MCDOT INITIATES BRIDGE DECK REPAIRS ON GAVILAN PEAK PARKWAY, EXPECT TRAVEL DELAYS
Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has announced the commencement of extensive bridge deck repairs on Gavilan Peak Parkway, just south of Daisy Mountain Drive, effective throughout June. As part of the rehabilitation process, skilled crews will be focusing on repairing the bridge decks, applying a durable epoxy overlay to enhance the bridge surfaces, and installing fresh pavement markings. To minimize disruption to traffic flow, MCDOT has devised a strategic plan.
The repair work will be conducted on one side of the bridge at a time, ensuring that one lane of travel remains accessible in each direction. Although measures have been taken to maintain accessibility, motorists are advised to account for additional travel time due to potential delays caused by the ongoing repairs. The scheduled work hours for the repairs are set from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and continue throughout June. MCDOT has selected these hours to mitigate inconvenience to commuters during peak traffic times.
However, travelers should still anticipate some temporary slowdowns and plan their journeys accordingly. This
crucial maintenance project aims to improve the structural integrity and overall safety of the bridge on Gavilan Peak Parkway. MCDOT appreciates the public's cooperation and urges motorists to exercise caution while driving through the construction area. By adhering to posted signage and adjusting travel plans, drivers can help ensure a smooth flow of traffic and the successful completion of the repairs. For the most up-to-date information and possible updates on the project, individuals are encouraged to visit the official MCDOT website at mcdot.maricopa.gov.

Anthem Community Council Greenlights Expansion of the Anthem Veterans Memorial
Photo courtesy of the Anthem Community Council
THE ANTHEM COMMUNITY COUNCIL (ACC) HAS APPROVED AN AMBITIOUS EXPANSION PROJECT FOR THE ANTHEM VETERANS MEMORIAL (AVM), A MOVE THAT WILL ENRICH THE MEMORIAL SITE AS A CHERISHED COMMUNITY LANDMARK AND HONOR TO OUR COUNTRY'S SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN.
The proposed expansion was given the go-ahead at the April 2023 ACC board meeting. Rear Admiral Ron Tucker (USN, Retired) presented the proposal on behalf of the 2023 AVM Expansion Committee. The council also affirmed Haydon Corps, the original builders of the AVM, as the exclusive contractors for the expansion project.
This expansion will add 3,000 commemorative pavers to the Circle of Honor, raising the total to 5,400. In addition to this, the project promises several enhancements to improve the memorial's accessibility and aesthetic appeal. This includes the installation of new lighting systems, the addition of two sidewalks to facilitate entry, the revitalization of flower beds, and measures to redirect water from the AVM pavers to provide relief from water and dust. The expansion will also involve relocating sponsor pavers to a new area and adorning the tops of the pillars with new enhancements.
With a budget of $172,000, the expansion is set to be funded through the Anthem Way Foundation, a 501c3 charitable organization dedicated to supporting and maintaining the Anthem Veterans Memorial. Those interested in contributing to this worthy cause can make a tax-deductible donation by following the instructions at onlineatanthem.com.
The ACC extends its gratitude to the 2023 AVM Expansion Committee, comprising Jim Martin, the chief engineer; Dan Cleland, the landscape architect; Elizabeth Turner, who handled fundraising and planning; and Steve Seivert and Mark Eklund from Haydon Corps.
The Anthem Veterans Memorial, situated in the Community Park of Anthem, is a notable symbol of respect for the sacrifices of our country's armed forces. Dedicated on Nov. 11, 2011, the memorial offers a serene space for reflection and honor for veterans, their
families, and friends. The AVM gained recognition as an Arizona Historic Landmark in April 2012.
The Anthem Way Foundation, established in 2011, serves as the charitable arm of the Anthem Community Council. It primarily facilitates and accepts donations for programs and services that support the Anthem Veterans Memorial.
Anthem, a master-planned private community, is governed by the Anthem Community Council, Inc., which is committed to fostering a sense of community, driving sound economic development, and promoting a quality of life for all Anthem residents. This expansion of the Anthem Veterans Memorial aligns with the council's mission and marks a significant step in enhancing the community's cultural heritage.

