From the Mound to the Lens

Nicholas Bubeck gets the inside scoop from MLB legend Randy Johnson about his photographic journey beyond baseball.

Major League Baseball (MLB) icon Randy Johnson has a passion that might surprise you.

Randy says one of his favorite memories being in MLB was watching Little League kids parade around the field, just as he once did as a kid. “It came full circle and was a very special moment,” he says. What you might not know is that the baseball megastar has a passion off the field: photography.

When Randy was in college, he worked for the school newspaper as a photographer, before becoming a very successful professional baseball player. People in Arizona nicknamed Randy the “Big Unit” because he was the tallest player in MLB history at 6-foot-10 and was a super strong

left-handed pitcher – one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

After Randy retired in 2010 and stopped playing baseball, he reconnected with his love for the camera. He loves taking pictures at concerts and has photographed musicians Billy Joel and Elton John. But most of all, he enjoys traveling to places like Africa taking pictures of people and how they live.

“I loved shooting in Ethiopia, staying in a tent, and immersing myself in the peoples’ way of life. Like them, I bathed in the river,” says Randy.

He also loves taking photos of animals, especially elephants.

“I got an awesome photo of an egret perched

on an elephant tusk with storm clouds in the background," he says.

Now, Randy is excited to share his photographs with people living in the Valley.

Through April 28, you can visit his free exhibit, “Storytelling with Photographs,” located in Center Space at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, located at 7380 E. 2nd St. There, you’ll see amazing pictures that Randy took.

For exhibit information, visit scottsdaleartslearning.org/exhibition/ storytelling-with-photographs. For more on Randy’s photos, visit rj51photos.com.

Two Valley Boys Get Scrumdiddlyumptious Role of a Lifetime in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

For Lucas Moran and AJ Riddle, playing Charlie Bucket in the Arizona Broadway Theatre production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is the role they dreamed of for years. Though they are only 10 and 11 years old, respectively, playing Charlie was definitely on their bucket list.

“I saw 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' on tour at Gammage when I was 5,” says Lucas. “I knew it was a role I wanted to play, so I practiced the songs and memorized the script and now it’s amazing to think I get to be in this production!”

Though he is a seasoned actor and has been in more than a dozen shows, this is Lucas’ first Arizona Broadway Theatre production.

That is not the case for AJ, who comes from an acting family including brothers JR, age 14, and Bennett, age 8. He’s performed in the theatre’s productions of “Mame” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

“Charlie was a huge role and there were a lot of great kids going out for it,” says AJ. “I was kind of bracing myself in case I didn’t get the role.”

AJ found out he got the lead in a really sweet way. His mom surprised him with a customized chocolate bar with a handmade

Golden Ticket that said, “Congratulations! You got the part.”

“When I saw the Golden Ticket, I jumped up and down and screamed with excitement,” says AJ. “I couldn’t believe it was happening!”

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is making its regional debut at Arizona Broadway Theatre through April 14. The musical will take audiences on a wild ride as Charlie and his friends encounter a world full of surprises, innovation and, of course, Oompa-Loompas.

Adapted from Roald Dahl’s children’s novel, the stage show includes great music and locally made set pieces and props.

While Lucas and AJ are passionate about performing, it is also a lot of hard work to be part of a big production like the ones at Arizona Broadway Theatre, located at 7701 W. Paradise Lane, in Peoria.

“Sometimes it’s exhausting with school and rehearsals, but when you get to the theatre and walk through the stage door, you get a huge wave of excitement,” says AJ. “Performing in front of a live audience gives me a boost. As soon as I step on the stage and feel the energy from the audience, I’m ready to go.”

Guitars and Giving Phoenix fourth grader gives back through music.

Photos courtesy of the Ridley Family

Being a good community citizen comes naturally to Nico Ridley. He helps friends in the hallways at school, he cleans up after himself in the cafeteria, and he always has a cheerful greeting for the cooks after breakfast.

