BEAT THE HEAT Top picks for family fun this summer! Headliners

“Epic Kids” is all set for a summer break, but don't worry—we'll be back with our August issue, just in time for the new school year! While we're away, Phoenix-area kids have plenty of exciting activities to dive into this summer. From movie marathons to splashy adventures, there's something for everyone under the sun!

SUMMER MOVIE FUN WITH HARKINS THEATRES

Kick off your summer with a movie marathon at Harkins Theatres. Celebrating nearly 50 years of family-friendly films, Harkins brings back the best flicks to the big screen to keep kids entertained and cool. This year's lineup includes favorites like "Trolls: Band Together" and "Sonic the Hedgehog." For just $8, kids can enjoy a movie a week for eight weeks or grab tickets at the box office for $2 each. Season passes are available at any participating theatre with movies showing from June 3 to July 26. Remember, all show times start at 9:45 am with open seating— arrive early to snag a good spot! For more

information, visit harkins.com/events-andseries/summer-movie-fun.

SPLASH INTO SUMMER AT VALLEY SPLASH PADS

Beat the heat at one of the Valley’s many free splash pads. A popular spot is Desert Ridge Marketplace’s newly remodeled splash pad, 21001 N. Tatum Blvd., in Phoenix. Splash pads provide a perfect setting for kids to enjoy the outdoors while staying cool. They're equipped with fountains and sprays that promise a refreshing escape from the summer heat. A quick Google search will provide the one closest to you.

DIVE INTO AQUATIC CENTERS & WATERPARKS

For families without a pool, city-run aquatic centers provide an affordable splash of fun. Facilities like the Anthem Community Center feature a lap pool, diving well, and extensive splash pad water parks, with entry fees typically around $3 per person. For a different

kind of water adventure, consider heading to local waterparks like Golfland Sunsplash or Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. These parks offer a variety of thrilling rides and wave pools, perfect for beating the summer heat, though they come with a higher price tag. Ensure a splash-tastic day by checking out your city's aquatic center for budget-friendly fun or splurge a little at exciting waterparks for high-energy entertainment. Visit their respective websites for detailed information on attractions, pricing, and more.

BEYOND MOVIES AND POOLS

Alongside movie marathons and splashy adventures, families can enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor pastimes in the area. For those looking to stay cool, indoor ice skating at the Ice Den in Scottsdale offers chill vibes with open skate sessions, complete with supports for the little ones. Bowling alleys and roller skating rinks provide a perfect blend of fun and physical activity, while axe throwing adds a bit of edge for older kids and adults seeking a thrilling challenge.

Scottsdale also offers Top Golf, Octane Raceway, Mavericks, iFly, and the interactive world of Bam Kazam, where arcade games come to life. Here, you're the star player navigating real-life challenges—from 'the floor is lava' games to escape rooms. Conveniently located near each other at The Pavilions at Talking Stick, these spots are sure to keep kids entertained.

Don't forget your local library, a treasure trove of free summer activities including classes, LEGO clubs, and the much-loved summer reading program. Plus, take advantage of Culture Passes for complimentary access to local museums.

So, while “Epic Kids” takes a short break, Phoenix doesn't slow down. Get ready to make this summer one of the best yet with movies, splashes, skates, adventures, and reads. Enjoy your summer and see you in August!

Hoop Dreams and Donuts

A peek inside the life of Phoenix Mercury player Sophie Cunningham. Headliners

courtesy of Nicholas Bubeck

It’s always cool to talk to famous athletes.

My mom recently interviewed Sophie Cunningham of the Phoenix Mercury, and my brother and I listened in on her Zoom call. Here’s what we learned about this basketball player.

First, she’s known as 'Spicy Sophie.' This means she’s fierce on the court and not afraid to play hard.

Her favorite meal includes donuts and baby back ribs.

Next, she's 6 feet 1 inch tall — that's really tall.

She played basketball in college at Mizzou in Columbia, Missouri, where she's from. Her grandpa, dad, mom, and sister all played sports there too.