Ability360 Presents Independence Cup on
July 4
First-ever inclusive public eSports tournament benefits the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer team.
INDEPENDENCE DAY THIS YEAR WILL HOLD A NEW EXCITEMENT FOR ESPORTS ENTHUSIASTS AND SUPPORTERS OF INCLUSIVE SPORTS, AS ABILITY360 INTRODUCES ITS INAUGURAL INDEPENDENCE CUP. Scheduled for July 4, this groundbreaking eSports tournament will spotlight inclusivity in gaming, with the fast-paced game Rocket League taking center stage. The event seeks to raise funds for the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer Team, with corporate sponsorships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
Player registration opened on May 26, and the event is already attracting interest from across the gaming community. “We’re very excited about this new opportunity to bring attention to our diverse supports and programs for people with disabilities,” says Chris Rodriguez, president and CEO of Ability360.
The Independence Cup promises not only thrilling Rocket League action, but also a platform to celebrate adaptive sports. Power Soccer, the game loved and played by those who Ability360’s tournament seeks to honor, shares a common theme with Rocket League - playing soccer in non-traditional ways.
Power Soccer caters specifically to individuals with disabilities, with players using power wheelchairs in place of conventional soccer maneuvers. Over the years, it has gained international recognition as an adaptive sport, with tournaments taking place worldwide.
The Independence Cup pays tribute to Ability360 Power Soccer players Austin Cuaderno and Everett Frahm, who were cherished members of the community. Tony Jackson, Ability360 Power Soccer coordinator, athlete, and coach, says, “”The Ability360 Independence Cup is a wonderfully fitting way to honor Austin and Everett, both incredible power soccer athletes and dear friends. Funds raised will help us continue sharing the sport they loved with a new generation of adaptive sport athletes.”
All proceeds raised from the Independence Cup will directly benefit the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer Program, fueling its mission to make adaptive sports accessible to all.
Meghan Fable, director of development at Ability360, encourages anyone interested in supporting the event to reach out. As the organization presents its first-ever inclusive gaming tournament, Ability360 is setting an example for the industry, highlighting the significant role inclusive gaming plays in the broader sporting landscape.
In a world where eSports are rapidly gaining popularity, the Ability360 Independence Cup serves a dual purpose: fostering a sense of community and inclusivity in the gaming world, while honoring the legacy of two beloved athletes. As Rocket League players gear up for the tournament, the spirit of the event echoes far beyond the virtual playing field: it’s about empowerment, remembrance, and the joy of sport. City News Phoenix Police Foundation Approves Five Grants for Phoenix Police
THE PHOENIX POLICE FOUNDATION, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT ADDRESSES UNMET CAPITAL NEEDS OF THE CITY OF PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT, RECENTLY APPROVED FIVE GRANTS PROVIDING OVER $100,000 IN FUNDING FOR THE PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT. The grants will aim to support canine units, protective shields, cadet programs, officer volunteer programs, and the PAL Youth Basketball league lead by officers.
The Phoenix Police Canine Units will be receiving a Throwbot 2 Robot and a K9 Storm Vest ($19,519). The Throwbot 2 robot is remote controlled, allowing a preview of the environment from a protected position prior to any officer or canine entering a structure. Having knowledge of the environment and threats prior to entering a structure is difficult to achieve but allows for a much safer mission for the canines and officers. In addition, the canine units will receive K9 Storm Vests. The soft armor vest provide the K9s additional protection from pistol caliber projectiles and stabbings.
The Phoenix Police Department Downtown Operations Unit will receive two TYR Protective Ballistic Shield Kits (valued at $35,000) from the foundation. The Downtown Operations Unit (DOU) provides police coverage for the downtown Phoenix area including sporting and event venues, as well as many high-rise offices and apartment buildings. Unlike most shields, the TYR Protective Shield Kit has the capability to stand alone to provide cover and concealment without manually being held by an officer. The shield would provide DOU officers the most protection in a high-rise structure that contains long hallways or corridors.
The Phoenix Police Cadet Program provides young adults with law enforcement training, leadership skills, and experiences with an emphasis on the importance of community relationships. The program will receive $30,000 to assist with their annual expenses.
The Citizens Offering Police Support (COPS) Program will be awarded $10,000 from the Phoenix Police Foundation. The COPS program allows citizen volunteers and college interns to support the department through non-enforcement roles and assistance. The program has approximately 150 volunteers and 16 interns who contribute hundreds of volunteer hours each year. This donation will be used to purchase uniforms, safety vests, and other needs of COPS program.
Lastly, Phoenix Police Activities League (PAL) Elite Basketball Program will receive $10,000 from the Phoenix Police Foundation. The PAL Elite club provides underserved youth with positive interactions with the police while learning teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, communication, leadership skills, and responsibility through athletics. The elite high school basketball team practices weekly and participates in numerous tournaments throughout the valley. This donation will cover expenses including tournament entry fees, equipment, and uniforms.
To approve the funding for all grants, the Phoenix Police Foundation board voted on issues that impact the community and the Phoenix Police Foundation the most. Each grant will be utilized to protect officers, build stronger community relationships, and provide equipment to serve the community. For more information on the grants, visit phoenixpolicefoundation.org.

Barro’s Pizza and Pepsi Unite for Eighth Year in Philanthropic Drive for Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children
ARIZONA’S MUCH-LOVED FAMILYOWNED RESTAURANT CHAIN BARRO’S PIZZA AND GLOBAL BEVERAGE GIANT PEPSI ARE SET TO COMBINE THEIR STRENGTHS FOR THE EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN AN INSPIRING FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN. Their target? Aiding the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC) and the invaluable work it performs for families impacted by pediatric cancer.
Throughout the entire month of June, all Barro’s Pizza locations across Arizona will devote a portion of their proceeds, aiming to raise up to $40,000, from the sale of any lunch special to support ACFC’s mission.
With a tempting range of lunch specials to choose from, customers can enjoy a satisfying meal while contributing to a noble cause. Operating hours for this initiative may vary by location.
“We look forward to this fundraiser every year,” says Ken Barro, co-owner of Barro’s Pizza. “Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children has been instrumental in helping so many Arizona families during a very trying time. Thanks to our loyal customers, we’ve raised more than $221,000 to date and are excited to support them again this year.”
Established in 2013, ACFC was born out of the heart-wrenching experience of Chrisie Funari, who lost her young daughter, Ava, to cancer. Funari channeled her pain and the struggles of navigating Ava’s treatment into a mission to empower families in similar situations.
ACFC ensures these families have access to necessary medical treatments, secure housing, and continual support. The foundation’s efforts have since assisted
hundreds of local families and remain committed to expanding this reach.
“We are so grateful for Barro’s Pizza’s continued support,” says Funari president and founder of ACFC. “Their contribution has had a significant impact on our ability to provide critical services and support to children and their families affected by cancer. We can’t thank them enough for their commitment to our cause and for making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are proud to have partners like Barro’s Pizza in our community.”
Barro’s Pizza, a beacon of local enterprise and tradition, is known far and wide for its unique pizza recipe. Passed down from Grandma Angelina Barro, who migrated from Italy in the 1930s, the pizza boasts a thick crust, tangy, and sweet spiced sauce that has won over many a palate. The restaurant chain operates 47 locations in Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal Counties, and one in McKinney, Texas. In addition to their signature pizzas, the menu includes wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, glutenfree options, desserts, and a variety of beverages. They also cater to different dining preferences with dine-in, take-out, delivery, online ordering, in-app ordering, and catering services.

