Message from the Headmaster

Our Senior School Council representatives enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, including a tour followed by a workshop designed to develop pupils’ understanding of the law making process The highlight was a fascinating question-and-answer session with their local MP, Zoe Franklin On the same evening, an online meeting provided further details about the upcoming choir tour to Paris Pupils will have the opportunity to perform at two extraordinary churches: Église de la Madeleine and Église Saint‑Sulpice. Rehearsals of the concert repertoire are already well underway.

On Wednesday, pupils in Years 9 to 11 took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, which is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency. Scholarly endeavours continued for those who had signed up for the World Scholars Cup, a joint club with their peers at St Teresa’s.

On Thursday, teachers hosted the first of the Year 9 parents’ evenings. These provided an opportunity for pupils and their parents to hear how pupils are progressing across subjects and to support them in making informed and exciting decisions about their GCSE options

Mr

School Council Trip to Parliament

Our Senior School Council representatives enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament this week After touring the building, pupils took part in a workshop designed to develop their understanding of petitions. They presented their ideas for new laws and explained why they felt these were necessary. Teachers acted as MPs and asked challenging questions about their proposals, which led to some interesting debates

Pupils also took part in a question-and-answer session with Zöe Franklin, MP for Guildford, who was keen to hear their thoughts on how their local area could be improved.

Mr Savvides

Last Saturday saw our U14 and U16 hockey teams take to the field against strong opposition from Kings College Wimbledon. Both matches were played with impressive energy and commitment, showcasing excellent teamwork and resilience The highlight of the morning came from our U16 squad, who secured a well deserved 1–0 victory after a tightly contested game. The week continued with a busy schedule of football fixtures On Tuesday, our U14 teams were in action across three matches, two competitive encounters against Glyn School and a third fixture versus Thomas’s College All three games provided valuable match experience and demonstrated real progress from our players.

Midweek sport remained full of activity. The U16 1st XI travelled away on Wednesday for their fixture, while Cranmore hosted Reigate Grammar School for an U16 2nd XI contest Both matches offered strong opposition and gave our players an excellent platform to develop both individually and as teams That same afternoon, the pitches were alive with excitement as we held five U12 and U13 rugby matches. The boys showed tremendous spirit and determination throughout, with plenty of positive performances across all squads To round off the week, our U15 football teams completed the block fixture against Thomas’s with two well fought matches, bringing a busy and rewarding week of sport to a close.

Murray Cup - commencing Friday 30th January

Cranmore and Rokeby sporting fixtures are remarkably long standing. The schools share a common set of sporting values. This trophy completes the circle of sporting competitions between the two schools following the Henkes Shield (Football) and the Phillips Travers Trophy (Cricket). Jake Murray left Rokeby in 2016 after captaining the 1st XV in his final year His favourite team to play against was always Cranmore, hence the beginning of the Murray Cup Annually, many matches are played between the two schools and in rugby, 8 fixtures count towards this prestigious cup These fixtures, age groups U9s to U13s, started this afternoon on The Henderson. We wish everyone taking part the best of luck.

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew

While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men ” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Reflection

In this week’s story, we are reminded of how Jesus called His first disciples, inviting ordinary people to take part in extraordinary work. On Saturday 31st January, the Church celebrates the life of St John Bosco Born in 1815, St John Bosco was an Italian priest and educator who devoted his life to supporting disadvantaged young people He was known for his compassionate approach, placing emphasis on reason, faith and kindness rather than punishment Through the establishment of schools, workshops and homes, he provided not only shelter but also practical skills and spiritual guidance. His legacy lives on through the worldwide Salesian family, which continues to help young people grow in dignity, faith and opportunity

Prayer

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefit which you have given me; for all the pains and insults which you have borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day, Amen