She’s living her dream. According to Sophie, “I always wanted to be a pro athlete and inspire the next generation.”

During the Mercury off-season, she works as a commentator at Suns games! You can see this photo of my brother watching her on TV reporting at a game.

During the off-season, Sophie is a commentator at Suns games.

In addition to basketball, she enjoys horseback riding, hiking, and boating. She also likes listening to country music. Her bucket list includes going on an African safari, attending a symphony, and swimming with sharks.

Since going pro, the most valuable thing she's learned is to show up, be herself, smile, and be grateful.

And finally, my brother asked Sophie if playing pro basketball is like playing on the playground at recess. She answered:

“I think there’s a bit more on the line than having fun at recess, but when we take the pressure off and act like we're kids again, that's when we play our best basketball.”

Arizona Students Invited to Envision Their Future Careers in Statewide Photo Contest

Arizona students are getting a creative opportunity to visualize and share their career aspirations with the chance to win funds towards their education savings. The Arizona Treasurer's Office announced the return of this imaginative competition, inviting students to capture their dream jobs in a photo—be it a selfie, a group shot, or a creatively staged scene.

The contest, open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade across Arizona's 15 counties—including those in district, charter, private, tribal schools, and homeschools—aims to inspire young minds to think about their future careers and the educational paths to get there. Participants are en-

couraged to express their vision of their dream job, either by starring in the photo or by working behind the camera.

A total of 10 winners will be selected to each receive $529 towards an AZ529 Education Savings Plan account. This contribution is to help students save for post-secondary education, whether it be college, community college, vocational training, or trade school.

“We are excited to bring back this student photo contest for a second time to encourage families across the state to engage in these important conversations about education and savings throughout the summer,” says Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “It's never too early and

it's certainly never too late for families to start planning for their child's future, especially when it comes to saving for their education."

The AZ529 plan offers a tax-free way to save for higher education, with Arizona residents eligible for a state tax deduction on contributions—up to $2,000 or $4,000 per beneficiary, depending on their filing status. Additionally, contributions can grow tax-free and remain so when used for qualified educational expenses.

Starting this year, beneficiaries who do not use all their funds for education can roll over the remainder into a Roth IRA, providing a head start on retirement savings.

Entries for the contest must be submitted by Sunday, June 9, at 11:59 p.m. Parents or guardians of the winners will need to set up or have an existing AZ529 account to receive the prize. For more information, visit az529. gov/2024photocontest.

A Legacy of Leadership

Shadow Mountain High School students accepted into elite military academies.

Shadow Mountain High School (SMHS) is celebrating the achievements of two exceptional students. Ava Vancil and Jasy Justus, both seniors at SMHS, have been accepted into two of the nation’s most prestigious military institutions. Vancil will join the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, while Justus is set to enter the United States Military Academy at West Point. Their acceptances mark a significant milestone for the Paradise Valley Unified School District’s (PVSchools) commitment to excellence and leadership development through its JROTC programs.

Inspiration and Aspiration

For Vancil, inspiration struck in an unlikely place: a movie theater, during a showing of “Top Gun Maverick.” The film not only introduced her to the thrills of aerial combat but also sparked an unexpected ambition to pursue a military career—specifically as a fighter pilot. The idea didn’t seize her immediately. “The funny thing was, I didn’t walk out of the theater dreaming about being a fighter pilot; it took a couple of weeks,” Vancil reflects.

“I guess I just connected the dots and couldn’t stop thinking about being a fighter pilot. I tried to convince myself it was a crazy idea and that there was no chance,” she admits. However, the pull of destiny was too strong to ignore.

“That lasted for about a week, then I realized, ‘I’m gonna do this! I’m gonna take the plunge.’” Fueled by this determination, Vancil immersed herself in preparation. “The next day, I was running and watching videos on the Naval Academy because that’s where I could become the best fighter pilot,” she says. This aspiration ultimately led her to seek admission at the Naval Academy, a storied institution renowned for developing the nation’s top-tier military leaders.