Education BARRY GOLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL: A Community of Achievers Defying Expectations
By Sondra Barr
Barry Goldwater High School is defying expectations and transforming the way it is viewed by the community, thanks to its top-notch programs, diverse clubs, and competitive sports teams. Among these programs is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which offers students a rigorous and comprehensive liberal arts curriculum. The school's Avenue 27 culinary program allows students to learn valuable skills and showcase their culinary talents, while numerous clubs and sports teams provide opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and teamwork.
One student who exemplifies this spirit of achievement is Asianna Junge. A senior at Barry Goldwater, she’s made an indelible mark during her four years at the school. A dedicated student, she has been involved in student government throughout her high school career, even serving as the student body president for the past two years. An IB diploma student, Junge is heavily involved in clubs, including the Society of Female Scholars, which she founded on campus this year as part of her IB CAS project.
One of the society's most significant accomplishments has been providing free menstrual care products in all school restrooms. "We already had those products available in the nurse's office, but a group of women thought it was important to have those available in the restrooms as well," says Junge. In addition to her work with the society, she has been actively involved in DECA, a business and marketing club. Her participation in DECA led her to place first in marketing communications at the state level this year.
Junge attributes her success to the supportive community at Barry Goldwater. She will be attending Rice University on a QuestBridge National College Scholarship.
Junior D'Vaughn Hicks, a fourth-generation track athlete, has similarly benefited from the environment at Barry Goldwater. Hicks, a junior, has attended the school for three years. Among his achievements is making it to the state finals in track and field, becoming one of Arizona's top hurdlers. "It's just amazing overall," he says. "I started from the bottom, and now I'm working my way to the top.
Hicks began his Barry Goldwater journey when he moved to Arizona in 2019. Coming from Detroit, Michigan, a city known for its dangerous and challenging environment, Hicks says that one's origins don’t have to define their future. He wants to inspire others by proving that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
"Just because I grew up in a poverty-stricken area with drugs, gangs, and violence, doesn't mean I have to turn out that way," he explains.
Barry Goldwater has provided him with the supportive community and opportunities to pursue his dreams and inspire others. He credits the guidance of his coach, Bill Scott, and the support of his teacher, Ms. Torres, for helping him form a positive mindset. Hicks plans to attend Macalester College.
Sadie Garcia, a senior at Barry Goldwater, has also experienced significant personal growth during her high school years. Initially shy and antisocial, Garcia credits her involvement in the culinary program and yearbook club for helping her break out of her shell. "I've met a lot of new friends," she says. Participating in yearbook activities, such as attending games to take photos, has further encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
As Garcia reflects on her high school journey, she expresses gratitude for the teachers who have supported her along the way. Ms. Hansen, a history teacher, has not only provided academic guidance but also emotional support when Garcia faced challenges in other classes. Similarly, Mr. Moline, her yearbook teacher, has been a source of positivity and encouragement. Garcia's advice to incoming students is to "have a lot of confidence" and embrace the bumps in the road as opportunities for growth. She looks forward to pursuing a career as a 911 dispatcher and continuing her education in college.
Barry Goldwater’s IB Program, which has been in place since 1999, provides a comprehensive and rigorous liberal arts curriculum for talented students. With 33 IB schools in Arizona offering 40 programs, Barry Goldwater is among those leading the way in providing exceptional educational opportunities.
Another standout program at the school is the studentrun Avenue 27 culinary program. Through hands-on experience in the culinary arts, students develop valuable skills and gain insights into the world of professional cooking.
The school's diverse array of clubs, activities, and topnotch programs are testament to its commitment to fostering a supportive and empowering environment for its students.
Through the dedication and hard work of students like Junge, Hicks, and Garcia, as well as the support of teachers and mentors, Barry Goldwater is changing the way it's viewed by the community.

AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan Helps Bring Dreams to Life with Creative Photo Contest
AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office are inviting kindergarten through 12th grade students across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the “My PicturePerfect Career” photo contest.
Summer vacation is an ideal time for families to talk with children about what they’d like to be when they grow up and explore potential career interests with trips to Arizona libraries, museums, and other local hands-on learning resources. Taking and sharing pictures while discussing job aspirations is the goal of this summer’s “My Picture-Perfect Career” Photo Contest, which is open to students through 12th grade across Arizona.
Students are encouraged to take or pose for a photo representing themselves in their dream job. They can take a selfie, pose for a picture, invite friends and family into the shot or come up with their own creative ideas. The final photo just needs to visually communicate their vision of a dream job – whether the participant is in front of or behind the camera! A total of 10 winners will be selected across the state and receive $529 towards opening a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from across Arizona’s 15 counties.
The goal of the photo contest is to increase awareness of the AZ529 Plan and pave a path for another generation of students to achieve their post-secondary dreams through proper savings. Winners will be honored by Treasurer Kimberly Yee during a special ceremony at the state capitol in September. Be advised that by submitting photos to this contest, you acknowledge and agree that the photo may be publicly displayed.
In total, $5,290 will be distributed to
10 students to assist in saving for their educational plans beyond high school. Parents or guardians of the winners will be responsible for setting up an AZ529 account if an account does not already exist. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school, and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.
For more information about AZ529, visit az529.gov. For complete contest details and rules, visit az529.gov/photocontest.

Want a reason to play with your food? While adults may discourage us from doing so, food items can teach us a lot about science, especially chemistry. And it can be fun too! In this activity, you’ll learn about how vinegar and baking soda create a reaction and form carbon dioxide bubbles. When a raisin joins the (dance) party, the bubbles that are formed stick to the raisins and their many wrinkles, causing them to float to the top. When the raisins reach the top, bubbles tend to pop and release the gas which, in turn, allows the raisins to sink back down to the bottom.
Supplies
• 1 clear plastic cup
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 to 7 raisins
• Water
• Vinegar Challenge
• Fill you cup about halfway with water
• Add one teaspoon of baking soda and stir until dissolved in water
• Add 6 to 7 raisins into the cup
• Very slowly pour in vinegar until cup is three-fourths full
• Watch the raisins dance
What did you think would happen to the raisins? Did they surprise you? What happened? What do you think is causing the bubble to form? What type of gas is it? You can try this experiment with other small fruits–how do you think the reaction would
be different if you used grapes? Or a blueberry. What about a cherry tomato?
There are lots of different ways to learn about science in your very own home. Science is all around us, and as long as you ask and have supervision, it is great to be curious about what other experiments you can conduct. Visit azscience.org and find experiments just like this!

Going solar?
Here's what you need to know.
By Shay Moser
Solar panels are a lot less expensive than they were a decade ago. But they’re still an investment and determining whether you can install a system can be daunting — something Val Berechet learned firsthand.
His journey with solar started in 2014 when he invested in a system for his home that wasn't correctly installed. While permits and inspections were delayed over eight months, he learned the ins and outs of solar installation, let go of the company installing his system, and reinstalled it himself. In 2015, Berechet put his frustrating experience into co-founding Sunsolar Solutions and has since helped more than 10,000 homeowners go solar by providing education, honest quotes, reputable installations, and transparency.
Berechet says people tend to hold a few common misconceptions about solar panels, which prevent them from making sound financial decisions.
"We help homeowners understand how solar panels work, choose a system that meets their needs, and know what to expect," says Berechet, president and CEO of Sunsolar Solutions. "Unfortunately, many companies set the wrong expectations or
sell smaller, cheaper systems while telling the homeowner it will perform like a larger system. This gives our industry a black eye."
As chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee for the AriSEIA, the Arizona chapter of the national Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Berechet helps educate the public and key decision-makers about solar, storage technologies, electrification, and energy efficiency. The nonprofit 501(c)(6) trade organization also focuses on promoting professionalism within the industry and helping create and protect public policies that support the sector and its customers.
“A lot of new companies that come from out of state are not educated about the market, such as how SRP and APS utility companies work with solar,” says Berechet. “It's more complex here than it is in other states. There will be bad apples in every industry, but I don't think that's the issue. A lot of it is misinformation and miseducation on the sales side.”
Berechet says homeowners can also help by asking the right questions, such as “How will my utility bill be impacted after I go solar?” He stresses that technology and resources to accurately estimate the effects of solar are available today, and homeowners
should not accept vague answers when looking into solar.
Also, many solar companies don’t install the solar panels they sell, continues Berechet. Sunsolar Solutions sells and installs, providing multiple design options and sharing the total cost upfront so customers can pick the best system for their budget.
“Because we are local and hands-on, we walk the customer through the entire process and handle every aspect of installation,” Berechet says. “Our customers know what to expect because we ensure our sales reps are properly educated and explain it well.”
Some of the frequent expectations Sunsolar Solutions customers have, says Berechet, include grid reliance, energy output, roof impact, weather and climate requirements, the lifespan of solar panels, and the return on investment.
While the answers can be complicated, Sunsolar Solutions helps customers understand everything from the get-go — from how many solar panels are needed to meet energy usage to factors about the roof, such as age and tree cover.
“One of the important things in our process is to
18 • June/July 2023 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS myhyperlocalnews.com Cover Story
get the correct information from the homeowner,” Berechet explains. “We need to see customers’ electric bills or at least get the last 12 months of electric usage because solar systems are built around how much power a house uses.”
Once Sunsolar Solutions understands a customer’s home’s energy usage, it puts together a detailed quote, including incentives.
Berechet says there are federal and state tax incentives to offset the upfront costs, which Sunsolar Solutions’ energy consultants ensure customers don’t miss if they qualify. For instance, the Federal Solar Tax Credit allows eligible homeowners to reduce the taxes they owe by up to 30% of their solar panel installation cost from their federal income taxes. If the homeowner already paid their taxes through their employer’s W2 withholding, they’ll receive a check back from the IRS. Consider state incentives, too, like in the Valley, which provides a 25% tax credit, up to $1,000, for purchased systems.
After Sunsolar Solutions does a site survey, it puts together an engineering plan, gets permits from the city or county, and seeks approval from the utility company. Then it’s time for the system to be installed.
“We're big on installing things the right way, using the right equipment and installation methods,” Berechet says. “We even have an internal quality control specialist that checks the system post-install.”
If Sunsolar Systems’ quality control specialist approves the installation, the city is called to do its inspection. If everything looks good, Berechet says they file a few remaining documents with the utility company, and then, after that, the system gets turned on.
“It depends where you live; if you live in a city where the permitting process is quicker, installation can be completed within a matter of weeks, and the entire process is done within two months,” Berechet says.
Throughout the entire project, Sunsolar Solutions customers have a dedicated project specialist as their point of contact who answers questions and keeps them updated about the timeline.
Valley residents looking into solar can soon make the Consumer Protection Committee of the AriSEIA their point of contact. One of its significant initiatives, says Berechet, is ensuring consumers are educated so they can protect themselves by asking the right questions about it. Also, the committee is assembling a preferred installer program with local utility companies, much like the one SRP offers, which Sunsolar Solutions is a part of.
“If a solar customer doesn't have a good experience, they often call the utility company and complain about it,” explains Berechet. “So, our interests are aligned, and we need to make sure homeowners understand solar and have the right expectations.”
If you’re ready to start with solar, call Sunsolar Solutions for a free quote at 602-848-9574.

