is at imminent risk of being hacked. The scammer then uses this pretense to persuade the victim to log into their bank accounts under the guise of securing them, thereby obtaining information about where the victim’s funds are stored.
In the second phase, another scammer posing as a representative from the victim’s bank informs them that their accounts have been breached by a
foreign hacker. The victims are then advised to transfer their funds into a “safe” third-party account to protect their savings. The method of transfer suggested usually involves wire transfers, cash, or cryptocurrencies, and the transfers are often directed to overseas accounts.
The third and final stage involves further manipulation where the scammer, pretending to be from a credible government agency like the Federal Reserve, contacts the victim to finalize the deceit. They may use fake official documents to alleviate any suspicions from the victim.
THE FBI HAS ISSUED ADVICE TO HELP THE PUBLIC PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM FALLING VICTIM TO SUCH SCAMS:
• Avoid clicking on unsolicited popups, links in text messages, and email attachments.
• Do not follow instructions to call phone numbers provided in unsolicited messages.
• Refrain from downloading software or allowing remote access to your computer at the request of an unknown individual.
• Be aware that the U.S. government will never ask for transfers via wire, cryptocurrency, or prepaid gift cards.
This scam is part of a broader trend of tech support scams that have cost victims across the nation more than $500 million since 2023. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is an available resource where victims can report these scams.
Timely reporting increases the chances of recovering lost funds and can help prevent further victimization. For those who suspect they might be a target of the “Phantom Hacker” scam or similar frauds, it is crucial to report the incident immediately to local law enforcement and the FBI via IC3 at ic3. gov.

New North Scottsdale Fire Station Approved
Artist renderings courtesy of Scottsdale Public Art
A UNANIMOUS SCOTTSDALE CITY COUNCIL VOTE ON APRIL 16 APPROVED THE ALLOCATION OF $11.1 MILLION FOR A STATE-OF-THE-ART FIRE STATION, FIRE STATION 612, NEAR HAYDEN ROAD AND LOOP 101. This move is a key part of a strategy to improve emergency response times in an area of North Scottsdale that’s experienced rapid residential and commercial growth.
The funding is part of a bond package approved by voters in 2019 which earmarked money for the renovation and construction of several fire stations. Although the project’s cost has edged slightly above the initially projected $10.5 million, the overrun was offset by a transfer from a fund allocated for updating emergency response equipment.
The fire station, to be sited at 18455 N. Hayden Rd., stands on land donated by Axon as part of a development
agreement following their purchase of former state land. Addressing earlier concerns from the Stonebrook II community about the potential for the building to loom over homes, the single-story structure’s design ensures a harmonious fit with its surroundings.
According to the project details, Fire Station No. 612 will encompass a 13,819 square-foot new building, featuring 12 dorm rooms and three apparatus bays, to accommodate the growing needs of the fire department. The architectural services contract, awarded on August 24, 2021, contributed to a final estimated cost of around $11.8 million for the project.
This strategic placement of the new facility is in response to the fire department’s goal of achieving a four-minute response time, an objective that has been challenged by the recent surge in development within the region. The station’s location was chosen to place firefighters closer to the geographic center of the area they serve, providing
faster and more efficient service to the community.
In addition to the functional role of Fire Station 612, Scottsdale Public Art is adding a creative touch. In collaboration with Maria Salenger of Jones Studio, the station will feature exterior art panels with cut-out patterns forming half of the Maltese Cross, symbolizing the Scottsdale Fire Department’s badge. This design, incorporating hand-drawn elements of native plants, allows the sunlight to cast dynamic images of the badge throughout the day and year, adding a unique visual element to the station.
Despite some projects from the bond package exceeding their budgets — most notably the fire and police training center, which soared from an advertised $4.2 million to over $20 million — Fire Station 612 reflects careful planning and budgeting. No public comments were made against the project at the recent council meeting, suggesting a community alignment with the goals and execution of this essential public safety investment.
Scottsdale to Enhance First Responder Readiness with Modernized Training Facility
Photo courtesy of city of Scottsdale
SCOTTSDALE’S FIRST RESPONDERS ARE POISED FOR A SIGNIFICANT BOOST IN TRAINING CAPABILITIES AS THE CITY EMBARKS ON AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT TO UPGRADE THE TOM HONTZ POLICE AND FIRE TRAINING FACILITY. The modernization effort, funded by three voter-approved bond projects from 2019, will equip the facility with advanced infrastructure designed to sharpen the skills of the city’s police and fire departments.
Originally designed to accommodate 215 police officers, the Hontz Facility now serves a combined force of 662 sworn and civilian personnel. The current infrastructure, featuring a nine-lane indoor shooting range and a live fire shoot house, has become insufficient, compelling the city to hold mandatory police modular training at alternate locations.
Set to be completed in early 2025, the upgraded facility will introduce a series of new features, including a multiple-story burn tower, providing firefighters with a realistic environment to practice tackling high-rise fires. An on-site vehicle training track will be installed to improve pursuit and emergency driving tactics, and an indoor shooting range will offer a controlled setting for officers to enhance their marksmanship.
Further developments at the facility will cater to specialized training needs, such as areas dedicated to technical rescue operations and aircraft rescue firefighting, ensuring that Scottsdale’s emergency crews are prepared for a broad spectrum of rescue scenarios.
Strategically located just south of the Scottsdale border in Tempe, near Miller and Curry roads, the facility’s expansion will significantly bolster the preparedness of the region’s first responders.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MAYOR Water Conservation Successes and Future Plans
By Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega
DEAR SCOTTSDALE FAMILIES,
For decades, Scottsdale Water broadcasted this message: Use Water Wisely. Recently, council took an extra step, offering cash incentives, so that residents who reduce water consumption can lower their water bill. We will continue to explore every way everyone can conserve and save money.
Conservation is key, as we balance living in the Sonoran Desert, protecting our water resources, and enhancement of our quality of life. The city of Scottsdale has invested billions of dollars in treatment facilities, and we are prepared for all future challenges.
Scottsdale has a robust water conservation program, which offers rebates, water efficiency workshops, free outdoor water efficiency checks, and access to WaterSmart – a user friendly website portal where customers can view and manage their individual water account. Learn more at scottsdaleaz.gov/water.
Scottsdale Water also hosts a Citizen Water Academy on a regular basis. The five-week course takes participants inside state-of-the-art facilities, demonstrates daily operations from lab functions
to water main repair, and explains all facets of water operations, planning, and policies.
Last year, the residential grass conversion rebate was increased from $1 to $2 per square-foot for a maximum of $5,000. Residents, so far, have voluntarily removed more than 401,000 square feet of grass, which saves the city millions of gallons of water.
Scottsdale Water has a diverse water portfolio including from Salt River Project, Central Arizona Project (CAP), ground water, and a new source — recycled water. Since 2019, Scottsdale Water has operated ultrafiltration, ozone, reverse osmosis, and sanitizing ultraviolet rays at our water treatment facilities. Our facilities can purify up to 20-million gallons of reclaimed water per day. This ultra-pure water is injected, banked below ground in Scottsdale aquafers, for later use.
The northern two-thirds of Scottsdale relies on Central Arizona Project (CAP) water, which is extracted at the Water Campus. Over the last 24-years, the decline of the mighty Colorado River due to drought has been alarming. Triggered by drought, in 2021, Scottsdale and nine Valley cities tightened conservation and delivery limitations according to a mutual pact with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
In 2021, upon taking office, I was shocked to learn that for years, the city of Scottsdale lost nearly 68 million gallons per year of CAP water by selling bulk water to truckers who hauled it to dry-lot “wildcat” subdivisions in the county. For comparison, Scottsdale Water provides 65 million gallons per day to residents, businesses, hospitals, and schools. Scottsdale lost over one day of water to the unincorporated county. As mayor, I acted immediately to halt the loss of precious water.
Council took action to halt the sale of 68 million gallons of CAP water, wrongly exported to “wildcat” subdivisions in the county. We won a frivolous lawsuit, and admittedly, I took a lot of “heat” from outsiders. After months without access, outsiders eventually got the legislature to pass an interim solution, which excludes Scottsdale CAP water and ends in December 2025. I credit and thank colleagues for protecting Scottsdale residents.
Until next time, please hydrate!
David D. Ortega is a professional architect, 45 year resident of Scottsdale, and serves as the mayor of Scottsdale.

