Message from the Headmaster

Art pupils in Years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to see their subject brought to life through an enriching trip to the National Gallery, allowing them to deepen their learning in a practical and inspiring context.

GCSE PE pupils participated in their final GCSE practical assessment and moderation, giving them the opportunity to enhance their performance by acting on feedback provided last term Our Year 9 cohort spoke with teachers and began thoughtfully considering their GCSE option choices, taking their first formal step towards shaping the next phase of their education.

On Wednesday, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors met. This pupil led initiative provides a forum for pupils to discuss and recommend actions to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across school life

The fixture programme continued across a variety of sports, including rugby, football, squash, swimming and hockey Super Saturday saw the long standing Murray Cup fixture against Rokeby continue, having started on Friday and concluding on Tuesday, with Cranmore winning overall and retaining the trophy We are very proud of Kobey in Year 11, who recently represented the Harlequins U17 team, scoring two tries and contributing to a memorable victory over Northampton Saints.

My sincere thanks go to all staff, pupils, parents and visiting schools for their contributions to making this another full and exciting week.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Meeting

On Wednesday morning, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee met over pastries to share updates on the initiatives they are developing One of these includes plans for a forthcoming assembly, where staff will share insights into their own heritage

The committee will also be working closely with some of our younger pupils in a mentoring role, using games and role play to help promote inclusivity and respect for everyone We are extremely grateful to our pupil ambassadors for being such positive role models and for encouraging us all to reflect on how we can continue to grow as a more inclusive community.

Senior Chamber Choir Trip to Paris

The fifteen choristers from Senior Chamber Choir going to Paris in late February are working hard on the pieces that they will sing in the two concerts In addition to their performances, they will enjoy a day at Disneyland and see some of the famous sights of this wonderful city.

Yorkshire Pudding Day
Our fabulous caterers, Harrisons, delighted us with a Yorkshire Pudding Day on which Yorkshire puddings were served with a delicious array of filling and sauces.

Warhammer Club

It has been a pleasure to resume the lunchtime Warhammer Club for Senior pupils on Thursday lunchtimes this term. The boys have thoroughly enjoyed bringing in their models, painting, discussing strategies, and holding mini skirmishes on the tabletop battlefield From carefully assembled Space Marines to ranks of Stormcast Eternals, the hobby has truly taken root, with pupils proudly mustering their own growing warbands Mr Penfold has also managed to acquire a school ‘starter pack’ of resources direct from Warhammer, complete with paints, units and gaming accessories an exciting supply drop that has been great fun to unbox and bring into play!

If any other Senior School pupils would like to join the fray, raise a banner and speak to Mr Lamport or Mr Penfold you would be most welcome!

Year 11 pupil Kobey M enjoyed a fantastic opportunity as he represented Harlequins U17s against Northampton U17s. This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew

And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “ a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him

Reflection

The Presentation of the Lord shows us faithfulness lived quietly. Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple in obedience and trust, offering what they have In Simeon and Anna, we see lives shaped by patient waiting, prayer and hope They recognise in this child the light God has promised a light that comforts but also challenges, revealing truth and calling for response. Candlemas reminds us that Christ comes gently, often unnoticed, yet his light changes everything

Prayer

God of faithfulness and promise, you fulfilled the hopes of Simeon and Anna when they welcomed Christ into your holy temple. As we celebrate the Presentation of your Son, shine your light into our hearts

Dispel the shadows of fear, weariness and doubt. Teach us to wait patiently and to recognise your presence in ordinary moments. Amen.

Please see below the invitation to our next Effingham Sixth Form Open Evening, for those currently in Year 10, to be held on Tuesday 10th February 2026 from 6pm to 7.30pm.
