Build Back Better Is Dead, But Your Chance to Secure Energy Independence Is Not

By Erick O’Donnell

“A

ll politics are local,” as a time-tested American saying goes. When considering climate change, the most urgent political issue of our time, we might instinctively balk at this old sawhorse. What, after all, could be less local a concern than the challenges posed by global warming? Yet a closer look reveals that regular people always have the power to effect major change if they are determined to do so, especially if they have the support of their community. All eyes were on the new administration over the past year as it tried to marshal support for its Build Back Better package of public investments—and for good reason. Among other provisions, the bill would have significantly enhanced incentives for green-energy investments, encouraging businesses and individuals to make the kinds of changes needed for the country to fulfill its carbon-reduction commitments. The plan stalled just before this past Christmas in the face of resistance from two Democratic senators. In explaining his refusal to back the bill, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin paid lip service to political ideals, but his considerable vested interest in the dying coal industry is hard to ignore. Kyrsten Sinema, one of our very own senators, remained enigmatic and noncommittal to the end, a puzzling stance toward a rare opportunity to harness her state’s most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But no matter what powerful politicians are doing (or, more to the point, not doing) on the national stage to counteract climate change, there is always something regular people can do. More than 200,000 homeowners in Arizona have already installed solar systems, which produce enough electrical output to power almost a million homes, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association, and Arizonans are only getting started. You can secure dependable, affordable energy for yourself and your family while contributing to clean-energy self-sufficiency for America. And the professionals at SunSolar Solutions, a locally owned full-service solar installer, want to help—even if politicians don’t. New energy initiatives would have been a boon to homeowners and to American green energy as a whole. But 26 percent of the cost of a solar system is still a big chunk of change for Uncle Sam to kick in, and it’s still available until the end of this year. It’s vital, however, that you act soon to take advantage of this temporary generosity because it’s only good for

systems that are placed in service before January 1, 2023. On that date, the credit drops to 22 percent. SunSolar Solutions focuses on maximizing value for customers by leveraging the tax incentive to the hilt. By installing the greatest possible number of panels on your roof, you maximize the amount of money that the U.S. government will be investing in the system and into your home. If the 100 percent design created a $10,000 subsidy, then the 150-percent design will produce a $15,000 subsidy. There is no limit to the size of the system and, therefore, the size of the tax credit. The result of a properly designed system is a lower monthly and annual cost for the household’s electricity. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Our projections show that the average solar customer can expect to save an estimated $50,000 to $100,000 over a 25-year period. Our customer testimonials show that SunSolar is focused on maximizing savings by harnessing the greatest amount of solar energy possible (and, along with it, the greatest tax savings possible). Another big advantage to making the switch to solar as soon as possible is that the system will have time to generate the power needed to knock down this summer’s electricity costs. High summer demand causes higher utility charges, putting pressure on a family’s budget, but if you choose to start your project soon, the system can be installed in time to produce those essential credits. If you act right away, your system could even generate a bit of a surplus over late spring and early summer, helping to further offset the cost of peak summer demand later. The most significant congressional action in a generation to bolster American green energy is dead, and that has serious implications for how quickly and effectively we as a nation can respond to climate challenge. But now is not a good time to throw up your hands and get cynical. It’s time to act. Remember: it’s not up to Joe Manchin whether America—or your household—secures the blessings of reliable, affordable, clean energy. It’s up to you. And SunSolar Solutions is here to help you make the transition. Contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

NORTH 32ND WILL SOON BE HOME TO A NEW THRIFT STORE WITH A PURPOSE: IDENTIFREED ATTIC, WHICH IS SLATED TO OPEN AT 13637 N. 32ND STREET EARLY THIS MONTH. Funds raised through the new thrift store will go directly to changing the lives of women who

The organization behind the new thrift shop is a nonprofit called IdentiFreed. This parachurch evangelistic nonprofit was founded by the husbandand-wife duo of Carrie Bradley and Rodney Pieres. The two have a passion for helping those who are suffering from addiction and homelessness because they’ve experienced those hardships as well. “The IdentiFreed Attic location will not only serve as a place where the public can go to purchase affordable clothes, but it will be a place where the women it serves can go to access computers to look for jobs, learn interviewing skills, as well as receive clothes for potential job interviews,” Bradley shares. The idea behind IdentiFreed Attic began when Bradley and Pieres wanted a way to support the work they already do with IdentiFreed, which includes outreach

and support to trafficking victims, the homeless, and others in need. Once open, 100% of the profits from IdentiFreed Attic will go toward supporting their outreach efforts. To learn more, visit IdentiFreed.org or e-mail info@identiFreed.org.