City News Scottsdale 101 Citizen Academy Graduates Forge Path in Civic Engagement
By Sondra Barr
Photos by Elizabeth Reich
THE SCOTTSDALE 101 CITIZEN ACADEMY, A CORNERSTONE OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND CIVIC UNDERSTANDING, CELEBRATES THE GRADUATION OF ITS LATEST CLASS ON MAY 14. The academy, known for fostering knowledgeable and engaged citizens, has left a profound impact on this year’s participants, preparing them to take active roles in their community.
Darryl Komesu, a retired resident of 15 years, joined the academy to gain a deeper understanding of city-level governance. “The class has met my expectations,” Komesu says, reflecting on his newfound insight into how various groups within the city interact. The water conservation session particularly resonated with him, emphasizing the city’s proactive steps in sustainability.
For Elizabeth Reich, a retired nonprofit leader with a tenure at Make-A-Wish Arizona, the program demystified the mechanics of Scottsdale’s government. “It’s made me feel more confident to reach out to city leaders,” Reich shares, expressing her concern for Scottsdale’s growth and its impact on
community lifestyle. A bus tour and discussions with the city manager provided a real-world context that enhanced her comprehension of city operations.
Participant George Spatola, who’s in construction design and sales, has witnessed Scottsdale’s evolution over five decades, notes the academy’s role in equipping him to address community concerns proactively. “Now I feel confident bringing [neighbors’] suggestions to the water department,” Spatola says, underlining the program’s practical impact on participating citizens.
The curriculum’s diversity is intentional, encompassing an overview of local government operations, public works, community services, and emergency services. Interactive experiences and dynamic learning sessions form the crux of the academy’s approach, marrying theory with practice. Each of the eight sessions uncovers new layers as to what it takes to operate Scottsdale effectively.
This season’s academy included dialogue with key Scottsdale figures including Mayor David Ortega, City Manager Jim Thompson, Fire Chief Tom Shannon, Acting City Auditor Lai Cluff, City Clerk Ben Lane, and City Treasurer Sonia Andrews.
While participants’ motivations for attending the academy are varied, the catalyst for Spatola’s attendance was fueled by his nieces and nephews, who wanted him to get in front of the city and bring back the popular Mighty Mud Mania event. “As I spoke with city staff, they suggested I join the Recreation Board. I applied both to that board and the Neighborhood Board, which I was chosen for. At my first meeting there was a presentation on the academy, and I knew I had to participate,” he says.
As for future enhancements to the academy, participants like Komesu and Reich advocate for more time to digest the information and engage in discussions, suggesting this could enhance the already robust learning experience.
As the graduates step into their roles as informed citizens, the academy’s influence is clear. It equips participants with the confidence to engage with city leaders and motivates long-time residents to reinvigorate their community involvement.
The free program, held yearly in the spring, is open to residents, business owners, and city employees. For more information, visit scottsdaleaz.gov/citizenservice/city-government-101.