Justus’s motivation is deeply rooted in a philosophy that resonates on the wrestling mat and beyond: “Don’t talk about it, be about it.”

This mantra, imparted by one of her wrestling coaches, has become a cornerstone of her worldview. “This ideology has stuck with me

12 | MAY 2024 | EPIC KIDS EPIC KIDS AZ.COM

past the 5 p.m. practices and has become ingrained in the very way I think,” Justus explains. “Too many people sit around and wait for somebody else to take care of pressing problems in the world, but who’s that somebody going to be if everyone else is just waiting for a leader?”

She argues that true freedom requires active defense and sacrifice, citing the costs paid by previous generations through “blood, sweat, tears, time, and lives.” In her view, West Point embodies this ethos of active engagement and leadership. “West Point not only provides the opportunity to become a leader but guarantees that all its graduates are leaders,” she says.

Her acceptance into the United States Military Academy was the culmination of years of dedication and a dream held since the first day of high school. “It’s imaginable how much relief I felt when I received my acceptance after months of anticipation,” she recalls. “I’m incredibly grateful to be offered such an amazing opportunity and intend to make the most of it.”

Unique Opportunities at SMHS

Both students have been integral members of the SMHS Space Force JROTC, one of only 10 such programs in the entire country. The program’s distinctive offerings, including an aviation program that can precede a driver’s license with a pilot’s license, have been crucial in their development. This program underscores PVSchools’ innovative approach to education, blending traditional learning with specialized, career-oriented training.

Superintendent of PVSchools Dr. Troy Bales praises the district’s initiatives. “Programs like the Space Force JROTC are instrumental in preparing students like Vancil and Justus not only for college but for impactful careers beyond academia,” he says. “Their stories exemplify the district’s Portrait of a Graduate mission, which aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, resilience, and ethical leadership among students.”

A Model of Resilience and Leadership

Vancil’s journey has not been without challenges. Initially unable to run a halfmile, she recalls, “I broke down in tears and nearly quit, but learned to push past my limits—strength I’ll carry into the academy.” Her academic path was also

challenging, particularly with multiple attempts at the SAT. “I’m no math whiz, and the SAT seemed overwhelming,” she admits. Despite the setbacks, Vancil used every resource from practice tests to tutoring, persistently improving her scores, reflecting the resilience PVSchools strives to instill in its students.

Similarly, Justus has balanced a demanding schedule of athletics, rigorous academics, and leadership roles within the JROTC, finding each to be a rewarding endeavor that prepared her for future challenges. “When the end is far from sight, it can be hard to persevere and continue with the same tenacity I started with, but I remind myself of the bigger picture and focus on small increments of progress,” says Justus.

Mentorship and Community Impact

Both Vancil and Justus also highlight the significant role mentorship played in their pre-academy preparation. They credited their JROTC instructors and school mentors with providing not only guidance but also opportunities to explore and realize their potential. This supportive environment is a cornerstone of the district’s approach to education, aiming to produce well-rounded individuals who are prepared to lead ethically and effectively.

As these two young women prepare to transition from high school students to military cadets, their achievements serve as inspiration for their peers and future students alike. PVSchools continues to celebrate and support their journey, confident in the knowledge that Vancil and Justus are not just prepared to meet the challenges of their respective academies but to excel and lead in every endeavor they undertake.

Their admissions into prestigious academies are not just personal victories but also showcase their potential as future leaders in the U.S. military. Vancil advises peers to “push through adversity and never give up,” reflecting her journey of overcoming physical and academic challenges. Justus encourages taking proactive steps toward leadership: “Be about it. Don’t wait for change; be the change.” Together, they set a powerful example for fellow students, proving that with resilience and proactive preparation, achieving big dreams is possible.

BRIGHT SMILES, BRIGHTER FUTURES Career Day

Meet Maria Valenzuela, a global advocate for health and dental care education.