Crews Complete All Major Work on Loop 101 Widening Project New lanes, improvements finished along 13 miles of Pima Freeway Photo Courtesy of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) THE FINAL MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE LOOP 101 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE LAST SCHEDULED FULL WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR LANE-MARKING WORK, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT). ADOT’s $185 million project, which started in January 2019, has added a fourth regular (general purpose) lane in each direction along 13 miles of Loop 101. Drivers have already been experiencing improved traffic flow along the wider freeway for several months while crews focused attention on other neces4 • February 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

sary work such as interchange enhancements, the addition of permanent, easier-to-see lane stripes, and the sealing of concrete deck joints. Other improvements added during the Loop 101 project include: • Wider bridges above cross streets, the Central Arizona Project canal and area washes. • A new Loop 101 overpass above the city of Scottsdale’s planned Miller Road extension. • New freeway lighting and signs. • Noise barriers in areas where they are warranted. • New landscaping in several areas. • On- and off-ramps at interchanges reconstructed to fit the profile of the wider freeway.

As with other freeway construction projects, crews will oversee a required landscape establishment period and take care of any other minor work. Drivers are asked to continue to stay alert for workers or equipment in the area.

The Loop 101 Improvement Project has been funded as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.

Love Live Music? Check Out the New AZLMC Open Mic Night By Gwen Jorgenson and Jenna-Lee Neff Photos Courtesy of the Arizona Live Music Cooperative NORTH 32ND FOLK MUSIC FANS ARE INVITED TO COME TOGETHER FOR OPEN MIC NIGHTS EVERY MONDAY AT 6:30 P.M., SPONSORED BY THE ARIZONA LIVE MUSIC COOPERATIVE (AZLMC). The nonprofit organization has partnered with Genesis Church to give local musicians a venue in response to the reduction of live performances in the past two years. “This one is all about the music and giving the music community in the Valley a stage and an audience,” says Glen Gardner, local musician and cofounder of the AZLMC. “It’s not a bar or restaurant, but a dedicated listening room with a stage, professional sound, video, and an appreciative audience.” Because performing in front of a live audience is enjoyable and beneficial for both the singer and the listener,

AZLMC’s mission is to provide performance opportunities to musicians and to encourage the spiritual healing power of music. Musicians of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to attend the open mic nights at the church, where Gardner drives the event as the sound engineer. Providing professional sound equipment, he takes the audience through each performer’s two song rotation. The music selections by the artists vary from original compositions, folk standards, spoken-word performances, and a cappella. Musicians bring a variety of acoustic guitars, electric guitars, harmonicas, and banjos. “We very much appreciate the support of the folks at Genesis Church,” Gardner says. “They share our vision of music as a healing force in a time when it’s an especially important lifeline for many.” Musicians wishing to perform can sign up at 6 p.m. each Monday, with doors opening to the public at 6:30 p.m.

Genesis Church, located at 13625 N. 32nd Street, is smoke- and alcohol-free. Respect for the venue is requested. All donations collected at the door benefit local recovery programs. “Many music venues have closed over the past couple of years,” says Gardner. “We thought it was important to have a place where local musicians could play and be appreciated.” Gardner’s career has centered on music. He has played with several successful bands, had a radio morning show, and now refurbishes high-quality guitars. He works with AZLMC co-founder Cowboy Wrecks, a singer, song writer, and the production engineer. Each week he produces the video recorded event for YouTube and SoundCloud.com. “This group of musicians are outstanding in their talent as well as spirit,” says Cowboy Wrecks. “We sincerely love having a wide variety of artists of all levels. All are welcome.”

Phoenix City Council Approves Water Conservation Plan Information and Photo Courtesy of the City of Phoenix RECENTLY, THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO ALLOW THE CITY TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE CENTRAL ARIZONA WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT IN RESPONSE TO CONTINUING DECLINES IN WATER SUPPLIES IN LAKE MEAD ON THE COLORADO RIVER. The agreement, known as the 500+ Plan, involves the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and stakeholders in Arizona, California, and Nevada. The goal is to add 500,000 acrefeet of additional water to Lake Mead each year through 2026. The plan is projected to add approximately 16 feet of water to the reservoir, which continues to reach record low levels. Those targets will require agreement participants to do without certain amounts of their Colorado River allotments. In exchange for a reduction in water delivery, the parties will receive financial compensation. “The City of Phoenix recognizes the seriousness of a declining Colorado River, and this action is representative 6 • February 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

