Cirque du Soleil's High-Flying Fabio! An acrobat's adventure from Brazil to Phoenix
Formy 10th birthday, my parents brought me to Las Vegas to see Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson ONE” and “Beatles LOVE.” They were so cool, creative, and colorful! Another Cirque show, “Corteo,” is coming to Phoenix. Since I love these shows, I got the chance to chat with one of the amazing acrobats: Fabio Luis Santos.
Fabio says that every Cirque experience brings a spectacular type of magic. Originally from Brazil, Fabio started doing gymnastics at age 9. He told me getting serious about gymnastics takes a lot of time, effort, and training.
Thanks to his awesome talent, Fabio joined the Cirque family and became part of their
shows. Now, in “Corteo,” he's a super cool acrobat who swings in mid-air from bar to bar.
“Corteo” is about a dreamer clown who travels to visit his friends. According to Fabio, the family-friendly show brings joy and happiness to the audience.
Fabio, along with other performers, says acrobatics can be a little scary, but it’s very fun. He trains a lot and eats healthy meals to stay fit, such as eggs, smoked salmon, and rice, beans, and meat - some of his favorites from growing up in Brazil. “Corteo” tours all over the world and Fabio says being a Cirque star is an adventure. He loves visiting Mexico, Japan, and California.
When Fabio is not on tour, he goes back to Brazil to hang out with his 9-year-old son, Theo. Theo is Fabio’s everything, and when he’s on tour, he misses his son very much. When they’re together, they enjoy skateboarding, surfing, and his son even does hip hop, so the dad-son duo dance together.
You can see “Corteo” in Phoenix from September 13 to 17 at Footprint Center, 201 E. Jefferson St., in Phoenix. For more information, visit footprintcenter.com/ events/cirque-du-soleil-corteo.

Peoria Senior Scores Perfect ACT Score Headliners

Ironwood High School
senior Violet Lageschulte achieved something few other students accomplish ––she earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT assessment test in all subject areas –English, math, reading, and science. More than 1.3 million students took the ACT test while only .313% achieved a perfect score in all subject areas.
Violet has always been a good test taker. She previously attended Copperwood Elementary School, also in the Peoria Unified School District, and participated in their Center for Differentiated Instruction program for gifted students. As a sixth grader, Violet traveled to Ironwood High School to take math. Although her future plans are still undecided, she has a strong interest in STEMrelated or cybersecurity fields.
The ACT is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions. While there have been more students meeting all four ACT College Readiness Benchmarks over the past several years, the average ACT composite has remained essentially unchanged. The national average composite score for 2022 was 19.8. The ACT is scored on a scale of one to 36, with 36 being the highest possible score.
Ridgeline Academy Student Wins Statewide History Essay Contest
Everyyear, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) encourage young minds to delve deep into the pages of history through their American History Essay Contest. The students of Ridgeline Academy, located at 33625 N. North Valley Pkwy., in Phoenix, have been active participants in this contest, as the local DAR chapter members visit the campus to engage with the fifth and sixth-grade students. The initiative not only introduces students to the Daughters of the American Revolution but also challenges them to reflect on a specific historical topic and craft an essay.
The American History Essay Contest was designed to stimulate young minds to think creatively about the nation's rich history and learn from it in a novel way. Each academic year, a new essay topic is selected, and guidelines are distributed. The competition is open to all students from grades fifth to eighth, and the submitted essays are evaluated based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.
Ridgeline Academy is thrilled to announce
that one of its own, sixth-grader Ella Favia, has been declared the state winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. The academy is incredibly proud of Ella's achievement and commends her for soaring high and representing the school at such a prestigious level.
The recognition of Ella’s work highlights the importance of encouraging students to engage with history actively. It reinforces the notion that a comprehensive understanding of the past is crucial for shaping a better future. Winning this contest is not only a personal achievement for Favia but also serves as an inspiration to her peers at Ridgeline Academy and students across the state.
Ridgeline Academy extends congratulations to Ella and expresses gratitude to the Daughters of the American Revolution for organizing the contest and providing an opportunity for students to explore history from a fresh perspective. The academy remains committed to encouraging its students to participate in similar educational initiatives and looks forward to celebrating more successes in the future. At just 11 years old, Maya Bernoff is making waves in the figure skating world with her exceptional talent and dedication. Her recent double victory at the U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase 2023 in Boston has cemented Maya’s status as one of the sport's rising stars.
Representing the Coyotes Skating Club of Arizona, this marked Maya's debut on the national stage. At the event, she showcased
her prowess across three competitions, securing two gold medals and a silver. Her standout performance included a first-place finish among 29 participants in one event, a second place standing out of 43 in another, and another gold from a group of 17 in the third event. Achieving such remarkable feats at her age underscores Maya's commitment and innate talent.
Outside the confines of the rink, Maya's accomplishments don't end. A disciplined regimen sees her at the rink both early mornings and postschool, highlighting her unwavering dedication to the sport. Beyond solo skating, Maya is also a member of the Ice Denettes synchronized skating team and a Theatre on Ice team, the latter of which secured a respectable sixth place in a national competition. Her interests aren't confined to skating alone. A Rancho Solano Preparatory School student, Maya takes vocal lessons, engages in student government, dances, and is deeply involved in community service, assisting underprivileged children. This young athlete's blend of talent, discipline, and compassion makes her not just a name to remember in the world of sports, but an inspiration to aspiring athletes and youngsters alike.

