Daughter Embraces Mom’s Hospice Journey
By Lin Sue Flood Image: Hospice of the Valley
As a nurse, Robin Benton is used to caring for people who are ill. But it’s different when your mother is the one who is sick.
Her mom, Charlotte Brewer, a former nurse herself, has multiple myeloma, a

rare type of blood cancer. In March 2024, the 80-year-old Peoria resident decided to stop curative treatments in favor of comfort care with Hospice of the Valley, where she worked for over 10 years, before retiring in 2007.
“I wasn’t doing so well a year ago and everyone in my family thought I only had a few more weeks,” Charlotte confessed. “But now, I’m doing great, going on walks and spending time with my husband and three daughters. People think hospice means giving up, but I know from professional and personal experience that’s not true. I’m still here, enjoying life.”
Robin was the one who suggested hospice care. “We were running all over the place for different treatments
and getting conflicting medical advice, and Mom was exhausted and stressed. Now, her amazing care team handles everything and she’s much happier.”
Charlotte’s Hospice of the Valley nurse, Kelly Langston, admires the way the family is living this stage of life with great intention, creating new ways to deepen their love for each other.
“They came up with an idea for a hug shirt,” shared Kelly. “Everyone in the family painted their arms then took turns hugging each other — stamping an imprint of encircled arms on the shirts. It’s a way to feel each other’s hugs even when they aren’t together.”
The family also made custom teddy bears at Build a Bear, with a tiny
speaker embedded in a paw that plays a recorded message from Charlotte when pressed. Robin blinks back tears every time she hears her mother’s voice: “Robin, you are one of the greatest gifts God has ever given us. I love you so very much. I am so proud of you.”
“I didn’t want to look back and wish I’d done this or that,” Robin says. “We are building memories every moment that we have. There will be no regrets.”
Hospice of the Valley serves people with chronic illness, including all stages of dementia, as well as those who need hospice care. To learn more, visit hov. org or call (602) 530-6900 anytime.