Cocktail connoisseurs now have a unique lounge to explore in Scottsdale. The Goose opened its doors on April 26 at the Mercado del Lago plaza, next to Crust Simply Italian at 8300 Hayden Rd.
The Goose revives the speakeasy experience with a beautifully renovated space that combines elegance and intimacy. Guests are welcomed into an atmosphere of intimate seating areas, candlelit tables, and décor that boasts Art Deco elements, including sleek geometricpatterned wallpaper, bold gold accents, and a black and white marbled floor. The lounge accommodates up to 42 guests, for a cozy and exclusive vibe.
The beverage program features classic cocktails such as the Vesper Martini, Clover Club, and Vieux Carré, along with innovative new creations by the skilled bar team. Highlights from the new offerings include:
The Down Comforter: Smoked Wagon bourbon, Amaro Lucano Anniversario, pistachio orgeat, and Australian coffee bitters.
OnlyFeathers: Platinum vodka, fresh passionfruit, and lemon juice, topped with Prosecco.
Take a Gander: Japanese whiskey, plum sake, pomegranate tea syrup, dry vermouth, and clarified milk punch.
In addition to a thoughtfully curated spirits selection that features whiskey flights and new pours, The Goose offers Goose Bumps—two shots of premium vodka accompanied by two portions of caviar, providing a unique tasting experience.
The food menu, crafted by Crust Simply Italian’s kitchen, includes a variety of unique shareable plates such as tangerinespiced olives, fried calamari, a charcuterie board, select pizzas, and desserts.
“As a sister concept to The Ostrich and Blue Heron, you will see many similarities, however The Goose will stand on its own with many differences like the original decor, elevated wine list, separate food menu and of course some newly creative cocktails,” said Michael Merendino owner of Crust Restaurant Group.
The Crust Restaurant Group, which operates Crust Simply Italian restaurants, Crust Pizzerias, and two other cocktail lounges—The Ostrich and Blue Heron— owns and operates The Goose. This new venture expands the group’s portfolio to eight establishments, with additional openings planned in Mesa later this year, including another Crust Simply Italian, a dessert shop, and a cocktail bar.

WRAP, WANDER, WOW
Create a wearable nature bracelet.
Photos by Shannon Carrillo
Who needs a jewelry store when Mother Nature offers a treasure trove of dazzling gems? This simple yet fascinating activity is all about decking out your wrists with the vibrant colors and interesting textures that you can only find outdoors. It’s a DIY project that brings art, nature, and discovery together in the form of a wearable piece of art!
WHAT YOU NEED
• Clear packing tape (1/2- or 1-inch wide)
• A variety of natural treasures (flowers, leaves, etc.)
GETTING CRAFTY
1. Take a length of tape and wrap it around the wrist with the sticky side facing out, to form a sticky canvas.
2. Embark on a nature walk and scout for small, colorful objects: flowers, leaves, seeds, the more diverse, the better!
3. Decorate your tape bracelet by pressing your collected items onto the sticky surface. As you stick each item to the bracelet, observe and discuss what you see, touch, and smell.
4. Consider themes like a single color range or a burst of multiple hues to personalize your nature bracelet.
THE LEARNING JOURNEY
As your children fill their tape with natural elements, they’ll naturally start to sort, categorize, and admire the diversity in nature. They might even begin asking questions about the flora and fauna that surround them, turning a simple craft into an impromptu biology lesson.
Kids
WHY IT’S AWESOME
This activity is a hit for several reasons:
• It’s budget-friendly – all you need is the great outdoors and a strip of tape!
• It’s inclusive and adaptable, making it a perfect fit for children and adults of any age.
• You can do it year-round, with each season bringing its own unique materials to the table.
• It’s sneaky learning – as kids engage in this sensory-rich activity, they’re exploring science, art, math, and more without even realizing it.
So, next time you head out for a stroll in the park or a hike in the woods, or even your own backyard, grab that packing tape and add an extra layer of fun and learning to your journey with nature bracelets.

MAPPING THE WAY TO COMMUNITY CONNECTION IN SCOTTSDALE NORTH
By Sondra Barr
Over the last three decades, Scott Gaertner, a prominent local Realtor, has not only sold homes but helped shaped and cement the community identity of Scottsdale North. His passion for this unique corner of the Valley has led to a series of innovative projects aimed at enhancing local identity and supporting small businesses. The latest in these ventures is the cutting-edge CSN Map program, a digital tool designed to
transform how residents and visitors interact with the Scottsdale North landscape and its businesses.
Gaertner has been instrumental in shaping the area from the beginning. His journey began with significant roles in developing key lifestyle communities such as Desert Mountain, Terravita, and Winfield. However, Gaertner’s passion extends beyond selling homes. He is committed to fostering a tight-knit community and boosting local businesses
that are often overshadowed by the city’s rapid growth and the proliferation of big box stores.
Scottsdale North, a community known for its stunning beauty, holds a special place in Gaertner’s heart. “I’ve always seen the potential here—not just for real estate, but for a thriving community spirit,” Gaertner says. “In my experience, the more people understand the area, the more they love it.”
“Scottsdale North’s small businesses
often remain hidden treasures, overshadowed by their limited exposure,” he explains. “Scottsdale stretches nearly 30 miles, and we’re located at its northernmost point. We’re in a rural area, far from the hustle and bustle of the city center and where the city council and chamber of commerce are focused. That’s why I’m working on creating a ‘Scottsdale North Chamber of Commerce,’ of sorts, to represent our part of town.”