Great Hearts Glendale Academy Welcomes a Tail Wagging Source of Comfort

Thehalls of Great Hearts
Glendale Academy at 23276
N. 83rd Ave. have a new friendly face, and it's not your average student. Mabel, a yearold Bernedoodle, made her debut this school year, and she's quickly becoming a favorite among the student body.
The beginning of a school year can be daunting for students, especially with the challenges of adapting to a new environment, new faces, and academic pressures. Recognizing these stresses, the academy introduced Mabel, trained specifically to offer therapeutic support and comfort to students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
The therapeutic value of dogs in educational environments has been researched extensively, and the findings highlight numerous mental health benefits. Dogs like Mabel can help ease anxiety, provide a calming presence during emotional moments, and even boost overall positivity within school premises.
Mabel's role is not just restricted to occasional hallway strolls. She's been trained to identify and approach students who might be experiencing heightened emotions. Alongside this intuitive support,
Mabel also participates in reading circles, offering a furry cuddle to students who might need an additional touch of comfort.
"The response to Mabel has been overwhelming," shares a faculty member. "It's incredible to see the instant change in mood when students interact with her. She's more than just a pet; she's a companion offering solace during tough times."
For many students, especially those in the formative years of their education, adjusting to the school environment can be a challenge. Mabel's presence, with her tail wags and eager snuggles, promises a safe space for students to voice and process their emotions.
The academy's initiative to integrate therapy dogs into the educational milieu reflects a broader trend recognizing the importance of mental health in academic settings. As Mabel continues her journey at Great Hearts Glendale Academy, her impact is a testament to the positive change and comfort that therapy animals can bring to educational institutions.