of the collaborative regional efforts that are necessary to address the challenge of water scarcity and drought,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a desert community that prioritizes sustainable growth, and the funds saved through this plan will contribute to identifying, innovating and piloting solutions to increase water use efficiency and promote conservation.” Phoenix will receive compensation in the amount of $4,163,765.97 for a contribution in 2022 of 15,977 acrefeet. The money will come from Central Arizona Water Conservation District and will be used to implement water conservation programs. The city will consider additional contributions in subsequent years on a caseby-case basis. “This short-term action is important because it represents quick thinking and collaboration among water users in the Southwest,” says Phoenix District 1 Councilwoman Ann O’Brien, who also is a member of the Board of Directors for Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA). “Ultimately, the answer is a long-term adaptation to a hotter, drier future, which must include more efficient use of water.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Community Art Project at PVCC Honors Indigenous People PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS HONORING THE INDIGENOUS TRIBES WHO ONCE LIVED IN AND AROUND THE COLLEGE’S UNION HILLS CAMPUS. This is the second ceramics project in a series of art projects requested by PVCC President Dr. Paul Dale, who envisions thoughtful and provoking artwork campus-wide in the coming years. The first, unveiled last spring, was a series of wall murals depicting the college’s eight core values. “The Piipaash, also known as the Maricopa people, along with the Salt River Authm people lived in the area before the modern era,” explains Dustin Lopez, a PVCC alumni and Native American artist chosen to lead this project alongside David Bradley, a PVCC art professor. “This is a chance to offer history and knowledge about the people who lived here before us.”

Sarkisov & Roesch PLLC

The ceramic mural, titled Water is Life, depicts the struggle humans face with water contamination and shortage. The idea stems from the Dakota pipeline protests along the Colorado River, which shed light on the pipeline’s impact on the environment and to sites sacred to Native Americans. Indigenous nations around the country opposed the pipeline, along with the Sioux tribal nations. “Water is the center of our being and existence. Coming together and coexisting with the other animals is important for the future generations,” says Lopez about his inspiration for the mural.

Lopez graduated from PVCC’s EMT and fire program in 2009 and worked as a firefighter until retiring in 2020. He has always been interested in celebrating his heritage and culture as an artist since he was child. He grew up in Prescott, born of the Red Streaks Running

Through the Water and born for the Red Corn People of the Seama Village, and he often visited his grandmother on the Navajo reservation. In 2012, he started working in his community with the tribes and at-risk youth, specifically indigenous kids who got into trouble for graffiti. “Indigenous people have been writing on walls for years, telling stories and strengthening their identity,” he explains. “I help to educate these kids, teaching them the fundamentals of art, creating murals to tell their stories versus tagging random markings. I give them the platform and education to reinforce their identities.” Together, Lopez, Bradley, and graphic designer Kaily Toney are leading a team of volunteers in the early stages of developing the Water is Life ceramic mural. Toney is a member of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian community and was brought into the project by Lopez. The project is open to the public and is seeking additional volunteer input to help erect the mural. For those interested in getting involved, the group meets every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at PVCC’s Union Hills campus (located at 18401 N. 32nd Street) while school is in session. Charity Arizona Gives Day Registration Deadline Nears for Local Nonprofits

Arizona Gives Day raised a record $7.1 million for nonprofits in 2021 FEBRUARY 28 IS THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR LOCAL NONPROFITS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN ARIZONA GIVES DAY, THE 24-HOUR ONLINE FUNDRAISING EVENT, FROM NOON ON APRIL 5 UNTIL NOON ON APRIL 6. Since 2013, Arizona Gives has raised more than $30 million for nonprofits statewide, setting a single-year record in 2021 by raising $7.1 million. Presented by FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good,” Arizona Gives is hosted by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum. Re-enrollment and payment of a refundable registration fee is required and can be completed at azgives.org/eligibility. Registrants receive access to workshops and training, marketing and graphics toolkit, and can fundraise all year on AZGives.org. The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits’ Senior Vice President and Director of Development Jennifer Purcell shares that new features rolled out in the past year

include peer-to-peer fundraising, an earlygiving leaderboard, and a collective listing of events and volunteer opportunities for viewing in one place. “These features were created to encourage year-round use of the website and assist with connecting the community with nonprofit organizations of interest,” Purcell says. “This year, returning participants can take advantage of special QR codes, donate buttons to imbed on a website, and an auto-generated repeating donation feature to encourage previous donors to give again.” Arizona Gives unites nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. Arizona Gives helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously to create a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit, an IRS Determination Letter, the most current completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s

operating budget, and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations. Arizona Gives provides virtual workshops to assist in making each participant’s fundraising experience a success. Workshops take place through March. Registrants can participate in real time or view the recording later. “Arizona Gives offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for year-round giving and for donors to create personal fundraiser campaigns,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. New 2022 campaign features for nonprofits include: • New ways for nonprofits to direct traffic to their Arizona Gives Day profiles including options for an embeddable donation button and QR code. • Ability to send thank-you emails directly from the Arizona Gives Day platform. • An option for the peer fundraiser page “hero image” to be either static or as a video.