Recently, the fourth grader at ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest Elementary was invited to join The Collective, a special group at SOUNDS Academy, an organization his mom knows well since she used to be co-chair of the group’s board of directors.

This group of 50 hardworking students exemplify the character values of creativity, leadership, perseverance, resilience, and teamwork. They attend concerts, take lessons, play in a chamber ensemble, and take theory classes. They also perform throughout the Valley, impacting the lives of others while gaining a deeper understanding of their instrument and themselves.

Nico, who plays acoustic guitar, has already played at The Nash, a historical jazz club in downtown Phoenix, and over the holidays, he took his talent to United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona’s Day Treatment for Adults center and the Early Learning Center for children.

“He has started his walk in philanthropy through music,” says Camille Ridley, who is Nico’s mom and vice president of marketing & development at United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona. “He does a short performance for the adults, but he also does one for the pre-K kids and it’s absolutely darling.”

Philanthropy aside, community plays a prominent role in other aspects of Nico’s life. In fact, it was an important factor in his enrollment at ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest.

“They do a variety of events and activities that are very culturally diverse. The campus even has murals of historical figures from the black and melanin communities,” Camille says, explaining the decision she and Nico’s father, Nikolas Ridley, made to switch to the school. “I did not grow up in a diverse school system whatsoever, so knowing that is something they focus on was really important to us.”

The school looks for unique ways to celebrate and explore diversity. For example, recently, students gathered to observe the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March, which originates in the Pilgrim Rest parking lot. It made quite an impression on Nico, who got to give a TV interview about the experience.

When he’s not attending a cultural event or giving interviews, you might find Nico in the library. An avid reader, Nico is a big fan of graphic novels like "Dogman" and "Five Nights at Freddy’s." He’s also involved in the Student Wellness Activity Team.

Keeping fit is important if he wants to explore a career with the FBI (although he’s quick to mention he might change his mind and be a news reporter instead). In the meantime, he’ll be racking up the travel miles (his favorite place to visit is Colorado) and learning more guitar music to share with the community.

From Hurricane Survivor to Youth of the Year 2024

Teen triumphs over adversity with resilience and artistic flair.

In a story of resilience and transformation, Yarieliz (Yari) Lopez, a junior at Paradise Valley Unified School District’s North Canyon High School, has been named the 2024 Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club of Arizona: Ed Robson Family Branch. This honor celebrates Yari's extraordinary journey from surviving devastating hurricanes to becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration in Phoenix.

Yari and her family moved to Phoenix in 2019, after hurricanes ravaged her native Puerto Rico. Adapting to a new life in Phoenix presented its own set of challenges, and Yari initially struggled to find her place. However, her life took a positive turn when she discovered the Boys and Girls Club. There, she found much more than just activities and programs; she found a community that helped her cope with her past losses, build resilience, and gain the confidence to become the best version of herself.

At the club, Yari immersed herself in the fine arts programs, finding solace and expression in theatre performance. Beyond the stage, she enjoys studying with friends and unwinding with games of pool, creating a

well-rounded club experience. These activities have not only allowed her to connect with other students who share similar interests but also played a crucial role in shaping her identity.

"I am not giving away my shot,” a quote from the musical “Hamilton,” resonates deeply with Yari, mirroring her resolve to embrace every opportunity life presents. Post high school, she aspires to join the military and pursue further education in fine arts, aiming to combine her passion with her dedication to serving her country.

Yari's story is a source of inspiration, showing that with resilience, support, and passion, one can emerge stronger and ready to shape a promising future.

Young Changemaker

Middle schooler Elie De La Garza awarded for compassion in science education.

Photo courtesy of Animalearn Ayoung voice for animals and an advocate for compassionate science, Elie De La Garza of Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory, has been named the 2023 Humane Science Middle School Student of the Year by Animalearn. This recognition spotlights Elie's commitment to promoting kindness and respect for animals in scientific education. Animalearn, a humane science education program, annually honors students who demonstrate exceptional compassion in science. This year, the award found its way to three students across various educational levels throughout the country. Alongside Elie, Michele Graham from the College of Charleston, South Carolina, and Katie Carson from Bishop Watterson High School in Ohio, were celebrated as the Humane College Student and High School Student of the Year, respectively.