Youngest Mackey Sibling Gets Her Chance to Be First Headliners
Photos courtesy of ASU Preparatory Academy
Shemay be the youngest of three siblings attending the same school, but there’s something about first grader Barbara Mackey that sets her apart from her older brothers. She –and 19 of her peers – are the school’s “founding students.”
They are the first cohort of students who will complete their entire elementary education, from kindergarten through sixth grade, at ASU Preparatory Academy’s Pilgrim Rest Elementary, which opened its doors for the first time in the fall of 2022.
For those familiar with the school’s curriculum, it may come as no surprise that Barbara recalls her favorite kindergarten memory is singing the “Good Morning” song with her teachers. Although she’ll also proudly tell you that she loves learning her “ABCs and 123s” and can even count up to 100.
The strong musical tradition of the Pilgrim Rest church is the inspiration behind an innovative jazz program at the school, which celebrates music education as a forum for expression but also a method for teaching elements of math and teamwork. Unlike the traditional school model, in which “specials” like music are offered just once or twice a week, students at Pilgrim Rest have multiple music and jazz touchpoints every week, including voice and musical instrument instruction.
When ASU Prep opened its newest elementary school for the 2022-23 school year, it was the culmination of months of collaboration and planning among ASU Prep, the Pilgrim Rest church community where the school is located, and local Black community leaders. Their purpose was to “coconstruct” a school that could serve as a trusted and intentional educational space where students and families could forge a path toward future success.
“I chose this school for its names,” says Lynn Mackey, Barbara’s mother, and First Lady at Pilgrim Rest. “ASU is known for academic excellence and is No. 1 in innovation. Pilgrim Rest is also known for excellence in the community and innovation itself. Seeing those two partners come together and being a community school connected with ASU, it was a no-brainer for us.”
The new school, located on the grounds of Pilgrim Rest Church, gives families in the Eastlake community of Phoenix a new option for students in grades PreK through sixth. With a focus on community integration and innovation, ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest delivers a STEMand art-focused program designed specifically to serve students of color. With the support of Arizona State University, it is creating new pathways to college, making higher education a reality for students of all backgrounds.
Now several weeks into first grade, Barbara is hard at work making her future dreams a reality. She is fully immersed in her music class and exploring new instruments daily, including developing a new love of the piano and percussion instruments. This is thanks, in part, to a partnership between ASU Prep and local musicians who help emerging scholars engage in the world of music and support culture equity by singing songs of the different cultures represented in the school. While Barbara continues to discover the world of music, Lynn is quick to point out the balance between arts and academics that administrators work diligently to achieve. “She has weekly science labs and many hands-on classrooms activities that will help her go to higher heights and deeper depths in her learning and in life,” she says. Learn more about Pilgrim Rest, including taking a virtual tour and learning about upcoming events, at asuprep.asu.edu/ pilgrim-rest-elementary.

Golden Discovery: 9-Year-Old Strikes Real Gold at Cave Creek Museum! Headliners
Photo courtesy of the Cave Creek Museum
CaseWallace struck gold during a visit to the Cave Creek Museum with his fellow fourth graders from Annunciation Catholic School recently. The students were at the museum to learn about Cave Creek's mining history and try their hand at gold
panning, a popular activity at the Arizona Gold Mining Experience hosted by the museum.
While sifting through a mix of sand, pyrite (fool's gold), black sand, magnetite, garnet, quartz, turquoise, obsidian, and shark's tooth in hopes of finding real gold flakes, 9-yearold Case emerged as the lucky panner who found not one, but two gold flakes during the excursion!
Erik Anderson, a museum volunteer who assisted the children, notes that Case had an impressive panning method. Gold, being the heaviest mineral, can often be found in magnetite, a fine black sand. When Case spotted the shiny gold, two dream team instructors verified its authenticity by checking the sample with a magnet—real gold won't stick to a magnet. To Case's delight, it was confirmed as real gold! The museum team then placed the gold in a small tube for Case to take home as a keepsake from his exciting adventure.
“He had a very good technique,” says Erik. Reflecting on his discovery, Case says, "It just didn’t look like fool’s gold to me because it was flat. The volunteer told us that if the gold was flat, it was most likely real. I ran over to him, and he grabbed a magnet to check the gold I found and concluded it was the real thing. I kept panning and found a second gold flake. It was really cool, fun, and I liked the experience a lot."
Case, who had been studying Arizona history before the trip, expressed his gratitude to the museum volunteers, calling them "the best volunteers ever."
The Cave Creek Museum, located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, is dedicated to preserving the prehistory, history, culture, and legacy of the Cave Creek Mining District and the Cave Creek/Carefree foothills area through education, research, and interpretive exhibits. The museum can be reached at 480-488-2764. For more information, visit cavecreekmuseum.org.
Cactus Shadows High Senior Introduces President Biden at Monumental Grand Canyon Ceremony
Ona sunlit day at the historic Red Butte Airfield, Cactus Shadows High School senior Maya Tilousi-Lyttle stood proudly as she introduced President Joe Biden to an eager crowd. The event marked the signing of the proclamation that established the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni - Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument on Aug. 8. Maya, who belongs to both the Havasupai and Hopi tribes, encapsulated the significance of the occasion with a message of unity and reverence for ancestral
lands. "Standing here represents the unity of the tribes to protect our ancestral lands," she reflected. Her words resonated deeply with many who shared a bond with the majestic landscape of the Grand Canyon.
With memories of her childhood trips to Havasu Falls etched in her heart, May expressed a profound connection to the land, "I've grown up swimming at Havasu Falls where I learned a deep respect for our land and water."
The president's signing of the proclamation is a testament to the efforts of indigenous communities, environmentalists, and policymakers. The creation of