• Ability for nonprofits to link to their Vimeo videos in addition to YouTube. • A new Repeat Your Donation feature which enables donors to review previous donations and then make that specific donation again or add to it with a click of a button. For interested donors, AzGives.org offers an advanced search filter to find nonprofits by specific criteria, area of focus, and which donations may qualify as an Arizona tax credit. In addition to creating a fundraiser page, donors also can create a donor account to set up recurring donations, track their giving throughout the year, or they may simply check out as a guest. Complete information, including answers to important questions about Arizona Gives Day, can be found at AZGives.org.

Pekarek grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, which was where his love for animals was sparked. After moving to Arizona 22 years ago, he felt like his heart was being pulled to work with nonprofit organizations, so he started working with a nonprofit that raised funds for underprivileged children.

He originally started his farm with just two miniature horses that he rescued from a slaughter pen. He then started taking the horses to nursing homes, memory care centers, and anywhere else that desired animal-assisted therapy. Fast forward a few years and the Happy Hooves operation has grown to house over 20 animals ranging from miniature horses, to alpacas, to a Barbados Blackbelly sheep. With his organization growing, Pekarek decided to shift from the old model of transporting animals off-site to now mostly offering the therapy on site at the Happy Hooves farm. Pekarek started offering virtual tours of his farm to people from all over the world who want to learn more about the animals. After the past few years of trying out different business ventures and ways to expand the farm, Happy Hooves has grown in popularity and become a hotspot for people looking to volunteer. The farm has a steady flow of volunteers; from those that help a couple times a year to others who help out every week. “I don’t want people to have the presumption that it’s going to be about mucking stalls, picking up poop, and filling up water troughs and hay bags,” he says. “I like to keep it open where people can find what they enjoy doing while working with the animals.” To learn more about Happy Hooves, including how to sign up to volunteer, visit happyhoovesaz.org.

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! roll-off dumpster business. Other than that, I am a homebody.

HI, MY NAME IS… Cindy Morgan. I am the owner of Shadow Mountain Auto Service alongside my husband, Curt Morgan. I’VE HAD MY BUSINESS IN NORTH 32ND FOR 13 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The people in the area are such nice people that it makes what we do enjoyable. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Working at Shadow Mountain Auto Service (shadowmountainauto.com) and handling our Redbox+

MY FAMILY IS… The glue of my soul. I do not have a large family but those who are in my family, including friends, is what life is about. Without them my life would not have the meaning and fulfillment it does. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Enjoying the wildlife of the outdoors. My home is located near the base of a mountain, so I love to watch all the critters that enjoy our backyard each day.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Ready Player One.” My husband Curt and I can watch that movie regularly and never get tired of it. It is fun and you can just relax and go with it. It also has so many great 80s and 90s references and you see more each time you watch it. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WANTED TO BE… A horse trainer. I know, I sound like so many girls when we were young! I never went that route as it was a tough industry to get into not growing up in that world. So instead, I went into media for several years and then worked at an animal hospital before opening Shadow Mountain Auto Service. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT WOULD BE… “B*itch” by Meredith Brooks. I have always liked that song and I know all the words, too.

THE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My husband. He is my rock and is there for me no matter what. He is my biggest cheerleader and I wouldn’t be who I am without him and his complete support of me. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My team at Shadow Mountain Auto Service. They are great and make me laugh every day. Laughter is such an important part of life, and it makes my heart happy that the shop is such an upbeat place. THE PERFECT DAY… Is chilling at home with my husband. We are dorks and have a great time running around the house entertaining each other. My favorite place to be away from home is the sand dunes where we drive our off-road vehicles side by side.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Vet Tix. It is a nonprofit organization that helps veterans with tickets to all kinds of fun events. Michael Focareto and his team have done such tremendous work over the years for our veterans, and he is also part of the North 32nd community! THE BEST GIFT I EVER RECEIVED WAS… Having my daughter Alexis. She is now in her 20s and is such a wonderful, kindhearted, and strong individual. We are very close and I am beyond thankful for that and the love that we share. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… To take off in our motorhome for two years and hit every Nascar track while seeing so much of this amazing country. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED… You are never a failure if you never quit. My motto is that “attitude is everything.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Are Those Over 65 Going to Solve the Housing Shortage? By Louisa Ward, Realtor

