LIFT-OFF Nicholas gets a behind-the-scenes look at the United Airlines training facility.
WhenI was 6 years old, I started a business called Creations by Nicholas. My business and I were featured on the national TV show, “Good Morning America.” We had to wake up for a 3 a.m. live shot! It was so much fun being on TV, and at the end of the segment they presented me with a prize to visit the United Airlines headquarters in Denver, Colorado.
Fast forward three years, and I cashed in on my prize. My family and I were flown to Denver for a special tour of the United training facility (and they don’t often do tours).
First, we checked out the simulators, machines that replicate the experience of flying an aircraft in a realistic way. The United simulators are used for a variety of purposes, including flight training,
research, and entertainment. They have all the buttons and switches pilots use when flying. My family and I learned that the simulator could challenge pilots with different types of flying conditions, like going through bad weather, allowing them to practice and perfect their skills in a safe, controlled environment.
Next, we got to see the landing slide and rafts that planes have in case of emergencies. It was neat to see, but I wouldn’t want to experience using one in a real-life scenario.
Our guide taught us that after pilots go through an initial and intensive training program, they earn their wings and become an official flight pilot. This is a very special moment in a pilot’s career, and it’s celebrated with a wing
ceremony. We got a behind-the-scenes look at a ceremony, and my brothers and I pretended to get our wings, too.
There’s also a cool museum displaying historical United Airlines items from over the years. We saw model planes, an old training simulator, and things they used on older planes.
At the end, we were gifted cool United swag! The entire experience was awesome learning all about a unique profession. And, to top things off, we stayed in The Ritz-Carlton, Denver’s new Presidential Suite! It was fun especially because they had a whole “glamping” setup for me and my brothers.

Grand Canyon Council Presents the First Annual Class of “Scouts of the Year”
Four outstanding youth nominated by Boy Scout peers.

The Grand Canyon Council (GCC), an independent non-profit organization chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Arizona, recently honored four outstanding Scouts who have made a distinct impact in the community through leadership, citizenship, Scout spirit, heroism, or community service with the inaugural 2022 Scouts of the Year.
The selected honorees will be awarded the distinction of Scout of the Year at a public event this spring. The awarded youth, Emma Hirning, Lola Money, Sergio Joel Rivera-Orbegoso, and Mason Takeushi will represent GCC throughout the
year and be involved in council events and executive board meetings.
Lola from Troop 3014 joined Scouts in 2019. She was selected as a GCC Scout of the Year for her strong leadership skills and involvement in her troop as senior patrol leader. She is currently working on her Eagle Scout project, making tangible efforts to restore Papago Park by pruning existing plants, removing invasive species, as well as planting more native plants in the aquatic areas. Her goal is to increase the biodiversity within the park, to improve the area for wildlife, and people who visit Papago Park to enjoy its natural beauty.
Sergio is a devoted Scout
from Troop 172, who is also involved in martial arts. This past year, he attended National Youth Leadership Training where he has learned how to stay focused, physically fit and delegate, in addition to communication and teamwork.
Emma helped form Troop 9142, on the day girls were invited to join Scouting in 2019. For her Eagle Scout project, she filmed, produced, and published an informative video to increase awareness of the Anonymous Alerts app used in her school district to decrease bullying threats. After sharing this video with her peers, the usage of the app increased by 520% within a year.
Mason from Troop 7031 is a
part of the Governor’s Youth Commission to help provide youth with better opportunities across the state of Arizona. He uses his communication and leadership skills to help gain better access to education for Arizona’s children.
“This is the Grand Canyon Council’s first year of hosting nominations and selecting Scouts for this prestigious award,” says GCC Scout Executive/CEO Andy Price. “We are very impressed with these youth and look forward to making the Scouts of the Year Award and annual tradition.” For more information, visit grandcanyonbsa.org. Paradise Valley High School's renowned robotics team, Team Paradise, is preparing to make their mark on the global stage as they get ready to compete in the 2023 World Championship Competition. The team's recent victory at the regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition has earned them a spot in this prestigious event, often referred to as The Ultimate Sport for the Mind.
Over 200 fifth grade Kyrene gifted students displayed inventive projects during the annual Gifted Showcase Nights on March 22 and 29. With the theme "World Solutions," students researched and devised solutions to various problems, including environmental protection, mental health support, and household tasks simplification.
Comprised of 30 dedicated students, Team Paradise (FRC Team 1165) has been making significant strides in the world of robotics. Competing under strict rules and with limited time and resources, the team will showcase their skills on April 19 to 21 in Houston, Texas, where they'll face off against other top-tier teams from around the world.
Kyrene Gifted & Talented Coordinator Beth Snyder says the capstone project aims to develop sound research skills, applying newfound knowledge to real-world issues.
Among the projects were a mental health subscription box tailored to individual needs, an anti-theft purse featuring multiple security measures, and a remote-controlled "coral conserver" designed to protect underwater coral reefs by deploying sea urchins to clean up algae-covered areas.
The World Championship Competition provides students with the opportunity to connect with other robotics enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds and cultures. By forming a network of like-minded individuals, participants share their passion for robotics and work together to overcome challenges. Team Paradise has proven itself as a formidable contender, emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the competition. CELEBRATE EARTH DAY AND PROTECT OUR PLANET!
Learn about the history of Earth Day, ways to make a difference, and family-friendly events in the Phoenix area.
By Naya Seth
It’s important to take care of our environment and the world around us. Earth Day is the perfect way to do that! Earth Day is April 22 and is celebrated globally and recognized by millions of people.
How did it come to be an official holiday, though? It started in 1970 with a Wisconsin senator and a Harvard graduate. Together, they organized the first official Earth Day, and the event was attended by 20 million people nationwide. Since then, the day has only become more and more eminent. It was first celebrated globally in 1990 by over 100 countries around the world. It’s a day to raise awareness about problems like climate change and global warming and unites people with the common goal of spreading Earth Day education, keeping the life forms of the world diverse, and advocating for switching energy from nonrenewable to renewable.
A few other ideas promoted on Earth Day are the use of organic agricultural materials, the reduction of waste and increase in recycling, and the creation of more green job opportunities. There are also many things for you to do at home to support our planet!
Some ways to celebrate Earth Day without traveling too far is to plant a small garden or even just a plant in your backyard (don’t use chemicals and pesticides!), conserve water, go to a nearby park and help clean it up, and reduce, reuse, and recycle! Locally, there are Earth Day events happening throughout the Valley. Here are a few family-friendly events to celebrate the planet:

What: Enjoy eco-conscious exhibitors, sponsors, and entertainers who will educate, empower, and inspire attendees about protecting the planet. Activities include gardening, yoga, live music, dancing, a kids' fashion show, and more.
EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
When: April 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Sanderson Ford Pavilion, 101 Easy St., Carefree
What: This free, family-friendly event features local Arizona organizations to help educate and empower the community to take better care of the Sonoran Desert, planet, and each other.
You don’t have to just care for the Earth on this one day, though. Make every day Earth Day! Even the smallest changes you make to the planet we live on can have a big impact.

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Summer Camp for Your Child
As summer approaches, parents are eagerly searching for ways to keep their children engaged and entertained during the school break. One popular option is enrolling them in a summer camp that not only keeps them active but also provides valuable life lessons. This article offers a comprehensive guide to help parents select the ideal summer camp for their young ones.
THE VALUE OF SUMMER CAMPS
Summer camps offer children a safe haven to explore, play, and interact with their peers outside their usual neighborhood, school, or home setting. Even in virtual settings, these camps serve as hubs of entertainment, learning, and enrichment. From day camps and specialty camps to online and overnight camps, summer camps provide endless opportunities for children and teenagers to relax, have fun, and develop essential social skills, independence, and self-confidence.
CHOOSING THE IDEAL CAMP FOR YOUR CHILD
With a plethora of camp options available, ranging from traditional overnight camps to science, sports, theater, and art camps, parents and children can easily find a program that aligns with their interests. To make the right choice, consider the following factors:
1. Define Your Objectives: Identify your goals for enrolling your child in a summer camp. Are you looking for daily childcare, or do you want them to enjoy time with their peers? Do you want to focus on physical activity, academic growth, or artistic development? Choose a camp that aligns with your objectives.
2. Understand Your Child's Interests: Discuss the various camps available with your child and gauge their preferences. Pay attention to the recommended age range and required skillsets. While it's essential to encourage your child to explore new
activities, be mindful of their limitations and dislikes.
3. Set a Budget: Summer camps can be expensive, so it's crucial to factor in all associated costs, including equipment, meals, and additional expenses. To accommodate your budget, explore low-cost options offered by nonprofit organizations, public parks, community centers, libraries, and online platforms.
4. Manage Time and Location: Consider the camp's drop-off and pick-up times to ensure they align with your work schedule. Plan your child's camp participation around any pre-planned vacations or time off.
5. Start Your Search Early: To secure a spot in the desired camp and avoid scheduling conflicts, begin researching and planning as early as possible. Thoroughly read the camp's terms and conditions, discuss options with your child, and make sure your final choice meets your family's needs and preferences.