Elie's journey as an advocate for humane science is as inspiring as it is impactful. His choices, including a personal decision not to eat meat and his refusal to attend zoos, reflect a deepseated respect for animal life. Elie's innovative approach to a science project, where he opted to photograph insects rather than end their lives, illustrates his dedication to finding alternative methods in science that do not harm animals.

This middle schooler's firm stance against dissecting a fetal pig, choosing instead to utilize Animalearn’s free loan program, The Science Bank, has not gone unnoticed. “Animals are vulnerable species that need to be cared for instead of harmed, especially in the name of science. There has to be better ways to do science,” Elie says. “Animals are my friends….and I don’t dissect my friends!”

As recipients of this honor, Elie, along with Michele and Katie, received gift cards and Humane Science Education Action Packs from Animalearn. These tools are designed to support their ongoing efforts to foster a more compassionate and respectful approach to science education.

Rancho Solano Students Contribute to Literary Success of “Pegasus” Publication Headliners

Photos courtesy of Vera Zuch, Max Duncan, and Avery Shafron

Introducing some key members of the editorial team of "Pegasus," the high school newspaper at Rancho Solano Preparatory School. This team recently earned a Superior rank in the national Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest.

Vera Zuch, Max Duncan, and Avery Shafron are pivotal contributors to both the literary magazine and the student newspaper. They work to ensure each edition of “Pegasus” is a hit. Invited by their English teacher, Mrs. McCarty, during sophomore

year, Avery leads the newspaper segment, while Vera and Max contribute to the magazine.

The student newspaper covers a range of topics including academics, arts, and athletics. Avery, in charge of assembling the newspaper, carefully selects from the submissions, distributing the final product to the student body. For the literary magazine, Vera and Max, as assistant editorsin-chief, play a crucial role in choosing and compiling content.

Each team member brings a unique perspective to the table. While reviewing submissions, they look for standout qualities like creativity and literary merit. They rarely disagree, but when they do, their diverse viewpoints often lead to a reassessment, enriching

the content. Avery, who mainly handles the formatting using InDesign, has added a creative touch by incorporating animations into the digital newspaper.

One major challenge they face is adhering to deadlines. Crafting a perfect edition requires time, and balancing the number of submissions across different categories can be tricky. They strive for diversity, ensuring no single writer dominates any section.

Through working on “Pegasus,” the team has learned invaluable lessons about the importance of open-mindedness, teamwork, and effective communication. These skills are crucial not only in journalism but also in creating a healthy business environment.

“Pegasus” has been a consistent participant in the REALM contest, achieving high ranks annually. After securing the Superior rank this year and First Class last year, the team is aiming even higher for the next. They're using feedback from the contest as a learning tool, continuously striving to grow and improve.

Naya Seth, 13 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

Adventure Awaits

Bouldering Project offers fun and fitness for the entire family.

Step into the world of Bouldering Project, where families find more than just climbing walls – they discover a vibrant, inclusive community pulsing with adventure and connection. This isn't your average climbing gym; it's a dynamic space where kids and parents alike can challenge themselves, forge new friendships, and participate in an array of activities that go beyond the boulder. With locations in cities like Seattle, Austin, and now Tempe, Bouldering Project is reshaping the concept of family fitness and fun, one climb at a time.

12 | MARCH 2024 | EPIC KIDS EPIC KIDS AZ.COM Cover story

"It's really about making bouldering accessible and enjoyable for everyone," says Jordan Brown, the community marketing manager at Bouldering Project, "Whether you're a seasoned climber or a first timer, our doors are open."