T

alk to almost anyone in America about surging home prices and you’ll come around to the trilliondollar question: Are we in a housing bubble? The answer is that we are in a housing shortage, not bubble. MOST ECONOMISTS FORECAST A CONTINUED STRONG SELLERS’ MARKET In the long run, the party won’t go on forever, but it will absolutely go on for the next five to 10 years. “Millennials are driving the housing market, and even Gen X and Baby Boomers are looking for places to live—so that’s all healthy demand,” says Ralph McLaughlin, chief economist at Kukun, a real estate analytics company, in a recent “Forbes” article. Demand for homes doesn’t look great beyond 2039 because birth rates are falling, and the older Baby Boomers (1945-1955) and Silent Generation (19251945) are dying. ANALYST WHO PREDICTED HOUSING CRISIS RINGS WARNING BELL AGAIN Ivy Zelman, an analyst who predicted the 2008 housing crisis as early as 2005 worries that there won’t be enough people in the near future to buy all the houses we’re building. Falling fertility rates, and aging population, are the main drivers of a declining population and new household formation. If the population decreases, then the future housing demand will likely be much less. The senior population, the Baby Boomers and Silent Generation, are a large sector, and when today’s children grow up to be old enough to live on their own, the senior population will be greatly reduced due to deaths in this large sector. Therefore, the number of future adults needing housing will be much lower.

The chart on this page shows the high percentage of population in the Baby Boomers and how population growth has been declining since.

SAME DAY SERVICE ALL WORK GUARANTEED

Did you know that, in 1950, women were having an average of 4.7 children in their lifetime? The fertility rate, the average number of children a woman gives birth to, is falling. If the number falls below approximately 2.1, then the size of the population starts to fall. First, many initial Baby Boomer deaths will occur to married couples, leaving the surviving spouse to continue to head a household. Many deaths will also occur to people who do not head a household, but rather live in a household headed by children or other relatives, or in assisted living or nursing facilities. Even though this will be a decrease in population spread out over many decades, the rate of natural increase (births minus deaths) is projected to fall dramatically. Affinity Wealth Advisory Group: How to Handle Market Volatility us in place. The choice is ever constant – stay the course By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor, or stop the uneasiness. he exhilarating anticipation of ticking up the roller coaster is quickly followed by the screams of the downward spiral to its eventual stop. We know the ride, yet we will stay the course because we know the ride will end – not just because we are locked in our seats for the duration. Understanding the outcome helps us tolerate the ride, and even enjoy most of it. But if you add uncertainty, the ride has a different feeling. No matter how often you tell yourself the ride will end, the uncertainty creates emotions. As an investor, you may read about the ups and downs of the stock market and it may feel like a roller coaster. History shows us that previous market corrections have ended. Yet even armed with the data, your emotions seem to contradict your good judgement. This internal conflict may cause you to flip day to day from staying the course and ignoring uncertainty or selling off to reduce the risk. If we look at historical charts of the markets, we can project ahead to presume the outcome of the current correction. This is volatility. Volatility is a statistical measure of standard deviation or dispersion of returns. What it means to you is the experience of the daily fluctuations of your holdings or your account balance. It creates emotions as we see what has happened and we project the uncertainty in our thoughts of what is yet to come. Did you know that the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) created a volatility index (VIX), which is a measurement of the markets expected future volatility? Does your financial advisor discuss volatility with you and prepare you for market corrections?

A common practice before developing an investment portfolio is to quantify your risk by completing a risk questionnaire or risk quiz to determine your personal risk tolerance. Your personal risk tolerance is the amount of volatility you are willing to accept. Market volatility as we have recently experienced may cause you to rethink what you are truly willing to accept in relation to risk. A word of caution – risk tolerance should not be tied to short-term experiences or emotions. Risk tolerance is a representation of your willingness to accept risk, or volatility. During periods of volatility, some are inclined to second guess their risk tolerance. Financial experts encourage investors to make long-term decisions, not market cycle decisions. If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act. Time in the market has historically offered greater success than timing the markets.

To you, market volatility may be very strong emotions of the threat of losing something important to you. Money helps provide a lifestyle and sense of security, which is important to most of us. Show Some Love to Your Family this Valentine’s Day

Kids’ Corner

“T

By Nadine Bubeck

here is only one happiness in life: to love and be loved.”

