Coast to Coast with Nicholas

Get the details on cool Loews hotels in New York City and San Diego Headliners

Photos courtesy of the Bubeck family

If your family is gearing up for a summer vacation, here are two cool spots to visit from coast to coast: a neat spot in New York city and a beachy getaway in San Diego.

LOEWS IN NYC

Located on Park Avenue, Loews Regency New York sits in Manhattan's Upper East Side. It's perfectly placed, making it easy to walk to nearby attractions like Central Park.

Speaking of Central Park, I really enjoyed dining at the historic Tavern on the Green—it's been around since 1934! My brothers and I had the best grilled cheese ever, and then we took a pedicab tour around the park. We got the ultimate view of the Statue of Liberty aboard a private boat, thanks to New York Harbor

Tours. We sailed down the Hudson River, catching the coolest views of Lady Liberty and Ellis Island.

The most classic way to see the NYC skyline is by visiting the Empire State Building. It was so fun going on a tour up the multiple elevators, seeing King Kong, and checking out the tower's Hollywood history—so many movies were filmed there! At the top, we were wowed by the views!

LOEWS IN SAN DIEGO

Loews Coronado Bay Resort is just a few minutes from downtown Coronado and is a neat spot to stay directly on the Bay. The Waterfront Villas are fantastic... my brothers and I had plenty of space, and we got to eat breakfast on a beautiful balcony.

The hotel has Crown Landing, a great restaurant, and offers a free shuttle to

Coronado Village. Plus, there's a fun golf cart service that takes you across the street to the beach!

My favorite part was renting a speedboat from Action Sports Rentals, right at Loews. We got to zoom across the bay and even took a spin under the Coronado Bridge!

Loews also has pickleball courts, yard games, and three pools.

Wrapping up our epic journey from the cool city vibes of NYC to the chill beach life in San Diego, it’s been a blast of adventures, laughs, and a ton of fun family moments. I can’t wait to tell you all about where we’re heading next! In the meantime, check out these properties at loewshotels.com.

Oliver's Odyssey: From stress to success through leadership

and learning

Oliver's journey began in his middle school years, where the relentless workload of his advanced placement school left him stressed and disheartened. Concerned about his well-being and development, his mom sought alternatives that would reignite his passion for learning and everyday life.

LOGIC, LEADERSHIP, & LIFE SKILLS

7 ONE WEEK SESSIONS | MONDAY-THURSDAY 60 STUDENTS PER SESSION

Happiness is the goal at this one-of-a-kind youth summer camp! Hosted at Arizona State University, the Logic, Leadership, and Life Skills summer program is the only place where teens can complete licensed professional development training. We’ve taken a college-level curriculum and turned it into a fun and interactive 4-day course. Students will set new goals, learn leadership skills, and get individualized attention from our certified teen life coaches. Overnight options are available!

Through research and exploration, she discovered the Leadership Society of Arizona (LSA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping teenagers with vital life skills. After attending an LSA Leadership Getaway, Oliver found a supportive community and practical guidance from coaches who understood his struggles.

Empowered to take control of his education and personal growth, Oliver transitioned to LeadAZ Private School, a school managed by LSA coaches. With personalized coaching, he flourished in ways previously thought impossible. His enthusiasm for

school was reignited, and stress became a thing of the past.

Now, Oliver thrives in his newfound freedom, exploring his interests and nurturing friendships. He leads by example, spearheading initiatives like daily school clean-ups, mentoring fellow students, and leading the school's Dungeons & Dragons club. Through his new activities, Oliver discovered a passion for storytelling, even lending his talents to editing and writing a newly published young adult novel, "The Fall of Lobos."

With newfound confidence and purpose, Oliver embarked on his journey towards achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, dedicating himself to projects that uplift his community.

Supported by his coach and peers, Oliver no longer dreads school or homework. Instead, he embraces each day with enthusiasm, knowing he has the backing of his "village" to guide him.

Oliver has transformed himself from a student on the brink of burnout to a shining example of resilience and passion. His journey serves as inspiration to others, reminding us that with the right support and determination, we can overcome any obstacle and shine brightly in our pursuits.

Sadie's Story of Healing and Hope at The Godspeed Project Headliners

Sadie formed deep, healing connections with horses after the death of her brother.