The facility, boasting over 50,000 square feet, includes dedicated yoga and fitness studios, a fitness center, and an extensive climbing area. The innovative color circuit system for climbing routes makes the activity more approachable. "Instead of intimidating grades, we have colors. It encourages exploration and fun," Jordan explains.

A significant draw for families is the Bouldering Project's dedication to youth engagement. "Kids are natural climbers," he says, "We have programs like our climbing clubs – Pebbles (ages 4 to 6), Rocks (ages 7 to 10), and Boulders (ages 11 to 14), designed to make climbing a fun, educational learning experience." These clubs, along with popular spring break and summer camps, offer structured, skill-building sessions for kids.

"At Bouldering Project, we offer specially designed programs and camps for school-aged children, tailored to accommodate climbers of all skill levels. Our approach prioritizes reducing stress and easing the fears associated with heights and falling, ensuring climbing is accessible and enjoyable for every child. The essence of our curriculum is to make climbing not just a sport but a fun, shared experience. We emphasize the joy of climbing and the camaraderie it builds, rather than focusing solely on skill level or competition,” says Jordan.

It's important to note that Bouldering Project’s popular youth programs and camps are in high demand, and spaces fill up quickly. “We operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage families to sign up early to secure their spot in these enriching and enjoyable programs,” he says. But it's not just about climbing. Bouldering Project places a high value on holistic fitness and community

engagement. "We offer a vast range of yoga and fitness classes," says Jordan, emphasizing the inclusivity of their offerings. Events like movie screenings and family days further enhance the sense of community. "We aim to create a space that's safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all," he adds.

Bouldering Project's commitment to community extends beyond climbing and fitness. The community art program is an example of this, allowing local artists to display their art throughout Bouldering Project and sell their art without commission. "It's been a big hit," Jordan says. "It lets people showcase their talents."

For parents, there are ample opportunities to join in the fun or enjoy some alone time. "We have adultfocused events and classes too, like our social climbing gatherings and technique classes," Jordan says. The onsite coffee cart and partnership with a local food vendor add a convenient and enjoyable aspect to visits.

"We're much more than just a climbing gym; we're a family-friendly wellness and community center," he says. A notable feature that parents can look forward to is the enhanced cold plunge experience, currently available a few times a week and soon to become a permanent amenity. Bouldering Project is also adding saunas to its amenities.

"Membership is an all-access pass. This includes not just our top-notch climbing facilities but also our yoga and fitness classes, workout facility, and complimentary guest passes. Soon we will also have our wellness features like the cold plunges and saunas available full-time.” says Jordan. The inclusive membership model ensures that families can enjoy a diverse array of activities, catering to all ages and interests under one roof, at an affordable cost.

Bouldering Project is located at 2626 S. Hardy Dr., in Tempe. For more information, call 480-716-9014 or visit boulderingproject.com/location/tempe.

KID CRITIC EMILIA'S TASTY ADVENTURES

Delicious discoveries await at North Italia.

Photos courtesy of the Hernandez family

Hello, I'm Emilia! I'm a 9-year-old Arizona native with a love of all things delicious! One of my favorite restaurants is North Italia, and I've been to almost all of their Arizona locations.

When you first walk in, they have some amazing decor, including my favorite, snake plants, and you are surrounded by farmhouse tables and an industrial vibe. We got to sit at our table right away and quickly ordered our appetizers! The staff were incredibly friendly and respectful. I liked that they treated me like a big kid, even though my dad says I'm little! We sat outside because it was a beautiful sunny day and got to see plants, birds, and bike rides. It was very peaceful and quiet.

The kids' menu has your "normal" kidfriendly choices, like chicken tenders,

spaghetti, and pizza. Since I'm not supposed to eat dairy, I chose a salad off the big kid menu instead, so I could also order my favorite butter-covered appetizer and not have too much dairy. The shrimp scampi appetizer is the legit reason I love North Italia. It is so buttery, and I love that it comes with toast instead of pasta! Because who doesn’t love dipping bread into buttery goodness?