Valentine’s Day is a reminder that affection and unconditional love can make children emotionally happier and boost their confidence. Sure, it’s a time to celebrate the love you share with your significant other, but it’s also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of loving — and being loved — within the family. Here are seven ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. AFFIRMATION HEARTS Leave a heart on your child’s door each day of February until Valentine’s Day with something you love about them. Be specific in your compliments to make them feel extra special. Address their inner beauty: what makes them a good kid, sibling, son, daughter, student, etc. This is so easily done, nearly free and incredibly rewarding.

PLAN SOME QUALITY TIME Especially true for parents with multiple kids, individual time with each child can be hard to come by. Plan a date with each of your kids separately—truth be told, time is the greatest gift we could give someone. Honor their interests; for example, if one of your children loves art, take a parent-and-child painting class. If another child loves sports, allot time to picnic in the park and play catch. It doesn’t need to be over the top. REVERSE THE ROLES Let the kids play parents for the night. Allow them to cook you and your significant other dinner and dessert— you’ll be surprised how much they’ll enjoy role-playing waiter and waitress. Suggest they make you Valentine’s Day cards and decorate the dinner table with heart-infused drawings. Date night at home courtesy of the kids—score! If you don’t have a partner, let your kids oversee a night out for your family or you and your bestie. Love comes in all forms.

SCHEDULE A FAMILY DATE NIGHT Whether it’s movie night, game night, or craft night, celebrate Valentine’s Day by doing something special in the comfort of home. Order pizza, make popcorn, and wear PJs, and simply enjoy being in one another’s company. For dessert, decorate heart-shaped cookies.

different kinds of love. There are so many kid-friendly books on the topic, too!

DELIVER VALENTINES Chances are your kids will be making Valentines for all their classmates, but you can take this a step further by making Valentines for friends and family. In fact, you can also show the community some love by delivering cookies to your local fire station or police department. Practicing appreciation is a good lesson of love to teach your kids.

CONSIDER THE SIMPLE THINGS Sure, there are so many cliches when it comes to V-Day, but sometimes the most important Valentine’s Day message isn’t in the form of something monetary. As parents, all we want is to make sure our kids feel safe, secure, and loved, but how can we do that aside from telling them we love them? Simple ideas include showing physical affection, reading together, and showing enthusiasm in what they’re talking about, what they’re doing, etc. Let them dream, listen to their dreams, and encourage them to work toward pursuing them. Show your family some love this Valentine’s Day and every day.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Kids learn most from their parents and caregivers, so for them to learn love, they must be shown love. If you’re in a romantic relationship, show them photos and talk about it. If you’re not, point to friendships and other relationships and talk about the

Possible Health Insurance Benefits with a Naturopathic Physician By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician

oard certified and licensed naturopathic physicians in the state of Arizona are not typically contracted with insurance companies and therefore do not accept insurance for office visits. The good news is that many patients can utilize some of their insurance benefits. I always recommend that patients contact their insurance company prior to visits to inquire about possible coverage.

OUT OF NETWORK CLAIMS Some insurance companies may consider naturopathic physicians as out-of-network providers. Insurance companies may be able to reimburse you for partial or all your visits with proper documentation. At the time of your visit, you will be provided with the necessary forms, which include Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and diagnostic codes (ICD-10). You can submit these forms along with your receipt to your insurance for possible reimbursement. This may be a mail-in form or an online form with uploaded documentation and receipts. The reimbursement amount will depend on your specific plan. HSA/FSA Some insurance plans offer a Health Spending Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA). These accounts can be used to pay for naturopathic visits at the time of service and may also be used for nutritional supplement purchases and specialty labs. Any extra documentation can be provided and approval will be dependent on your specific plan.

the preferred labs for most insurance companies here in Arizona. If you do not carry private insurance or do not have lab work or imaging coverage, there are cash pay options available depending on your specific needs. Specialty labs such as Food Sensitivity IgG testing, Comprehensive Stool Analysis and others are not covered by insurance and are either paid at the time of purchase or directly to the specific specialty laboratory. MEDICARE/MEDICAID AND AHCCCS Naturopathic physicians are not eligible to be providers with Medicare/Medicaid as well as state insurance (AHCCCS). Due to this, there are no options for possible reimbursement of visit costs. Unfortunately, there is no laboratory or imaging coverage if ordered by a naturopathic physician. In this situation, labs can be ordered at cash pay facilities for reasonable pricing. To inquire more regarding possible insurance reimbursement options with a naturopathic physician, contact your insurance company or call my office at 480-448-8888. Valentine’s Day and Planning for Those You Love By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