Photos courtesy of The Godspeed Project

InCave Creek, a unique sanctuary exists where grief meets grace, and healing comes on four hooves. The Godspeed Project, a nonprofit organization, has been making waves in the community for its innovative approach to helping people navigate the challenging waters of grief through the gentle presence of horses.

It all began with a young girl named Sadie, who at just 7 years old, faced the unimaginable loss of her older brother, Chase. The impact of his sudden departure in January 2021 left Sadie and her family navigating a sea of sorrow. Despite seeking traditional therapy, it was Sadie's encounter with a horse that marked the turning point in her journey through grief.

Sadie's mother, Megan MacIntosh, witnessed a transformation in her daughter after she began interacting with horses. It wasn't long before Sadie was not only riding but also forming deep, healing connections with these animals. Megan saw an opportunity to extend this healing experience to others in the community suffering from similar losses. Thus, The Godspeed Project was born, with Sadie's resilience and newfound hope serving as the impetus.

The organization offers a non-clinical, equine-assisted grief support program led by Megan herself, a certified Grief Educator, certified trauma-informed yoga instructor,

certified Equine Assisted Learning facilitator, certified somatic healing practitioner, and fellow griever. Sessions are tailor-made, allowing children and families to interact with horses in a way that feels less like therapy and more like a journey towards healing. These horses, all rescued from unfortunate circumstances, now help individuals find peace and solace as they work through their grief.

Sadie, now 10, and a fifth grader at Pinnacle Peak Preparatory in Scottsdale, is an example of the profound impact of The Godspeed Project. No longer held back by the weight of her grief, Sadie's story is one of courage and the transformative power of connection—with horses and with one's own emotions.

The Godspeed Project has rapidly grown, reaching many through social media and word of mouth.

It offers hope to those struggling with loss, offering free sessions for children and families grappling with the death of a parent, sibling, or caregiver. Others are invited to participate on a donation basis. For anyone touched by loss, The Godspeed Project offers not just support, but a path forward, guided by the gentle hooves of horses and the unwavering spirit of a little girl named Sadie.

BILTMORE PREPARATORY ACADEMY STUDENTS FOSTER GLOBAL CONNECTIONS THROUGH SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM

Biltmore Preparatory Academy (BPA) is home to an internationally recognized Dual Language Spanish Immersion program. At BPA, they believe biliteracy creates opportunities for students to become compassionate, inclusive, global citizens who are equipped to be successful and competitive in today's global markets. Students are empowered to become biliterate in Spanish and English, as well as have the opportunity to earn high school World Language credit, the Biliteracy Award of Distinction, and participate in exchange programs in Spanish-speaking countries.

A highlight of the exchange initiative is the annual excursion to Mexico, where this year, 20 students and their parents, alongside school administrators, traveled to Hermosillo, Sonora. They engaged with peers and families from Colegio Regis La Salle school, fostering deep cross-cultural connections.

Four fourth-grade students — Norah Uhles, Sebástian Gonzalez, Bella De Mar, and Mason Fulghum — shared their enriching experiences. Each has been part of the Spanish Dual Language program since kindergarten, with some attending the bilingual preschool, Little Big Minds, even earlier.

Mason Fulghum, Sebástian Gonzalez, Bella De Mar, and Norah Uhles.

Upon arriving in Mexico, the BPA group was warmly welcomed by their host families, which was followed by a dinner. The itinerary included a school tour led by their Mexican counterparts, a fun visit to a jump house, and various cultural and recreational activities.

“The welcoming party was my favorite part. Instead of cake, they eat coyotas, which reminds me of an Uncrustable. I really liked it. Later, my partner gave me a tour of his school and showed me where they play basketball. I saw the pool; and the gym was really cool. I've never seen a school that big,” says Sebástian.

“The partner school is bilingual and speaks both English and Spanish. The models for how we learn languages are different. We got to visit the biggest school in Mexico,” explains Bella.

Students and families were also treated to a day at the beach in Kino Bay and also spent a full day participating in a variety of activities around Hermosillo, which was led by their host families.

“My favorite part was going to the food trucks at night and seeing the authentic stores. My favorite food was tacos and corn ‘elote.’ I got to try rolled tacos and they were pretty good and spicy. My family and I love spicy food,” says Norah.