Cover Story
The sequence of innovations started with “Scottsdale North News,” the paper you’re reading now, which became a platform for community voices and local issues. It was followed by Connecting Scottsdale North, a digital hub aimed at fostering stronger community ties. Adding to this, the Connecting Scottsdale North Gift Card was introduced to encourage local spending, supporting businesses struggling with the economic impacts of the pandemic and the shift to online shopping.
Yet, Gaertner didn’t stop there. Collaborating with team member Kate Duffy, he recently launched CSN Map, accessible through the Connecting Scottsdale North website. This tool is a first-of-its-kind interactive map offering an aerial view of everything from lifestyle communities and shopping centers to golf courses, medical offices, and HOAs. “It’s a gateway to discover the pulse of Scottsdale North,” Duffy says.
For residents and visitors alike, CSN Map offers a comprehensive look at what Scottsdale North has to offer. Whether you’re in search of a new dining spot, a reliable health and beauty service, or even a new home, this tool can guide you to the perfect destination. The interactive map isn’t just a static, 1,000-foot view; with just a click, you can drill down for a deeper dive into categories such as:
Shopping and Dining: With locations for over 14 shopping centers and 40 food and drink options that can further be filtered down by type, users can find the best places to shop and dine, including those that accept the Scottsdale North Gift Card.
Health Services: Detailed listings for doctors and medical practices and medical centers ensure healthcare is never more than a few clicks away.
Lifestyle and Leisure: From fitness and training centers to religious institutions and public and private golf courses, every aspect of lifestyle is covered.
Local Amenities: The map covers essential services like health and beauty services, personal and professional services, and even spots for animal care.
A COMPREHENSIVE
LOOK INTO COMMUNITIES
One of the standout features of the CSN Map is its ability to provide in-depth information about residential communities within Scottsdale North.
This is especially valuable for potential homebuyers or new residents looking to find a place that fits their lifestyle. The map details:
HOAs and Lifestyle Communities: Users can explore 16 communities in total, including 12 lifestyle communities, each with its own unique features.
Community Amenities: Detailed filters allow users to discover which communities have amenities like social organizations, clubhouses, dog parks, and fitness centers. This includes specific interests such as pickleball courts, hiking trails, and extensive information on pool and spa facilities.
Real Estate Listings: Dive into active listings within each community.
INTERACTIVE FEATURES FOR ENHANCED USER EXPERIENCE
CSN Map is a dynamic tool that invites interaction. Users can click on any point of interest to receive detailed information, including small business spotlight videos, to get to know the local business owners and their stories. These spotlights are part of Gaertner’s broader effort to support and promote local businesses through various initiatives.
A TOOL FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW
Gaertner’s vision for the CSN Map program is not just about addressing current needs but also anticipating future growth. “As Scottsdale North evolves, we want CSN Map to evolve with it. We are constantly updating and refining the map to ensure it meets the needs of the community and stays current with new developments,” says Gaertner.
The program also promises to revolutionize real estate marketing in the area by providing potential homebuyers with a detailed overview of what each community has to offer. “Whether it’s finding a home near a top-rated golf course or a neighborhood with the best fitness options or social opportunities, or active listings, CSN provides that insight,” Gaertner adds.
As CSN Map gains traction, Gaertner and Duffy are reaching out for community feedback to enhance its features and to help highlight more businesses.
“Everything we’ve done, from the newspaper to this map, has been about building connections,” Gaertner says. “It’s about creating a sense of place and helping people love Scottsdale North as much as I do.”
With such comprehensive efforts and innovative thinking, Gaertner continues to redefine what it means to be a community-oriented Realtor, making Scottsdale North not just a location, but a destination to discover, experience, explore, and cherish.

For over 23 years, the Foothills Caring Corps has served as a cornerstone of support in the Carefree, Cave Creek, and neighboring
areas, allowing elderly residents to age in place with grace, safety, and independence. This vital nonprofit is a lifeline for many, fostering a strong sense of community belonging among its clientele.
Through the dedication of its volunteer workforce, the Foothills Caring Corps offers a broad array of essential services. These include delivering mobile meals, providing non-emergency medical transportation, making friendly home visits, assisting with handyman tasks, and managing both a recreational van program and a Mobility Loan closet. Last year alone, the agency’s volunteers made over 28,000 touchpoints across the community, highlighting the critical nature of their work.
“Our mission goes beyond providing transactional services; it’s about creating a community where every individual feels valued and supported,” says Brent Downs, executive director of the agency. “We are immensely grateful for the tireless dedication of
our volunteers, the unwavering support of our donors, and the invaluable partnerships we’ve forged within the community.”
In 2022, the corps organized 3,327 recreational van trips, delivered 20,130 mobile meals, facilitated 2,955 nonemergency medical trips, and aided over 1,150 individuals through their mobility loan closet. Each number not only quantifies the help provided but also symbolizes the countless personal interactions and moments of relief provided to those in need.
“We are immensely grateful for the tireless dedication of our volunteers, the unwavering support of our donors, and the invaluable partnerships we’ve forged within the community,” says Downs.
Melanie Campbell, Director of Community Impact, adds, “We have neighbors, volunteers, and supporters from your neighborhood, and we are hopeful that you’ll join them in making a difference.”
Volunteers drive and assist group outings such as shopping, luncheons, restaurant gatherings, theater performances, concerts, library activities and more.
The Foothills Caring Corps invites community members to become part of their mission. Contributions, whether of time or financial support, make a significant impact on the lives of many.