Maria Valenzuela

Profession: Chief Program Officer

Company: Advance Community, a nonprofit organization that provides disease prevention, oral health, and nutrition education to underresourced communities in Arizona and around the world.

Age: 50

What do you do for a living?

I provide support to under-resourced communities. Growing up, it was difficult to identify with the majority of people because I didn’t look like them and wasn’t fluent in their language. I use my experiences to provide services to communities. We meet members where they are. We’ve reached over 60,000 Hispanic families and I oversee all programs in Arizona and across six other countries: Bolivia, Ecuador,

Mozambique, Nicaragua, Peru, and Mexico. I make sure our actions align with our vision of a world where every person is thriving.

What type of training do you need to do for your job?

It is important to have a college degree in public health, social services, or family studies. You should also consider receiving a community health worker certificate. And, of course, have a passion for helping others.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Every day I am an advocate for our most vulnerable communities, making sure they have access to information and resources that are shared in a culturally and linguistically appropriate way.

But one of my favorite parts is celebrating Mother’s Day. This is a time when we connect with moms in

the community and celebrate their hard work and accomplishments. We serve traditional Mexican food such as Sonoran enchiladas, carne asada, and homemade tortillas and beans. There’s plenty of dancing, laughing, and music to enjoy!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be an attorney who advocates for children when I was growing up. Even though I’m not in a lawyer’s office, I’m still an advocate for others.

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career? Have tenacity. Stay humble. Be honest, and be empathetic toward others. Never underestimate the value in giving back to others.

One fun fact NOT about your job?

I enjoy road trips and traveling abroad. I’ll go anywhere that’s cooler than Arizona!

Create a wearable nature bracelet. Brain Play

WRAP, WANDER, WOW

Who needs a jewelry store when Mother Nature offers a treasure trove of dazzling gems? This simple yet fascinating activity is all about decking out your wrists with the vibrant colors and interesting textures that you can only find outdoors. It’s a DIY project that brings art, nature, and discovery together in the form of a wearable piece of art!

WHAT YOU NEED

• Clear packing tape (1/2- or 1-inch wide)

• A variety of natural treasures (flowers, leaves, etc.)

GETTING CRAFTY

1. Take a length of tape and wrap it around the wrist with the sticky side facing out, to form a sticky canvas.

2. Embark on a nature walk and scout

for small, colorful objects: flowers, leaves, seeds, the more diverse, the better!

3. Decorate your tape bracelet by pressing your collected items onto the sticky surface. As you stick each item to the bracelet, observe and discuss what you see, touch, and smell.

THE LEARNING JOURNEY

As your children fill their tape with natural elements, they’ll naturally start to sort, categorize, and admire the diversity in nature. They might even begin asking questions about the flora and fauna that surround them, turning a simple craft into an impromptu biology lesson.

WHY IT’S AWESOME

This activity is a hit for several reasons:

• It’s budget-friendly – all you need is the great outdoors and a strip of tape!

• It’s inclusive and adaptable, making it a perfect fit for children and adults of any age.

• You can do it year-round, with each season bringing its own unique materials to the table.

• It’s sneaky learning – as kids engage in this sensory-rich activity, they’re exploring science, art, math, and more without even realizing it. So, next time you head out for a stroll in the park or a hike in the woods, or even your own backyard, grab that packing tape and add an extra layer of fun and learning to your journey with nature bracelets.

Brain Play Middle School: A Time of Change

It’s no secret that middle school can be difficult. It is a time of huge changes and trying to figure out who you are and how you fit in. These difficulties can be compounded when trying to navigate two different worlds.

“Red, White, and Whole” by Rajani LaRocca tells the story of 13-year-old Reha, an only child of Indian immigrants, growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1980s.

Told in first-person free verse with compassion and sensitivity, this coming of age historical fiction title poignantly tackles the difficult themes of immigration, acculturation, and grief. If you are looking for something similar, here are a couple of my favorites!