“Visiting the beach was my favorite experience. We collected shells and got to swim in the ocean. I enjoyed spending time with my partner and their family,” says Mason.

On the last day, students went back to school at Colegio Regis for a morning assembly and a flag ceremony in their honor. There were tearful goodbyes before students boarded the bus to return home to Phoenix.

“My family and I want to come back soon to visit my partner and his family again. I loved getting to know my partner as a friend and I really enjoyed the food. We keep in touch by phone, and I can’t wait to visit again,” says Sebástian.

Reflecting on the importance of bilingualism, the students unanimously praised the ability to communicate across cultures. Their experiences in Mexico not only solidified their language skills but also created lasting friendships and a commitment to continue their Spanish education into higher education and their future careers.

This program exemplifies BPA's dedication to creating a world where communication bridges gaps, friendships transcend borders, and education opens doors to endless possibilities.

EMPOWERING ARIZONA'S YOUTH Career Day

Jennie Clausen's journey from backyard teacher to JA Inspire program pioneer.

Jennie Clausen, Ph.D.

Profession: Program Director – JA Inspire

Company: Junior Achievement of Arizona (JA Arizona)

Age: 42

What do you do for a living?

I am the program director for the amazing Junior Achievement Inspire Program. We focus on workplace readiness and financial literacy education for students grades five through 12 through our online career exploration platform. With JA Inspire, students can explore careers in 16 different career clusters and investigate those careers across 100-plus local businesses. We also have an auditorium that

houses almost 100 webinarstyle videos focused on specific jobs and skills. This is all rounded out with our interactive studio, which reinforces soft skills like interviewing strategies and communication tips and tricks. The studio also houses a scholarship repository, internship resources, volunteer opportunities, and current job postings.

What type of training do you need to do your job? There should be some combination of education and sales and marketing. I put on my educator hat in order to understand the infrastructure of the system in Arizona so we can best reach the students who need us most. I put on my sales hat when I need to market JA Inspire within that structure. JA Inspire is an easy lift for teachers and the right thing

for students regardless of geographic location, so it's a really fun program to get to market. It’s also free to students, and that helps make it extremely easy to talk about.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I have two favorite things: The JA family and the impact we are making. I didn’t know that this level of camaraderie or such a deep sense of commitment to students existed anywhere in the world. At JA, every single person on our team works to help Arizona kids succeed in work and life. It’s a passion that can’t be taught, and we are so fortunate that every team member keeps students at the forefront of everything they do.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I think I always knew I would be a teacher! My mom and dad were both teachers all the way through to retirement. That translated into a deep love of learning from a fairly young age for me. I have a picture from when I was 4 years old, where I spread out a blanket in the backyard, called all the neighborhood girls to come over, and then proceeded to 'read' to them (or mimic reading, which is an important early literacy skill) just like a teacher would. To me, that photo is priceless because it's evidence that, even as a

little girl, I had a passion in my heart for teaching and serving students. It's all I have ever wanted to be!

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?

Don’t rule out nonprofit work as an arm of education!

There are so many incredible organizations in Arizona that focus on job readiness from a K-12 approach, and we are fortunate to have strategic partnerships with most of them. I often reference my transfer out of the classroom and into nonprofit as a pivot, but it was more like a fork in the education-related pathways I could take. To the left, I could have continued teaching. To the right, I could try something new. Fastforward two years and I am so fortunate to have stayed to the right.

One fun fact NOT about your job?

I have three boys ages 10, 8, and 6, and their middle names are Danger, Crash, and Kaboom. For real! It’s on their birth certificates.

Brain Play

BEAN IN A JAR

Roll up your sleeves and get ready for a bean-credible journey from seed to plant, all within the cozy confines of a simple jar! Yes, you heard it right, you can grow your very own bean plant without a garden – let's see how it's done!

WHAT’S THE SCOOP ON SPROUTS?

Sprouting a bean is like magic – it's called germination! For a seed to wake up and grow, it needs just a few things: water, air, and the right temperature. That's it! Every seed has a tiny plant waiting inside, and you can help it out! Here’s how:

WHAT YOU NEED

• A bean seed

• A clear jar

• Paper towels or cotton balls

• Water

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wet your paper towel or napkin until it’s damp, not dripping, and fit it snugly into your jar.