Recently, Teraya, who occupies the position of an outside hitter for the U.S. Girls U19 National Volleyball Team, led her squad to victory against a formidable Turkish team, bringing home the gold medal.

Tempe Union High Schools Champion Peer Tutoring Education
AllTempe Union High Schools have now rolled out an empowering initiative that brings students together for academic growth. The Peer to Peer Tutoring Program, available across all campuses, is putting students in the driving seat, offering them the chance to both guide and seek guidance. Every high school under the Tempe Union banner has designated tutoring day(s), specific location(s), and time(s) for students to get the help they need, either before or after school. While these sessions are supervised by faculty, the actual tutoring is provided by their peers—students who have excelled or shown proficiency in various subjects.
While drop-ins are welcome, the program emphasizes making appointments, especially
for students who prefer a particular tutor or need to fix a specific day and time. Arrangements can easily be made online by simply clicking on the ‘Peer Tutoring’ button associated with each school on the website tempeunion.org.
The new program’s focus isn't just academic. It's also about forging connections. It offers students struggling with their coursework a flexible strategy to get direct, timely help in the evenings. It's particularly invaluable for those who might find the thought of approaching a teacher daunting. The more relaxed, peerdriven environment can make it easier for students to open up, ask questions, and get the clarifications they need. Moreover, the benefits extend beyond just
the students seeking help. The initiative underscores the value of independent learning, offering tutors a chance to reinforce their own understanding while helping others.
The Peer Tutoring Program is more than just a study aid—it's an endeavor to foster a community where every student has the resources and support they need to excel. So, whether it's combating homework frustration or getting that extra nudge in understanding a challenging concept, students now have an avenue that promotes both independence and personalized learning.
Students across the district are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity and redefine the way they approach learning.

Toe-Tapping Tunes with the Okee Dokee Brothers
A musical adventure awaits at Tempe Center for the Arts!
By Shay Moser
The Okee Dokee Brothers — Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander — are the Grammy award-winning duo who have crafted their signature Americana folk music sound since releasing their first album, “Can You Canoe?” in 2012. They’re on tour with their sixth album, “Brambletown,” under their belts and will perform songs from all six albums at Tempe Center for the Arts on Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.
But how did these two become a folk pair who write music, play the acoustic guitar and banjo, and perform upbeat rustic folk and bluegrass tunes that all ages enjoy?
Long before they became The Okee Dokee Brothers, Justin and Joe met in preschool, growing up outside Denver, and exploring the outdoors together when they weren’t in elementary and high school.
“We sang John Denver songs around campfires in the Colorado mountains with our families, with each other, and as camp counselors,” says Joe. They hiked and visited farms together with their families, too. As they matured, their outdoor adventures developed into rafting down their neighborhood creek and discovering trails through the Rocky Mountains.
All those experiences and shared memories gave them an appreciation for the outdoors and helped them connect with nature and find inspiration in the environment.
The two started making music together in high school. Justin learned the banjo while Joe switched from the piano to the guitar. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Joni Mitchell inspired their songs for the folk-rock band they formed.
“We put together a family set based on some of our bluegrass songs, and we noticed that the traditional songs got kids moving when we would play the family sets,” says Joe. “That's when we started writing more family versions of the traditional songs.”
The duo’s first four albums were written during outdoor journeys — one on a monthlong canoe trip down the Mississippi River, another horse packing