Scottsdale Police Foundation Launches Community-Centered Initiatives

he Scottsdale Police Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) and fostering stronger ties between law enforcement and the community, is launching several impactful initiatives.
“A strong police department is integral to the quality of life we enjoy in Scottsdale,” says Debbie Steinhauer, founder of the Scottsdale Police Foundation. “Through the foundation, we aim to fortify the foundation of our community by addressing the four pillars of our mission: youth, officer wellness, community engagement, and crime prevention.”
Driven by a desire to uplift the youth of Scottsdale, the foundation has collaborated closely with SPD to identify areas where additional support and resources are needed. One such initiative is “the closet” program, located at Coronado High School but serving the entirety of the Scottsdale school
district. This program, led by Scottsdale Police Officer Alvin Pease in conjunction with social workers and teachers, provides essential resources to students in need, reinforcing the values of community support and engagement. Moreover, the currently open logo design contest, available to the children of Scottsdale School District, highlights the organization’s commitment to tailoring programs to the evolving needs of Scottsdale youth.
“We are thrilled to be spearheading initiatives that directly impact our community and strengthen the bonds between law enforcement and the residents of Scottsdale,” says Committee Chair of the Community Outreach Committee at the Scottsdale Police Foundation Kelly Kerbs-Riggle. “Through partnerships with the Scottsdale Police Department and local organizations, we’re actively supporting programs like the Police Athletic League and ‘The Closet,’ while also exploring new avenues to enhance community safety and engagement.”
Individuals and businesses in Scottsdale are encouraged
to get involved and support the foundation’s efforts. Whether through financial contributions or active participation in foundation events and programs, community support plays a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Scottsdale Police Foundation.
Looking ahead, the foundation is committed to expanding its impact through initiatives such as the Officer Grant Request Program, generously kickstarted by a donation received at a recent breakfast event. This program aims to reimburse officers for personal expenditures made to assist community members in need, embodying the spirit of service that defines our law enforcement. Other long-term goals include further expansion of PAL programs across all schools in the district, continued support for “The Closet” initiative, and the establishment of scholarships for youth pursuing careers in law enforcement.

It was a picture-perfect day out at Grayhawk Golf Club for Hospice of the Valley’s 2024 Pro-Am Golf Tournament, presented by Cigna Healthcare. The March 28 event in Scottsdale raised over $53,000 for the nonprofit’s charity care programs.
“It’s a tournament that is meaningful for all players. It’s a mission of love; it’s a mission of dignity’ and I love to support it,” says sponsor Tim Louis, who competes every year with wife Amy in memory of his parents.
Volunteer tournament chairman Jay Hoselton started the event in 1998, raising more than $1 million in the years since to help provide compassionate care to thousands of patients and families in need. As a nonprofit, Hospice of the Valley turns no one away and is able to care for all, thanks to community generosity and “friendraisers” such as this.
“As long as I can stand and walk, I’m going to keep running this tournament,” he says. “It’s just a great group with a lot of great people and a great day for a great charity.”
“What they do in the community is just amazing,” adds golfer Jenni Veretto with APRIA, Part of the Owens & Minor Family, “and we are grateful that we get to be partners with them to help take care of their patients.”
Pete Chuchro, Cigna’s general manager for Arizona, echoes that sentiment: “It’s an important mission that brings everybody together.”
This year’s tournament showcased top players from the Southwest Section of the PGA and boasted a $20,000 professional purse. Pro Marty Jertson shot a 68/68 for a total 136 to take home the $4,600 top prize!

Hello Neighbor!
HI, MY NAME IS… Evan Gotanda.
I’VE LIVED IN NORTH SCOTTSDALE FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… anything I could possibly need is within walking distance of my house, or a short drive away. All the people I have come across so far have been very friendly and living across the street from arboleda, the restaurant where I’m head chef, makes for a very easy commute.
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… work, work, work. I’ll usually get to arboleda in the morning and start prepping for the day, doing office work, etc. I’ll wait for my sous chefs to get in, go over anything they need to know for the day, and then finish setting up the line for service. Once my service is done, I’ll walk back home, have dinner with my wife, and catch up on our favorite TV shows.
MY FAMILY IS… very important to me, though it’s just my wife and me here. Being away from family is difficult, but getting to visit them and exploring the cities they live in gives us something to look forward to.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… sweets. My wife and I have quite a sweet tooth, especially for ice cream.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Miracle,” the true story of Herb Brooks, the player-turned-coach who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory. A lot of people don’t know I played hockey growing up, and I find it so cool that it really happened.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a marine biologist.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… there’s too many to choose from, but most likely something by Bad Religion or Dr. Dre.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… Mitch Rosenthal, one of the chefs and co-owners at arboleda. He still helps us prep and will work the line with us even to this day. He’s constantly pushing.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… probably at work when hanging out with Mitch and my wife. My wife Ramona, arboleda’s pastry chef, has worked with Mitch, Steven, and Bjorn (the other two coowners) longer than I have. Typically, when we’re all together, there’s a lot of laughing.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… having a nice relaxing day off. Going to the Asian markets in Mesa to get snacks and then just hanging out.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… any local food bank that is helping to end food insecurity in the Valley: Phoenix Rescue Mission, United Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Mary’s, to name a few.
MY LIFE IS… full of surprises. Working in the restaurant industry, you never know what is going to happen. Just
recently in the middle of service, the fire alarm went off for about 20 minutes. In the middle of that, our oven door broke and wouldn’t stay shut.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… not necessarily a gift but before we left San Francisco, my wife and I got married. We had a great wedding, and it was thanks to so many people pitching in to help out in some form.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Japan. I’ve gone once before and am going again later this year. I love visiting there.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… someone a long time ago told me that no matter what you do in your life or career, strive to be the best at it.