Legal Speeding into Trouble: Five Surprising Ways You Can Incur Criminal Charges in Arizona
By Zachary J. Thornley
Everyone speeds from time to time. Whether on purpose or by accident, it happens. Often speeding is a minor civil violation. While a civil violation may cost you your hard-earned money, it is not considered criminal and does not go onto your permanent criminal record. Over the years I have had clients ask, “Will this stay on my record?” The answer is, if it’s criminal, and you’re found guilty, it will follow you for the rest of your life with few exceptions. Although most of the time speeding is civil in nature, Arizona can charge you as a criminal for speeding.
HERE ARE FIVE WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN BECOME A CRIMINAL JUST BY SPEEDING.
1. Speeding more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit on freeways, residential districts, and business districts can get you a criminal speeding ticket.
2. Exceeding 35 miles per hour while approaching and going through a school zone. I think everyone frowns upon speeding past children, and Arizona can charge you as a criminal for doing so.
3. If you are aggressively driving in such a manner that you violate multiple civil traffic laws, it is possible for you to be charged criminally with aggressive driving. An aggressive driving charge includes speeding and a combination of two of the following: a) Failure to obey traffic control devices, b) Overtaking and passing another vehicle on the right side of shoulder of a road or highway, c) unsafe lane change, d) following another vehicle too closely, or e) failure to yield the right-of-way. In addition to the criminal charge, you could lose your privilege to drive for 30 days.
4. Driving recklessly is slightly more vague but easy enough to figure out. If you drive in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property, then you could get charged with a class
2 misdemeanor. Reckless refers to a mental state of mind. Arizona defines this as being aware of a substantial and unjustifiable risk and making the decision to ignore the risk.
One example I have seen prosecutors pursue before would be using drugs and then driving. But wait a second - wouldn’t that be Driving Under the Influence (DUI)? Yes, but you can also be simultaneously charged with reckless driving because the state of Arizona recognizes these as two distinct and separate crimes. Reckless driving can also be combined with our next way to become a criminal while driving.
5. Racing. Humans love competitions involving speed, whether it is horses and chariots, NASCAR, or just a souped-up Mustang and everything in-between. Personally, I love watching supercross and really any dirt bike related races. All sanctioned races take place on a closed course. A closed course is closed to the public and the risk of racing stays with those who are racing. When a person decides to race down a public roadway or highway it is a criminal act. Racing doesn’t necessarily equal speeding. The statute states that if you participate in any manner, you can be charged. This means that even if you spin your tires at a stop light in anticipation of racing the person next to you it could result in a criminal charge.
Any time someone faces the implications of a criminal charge it is important to consult with an experienced attorney.