the Continental Divide, another hiking the Appalachian Trail, and one during a winter dogsledding trip. The albums lightly follow these outdoor expeditions with songs about the beauty of nature (“The Bullfrog Opera”), fishing with friends (“Muddy River”), and wandering through the forest (“Through the Woods”).
“We wanted to unplug from the internet and hustle and bustle to slow our minds down,” Joe explains. “We listened for the voices of nature. There’s always something singing out there. You can hear the river, leaves, and trees, and there's always a song floating around. The question is whether you’re open to hearing it. That’s why we spent so much time out there: to be open and let those messages come through.”
“Through The Woods,” “Saddle Up,” “Winterland,” and “Songs For Singin’” are the albums sandwiched between “Can You Canoe?” and “Brambletown.” All their albums include an illustrated book of lyrics and chords to make singalongs easier.
The duo's songs are catchy and packed with funny and uplifting lyrics. Their family-friendly music is appropriate for kids and appeals to adults of all ages, as they play at school assemblies, libraries, park concerts, and family festivals nationwide.
“We want to encourage kids to go outside and get active and be content with less material things and more adventures,” Joe says. Their
commitment to quality lyrics and music earned them a Grammy Award for “Can You Canoe?” and Grammy nominations for their albums “Through the Woods” and “Saddle Up.”
While Justin and Joe have put monthlong outdoor expeditions for musical inspiration on hold while they raise families in separate states, the two talk daily to work on songs and meet on weekends in cities across the U.S. for performances.
“We harmonize, and our signature sound is switching verses and singing choruses together,” says Joe.
Okee Dokee Brothers fans can also get two books by the duo. “Can You Canoe? And Other Adventure Songs” includes lively illustrations and a sing-along CD highlighting their trips throughout the Appalachian Trail, the Mississippi River, and the Continental Divide. The second book is a story inspired by the folktale “The Fisherman and His Wife” about the things we wish for compared to what we truly need.
“Everything we do, including the show and our albums and our friendship, has to do with engagement,” Joe says. “We want kids and their families to dance or sing along. It's an intergenerational experience. The lyrics are written so everyone can understand them and follow along.”

Brunch Buddies Ronald McDonald House Charities launches new volunteer program.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central and Northern Arizona (RMHCCNAZ) is delighted to announce the launch of Brunch Buddies, a new volunteer initiative. This program is an extension of the successful Dinnertime Heroes program, which provides dinner to guest families from Sunday to Friday at all three Valley Houses. Now, Brunch Buddies will invite volunteers to prepare Saturday morning brunches at the Cambridge, Roanoke, and Dobson Houses.
Volunteers have always been crucial to RMHC’s
efforts. Jen Donnelly, RMHCCNAZ volunteer manager and the program's designer, explains, “Volunteers are an essential part of the work that we do at RMHC, especially for our Dinnertime Heroes and Brunch Buddies programs. By bringing in volunteers from Valley business, spiritual, and community organizations, RMHC can provide a warm, homemade meal for our guest families every single day of the week.” Volunteers are encouraged to prepare their favorite or specialty breakfast dish, whether it be pancakes, egg sandwiches, or even a festive cereal bar, to bring comfort to guest families.
Kerry Shulman, RMHCCNAZ CEO, adds, “Our Dinnertime Heroes program has been incredibly well received by both our volunteers and guest families. Brunch Buddies is a natural progression of both Dinnertime Heroes and our overarching mission to provide guest families with a comfortable place to stay, and social and emotional support. For many, weekend mornings are a time to gather with family for a meal and connection. Brunch Buddies is our way of providing that experience here at RMHC.”
RMHCCNAZ has been providing a “homeaway-from-home” for children and their families
traveling to the Valley for treatment for serious, often life-threatening illnesses and injuries. The organization operates three “Houses” in the Valley: Roanoke House in Phoenix; Cambridge House on the campus of Phoenix Children’s Hospital; and Dobson House in Mesa, located on the campus of Banner Children’s at Desert. These locations accommodate up to 72 families a night, who stay for days, weeks, sometimes months at a time, at no charge, while their children receive care at local medical facilities.
For more information about the Brunch Buddies program or to volunteer, visit rmhccnaz.org/meals.