What the NAR Settlement Means for Scottsdale North Buyers and Sellers
By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker
Ihadn’t planned to write this article until we knew more about the National Association of Realtors (NAR) settlement, which is pending approval. But the sheer amount of misinformation and confusion surrounding this topic has made me rethink that stance. Much of the media has gotten this so staggeringly wrong I felt it was essential to address the issue accurately and guide you through what this settlement might mean for buyers and sellers in Scottsdale North. With 40 years of experience in real estate and as the founder of Scottsdale’s first exclusive buyer’s agency, I believe I have the perspective needed to shed light on this complex situation.
WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR
The recent $418 million settlement by the NAR in an antitrust lawsuit has been a hot topic. A federal jury found that the NAR and several large real estate brokerages conspired to inflate agent commissions artificially. This raises a lot of questions, and it’s crucial to address them with clarity and accurate information.
Here’s what we know: Buyer broker compensation will no longer be displayed on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Additionally, buyers are now required to sign a Buyer Representation Agreement, which includes the buyer broker’s compensation. This move should lead to greater transparency in the real estate process,
as many people didn’t understand how agents were compensated before. That would be a very good thing.
However, this shift also raises questions about how buyer agents will get paid. Traditionally, sellers generally paid buyer agents through the commission split, allowing buyers to have representation without paying out of pocket. With the new agreement, buyers may need to consider how they’ll compensate their agents, which can be a burden for first-time buyers or those with limited resources. This isn’t as much of a concern for buyers in Scottsdale North, who typically have more resources, but it’s a significant issue for many others.
HOW WILL THIS AFFECT YOUR USING A BUYER AGENT?
An interesting perspective to consider is what happened when the Northwest Multiple Listing Service (NWMLS), covering Seattle and parts of Washington State, pre-empted this lawsuit in 2022 by allowing sellers to pay buyer agents $0. Despite this change, most listings still paid buyers’ agents 2 to 3%, suggesting that while the industry might evolve, there could be ways for agents to continue receiving compensation. Whether this trend will apply across the board following the NAR settlement is yet to be seen.
Given all these uncertainties, if you’re considering buying a home and want the support of a buyer’s agent, it might be wise to make your move before June. After that, the landscape could shift, requiring buyers to navigate new compensation structures.
I’M HERE TO HELP
My background in real estate provides a unique perspective on this issue. In 1990, I launched Scottsdale’s first exclusive buyer’s real estate agency, Buyers Resource, at a time when everyone in a real estate transaction typically represented the seller. Our consumer-friendly approach made us media favorites, with most news channels and papers showcasing our work. I expected this to shake up the real estate world and bring about swift changes, but the transformation turned out to be slower and less dramatic than I had hoped. This firsthand experience with industry changes that directly impacted how buyers were represented and compensated gives me insight into how to navigate the current uncertainty.
Given the complexity of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) settlement, it’s clear that navigating the changing landscape of real estate requires a steady guide. While this article has aimed to shed light on the settlement, there’s more to consider as the details unfold. If you’re buying or selling a home in Scottsdale North, you need to stay informed and adapt to the evolving norms in real estate. I will keep you in the loop through this paper as we progress but consult a knowledgeable local agent for specifics.
To help guide buyers through these uncertain times, I’ve written a book, “What Every Person Needs to Know About Buying a Home in the Post-NAR Settlement Era.” My publisher tells me it will be out very soon and it is designed to help you stay ahead of the curve and make informed decisions. If you would like to preorder a copy and get a discount, go to scottsbuyerbook.com to secure your book today! Or if you don’t feel like reading, just give me a call!

On the Road Again! Are you Ready for Vacation?
By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks
It’s that time of year again. Vacation and adventure time! To truly be ready for that trip, you might want to update or establish an estate plan before you hit the road. Here are a few things to consider.
1. REVIEW AND UPDATE YOUR EXISTING ESTATE PLAN. A “set it and forget it” estate plan is not a great idea. We need to review and update the plan as our families evolve and circumstances change. You may need to update who would be in charge of your estate or change how your beneficiaries receive their inheritance.
2. GET A WILL, TRUST, AND POWERS OF ATTORNEY IN PLACE IF YOU DON’T HAVE THEM. Clients regularly tell me what peace of mind they have since completing their plan. Don’t turn to your spouse on the plane and say, “We really should have done our wills.” Let your upcoming vacation serve as the impetus to put a plan in place!
3. REVIEW TITLES AND BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file a probate court proceeding. Also, this is a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans to be sure you’ve named the right people. Once you’ve done so, you will
know your estate plan will work as you intended.
4. SECURE OR REVIEW HEALTHCARE DOCUMENTS. Everyone over the age of 18 needs certain documents (including your children who have just become adults). They are: 1) General Durable Power of Attorney, which permits someone to be your agent to handle finances and legal matters if you cannot; 2) Power of Attorney for Health Care, which gives another person legal authority to make health care decisions (including life and death decisions) for you if you are unable to make them for yourself; 3) HIPPA Authorizations, which give written consent for doctors to discuss your medical situation with others, including family members; and 4) Advanced Directive or Living Will to let your loved ones know what you want (and don’t want) at the end of life.
5. ORGANIZE YOUR ACCOUNTS AND DOCUMENTS. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found, and your trustee or executor can locate the assets in your estate and can access what they need to administer your estate.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST: HAVE A GREAT TIME! You are likely going to come back safe and sound, but you’ll have great peace of mind knowing that everything’s in place in case something unexpected happens. I’m always happy to help clients put their estate plan in place before a trip. You can book our no-charge initial consultation by calling the office at 603-375-6752.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
Since COVID, there has been an explosion of depression, anxiety, drug abuse, and many other mental health issues as people were under incredible stress and isolated in their homes. The percentage of people over 12 years old diagnosed with anxiety increased by four-fold since COVID with up to 37% of the population having a diagnosis of anxiety and many of those taking antianxiety medications.
Depression likewise increased by a factor of four from about 7% of the population to almost 31% of the population. Many folks with anxiety and depression turn to drugs, particularly alcohol or stimulants to help treat their symptoms. This only adds to the problem as then there is an addiction to deal with also! Did you know that many of those with depression or anxiety don’t get good relief from medication? Maybe this is