V

alentine’s Day is here again, and we may have given our loved ones the usual gifts – roses, chocolates, or a lovely dinner out. Valentine’s Day gifts let our spouse and family know just how dear they are to us. Another way to show our family we care is to get a Will or Trust in place. Many of my clients come to put a plan in place after a stressful and difficult time handling the estate of a parent, sibling or other loved one who didn’t plan ahead. Going through the exhausting process of a probate court proceeding has shown them just how important an estate plan is to the family. A proper estate plan makes it much easier on your loved ones if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a proper estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family will have an expensive and timeconsuming ordeal ahead of them, and worse, they may end up fighting. HAVING A PROPER PLAN MEANS YOU AVOID SOME OF THESE BIG MISTAKES: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by 60 percent of Arizonans. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The state of Arizona has one for you, but it may not be what you want. Put your own plan

Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert: Sometimes we need to call in experts. We don’t know what we don’t know. We wouldn’t perform our own surgery, and it’s wise to hire a lawyer for your estate plan as well. An attorney who focuses on estate planning knows the ins and outs of the law and can suggest provisions for your plan that you don’t even know about. If you don’t use an attorney and make a serious mistake, it may be too late when your family finds out.

you to get to know Libby, our Estate Planning attorney and talk about your unique situation and what plan will best fit your needs. Remember, when you choose Libby you are not only hiring someone to prepare your Estate Plan, you are choosing a seasoned Estate Planning attorney to guide you through this often complex process and raise questions you might not have considered. You are choosing an experienced professional to create a plan that serves your family in the way that you want and, after you are gone, a trusted advisor that your loved ones can depend on.

Keeping your “older-than-the-hills” estate plan: Good for you if you did a Will when your children were born, but if they now have their own children, it is time to update your plan. If your assets have grown, you may want to consider a trust, and rethink how you are leaving your assets to your heirs. Laws changed in Arizona in 2008, and estate taxes have changed over the years and continue to change. It is important to keep your plan current.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal

IN THEATERS

The director does a good job showing us their lives day by day as they continue to destroy themselves and each other, convinced some salvation still awaits them. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and tragic all at once—the best kind of film.

chase scenes and kills, but the writing only provides laughable connections to the original film and the usual “Scream” archetypes, giving their actors little to work with (though Jack Quaid and Jenna Ortega stand out well). By the end, it leaves you feeling, if not empty, unfulfilled, and sad watching all that talent wasted.

filmmaking and performances feel better made for the stage than film.

COMING SOON

ON APPLE TV+ “Nightmare Alley” A con man’s rise and fall told in two acts, from the circus to the highest part of society, as he schemes his way with his fake psychic powers. Guillermo del Toro has always made films that can best be described as dark fairy tales, with their heightened sense of reality and unique designs and visuals. With his new film, he changes it up, slamming the film into harsh, wet reality, with only his heightened production design remaining. “Nightmare Alley” is a cold, bleak movie with little hope or light to be found as we watch our characters kill, cheat, and abandon each other for their gain. The actors perfectly reach their different levels of habitability, watching them slowly get further into the underbelly of the world they live in. Slow is a good word to describe this movie, one that wants you to experience every second of its ugly reality. It’s a watch that requires you to be patient, but if you stick with it, it rewards you well. “Red Rocket” A down-and-out actor’s journey to success as he moves back to his hometown. The events in “Red Rocket” are like a very humorous accident, one you can’t look away from as it gets worse and worse. Simon Rex’s performance as Mikey Saber is one of the best “scumbag” lead characters I’ve seen in recent years; a character that completely lacks selfawareness and is filled with delusions of grandeur. The supporting cast is filled with other colorful characters played by all sorts of discoveries by Sean Baker. 24 • February 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

February 4 • “Moonfall” “Scream” Twenty-five years after the original murders, a new killer arrives, forcing the original survivors to unite with a new generation to stop them. I’m likely biased in this case as, outside of the fourth film, I’ve never really cared for “Scream” and only saw this new film due to the involvement of the filmmakers behind 2019’s excellent horror-comedy “Ready Or Not.” With this new installment, you get a meta take on legacy sequels and their family relations in typical “Scream” fashion (even despite the new directors and writers). As per usual with these movies (beyond the surprisingly clever fourth film from 2011), it’s obnoxious, to say the least and doesn’t have anything of intrigue to bring up. The directors do bring some good set pieces with the