I even got to watch them hand cut pasta and slice meat, which made me even more excited for the Italian farm salad because it had salami on top! I also liked how colorful the salad was because rainbow is my favorite color.

Another thing I loved is when they sang “Happy Birthday” and brought a cupcake to the table next to us. I thought it was sweet and it inspired me to order the donut holes! They were so light and fluffy and covered with powdered sugar. I think they were supposed to be

dessert, but I say they would make the perfect breakfast! They even had a berry jam, which I'm pretty sure can count as a serving of fruit.

Either way, I had such a good time. I definitely recommend heading to one of their locations for an amazing kidfriendly brunch or dinner where you can literally order anything off the menu and be over the moon with your selection! For more information on North Italia, visit northitalia.com.

“A SCATTER OF LIGHT”

AUTHOR: Malinda Lo

GENRE: Young Adult Fiction

AGES: 11+

RATING: AAAAA

SYNOPSIS: Aria Tang West was looking forward to a summer on Martha's Vineyard with her best friends—one last round of sand and sun before college. But after a graduation party goes wrong, Aria's parents exile her to California to stay with her grandmother, artist Joan West. Aria expects boredom, but what she finds is Steph Nichols, her grandmother's gardener. Soon, Aria begins second-guessing who she is and what she wants to be, and a summer that once seemed lost becomes unforgettable—for Aria, her family, and the working-class community Steph introduces her to. It's the kind of summer that changes a life forever.

“THE STORM”

AUTHOR: Cynthia Ryland

GENRE: Fiction

AGES: 4 - 8

MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK IS: “This is what I’ve learned: The art is greater than you and your feelings. You have to serve it. It is not you.”

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS: The emphasis on character development. I found the ever-changing relationships between the characters to be the novel's most compelling and thoughtfully crafted aspect.

MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK IS: Joan West! While she wasn’t the main character, her presence was the most influential in my interpretation of the story.

FANS OF THIS BOOK MAY ALSO LIKE: “Last Night at the Telegraph Club” by Malinda Lo, “She Gets the Girl” by Rachael Lippincott, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker

Avery, 17, is an avid reader and book reviewer. When not reading, you can find her playing volleyball, hanging out with friends, or with one of her pets! Follow her on Instagram and TikTok at @readbyfin.

MANU’S SELECTIONS

SYNOPSIS: This book is about a cat named Pandora and she is a lighthouse keeper. One day a dog named Seabold went on his boat, but a storm happens on the same day. Luckily, Pandora saves him and Seabold lives with her. A few months later, Seabold sees a crate with a tiny red flag. Seabold went out to get it and inside is something very precious.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK: I like how the story goes from lonely cat to cat and dog and then cat, dog, and mice. In other words, Pandora gets a family. This story is also about kindness, which is always very important in life. If you spot someone being unkind, don’t be unkind back, tell them to stop or be kind to them and they will be kind in the future.

“THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY”

AUTHOR: Trenton Lee Stewart

GENRE: Fiction

AGES: 8 - 11

SYNOPSIS: This book is about a boy named Reynard Muldoon and his friends. They take Mr. Benedict’s tests and pass. Their mission: to stop evil Mr. Curtain from brainsweeping everyone in the world and giving them amnesia. Will the MBS team pass the most important test of all? Or will they fail to succeed?

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK: I like how this book is adventurous and that is really exciting at some moments. Constance’s test answers are really funny along with the slang that she uses. This book is about teamwork too. Sometimes you think that you can do everything by yourself and then you realize that you need teamwork to succeed. You can test yourself right along with the MBS. This book was made into a series and is available on Disney+.

“WHO IS MALALA YOUSAFZAI?”

AUTHOR: Dinah Brown

GENRE: Non-fiction

AGES: 8 – 10

SYNOPSIS: Malala Yousafzai is a girl who loved to learn but was told that girls would no longer be allowed to go to school. She wrote a blog that called attention to what was happening in her country and realized that words can bring about change. She has continued to speak out for the right of all children to have an education. In 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK: This is a beautiful book for someone who wants to pick up a non-fiction book. Malala is a brave girl and is an awesome role model for girls. You will be fascinated with Malala and the many challenges she has overcome and her continual fight for the rights of girls.