“OTHER WORDS FOR HOME” by Jasmine Warga

Although written about a different situation, this story resonates with the same energy as “Red, White, and Whole.” Beginning in Syria and told around the Arab Spring, the relatable protagonist, Jude, tells her own story of immigration and grief. Using a first-person free verse style, the author relates experiences of war and displacement. After moving to America, Jude must confront the reality of being an Arab Muslim living in the United States.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT:

This realistic fiction book uses free verse to explore the immigrant experience through thoughtful characters.

“INSIDE OUT & BACK AGAIN”

The war in Vietnam is the backdrop of this story. Expressed in free verse, it tells the story of 10-year-old Ha. In 1975, the fall of Saigon sent waves of refugees fleeing Vietnam. With the help of a family friend and an American sponsor, Ha and her family eventually reach the United States and settle in Alabama. Leaving behind her friends, home, and culture, Ha must navigate a new world, one where she thinks the food has no flavor and where she believes that “Whoever invented English / should be bitten / by a snake.”

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT:

This story is a first-person narrative told in free verse. It explores the immigrant experience in an amusing, hopeful, and moving way.

Christy is a children’s librarian who loves history and enjoys learning about different cultures. She especially enjoys middlegrade historical fiction books because they cover difficult topics in an accessible, easyto-read way. When she is not at work, she enjoys watching documentaries, exploring cemeteries, and spending time with her family.

AVERY’S PICK “MAGNUS CHASE AND THE SWORD OF SUMMER”

GENRE: Young Adult Fantasy

AGES: 11+

RATING: AAAAA

SYNOPSIS: Magnus Chase has seen his share of trouble. Ever since that terrible night two years ago when his mother told him to run, he has lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, staying one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, Magnus learns that someone else is trying to track him down—his uncle Randolph, a man his mother had always warned him about. When Magnus tries to outmaneuver his uncle, he falls right into his clutches. Randolph starts rambling about Norse history and Magnus' birthright: a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

The more Randolph talks, the more puzzle pieces fall into place. Stories about the gods of Asgard, wolves, and doomsday bubble up from Magnus' memory. But he doesn't have time to consider it all before a fire giant attacks the city, forcing him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents...sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die.

EMILIA’S EPIC EATS

Cala Scottsdale. A brunch bash with besties at

Happy Month of May to all my favorite Epic Kids! It’s Emilia again, and this month I'm taking you to one of the most incredible brunch places around!

When I think of brunch, I think of girl time! So, my besties and I headed to Cala Scottsdale for a long overdue visit. Unknowingly, this restaurant also had a snake plant, which you may know by now, are my favorite. It's the closest my mom will let me come to owning a snake.

Walking in, there were the most beautiful light fixtures and wall decor that reminded me of dreamcatchers. They covered the wall and were warm and inviting. Even though we were a few minutes early for our reservation, we were seated right

away and ordered Shirley Temples. Our waitress was the sweetest and even brought me extra cherries!

When it comes to breakfast, I like pretty traditional items. So, I ordered the Farmstead Breakfast off of the adult menu. There was a kids’ menu, but I have a deep love for Sunny Side Up eggs! These organic gems were perfectly poppable and paired well with my sourdough toast. The butter was melted just right, and it made for ideal dipping! There were also two sausage links that were cooked to perfection with a bit of spice on them. It also came with some potatoes, which I shared with my mom and friends since potatoes aren't my jam. However, the jam was incredible on my toast!

I did also eat a generous portion of my mom's buttermilk pancakes; because.... pancakes. They came with whipped honey butter and pure maple syrup. Need I say

more? I've never met a pancake I didn't like, but these were extra delicious!

Overall, I had a 10/10 time at Cala with my besties! Between the staff, the atmosphere, my favorite people, and amazing food, I couldn't have been happier. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out on your summer break, or it is a perfect spot for special occassions!

Cala is located at 7501 E. Camelback Rd., in Scottsdale. For more information, visit calascottsdale.com.

Emilia Hernandez is 9 years old and eats pretty "non-kid-like" for her age. She loves things like shrimp and snails and is pretty adventurous with food.