• “Jackass Forever” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” A retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic play. As an exercise in visuals, Joel Coen’s solo debut as a director works. The minimalist production design is a sight to behold and, mixed with the black and white photography, it reminds one of classic German expressionism. Beyond that, if you’ve seen a prior version of Macbeth you’ve basically seen this one, as there’s little that this version offers to differ from prior versions. The main difference is the bigger stars than other film adaptations, and unfortunately, the main two leads, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, are miscast and don’t fit the devious nature of the characters. The other actors fare better, but the

Experience an Oasis of Tranquility at Royal Palms Resort and Spa THE PERFECT LOCAL ESCAPE FOR RELAXATION, ROMANCE, AND RICH ARIZONA HISTORY

R

oyal Palms Resort and Spa is one of the most sought-after resort experiences in the Valley, combining the graciousness and sophistication of a Mediterranean villa with the intimacy and privacy of a secluded luxury retreat. The resort was originally built in 1929 as El Vernadero, a wellness retreat for Cunard Steamship executive and financier Delos Cooke and his wife. The Cookes modeled their home and architecture after their beloved European adventures and used much of their income to purchase and plant rare flora, including 900 palms, many imported from Egypt. The original mansion still sits at the center of the resort today. Following Cooke’s 1931 death, the estate changed hands several times until visionary Al Stovall purchased the property in the 1940s. Stovall and his partners guided the estate’s transition from private home to inn, adding 15 casitas and converting the main house into several additional guest rooms, a reception area, and dining space. In 1948, the Royal Palms Inn officially opened to guests, and the first reservations were recorded. Local businessman Fred Unger purchased the property in 1995 and was responsible for the hotel’s 1996-1997 restoration, which brought to life the property today known as Royal Palms Resort and Spa. Royal Palms Resort boasts 119 beautifully appointed guest rooms, casitas, and luxury villas each designed to emulate a classic Spanish estate. Warm desert hues and rich woods are complemented by natural sunlight billowing through the windows with each room offering views of the perfectly manicured resort grounds. Deluxe rooms and suites boast breathtaking views of the iconic Camelback Mountain while the resort’s villas feature stone floors, fireplaces, and private patios for an added touch of serenity and luxury. A not-to-be-missed experience at Royal Palms Resort is the signature Alvadora Spa, an eight-room spa and wellness oasis that integrates the indoors and outdoors in a warm, welcoming environment. Alvadora Spa boasts an impressive treatment menu offering organic therapies and massages to help guests achieve the ultimate state of relaxation and restoration for both body and soul. Inspired by the property’s longstanding orange groves, citrusinspired signature treatments include the Citrus Ritual, which begins with a full body exfoliation with water gently cascading from above followed by relaxation in the spa’s garden tub and private patio area, concluding with a customized massage. The Orange Blossom Body Buff offers a full body

exfoliation with the spa’s signature scent of Neroli to soften and renew the skin and is completed with an orange blossom oil application. Offering views of Camelback Mountain and the resort’s mother-of-pearl swimming pool, Royal Palms Resort’s two-story fitness center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, including a Peloton bike to help guests stay active. For those looking to indulge in fitness and wellness experiences from the comfort of their own room, the resort’s Wellness on Demand program offers an evolving menu of classes like Barre, HIIT and yoga. The resort is also conveniently located to nearby running and biking trails. Perfect for sipping and savoring, Royal Palms Resort boasts multiple culinary concepts. T. Cook’s serves as the resort’s signature restaurant, offering the highest quality Mediterranean-inspired cuisine prepared by award-winning Executive Chef Lee Hillson. Commemorating its 25th anniversary this year, T. Cook’s celebrates hand-selected seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients with notes of regional influence from Northern Italy, Greece, and Spain. Additional food and beverage experiences include Mix Up, an elevated cocktail lounge serving garden-to-glass libations, and Via Cappello, a private dining experience named for a romantic residence in Verona, Italy. This Valentine’s Day, those looking for a romantic getaway can experience the resort’s Royal Romance package and Via Cappello dining experience. The package includes a special welcome amenity, daily breakfast for two, dinner credit to T. Cook’s, a rose petal turndown, and late checkout, which can be booked online. The Via Cappello dining experience is customized for couples to savor up to five chefinspired courses from T. Cook’s on a private patio or intimate garden setting complemented by rose petals and candles with special upgrades available. The experience can be booked by emailing Jeffrey Skalski at Jeffrey.Skalski@royalpalmshotel.com. This content is sponsored by Royal Palms Resort and Spa.

Royal Palms is located at 5200 East Camelback Road in Phoenix. For more information and to book a romantic getaway, visit royalpalmshotel.com or call 602-283-1234. myhyperlocalnews.com