about 15 years now. Dr. Sosnowski has been at the forefront in Arizona, starting with MeRT therapy in October 2020 and getting the best results from MeRT in the entire country utilizing her background in functional medicine. MeRT has a proven track record for PTSD (it’s not only in veterans remember!), TBI (brain dysfunction from head trauma – giving anger issues, confusion, depression, anxiety, insomnia to name a few symptoms), depression, anxiety, insomnia, bipolar disorder, “brain fog”(forgetfulness), chemo-brain (yes, almost every chemo patient has some brain dysfunction), cognitive impairment, post-stroke brain dysfunction, autism, and autoimmune diseases of the brain – PANDAs, ALS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease – MeRT therapy seems to shut down inflammation in the brain, really improving the function of the brain!
MeRT was initially tested in military veterans with TBI and PTSD and the results were profound. Not only did the veterans significantly improve symptoms by 60 to 80%, but many of those using drugs or alcohol to ease their symptoms were able to stop their drug of abuse after two weeks of MeRT therapy without any withdrawal symptoms. Today MeRT
is the only treatment that the military recommends for PTSD and TBI.
Why haven’t you heard about this? Well, most likely because it works! The pharmaceutical and insurance companies will not make money using this therapy, so they don’t want you to know about it! Also, since it is still relatively new in technology terms, many of the diagnoses are not covered by insurance yet.
Dr. Sosnowski, the physician behind MVP Medical Care has been focused on brain health – getting our brain working it’s best from whatever is ailing us - for the last 10 years. She’s also a functional medicine specialist – so getting you off drugs and 100% back to yourself through testing, supplements, and lifestyle changes is the other half of her practice. She teaches that you have control over whatever medical issues you are dealing with currently!