Deconstruction for Deduction
Property owners benefit from eco-friendly deconstruction with Repurposed Environmental Solutions.
By Sondra Barr
In a world increasingly attuned to the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship, Repurposed Environmental Solutions (RES) emerges as a pioneer. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, operating across Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington, champions a mission
to significantly reduce waste in the building industry by reimagining the fate of construction materials. Through the visionary leadership of Executive Director Devin Schulte, RES excels in the deconstruction of buildings, ensuring that materials destined for oblivion are instead salvaged, repurposed, and given a new lease on life.
Central to RES’s innovative approach is a blend of
environmental mission and financial incentive. By leveraging guidelines established by the IRS in 1922, which were designed to encourage the recycling of building materials, RES provides property owners the opportunity for financial return in the form of tax deductions for donating reusable materials. “We utilized the IRS’s guidelines and put it into a business to streamline their process,” explains RES Office Manager Vanity Delgadillo.
Photos by Kimberly Carrillo
The process of deconstruction at RES is closely tied to the IRS’s stringent appraisal requirements, ensuring that property owners receive accurate valuations for their donations. This is facilitated by independent IRS qualified appraisers, whose expertise and certification standards are rigorous.
“The minimum requirement for IRS qualified appraisers is a base of 20-plus years and so many certifications,” Delgadillo says, highlighting the thoroughness of the valuation process.
RES’s projects vary widely, from modest 800-square-foot renovations to large-scale 26,000-square-foot commercial demolitions. Regardless of size, each project is underpinned by the organization’s commitment to diverting reusable materials from landfills. This not only encompasses a wide range of materials — from concrete and metal to cabinets and windows — but also involves meticulous deconstruction techniques that prioritize the preservation of these items for future use for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Stardust Building Supplies, and others.
This process is streamlined into four straightforward steps, ensuring that each project is handled with the utmost efficiency and care.
Step 1: Initial Contact and Appraisal Planning
After reaching out to RES to express interest in their deconstruction services, RES explains the process to property owners and directs them to an IRS qualified appraiser for a walk though. This initial evaluation is key to understanding the potential tax benefits and setting the stage for a successful project.
Step 2: Scope of Work and Contract Agreement
Following the appraisal, the next step involves a detailed discussion on the scope of work. This includes determining the extent of deconstruction required, whether it’s a full building teardown or a selective deconstruction focusing on specific elements. A contract is then drawn up and signed, and the project is officially scheduled. This step ensures that both parties have a clear understanding of the work to be done, timelines, cost, and expectations.
Step 3: Deconstruction and Donation
With the groundwork laid, RES then proceeds with the deconstruction process, carefully dismantling the structure to salvage reusable materials. These materials, which range from structural elements to fixtures, are then prepared for donation or recycling. This step is where RES’s mission comes to life, as materials are diverted from landfills and given a second chance at usefulness, embodying the principles of sustainability and waste reduction.
Step 4: Paperwork and Donation Packet
The final step in the process underscores RES’s commitment to providing a comprehensive service. Once the project is completed and all reusable materials have been accounted for, RES finalizes all records related to the deconstruction and donation. Property owners are then provided with a donation packet, which includes all the necessary documentation for tax deduction purposes. This step not only signifies the completion of the physical work but also the financial and administrative closure of the project, offering clients peace of mind and the satisfaction of contributing to a more sustainable future.
What sets RES apart in the competitive landscape is not just its mission to protect the environment but also its operational excellence. The organization’s deconstruction services are marked by quality craftsmanship, experienced crews, and competitive pricing, ensuring that property owners receive both environmental and financial benefits.
The work of Repurposed Environmental Solutions in the realm of sustainable deconstruction is not only reshaping the industry but also providing a model for how environmental stewardship and financial incentives can work hand in hand. Central to their success is the understanding that each property is unique, with its value intricately tied to the real estate market’s dynamics. As Schulte emphasizes, the variability in properties underscores the bespoke nature of their work: “It’s all based on a real estate appraisal. No two houses are exactly the same or have the same value. It really is just all the information that the appraiser takes in and then they come up with a formula that gives it a salvage value.”
This meticulous attention to detail and commitment to personalized service ensure that each project not only contributes to reducing landfill waste but also maximizes the benefits for property owners. Through their innovative approach and dedication, Repurposed Environmental Solutions is a model for sustainable practices to transform our built environment, one deconstructed building at a time. Protecting Ourselves and Loved Ones from Financial Abuse
By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
Clients often ask how they can prevent loved ones from being the victims of fraud and abuse. For an answer, I turned to Kent Berk, with Berk Law Group, P.C. in Scottsdale.
Kent’s firm assists clients who have suffered financial or physical abuse by pursuing claims for financial exploitation, physical abuse and/or neglect, or establishing guardianship and conservatorship. Learn more about Berk Law Group here:berklawgroup.com
HERE IS MY Q & A WITH KENT:
LIBBY: Kent, scams often target seniors. They receive a call that their grandson needs money, or engage online with someone, and the next thing you know, they’ve sent money to a scammer. What can we do to help prevent that?
KENT: Education is key here. Make sure your loved ones know to never share financial or personal information over the phone, and be wary of unsolicited calls or emails. Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry (www.donotcall.gov), and freeze your credit. Most important in all of this is to be sure your loved ones are communicating openly about what is going on in their world. Be sure they feel comfortable talking and even admitting a mistake before the situation escalates.
LIBBY: Is it a good idea to make sure there is good monitoring as well?
KENT: Definitely. Checking financial accounts, setting up alerts for large transactions, and monitoring credit card and bank statements on a regular basis assures that if something unusual is happening it is caught early.
LIBBY: For a loved one who is showing
signs that they can no longer handle their own finances, what can our clients do?
KENT: Libby, as you know, one of the most important things they can do is to create an estate plan that includes a durable power of attorney. A durable power of attorney is one that survives the person’s disability and allows the agent to manage their affairs. The earlier the better! Do it before your loved one begins to deteriorate. There is no reason not to have these plans in place in the event someone becomes disabled or incapacitated.
In the event they don’t have such documents in place and they become incapacitated, the only option is likely a court proceeding for guardianship and/ or conservatorship.
LIBBY: Tell our readers about that.
KENT: Guardianship is a court proceeding where a court appoints a guardian to make personal and medical decisions for a person unable to make those decisions for themselves. Conservatorship is the court process for appointing someone to manage the financial affairs of a person who cannot manage them. Conservators handle paying bills, managing property, and safeguarding financial assets. We file these proceedings to allow a loved one to step in to handle the affairs of the person.
Those proceedings are time consuming and expensive. They can and should be avoided by proactive estate planning with a knowledgeable attorney, such as yourself. Appointing a trustworthy and dependable agent to serve under a power of attorney is very important.