2. Swish a little water around the inside of the jar.

3. Place your bean seed in the jar so it’s resting against the paper towel or cotton balls. It needs a little hug, not a squeeze!

4. Every couple of days, give your bean a mist of water.

In a few days, your bean seed should start to sprout, a process called germination. Your bean doesn't even need sunlight to start growing – that part comes later when it’s ready to leave the jar and get planted in the soil.

Curious about how light affects your bean plant's growth? Place one jar on a sunny windowsill and another in a dark cupboard. Make sure both beans get the same amount of water and warmth. After a week, take a peek – the bean in the sun will probably be wearing a little green hat of leaves, while the one in the dark might have a pale and spindly look. The sunlight helps the plant make its food, which gives it that lovely green color. But even without light, the bean still grows with the energy stored in its seed. How cool is that?

Once it starts growing leaves, that's when it craves sunshine to turn into a big, strong plant. So, when your little bean looks like it’s ready for more room, it’s time to move it into a pot with soil.

DJ, an average kid in a family of overachievers, meets Hilo who has fallen to Earth like a meteor. Hilo knows nothing of life on Earth but learns quickly by hanging out with DJ. When a shower of robotic creatures crashes to Earth, it is up to Hilo to save humanity and the world.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT:

You’ll love using voices for all the villains and onomatopoeia; and how the action moves at a very fast pace. I was out of breath reading the first chapter – AAAAAAH!

Janelle Yoder’s favorite part of being a librarian is helping kids and their adults discover new things to read. She also enjoys leading library arts and crafts programs for kids because she gets to play around with paint, clay, and other creative materials. Janelle moved to Arizona over 25 years ago because she wanted access to hiking and mountain biking trails year round. She gets excited about seeing wild critters while out and about. She has two teenagers and two cats, all of whom would rather curl up at home while she hits the trails.

KID CRITIC EMILIA'S TASTY ADVENTURES

Emilia Dives into Southwestern Flavors at

Ghost Ranch

Photos courtesy of the Hernandez family

Hey there, it's Emilia, your local, feisty 9-year-old, back to share about my latest girls' dinner date at a modern Southwestern cuisine spot, Ghost Ranch. Stepping in from the dark and rainy night, we were warmly greeted by all things Southwestern. From Aztec paintings to my favorite snake plants and cow skull head lights, this restaurant sparked my inner Arizona spirit. The booth seats sported an Aztec print, and the chairs were wrapped in cowhide, which I found super fun! Shortly after we settled in, we ordered some drinks. Keeping the water bottle on our table was a neat touch, especially since I drink loads of water! My mom appreciated the lid, safeguarding against my occasional spills.

Our waiter was incredibly friendly, even though we arrived just an hour before closing. His family was dining right next

to us, so when I asked for the best picks, he eagerly shared his favorites and the less popular items. Though there was a kids' menu featuring items like chicken enchiladas and quesadillas, I opted to venture into something new.

Choosing was hard, but I went for the Sampler Platter. It boasted a grilled skirt steak, three enchiladas—one pork, one veggie, and one chicken—and a cheesefilled chile relleno. The grilled skirt steak was my highlight; perfectly cooked with a delicious red sauce that was flavorful, spicy, and juicy all in one. How do they do that?!

I figured out that cheese-filled chile rellenos aren't my thing, but my sister loved them! Perhaps my stomach was just making room for the dairy overload I was anticipating.

On our waiter's recommendation, I indulged in the most incredible coconut tres leches cake. I'm not exactly sure

what horchata mousse is, but it pairs wonderfully with strawberries! Light, fluffy, with toasted coconut shavings on top—it was a dream.

If you ever find yourself in South Tempe, I urge you to visit Ghost Ranch for some Southwestern cuisine amidst the friendliest staff and super cool cow skull lights!

Ghost Ranch is located at 1006 E. warner Rd., #102-103, in Tempe. For more information, visit ghostranchaz.com.

Emilia Hernandez is 9 years old and eats pretty "non-kid-like" for her age. She loves things like shrimp and snails and is pretty adventurous with food. She would rather eat a cucumber pepper salad than mashed potatoes.