Barry Goldwater High School Unveils Renovated Giving Closet giving back
Photos courtesy of Deer Valley Unified School District
In an initiative to support families facing financial difficulties, Barry Goldwater High School (BGHS) in north Phoenix has unveiled its freshly renovated Giving Closet. The high school's commitment to assist struggling students and their families has seen significant growth over the years.
The concept of the Giving Closet was originally introduced by Ann Ordway, a current board member. Founded several years ago, its primary purpose has been to assist students of this Title I school, providing resources for those whose families might not have the means. The closet generously offers necessities such as snacks, meals, clothing, school supplies, and even attire for special school events like prom, graduation, and promotion ceremonies.
Recognizing the importance of enhancing the initiative, School Resource Officer (SRO) Valerie Rhodes, newly appointed last year, identified the necessity to expand the project. Collaborating with Toll Brothers and Younger Brothers construction companies, she led the transformation of the Giving Closet into a space mimicking a dignified shopping experience. Their efforts have been supplemented by prominent businesses. Home Depot, Sanderson Ford, and Costco have generously donated funds, aiding in organizational logistics for the closet and catering for workers during the installation.
This endeavor has not been a solitary one. The BGHS leadership and numerous community members have been pivotal in organizing the project and ensuring specific donations. Through their combined efforts, the Deer Valley District and BGHS students are reassured of the community's unwavering care and support.
In celebration of the renovated space, BGHS treated the community to an unveiling of the new space in August. More than just a closet, the revamped Giving Closet serves as a testament to community solidarity. Now, students and their families can access an expanded range of resources, from clothing and formal wear to accessories, hygiene products, and other vital essentials.
Barry Goldwater High School is located at 2820 W. Rose Garden Lane. For more information, visit dvusd.org.

Loving Library Meet the 11-year-old spreading love with libraries.
By Naya Seth
Photos courtesy of Loving Library
Introducing Anaik Sachdev! This 11-year-old Paradise Valley resident started a nonprofit organization called Loving Library, which now has 14 chapters in Arizona, California, Texas, and the United Kingdom.
The idea came to him after a personal experience with COVID in March 2020.
Several of his family members contracted COVID, including his grandmother, who had to be hospitalized. During this time period, they were all isolated. Anaik would FaceTime his grandmother every day and realized how lonely it was for her. So, they decided to pass the time by reading books. After this experience, he wanted to do something to help patients in hospitals. He reached out to the mayor and began the first chapter of Loving Library at Valleywise Health at the age of 9. Currently, they support a variety of organizations including Valleywise Health, Afghanistan Refugee Center, St. Joseph’s NICU, Childhelp,
Anaik Sachdev, the young visionary behind Loving Library, stands proud with fellow ambassadors, each holding the books that are bridging communities and sparking joy. Together, they're turning pages into pathways of hope!
and more. One of Anaik’s favorite memories from Loving Library was when he dropped off books at Valleywise Health. A nurse had come out and told him how happy the patients were to be receiving books from a 9-year-old, which made him feel so good, and he knew that he wanted to continue Loving Library. Another one of his most memorable experiences was at Circle the City, a healthcare center for the homeless. As Anaik was dropping off books, a patient came out to him and told Anaik about himself and his love for reading.
There are many people who have been supporting Anaik and Loving Library. Some of the most notable are actually kids. These helpers are called ambassadors, and they each support an individual organization within Loving Library. One of their primary jobs is preparing and delivering books.
Donations that are sent to the ambassadors get stamped on the corner of the first blank page, and once 100 to 500 books have been donated, the ambassadors take the books to the organization they represent. They also help lead the raffles at fundraising events, which is one of
12-year-old Sanaiya Badyal’s favorite activities. She’s currently an ambassador for Childhelp, an organization that provides treatment, intervention, and investigative services for abused or neglected children.
The Afghanistan Refugee Center is an additional organization that is supported by 9-year-old Jovin Sachdev, Anaik’s brother. He has a special connection to this center, as he became friends with a refugee at his school but was unable to fully connect with him due to a language barrier. Jovin decided to start another chapter of Loving Library at the Afghanistan Refugee Center to help his friend and his family.
Another ambassador who has been working with Loving Library since the start is Avaani Lallian, who is 12 years old. She supports Childhelp as well, and she loves donating the books because it gives her a really good feeling, knowing that kids are going to be happy seeing the books.
Loving Library hosts a couple different fundraising events throughout the year. The next event, called Light Up The Library, is a glow party for people of all ages! It is on Saturday Sept. 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at Creighton University Health Sciences Campus, located at 3100 N. Central Ave., in Phoenix. The money raised from the admission fees and raffles will support their existing chapters and will help open five new ones.
For more information about this event, how to donate, and Loving Library in general, go to thelovinglibrary.org.
Naya Seth, 13 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