From Weak in the Knees to Reclaiming His Stride: How John Found Lasting Knee Pain Relief Without Surgery
By Knee Pain Expert, Dr. Matthew Hernandez | Ethos Integrative Medicine
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
You’ve seen everyone for knee pain and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…
You’re too young to be losing your mobility — and, worse, your indepen-
dence. Yet, for many on the quest to conquer discomfort, the only option offered by most healthcare providers is to ‘wait until it gets worse.’ But here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can experience lasting relief now.
PAIN IS NOT SOMETHING YOU ‘JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH’
John, 42, came to us after exhausting every option outside of surgery: “The worst part is feeling constantly drained. The pain takes so much out of me mentally.” Despite months of physical therapy, cortisone injections, and doctor’s appointments, his improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also diagnosed him with a meniscus tear, but told him he needed to wait for it to

get worse to consider surgery. But John was determined to find a long-term solution that was NOT surgery.
WHAT THE OTHER DOCTORS MISSED…
John had fallen into what we call “The Gap”— where insurance-based care only offers temporary relief, surgery isn’t an option, and waiting for the pain to get worse seems like the only choice. Additionally, most providers only look for what they know how to treat. (If physical therapy and cortisone doesn’t work, and you’re not a surgical candidate, they have officially run out of options for you…)
Luckily, our meticulous ‘Deep Dive’ approach and expertise allowed our team to bridge that gap for John. Recognizing his frustration, we swiftly took action, confirming the meniscus tear and developing a targeted treatment plan to heal the damaged tissue. In just four weeks, the pain improved significantly, allowing John to regain his range of motion, confidently reclaim his stride, and return to the life he loves.
A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION, NO SURGERY OR PILLS
You don’t have to play the waiting game either; In fact, you’re one step away from a pain-free knee, too! With
our comprehensive Deep Dive to Avoid Surgery (which was also used to confirm John’s pain and guide his treatment strategy), we’ll not only get YOU an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you), but will also provide you with a personalized treatment plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.

Do You Have Belly Fat, Fatigue, Brain Fog or Hormonal Issues?
Are you gaining belly fat that you can’t seem to get rid of? Are you tired all the time, but can’t figure out what’s going on? Is your brain not functioning as well as it used to? If this is you, then please call us — we need to help you address this to prevent the long-term results of the above: heart attack, stroke, dementia, chronic joint pain/joint replacement surgery, depression, anxiety and many other chronic diseases.
No one wants to have a heart attack, stroke or dementia for sure, as many times we lose our independence, and it’s scary to depend on others all the time. Depression, anxiety and joint surgery doesn’t seem quite so bad but our ability to enjoy life is significantly diminished if we have these symptoms. And as we’re nearing or in retirement, we’ve been looking forward to enjoying travel, more athletics, time with grandkids and more hobbies, but if we’re not feeling good, it’s not a time of joy, it’s more a time of stress. That’s
not okay, and there’s a way to address that!
We see those around us gaining weight as they get older, so we start thinking it’s normal, but it’s really not! It didn’t used to be this way, even as short a time ago as the 1970s! Look at pictures of people at the beach or at gatherings from that time and the obese/ overweight person is rare. Now they’re everywhere — and treatment is not the “magic” drug Ozempic that everyone’s pushing.
It is important to look for underlying causes of weight gain — hormonal deficiency, chronic infections, undiagnosed sleep apnea, food sensitivities, chemical toxicity and the list goes on. These underlying issues often cause the fatigue that many of us feel — but alternatively, some people get overly-revved up. They can’t settle down to relax and they are in a state of fight or flight — which, temporarily, works better than exhaustion. However, we can’t heal our bodies when
we’re in fight of flight, so we need to undo that state to start improving our health.
Did you know that men have almost a 70 percent decrease in their sperm count these days as compared to 60 yrs ago? That means their sex hormones are way down too — which affects libido, body fat levels, motivation for life (and that ever present honey-do list) and our energy levels.
On the female side, it’s almost universal that women are having symptoms going through menopause these days when it used to be a non-event. Our monthly event just stopped being something we had to deal with, as compared to now many (if not most of us), have issues with severe brain fog, weight gain, depression/irritability, fatigue, joint pain, hot flashes — symptoms that are really interfering with our lives.
Prescriptions medications don’t fix these issues. They may cover up symptoms, but they’re not resolving the underlying cause. What Dr. Jennifer Sosnowski, one of the top Functional Medicine physicians in the country, and her team at MVP Medical Care, do is help you learn to get your full health back by resolving these symptoms naturally. With that, you’ll be looking good, feeling good and be ready to take on the world! You’ll be that awesome grandparent to your grandkids, be the leader in organizing trips with your friends, get out and enjoy hikes in nature (especially now that it’s getting cool), or start a new hobby!
If you’re ready to get your health back, call right away — your long-term health and happiness may be at stake! You’ve got a top Functional Medicine MD in your backyard, so take advantage of what MVP Medical offers! Schedule a free 15-minute Discovery Call at 480-588-7787 to talk about what’s going on with you and how we might help!
Identifying dysfunction in the body and mind and addressing the root causes has improved a wide range of physical and neurological problems. MVP refers to YOU, our Most Valued Patient. We offer highly focused personal care from a board-certified family practitioner with more than two decades of experience. Known as the Valley’s premier provider of integrative and functional medicine, Dr. Sosnowski has a strong reputation for investing inordinate amounts of time getting to know, diagnose and treat her patients.
We work to locate the underlying causes of unwanted symptoms and disease, as opposed to just addressing symptoms. We offer Magnetic Resonance Therapy or MeRT, to address a wide array of neurological conditions based on thorough diagnostics.