Hello Neighbor!
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… starting the day by checking my emails and texts. This way, I can reply to clients and get everything organized at the start of the day. I then look to see if any product orders have arrived that require handling and shipping. My husband handles shipping and handling, so I will then send those emails to him. He’s amazing at getting orders processed quickly. Most orders are shipped the day they are received and are shipped by priority mail.
After lunch, I start accepting client appointments. I often work 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Most clients work full-time, and I enjoy working evenings, so I have arranged my appointment hours to work well with their schedules. I also work Saturdays.
and contentment. I work a lot, but I’m rarely stressed because I follow this rule: Whenever I begin to feel “burnout” I step back and re-evaluate. Where am I going wrong? Am I spending too much time at work and nothing else? Then, I make proper adjustments.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING IS… “Forrest Gump.” It is one of my favorite movies. It inspires all of us to become better people. It motivates us to be successful despite our flaws and encourages individualism, success through diligence, as well as progress and change. In many ways, it reflects much of what I stand for. My business logo is a butterfly because I believe that you can overcome anything and become great!
day for me is having every single thing go well during work hours and being able to relax and detach at the end of the day, knowing that I have done the job well and that it’s now time to enjoy a few hours without responsibilities. And, waking up the next day, in good health, to enjoy the best life.
MY LIFE IS…. at the happiest point in my life, having married Brian Hamerski, my soulmate, at the age of 55, and feeling ageless. My family is growing, my business is successful and also growing, and I have an exciting, purpose-filled life! I’m 66 years old and thriving! My life is GREAT!
HELLO, MY NAME IS… Carmen Hamerski. I own Carmenique Beauty Skincare and Carmenique Beauty & Wellness, an esthetics studio in Desert Hills. You can find us at carmeniquebeauty.com.
I LIVED IN PHOENIX SINCE 2015 AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE…the community has embraced us, are so supportive of my businesses, and they’re very friendly and warm. I love the weather here, too, because I have always loved hot weather. In addition, I suffer from Raynaud’s Disease. That’s a type of circulatory condition that can cause severe pain to the fingers, toes, and ears in cold temperatures. I can handle 120 degree weather much better than 50 degree weather. People laugh because I’m always cold and carry a sweater everywhere, even in the summer.
MY FAMILY IS… very precious to me. I have my husband, Brian, two adult sons, a daughter-in-law, and 6-month-old twin grandchildren, a boy and a girl. It saddens me that they live in California, and that I can’t see them as often as I wish. However, they often come to Arizona to visit and vice-versa. Now that we’re grandparents of beautiful twin babies we will probably travel to California more often. We don’t’ want to miss watching them grow up.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… of course, my family is of great importance to me. They are my saving grace. Additionally, I find that I can’t live without balance in my life. I love the fact that I can balance work, my wonderful hobby of ballroom dance, my family and social life, as well as my spiritual life well. Having balance in my life allows me to live a stress-free, exciting life full of joy
THE ONE PERSON THAT MOTIVATES ME IS… my husband. He motivates me every day as I watch him go through the day. He wakes up at 5 a.m., cares for our two ill dogs, handles all managerial aspects of our business, cooks most meals; handles the gardening, grocery shopping, and laundry and drives with me to all doctors’ appointments, as well as all doctors’ appointments for himself and our family member that we care for. He is extremely emotionally and physically energetic. Oh, and he takes ballroom lessons with me! I know he does it just for me! He’s always even tempered, kind, caring, supportive, and incredibly compassionate.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… I don’t believe that there is such thing as perfection. I call it “greatness.” A day may not be “perfect” but it can still be great. A great
THE BEST GIFT I HAVE EVER RECEIVED WAS… from one of my friends who gave me a poem, on butterfly paper (I love butterflies), that listed the qualities she loved about me. I was so touched! I framed it and hung it on my wall. I see it every day. It also motivates me to clearly tell my loved ones what it is I love about them. One can’t assume they know.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… I have lived abroad and I no longer have the need to go there. I prefer to take vacations throughout the U.S. these days. There are so many states I have never visited. My dream vacation is to take a month or six weeks off work and visit as many states as possible next year and every year thereafter. I would love to visit every state.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… from my dad: “Dare to Dare.” As the result, I have lived a very full, exciting, and interesting life.

Real Estate Seize the Opportunity: Selling Your Home in North Phoenix this Spring and Summer Amid Falling Mortgage Rates
By Shelley Sakala
Are you considering selling your home in North Phoenix? Well, here’s some good news: according to ATTOM, a leading real estate data provider, the best time to put your house on the market is during the spring and early summer months. Based on sales data spanning over a decade, this is when home buyers are most active, and sellers can fetch the highest premiums for their properties.
ATTOM’s analysis reveals some interesting findings. In the spring, sellers have the potential to secure 10% or more above market value for their homes. Specifically, the months of May and June boast the highest premiums, with sellers receiving a remarkable 12.8% and 10.7% above market value, respectively. As we transition into the summer, sellers can still expect to earn between 8% and 10% more.
Now, some sellers might be hesitant to list their homes due to concerns about their current low mortgage rates. However, the good news is that mortgage rates are actually falling and are expected to continue dropping in the near future. This presents an excellent opportunity for sellers to capitalize on the market conditions, particularly in light of the premiums available during the spring and early summer months.
Over the next 90 days, various residential economists and housing authorities predict a decline in mortgage rates. According to The Mortgage Reports’ survey, the 30year mortgage is forecasted to drop to an average of 6.28% by the end of the second quarter. Predictions from industry experts range from a low of 6.1% (Fannie Mae) to a high of 6.56% (National Association of Home Builders).
This news is incredibly welcome, especially for buyers looking to secure lower mortgage rates and for hesitant sellers who might be motivated by the changing market conditions. Smart sellers can leverage these falling rates and the potential premiums during the summer months to strike a great deal.
So, if you’re considering selling your home in North Phoenix, now is the time to act. The spring and summer months offer the best opportunities to attract active buyers and secure premium prices. With falling mortgage rates on the horizon, it’s an advantageous moment for both buyers and sellers to make their move in the vibrant North Phoenix real estate market.