Why Your Knee Still Hurts (and How to Finally Get Relief)
By Dr. Matthew Hernandez, knee pain expert at Ethos Integrative Medicine
Does this sound like you?
You’ve seen everyone for knee pain and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried ice packs and heat compresses, but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…
Unfortunately, for many on the quest to conquering discomfort, their only option from healthcare providers is to “wait until it gets worse.” Here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can actually get relief now.
A JOINT EFFORT
Jessie, who had been dealing with knee pain for six months, came to us for this exact reason: She didn’t want to resort to temporary cortisone injections, daily sleeping pills, or pain medication. She wanted a long-term solution.
“The worst part was not being able to do the activities I loved — running and cycling.” Despite three months of physical therapy, her improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also told her she needed to wait for the injury to get worse to consider surgery.
SOLVING THE MENISCUS MYSTERY
Recognizing Jessie’s frustration, we swiftly acted, confirming that a torn labrum injury in her hip was increasing stress into her meniscus.
We explained to Jessie how she had fallen into what we call “The Gap” in conventional medicine, and how regenerative medicine bridges this gap. Jessie chose to
Dynamite Smiles Dentistry
partner with us and underwent two treatments. In just four weeks, her pain had improved significantly, allowing her to return to the sports she loved: “I’m back to riding three to four times a week, and even signed up for a Ragnar race that my friends talked me into now that I’m running again!”
HOW OUR DEEP DIVE BRIDGES
“THE
GAP”
Jessie’s story is not uncommon; applying a one-size-fits-all approach left her without clear guidance or solutions. You don’t need to wait until it gets worse!
With our comprehensive Deep Dive (which includes our Pain Profile, 57-Point Knee Inspection, Precision Knee Scan, and Diagnostic Mapping Technique — all of which were used to confirm Jessie’s pain and guide her treatment strategy), we’ll not only get you an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you!) but will also provide you with a personalized treatment plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“Monkey Man”
Faith and vengeance collide as a man carries out his plot through modern day India.
Dev Patel has long proven his capabilities as a leading actor, but “Monkey Man” showcases his potential in an ambitious debut. At times, that ambition may overshadow what is achievable, both in action sequences and thematic complexity. The politics are somewhat muddled in their connection to India’s actual situation, although it’s clear Patel has noble intentions regarding the corruption intertwined with religion. Occasionally, the action becomes overly chaotic. Nevertheless, it’s difficult not to be charmed by the sheer delight of the cast’s commitment and the effort evident throughout the film. “Monkey Man” is a visually stunning movie that echoes the peak era of Jackie Chan—complete with bonecrunching stunts and spectacular falls.
“Love Lies Bleeding”
A bodybuilder and a gym employee form a relationship as they battle for their freedom against a local cult.
Sweat, blood, and sex are the foundational elements of Rose Glass’ humorously bizarre sophomore film, which pushes the envelope entirely. As expected, Kristen Stewart, Ed Harris, and the rest of the cast deliver top-tier performances in atypical roles. However, it’s Katy O’Brien who truly stands out with a nuanced and compelling portrayal that is both empathetic and frightening. The characters are driven to their most desperate and lowest points, yet despite the extreme circumstances, they retain a deeply human essence. The film is visually stunning, featuring gorgeously sickly-sweet imagery that conjures a somewhat fairytale vibe. For those who appreciate such a unique cinematic experience, this film will be a delight.
“The First Omen”
A nun’s faith is put to the test when she realizes a conspiracy of evil is afoot.
The makers of “The First Omen” spared
no effort, which is commendable for a belated prequel to a franchise that arguably should not have been extended. It unfolds slowly, featuring potent imagery and strong performances, particularly from Nell Tiger Free and Ralph Ineson. Unfortunately, its slow pace does not allow adequate time to develop several characters, who vanish for extended periods. The exploration of women’s autonomy and religion’s influence in the modern world presents an intriguing theme that lends the film a distinct identity. However, these aspects are diminished by the film’s prequel nature, preventing it from reaching its full potential. While it is ambitious for a studio horror film, especially in terms of scares and gore, it falls short of fully achieving its objectives.
ON NETFLIX
“Shirley”
A look at Shirley Chisholm’s unprecedented run for president in 1972.
Regina King is so compelling as the
title character that it’s difficult to truly dislike the movie despite its shortcomings beyond her performance. Nevertheless, one cannot help but wish that such an incredible figure were portrayed in a film that is bolder and more incisive in its storytelling. The film struggles initially by rapidly glossing over Chisholm’s tenure in Congress and fails to thoroughly explore the conflicts related to her political motivations and her faith, rendering a somewhat two-dimensional portrayal. Perhaps the intention was to celebrate her and her achievements; however, it still feels disappointing. This is particularly true given the filmmaking style, which is reminiscent of television and does not authentically represent the 1970s era.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How
To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain? You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.
Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration.
e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed.
is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What to Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
How to Get Rid of Sciatica Pain for Good
If you’re ready to get to the root cause of your sciatica, and want to get back to being active with con dence, and without painkillers or surgery, you may qualify for a complimentary “discovery visit” with a specialist. Getaway
Set on three pristine, rugged acres overlooking arguably the most striking, 360-degree view in all of Sedona and the protected preserve of Coconino National Forest, the breathtaking natural beauty of Red Rock Country is on full display at Ambiente Sedona, the city’s newest and most luxurious stay, dining, and wellness destination.
Debuting last year as the first of its kind in North America, the boutique landscape hotel boasts a distinctive design rooted in a profound reverence for the environment, with a focus on sustainable methods and organic, modern architecture that complements the surrounding topography and minimizes the impact on the land to seamlessly integrate into Sedona’s geological wonderland.
Upon arrival, guests are escorted by a personal valet to check in, relax in the lounge, and enjoy a complimentary glass of sparkling wine before hopping into an electric vehicle for a tour of the property before arriving at their own private Atrium, where the peaceful sound of gently flowing water is ever-present thanks to the natural waterways that snake between each structure.
Elevated above the ground by steel piers and constructed using floor-toceiling, bronze-tinted glass, and mattecharcoal and rusted metal, Ambiente’s 40 cubed-shaped Atriums reflect elegant minimalism from the outside, while contemporary, elemental interiors embody a lavish and tranquil hideaway through bespoke designed wallpaper, liveedge wood furnishings, moody lighting, cozy seating, and Earth-toned textiles.
A LANDSCAPE HOTEL
While all Atriums offer the same 576-square foot, king accommodations, the dramatic 360-degree panoramic views vary considerably as each Atrium has been expertly placed to maximize view corridors, whether that’s north to the surrounding Coconino National Forest or east and south to the Steamboat, Chimney, Coffee Pot, and Snoopy red rock formations. All Atriums also feature their own private rooftop decks with a secure staircase for the ultimate sunbathing and stargazing experience. Lounge seating, a roaring firepit, and a daybed, comfortable enough for sleeping alfresco, serve as a remote locale perched between the rugged terrain below and bright, beaming stars above thanks to the city of Sedona’s Dark Sky Association.
At the center of the property, a pool and spa is positioned contiguous to an open-air bar and poolside lounge that features the hotel’s signature restaurant, Forty1, helmed by Executive Chef Dave Duncan, a Northern Arizona native with an endearing appreciation for the Verde Valley and a steadfast commitment to showcasing its abundance through cuisine. Open to the public, Forty1 houses a full-service kitchen serving breakfast and dinner daily, as well as an indoor/outdoor bar that glows like a gemstone after sunset. Directly adjacent to the restaurant, an elevated deck features fire pits, an oversized chef’s table for large groups or private events, and cozy lounge seating; as well as a custom Airstream that has been transformed and reimagined into The Drifter, a separate culinary venue serving lunch and poolside fare daily.
Situated within the hotel’s two-story, biophilic lobby building is Velvet, an intimate, three-room spa where
ancient practices blend with innovative technologies to offer an unparalleled wellness experience. Specializing in treatments that integrate regionally sourced ingredients, Velvet’s offerings embody the transformative, healing and even mystical properties for which Sedona is widely revered, to improve health and well-being for guests.
With direct access to more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails in Sedona as well as premier rock climbing, outdoor adventure and recreational activities, there’s no need for an onsite fitness
center. Instead, the hotel encourages guests to explore the outdoors through its exclusive, on-site access to the Adobe Jack Trail system, where they can enjoy guided tours of the moderate 1.7-mile hike that connects to an additional seven miles of trails renowned for the picturesque scenery displayed along the way.
Ambiente is an adults-only hotel welcoming guests 18 years and older. Two Atriums are ADA compliant, making the hotel accessible to guests of all abilities. To book an upcoming stay or learn more, visit ambientesedona.com.