A Symbol of Community Spirit: The Heart of Scottsdale North
For years, Scottsdale North had nothing more than a rusted sign, a promise carved in metal but left to wither under the desert sun. The land sat untouched, the vision of the park forgotten. But not by us. On Valentine’s Day, that promise was fi nally fulfi lled — not by city planners or politicians, but by the relentless spirit of our community. The Scottsdale North Park is no longer just an idea; it’s a reality we built together.
THE FIGHT TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
On a hot morning in July 2018, Chris Cummings and another resident met with city representatives to open the discussion of getting the park built. That October, I wrote The Forgotten Scottsdale North Park to spark community interest, and by the end of the month, over 200 of you gathered at Winfield Clubhouse for the fi rst town hall. The representatives from the city were overwhelmed with the response at the meeting. There would have been more people but there wasn’t enough parking!! That night, it was clear—we weren’t giving up.
By March 2019, we packed a town hall at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, pushing forward with videos, emails, and calls. Later that year, we secured
a $6.1 million bond — our big win. We thought we’d crossed the fi nish line.
Then came the challenges in 2021. With meetings having moved online due to COVID, we flooded the city’s virtual comment site, making sure our voices were heard. There were compromises made — no dog park, only eight pickleball courts — but by working with the city’s fantastic team, we created a park catered to all parts of the community.
THE ELEVENTH-HOUR CHALLENGE
The fight wasn’t over. Just when we thought everything was settled, a small but determined group tried to derail the project behind the scenes. As I understand it, some claimed they had no idea a park was planned before buying their homes — despite the massive signs that had been there before the homes were sold. Others argued it would disrupt their lifestyle, though extensive city studies showed otherwise. They were committed to stopping progress and almost pulled it off. Almost. But our community wasn’t about to let years of hard work be erased.
That was the moment the community of Scottsdale North stepped up and showed its true strength. We refused to let a handful of voices undo what we had built together. So we fought back. The STOP THE STOP campaign took off — emails, newspaper articles, and conversations between neighbors. Over 600 of you signed a petition, hundreds sent emails, and countless more called city council members, urging them
to protect the park. And many of you stood with us at City Hall, making sure our voices were heard. Scottsdale North had never been more united.
VICTORY AND A LASTING LEGACY
The city council meeting was intense. We stood before them, side by side with the folks from the city, our community united in a cause that mattered to us all. It was touch and go for a while, but then one council member took a stand, recognizing what this park meant to us. One by one, the votes were cast. The final count: 7-0 in favor of the park. We did it!
In late 2023, we fi nally broke ground. But this wasn’t just about moving dirt — every shovel of earth was proof that persistence pays off. Now, as we stand on that very ground, we don’t just see a park. We see a testament to our persistence, a place where neighbors came together to create something lasting, turning an empty lot into the heart of Scottsdale North.