Community D-Backs Score a Grand Slam with 100-Year-Old Hospice Patient
By Lin Sue Flood

Growing up in the Babe Ruth era, Myra Blaker has been a lifelong baseball fan. After moving to Phoenix from Chicago, she pledged loyalty to her hometown Arizona Diamondbacks — even posting their game schedule on her front door. In the weeks leading up to their home opener at Chase Field, all she talked about was baseball.
As a surprise, Blaker’s Hospice of the Valley care team made a great play — pitching her as the inaugural guest of D-Backs Wishes for Seniors. This special program grants once-in-a-lifetime experiences to deserving seniors and is sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Arizona Complete Health.
“We are so honored to partner with the devoted nurses and social workers at Hospice of the Valley to deliver these incredible experiences,” says Debbie Castaldo,
D-Backs’ senior VP for Corporate & Community Impact. “It was wonderful to see Myra rooting for her team. She was living her best life!”
On the night of the game, the team covered all the bases. Blaker, who turns 101 in September, got the VIP treatment — premium parking, great seats, free food and drinks, including a beer she insisted on finishing! Hospice of the Valley nurse Kelly McGovern and social worker Renee Adams came along to monitor her oxygen and make sure Blaker had the time of her life. Paul Piperata, her caregiver at Weyrich Health Care Center in Scottsdale, also joined the fun, and kindly arranged for a seven-passenger van with wheelchair access.
As they took their seats near the on-deck circle, Blaker whispered, “Look how close we are! We can even see what they keep in their pockets!”
Blaker’s daughter, Laura, says she couldn’t remember
seeing her mom so excited. “The D-Backs hit a homerun with Mom. She loved every single minute and never stopped smiling!”
About the fifth inning, McGovern started to wonder if the centenarian might want to leave early. “Not a chance,” Blaker insisted. “I won’t miss a single play!” Just when the baseball fanatic thought nothing could top the magical evening, D-Backs legend Luis Gonzalez came by to visit. “I can’t believe they are making such a fuss over me!” she gushes.
“She will never forget this,” says Adams. “At Hospice of the Valley, we’re honored to help make our patients’ dreams come true. We are so grateful to be part of this tremendous night.”
Contact the team to learn more about the D-backs Wishes for Seniors program. To learn more about Hospice of the Valley, call (602) 530-6900 or visit hov.org.

Health Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing Offer Resources, Support for Seniors with Hearing Loss
By Sherri Collins
Most of us know someone who has hearing loss. Some of you may be experiencing hearing loss yourself. Oftentimes people dismiss signs of hearing loss as “no big deal.” In reality, hearing loss is a very big deal. Hearing loss can impact all the areas of your life, including relationships, health, and safety. It can also be linked to depression and memory loss, an early indicator of dementia.
While the likelihood of developing dementia exists, there are ways to prevent hearing loss: • Protect your ears. Keep music or TV volumes low, especially when you are wearing headphones. If you have headphones on and someone else can hear your music, the volume is too high.
• Don’t ignore your hearing loss. If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, see a hearing healthcare professional right away to start combating the symptoms.
• Tackle the hearing loss head on. Don’t assume hearing loss will go away on its own. It won’t. The sooner you get assistance with your hearing loss, the more likely you are to possibly prevent early dementia.
• Utilize technology. If you have a hearing aid, wear it as much as possible. You can also consider other hearing interventions including cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, amplified telephones, or captioning.
ACCESS TO RESOURCES
As you begin to age, access to valuable resources is critically important. However, an Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) survey found that older adults report that they are concerned with where to find these resources. Survey respondents indicated that they need information on general health and wellness as well as information on memory loss and dementia, pharmacy benefits, and access to mental health services. Other important resources mentioned included assistance with maintaining their
independence, access to caregivers fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and access to attorneys and estate planners.
As such, ACDHH is launching its Age of Access initiative designed to be a one-stop destination for resources, information, and programming for Arizona’s older adults who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss. An online survey is in the field right now to gain additional information regarding the needs of the community and how best to provide access to these resources. Take it here: https://bit.ly/acdhhsenior.
Respondents that participated in preliminary research conducted by Gallaudet University indicated that there is a lack of access to home health care aides (caregivers) that can sign or have awareness about deaf people’s needs. Therefore, in the fall of 2023, ACDHH, in partnership with the university, will conduct focus groups on this as well.
Sherri Collins is the executive director for the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing. For more information, visit acdhh.org.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal IN THEATERS
“Evil Dead Rise”
A small family is trapped in their apartment building when a demonic force is unleashed with the ability to possess.
While the “Evil Dead” series may not be a regular topic of conversation among the general public, its deep roots in the horror genre and accessibility for newcomers make it truly special. “Rise” continues this legacy, embracing the more serious tone of the original film and the 2013 iteration, while maintaining the distinctive excess of content and action that sets the series apart. This is a hard-hitting piece that conveys the pain and terror of its characters in a way that will make you cringe. Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan deliver stunning performances as sisters, with Sutherland’s compelling portrayal of a possessed character and Sullivan’s heroic essence reminiscent of Ash and Mia, while also bringing motherhood themes into focus. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat, holding nothing back, which is a major plus. It stands as a worthy addition to one of the greatest horror series of all time.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
The Guardians must face their greatest enemy yet to save one of their own.
James Gunn is a constant reminder of the creative possibilities inherent in the comic book film genre. Despite certain shortcomings, the third installment of his Guardians saga is among his most compelling work to date. Gunn escalates the level of intense action and mature content in a way that complements the overall narrative and tone, while still harmonizing with the previous films. It’s the empathetic core of the story that keeps us invested, as the cast subtly conveys their characters’ growth through nuanced changes in their movements and vocal inflections. Importantly, the film remains clear about its identity and effectively concludes the overarching themes of the trilogy. It’s a truly remarkable piece.
“Hypnotic”
A detective uncovers a supernatural element in the search for his daughter.
“Hypnotic” is a film that, despite having ample talent both on-screen and behind the scenes, struggles to achieve its ultimate, yet confused, objective. Director Robert Rodriguez, known for infusing style and charisma into his low-budget projects, seems to fall short here, with the film’s low-cost aesthetic lacking the charm of his previous works. The cast, including
usually impressive actors like Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, appear disengaged or unenthusiastic about the story, though William Fitchner gives a notably overthe-top performance. The film aims for complexity in its structure but ends up being more incoherent and confusing, and its attempts to draw parallels with filmmaking feel underdeveloped. There’s a glimmer of an intriguing concept in the third act, but it’s undermined by a hurried conclusion. Overall, it’s an unfortunate squandering of potential and talent.
satisfy both hardcore fans and casual viewers, even though the ending may leave some yearning for more.