EPIC KIDS PRESENTS
CAMP NOT-A-WHEEZE
In a traditional camp setting asthma education is integrated with recreational camp activities. This empowers children to understand and avoid their asthma triggers, recognize warning signals of an oncoming episode, properly use their medications, and exercise control over their disease. Serving 7- to 14-yearold children with moderate to severe asthma, camp activities include horseback riding, adventure course, lake day, music, arts, crafts, exploring the outdoors, and more! Historically, a majority of these campers would not be accepted into other camps due to the constant monitoring and medication requirements that are typically integral to asthma management. Medical volunteers can be found throughout camp (in cabins with kids, accompanying kids to activities, teaching asthma education, and staffing the infirmary).
These volunteers MUST be licensed medical professionals in order to attend.
The camp's skilled medical direction and physician team are from Phoenix Children’s Hospital & Banner Health (Cardon Children’s Medical Center) and serve in the infirmary as the camp physicians.

BILTMORE PREPARATORY ACADEMY EARNS A+
SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
AWARD
Creighton District school one of only 36 nationwide to receive coveted educational distinction.
Three cheers for the Biltmore Preparatory Academy community! The Creighton District school was one of 36 nationwide that received the coveted A+ School of Excellence award for 2022-2023, the highest state-level award given to public schools.
The distinction recognized the school’s innovative curriculum and focus on high achievement. The Arizona Educational Foundation, an organization that recognizes and celebrates excellence in public schools, sponsors the prestigious award, a title the school will have for four years.
With this award, schools are celebrated at a luncheon as well as the organization has a full court press, communicating the award nationwide.
12 | APRIL 2023 | EPIC KIDS EPIC KIDS AZ.COM Cover story
To qualify, schools must complete a comprehensive application to reach the high bar the foundation sets. Biltmore Prep’s submission shared data about instructional leadership, curriculum instruction and assessment, school organization and culture, active teaching, student support, and caregiver and community involvement.
A hallmark of Biltmore Prep is its Spanish immersion program, which facilitates biliteracy by teaching content equally in both English and Spanish. Students benefit from listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both languages and receive a leg up in high school by providing language credit. The program is offered to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
“Parents around the Valley choose our school because they want their children to be bilingual,” says Biltmore Prep’s Principal Dr. Stephanie De Mar. There was a lot of work that went into receiving this award. However, the real stars of the show were the students who prepared, hosted, and were campus leaders through the entire rigorous process!
The school was under the microscope for a day and a half as five judges observed classrooms, recess, lunch periods, drop-offs, and pick-ups. During the visit, student leaders Isaac Hernandez, Sophia Velasteguy, and Gia Mammini hosted the judges giving them tours of the campus, access to classrooms, staff meetings with other students, teachers, staff, and community, as well as a front row seat to morning announcements, all while answering questions along the way.
“I was nervous to be a part of such a significant thing for the school, we wanted the visit to be perfect,” says Isaac.
Students prepared for weeks leading up to the visit. The school hosted assemblies getting students and families enthusiastic and prepared for the visit.
“There was a lot of excitement at the school leading up to and during the visit. It was really cool to be seen as a leader in front of such an important group of people,” says Gia.
“This process was a really fun thing to be a part of, but most of all I really loved experiencing it with Isaac and Gia,” says Sophia.
This school year, Gia and Sophia had the opportunity to travel to Hermosillo, Mexico, as part of the Spanish Dual Language Program. The trip lasted five days immersing students in the rich, colorful culture, and language. Their description of their experiences was extremely helpful for the judges to have a real first-person account of the impact of the enrichment opportunities students are afforded.
Following notification that Biltmore Preparatory Academy did in fact receive the award, Sophia, Gia, and Isaac presented the award and prep it took
leading up to the visit to the Creighton Governing Board. The students were eloquent in their description of the process and their personal experiences being elevated to a leadership role on campus. The governing board was beyond impressed with the presentation and after they took a group photo with the students and staff from Biltmore Prep.
“After this experience, I feel more confident talking in front of large groups of people. I feel like I have really grown as a leader,” says Isaac.
“We are elated to have won this distinction,” says Dr. De Mar. “I know how hard our community works and how much we invest in our students. Receiving the A+ distinction was a way to showcase our efforts to create a successful school with a great place for students to learn. I truly believe we deserve it because of our curriculum and amazing teachers who reflect a positive and supportive atmosphere.”
“The students were so AWESOME!” she continues. “When it was actually time for them to show their stuff, they did so with such professionalism, enthusiasm, and character, I’m really proud of them.”
As these student leaders end this school year and prepare for their next adventure of high school, this is an experience they will never forget.