Presence
A new home puts a young family under surveillance by an otherworldly presence
Presence manages make its audience truly uncomfortable by filming in a way that creates a truly voyeuristic effect of this unique family. As you finally begin to become comfortable looking in on the private lives of the family members, things get scary. Suddenly you are second guessing everything you are seeing and have already been witness too. A terrific cast that rides the line between surreal and realistic, Chris Sullivan providing an “A” game performance. My only minor complaint is the camerawork. It feels a bit too much like a home movie operator, but based upon the movie theme itself, the framework is understandable and fits what Soderbergh is looking to accomplish. Overall, a fascinating film and worth price of admission.
Companion
A woman’s getaway with her boyfriend takes a horrific twist when she realizes just how little control she has in the relationship.
film to the point of almost making it seem amateurish. Roughly filmed starts and stops, exasperated by a scrip that is not overly funny or thrilling, creates what feels like some of the 90 minutes I have spent in one place in quite some time. The cast is solid. Unfortunately, they were not given a chance to showcase their talents with the material provided. At best, I would suggest waiting to see this when it hits your streaming service.
Love Hurts
Love is found in many ways as a salesman’s past comes back in an explosive way.
The Monkey takes us back to horror movies of yester year. Utterly graphic and over the top deaths are the film’s cornerstone. To its credit, there’s something oddly comforting about the how it handles life and death. Seeing the brothers living their lives in fear, destroying everything they have over past misdeeds, it’s a good dosage of pathos the film needs in light of the overall silliness. Theo James’ running double duty in the lead roles works perfectly within the film’s balance of tragedy and absurdity. As a whole the performances and the script sells you on the idea that maybe this could happen, maybe. The tone and dialogue may not be for everyone, but if you find yourself into Osgood Perkins’ unique way of filmmaking, you will be well rewarded here. A story that helps you laugh at how silly death can be.
NEW RELEASES
I had high hopes for this film. Ke Huy Quan is a charismatic actor and brings so much from his stuntman days to the productions he is on. Unfortunately, Love Hurts is true to its name. The movie is unbelievably rushed and has a sense that the editing was left in its first draft/first cut form when released. There’s a smart film about the trials of becoming a better person, but it’s unbelievably half baked. No help was seen by the majority of the characters who ended up as wastes of solid talent pool. I was particularly disappointed in the material provided to Ariana DeBose’s (our fateful co-star). DeBose’s abilities were sadly underutilized. Even the action scenes waiver between solid to choppy and staged. This had all the makings of “what could have been” only to leave you with “what should not have ever been.”
Companion’s theme and execution are understandably going to resonate with many audience members. That said, it’s hard to see what the film itself brings us that hasn’t been said before in other films of the same or similar genres. If anything, the odd tonal balance and pacing ends up hurting the

Is Pain Stealing Your Life, One Day at a Time?
New Book by Dr. Tom Padilla Shares Helpful Information, Tips, and Advice for People Let Down by the Medical System
In the next 10 years, the surgical industry is expected to double. From joint replacements to spinal surgeries, more and more people are being told their only option is invasive procedures. Yet in the U.S., we already spend as much on back pain annually as we do on cancer, diabetes, and arthritis combined—without meaningful progress.
The worst part? These surgeries are far from guaranteed to restore your quality of life. Our reactive healthcare system focuses on managing symptoms instead of solving problems at their root. If you want to protect your quality of life, the time to take control is now.

problem—and what to do instead.
For many people, persistent pain doesn’t just steal your mobility—it shrinks your world. Whether it’s playing with your kids or grandkids, traveling, or enjoying hobbies, pain can make even small moments feel out of reach.
That’s why local doctor Tom Padilla wrote his #1 bestselling book, Solving the Root Cause of Pain. Inspired by his own battle with undiagnosed chronic pain in his 20s, and countless stories from patients - Dr. Padilla created this easyto-read book to help others escape the cycle of temporary fixes and failed treatments.
“Many people we see at my clinic have been told their pain is just a part of getting older, or that nothing more can be done,” says Dr. Padilla. “But most of the time, pain isn’t inevitable—it’s a signal that something deeper is going on. You just need the right tools to address it.”
“Pain Isn’t Just Physical—It Steals the Best Parts of Your Life”
The book offers practical tools and insights for those struggling to find answers. Readers will discover:
• The Root Cause of Pain: Why most treatments fail and how to address the real issue.
• Breaking Free from Temporary Fixes: How to avoid the cycle of painkillers, injections, and short-term solutions.
• The Hidden Cause of Stiffness: Why stretching and massage don’t fix the
• Finding the Right Providers: How to identify skilled providers and spot red flags before wasting time or money.
• Taking Control of Your Health: Simple strategies to stay active, prevent injuries, and enjoy life without fear of pain returning.
• Why MRI’s and X-Rays Can Be Misleading: Why relying on imaging alone is risky.
Each chapter provides clear, actionable advice to help you find answers the healthcare system hasn’t been able to give you.
“What If You’re Not ‘Just Getting Older’—But You’ve Got the Wrong Diagnosis?”
“Many chronic injuries can heal if treated at the root cause,” says Dr. Padilla. “But far too often, healthcare providers miss the mark by focusing only on symptoms. People end up stuck, wasting time on ineffective treatments, and feeling like their pain will never go away.”
One example is Kathy, a 50-year-old grandmother who had tried everything from chiropractic care to massage therapy, only to be left frustrated and in pain. After working with Dr. Padilla’s team to uncover the root cause of her pain, Kathy was back to hiking, playing with her grandkids, and living life without fear of injuries holding her back.
Dr. Padilla’s book not only helps readers identify the root cause of their pain but also teaches them

how to evaluate whether a treatment is working. His goal is to provide clarity in a system that often leaves patients in the dark.