MONSTER JAM DRIVER
Armando Castro gets behind the wheel for rousing motor action.
Armando Castro
Profession: Monster Jam Driver
Age: 26
What do you do for a living?
I am a competitor for Monster Jam. What type of training do you need to do your job?
We go to Monster Jam University to learn how to operate one of these 12,000 pound Monster Jam trucks. We also go through vigorous training including strength training.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite thing about my job is the travel. I have always wanted to get into a profession that lets me do what I love but also travel and see the world. Another is getting to meet all of the Monster Jam fans around the world and inspire the next generation of drivers.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
It’s going to sound cliché, but I actually wished and grew up wanting to be a Monster Jam driver. I knew what I wanted to do when I saw Monster Jam for the very first time at the age of 6. What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?
Never give up! I know it's often said, but really go and chase that dream because you’re the
only one that can make your dream come true. Work hard, never take no for an answer, let that fuel your fire. I didn’t have a motorsports background, and I made it. If you’re passionate for it, you’ll make it happen no matter the odds against you.
One fun fact NOT about your job?
One cool fact about me is that I love to collect classic cars. I am very passionate about classic cars especially Dodge/Plymouth. I’m a Mopar head myself but really love any classic car. I love the artwork of classic cars, the thought behind them, and the functions of some of them. They really don’t make them like they used to.

Brain Play Sari on SCIENCE TINTED TOPS!
By Sari Custer
This is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.
SUPPLIES
• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper
• 2 rubber bands
• 1 pencil
• 1 pair of scissors
• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)
CHALLENGE
• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate
• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle
• Cut the circle out from the paper plate
• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle
• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color
• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle
• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands
• Spin the top
did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?
Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?
ASK
YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS
What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How

SYNOPSIS: Willow Chance is a 12-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions. She finds it comforting to count by sevens. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn’t kept her from leading a quietly happy life. . . until now.
Suddenly Willow’s world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. The triumph of this book is that it is not a tragedy. This extraordinarily odd, but extraordinarily endearing, girl manages to push through her grief. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read.
MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK IS: “It's possible that all labels are curses. Unless they are on cleaning products.”
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS: How it sheds light on experiencing grief at a young age because it isn’t a topic often discussed in middle-grade books. I feel that it is a very necessary story and one that many will see themselves represented in.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK IS: Willow Chance! She is a wonderful role model who embraces her differences instead of trying to hide them. Willow’s journey will be inspiring for readers from every walk of life.