CODING INSTRUCTOR
confident with developing engineering and leadership skills. What type of training do you need to do your job?
Sukhdeep Kaur
Profession: Coding Instructor
Age: 51
What do you do for a living?
I am a coding instructor at Western Maricopa Education Center (WestMEC) and teach new and emerging technologies to high school students. I love this job because I am able to positively impact my students and foster an environment where students become
A coding job involves many different technical skills, so having industry experience helps immensely. WestMEC partners with local companies to provide students hands-on internships so they are hirable right out of high school. This proves to be beneficial to both the organizations looking to hire and our students entering the workforce. Additionally, having training in teaching and education is a must for my role as an instructor. You need to break complex subjects into simpler topics so it’s easier for students to learn!
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is working one on one with students to help them get one step closer to their goal. This job allows me to impact students on a personal level, and I find that quite meaningful.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Before entering the teaching field, I had always thought about becoming an engineer. In fact, I worked as a software engineer for over 18 years and have always enjoyed corporate culture. This work experience helps me advise my West-MEC students and provide guidance for their future careers. What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career? My advice to kids would to be to never give up or take shortcuts, even if the subject gets tough. Becoming a good engineer and coding instructor is not easy, and often requires constant learning even on the job. That said, it is a very creative and rewarding job once your programming foundation is built. One fun fact NOT about your job?
One fun fact about me is that I have been parasailing! Although I am not a big fan of heights, I do like to challenge myself and try new activities.

Brain Play Sari on SCIENCE SOUND OFF
WITH THE LYRICAL TUNE OF VIBRATIONS.
What’s that sound? Sound waves are vibrations and while music may be invisible, it doesn’t take much to know it’s there. And you don’t need a fancy guitar or a grand piano to play a song - you can create a musical instrument at home and play it with air from your very own lungs. In this activity, explore the sounds you make with a whistle crafted from a piece of paper.
You will need:
• 1 paper whistle (instructions below)
• 1 pair of scissors
Make a paper whistle:
1. With adult supervision, draw and cut out a whistle blueprint that looks like the diagram on this page.
2. Fold along dotted lines
3. Once folded, cut the small triangle from the larger bottom fold
4. Open smaller folds like a book, and gently hold against lips with
a finger on each side. Don’t press too hard or air can’t flow through easily. Purse lips and blow air into the whistle.
you think it happened? Were you able to do anything that changed the sound? What happens when you blow harder or softer? Does the sound change?
If you’d like to experience more related to the science of music, get your groove on and head over to Arizona Science Center. Discover the science of soundwaves, music, and vibration! Our exhibition, “Good Vibrations: Where Science Gets Loud,” is sure to hit all the right notes. Visit azscience.org to learn more.
Try this at home!
Before you use the whistle, hypothesize! What do you think will happen when you blow into the whistle? What sounds do you think you’ll make?
When you do use it, be sure to observe what happens! What happened when you blew into the whistle? What did you do to make the sound? Why do

AMONG THE BEASTS & BRIARS
AUTHOR: Ashley Poston
GENRE: Young Adult Fantasy
AGES: 10+
RATING: AAAAA
SYNOPSIS: Cerys is safe in the kingdom of Aloriya. Here there are no droughts, disease, or famine, and peace is everlasting. It has been this way for hundreds of years, since the first king made a bargain with the lady who ruled the forest that borders the kingdom. But as Aloriya prospered, the woods grew dark, cursed, and forbidden.
Cerys knows this all too well: when she was young, she barely escaped as the woods killed her friends and her mother. Now Cerys carries a small bit of the curse—the magic—in her blood, a reminder of the day she lost everything. The most danger she faces now, as a gardener’s daughter, is the annoying fox who stalks the royal gardens and won’t leave her alone.
As a new queen is crowned, however, things long hidden in the woods descend on the kingdom itself. Cerys is forced on the run, her only companions the small fox from the garden, a strange and powerful bear, and the magic in her veins. It’s up to her to find the legendary Lady of the Wilds and beg for a way to save her home. But the road is darker and more dangerous than she knows, and as secrets from the past are uncovered amid the teeth and roots of the forest, it’s going to take everything she has just to survive.
MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK: “I always thought that gardeners’ daughters couldn’t thrive where our roots didn’t grow. But maybe we were like dandelion tuffs.”
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS: The settings! Every place Cerys travels over the course of the story is so lush. And, being a classic fantasy world, I couldn’t help falling in love with all of its complexities.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK IS: Cerys of course! She is a compelling and multi-faceted protagonist who also deals with moving personal challenges that many readers will be able to relate to.