ECO-EXPLORER AND EARTH DEFENDER

Jessie Pearl’s quest for a greener planet as a freshwater scientist.

Jessie Pearl

Profession: Freshwater Scientist, The Nature Conservancy (TNC)

Age: 32

What do you do for a living?

I am a scientist for The Nature Conservancy (TNC). I think about big questions on how our Earth is changing and how to best preserve our natural resources. I use data collected from the natural environment - trees, soils, water – to understand how our climate is changing, and how we expect hazards like storms, earthquakes, floods, and droughts to change in the future.

What type of training do you need to do your job?

Anyone can be a scientist! Formally, I have a PhD in geosciences. Informally, the best training is getting out with other experts (biologists, hydrologists, ecologists, geologists, etc.) to see how they design experiments, think about problems, and question the world around them.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love getting out into the field. I get to explore some incredible places when I collect data! I have collected

samples (tree cores, sediment, or water) across the world. I am thrilled when the science I participate in is utilized to inform policy or management practices. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I always wanted to go on adventures, climb mountains, travel, try new food. For a long time, I wanted to study penguins in Antarctica!

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?

Any chance you get to accompany someone doing fieldwork, shadow in a lab, or fix something – do it! Join a citizen science campaign to track the seasons, plants, or water flow. Never stop questioning the natural environment and how we can heal our earth.

One fact NOT about your job?

Seeing firsthand some of the devastating impacts of climate change, pollution, and negligence on our natural world is one.

SPA RKLING CLOVERS

Grow your own shamrock crystals.

Get ready to channel the luck of the Irish with a dazzling science project perfect for kids aged 8 to 14! This experiment combines creativity, basic chemistry, and the festive spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

MATERIALS

• Borax (found in the laundry aisle; remember, it's natural but not safe to ingest or inhale, so handle with care)

• Boiling water

• A wide-mouth glass mason jar

• Green and white pipe cleaners

• String

• A pencil

• Food coloring (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Shape Your Shamrock:

Twist your pipe cleaners into a shamrock shape. You can find shamrock templates online for guidance.

2. Prepare Your Solution:

For each mason jar, mix three cups of boiling water with ½ cup of Borax. The more saturated your solution, the larger your crystals will grow. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved, and the solution is clear. Add a few drops of food coloring if you wish.

3. Suspend Your Shamrock:

Tie a string around the stem of your pipe cleaner shamrock, then tie the other end to a pencil. Gently lower the shamrock into the solution, ensuring it doesn't touch the sides or bottom of the jar. Place the jar in a spot where it won't be disturbed.

4. Wait for the Magic:

Let the jar sit undisturbed overnight. By morning, your pipe cleaner shamrock will be transformed into a sparkling, crystal-encrusted decoration.

5. Display Your Creation:

Carefully remove the shamrock from the solution, cut off the string, and display it in your window to catch the light.

EDUCATIONAL TWIST

This fun project is not only a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day but also offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the science behind crystal formation.

Discuss how a supersaturated solution allows for crystal growth on the pipe cleaner's surface, illustrating the principles of solubility, saturation, and crystallization. It's a magical blend of learning and festive crafting!

Square Watermelons:

In Japan, a select few farmers grow square watermelons by cultivating them in square boxes. They're easier to stack and store, but also very expensive because of their rarity.

March Named After Mars: The month of March was named after Mars, the Roman god of war. This is because in ancient Rome, March was the first month of the year and the time when warfare would resume after the winter months. It marked the beginning of a season for both farming and fighting.

Octopuses Have Three Hearts: Octopuses have two hearts that pump blood to the gills and one that pumps it to the rest of the body.

QA Cat's Jump: A house cat can jump up to six times its length in one leap.