By now, fans know what to expect from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and “Fast X” delivers the anticipated thrills, albeit in a somewhat overstuffed package. The consistently strong performers (Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang) maintain their high standards, while others (Ludacris, Gibson) have yet to master their craft, even after two decades. The film’s abrupt shifts between narratives, some of which appear only briefly before a lengthy absence, may disrupt its flow. Nevertheless, the film’s charisma and action sequences help propel it forward. In terms of the latter, Louis Leterrier masterfully orchestrates some of the series’ most audacious stunts, managing to balance fight scenes, varied vehicle chases, and shootouts to prevent repetition during the film’s extensive run time of nearly two and a half hours. The editing truly shines in these moments, producing a solid action film that should

BUY A SEAT, NOT THE JET WITH SET JET: A New Era of Luxurious Private Air Travel
By Sondra Barr
Have you ever dreamt of the celebrity-like experience of private jet travel, yet shuddered at the costs associated with it? Set Jet, a membership-based private jet charter program, is here to rewrite that narrative and take you on a luxurious journey across the skies.
Promising an unforgettable in-flight experience at a cost that rivals first-class commercial tickets, Set Jet is proving to be a game-changer in the world of aviation. Their concept is simple yet ingenious: “Buy a seat, not the jet.” This approach welcomes you to a community of likeminded individuals seeking the same top-notch, secure, safe, and comfortable private travel experience.
Set Jet’s private jet experience is genuinely tailored to your needs. Each aircraft in the fleet - five meticulously crafted Bombardier Challenger 850s - offers distinctive aesthetics and is outfitted with top-of-the-line finishes and amenities. This particular aircraft was handpicked for its unmatched comfort, safety, and efficiency, ensuring an unparalleled experience for Set Jet members.
Set Jet has two main service hubs with planes based in both Scottsdale at the Scottsdale Airport and Las Vegas at Harry Reid International with regular routes to Cabo San Lucas, Orange County, Aspen, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and Los Angeles via LAX, Burbank, and Van Nuys.
But the unique value of Set Jet goes beyond the flight. Membership immerses you in a rich tapestry of perks and benefits from elite partners in hospitality, fine dining, transportation, retail, health and wellness, private clubs, and more. Imagine enjoying exclusive dining experiences at renowned spots like Café Monarch and Toca Madera in Scottsdale, or unwinding at lavish resorts like Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Resorts Collection in Deer Valley or a Pisces Group beachfront villa in Cabo San Lucas.
As a member, you also get to participate in an exclusive and natural networking milieu that’s difficult to replicate any other way. Whether you’re making lifelong friendships or striking monumental business deals, Set Jet acts as a catalyst for connection – magic in the sky!
The process of joining the Set Jet community is uncomplicated and streamlined. Submit your application online or with the help of member services representatives, process a one-time security fee of $99.95, complete your profile, secure your first month of membership, and you’re ready to start booking seats for your private jet experience.
Booking your flight is as easy as becoming a member, with options to schedule up to four months in advance or join an existing flight as late as 30 minutes before departure. Forget about dynamic pricing; the cost remains constant, whether you’re an early bird or a last-
minute flyer. Regional domestic flights are from $750 one-way and flights to Cabo San Lucas are from $1,330 one-way.
On the day of your flight, arrive at the private terminal just 20 minutes before departure or stop by earlier to take advantage of the spacious and luxurious VIP lounge. Then sit back, relax, and let the Set Jet team handle the rest. From complimentary valet to boarding, the service is seamless.
Once onboard, kickstart your vacation with a top-shelf beverage service complemented by premium snacks. Simply relax in the tranquility that only a private flight can offer.
And go ahead and skip the kennel or the pet sitter – Set Jet is super pet-friendly.
Set Jet’s headquarters is located at Scottsdale Airport, making it a breeze to connect with their team and address any queries you may have.
This is the era of democratizing luxury and Set Jet is at the forefront, delivering an exceptional and accessible private jet experience. Enjoy the pinnacle of air travel with Set Jet - a grand journey that truly belongs to you. So why wait? For more information or to get jet setting, visit setjet.com.
