Fishing / Hunting - Autumn and Spring - See location in map, page 56 Many of Iceland’s leading salmon and trout streams and rivers are located in the North. Fresh and unpolluted, they receive the salmon in summer and provide it with optimal conditions. Not to be forgotten are the numerous lakes near lowland farms, among lofty mountains, or up in the highlands. These lakes are replete with energetic arctic char and muscular brown trout that provide a dream catch for the fisherman. Those wishing to fish on the deep blue ocean can choose sea angling, with departures from several harbours; see the chapter on boat tours. For fishing permits and availability, please contact the tourist information centres all over the north of Iceland.Hunting and shooting game is also becoming popular in the north. In autumn it is possible to hunt the greylag goose and in November-December ptarmigan shooting is allowed over a certain period. For further information on these sports, please contact tourist information centres in the north.
