The past few weeks have been very hectic in my household, preparing for the Christmas festivities, including having an extra guest in my house, in the form of a naughty scout elf all the way from the North Pole! The elf has caused no end of chaos around the house so far, but seeing my 7-year old son’s reaction each morning has been priceless!

It’s now only weeks away until myself and my 16-year-old daughter take on the challenge of cycling from Vietnam-Cambodia. We will be joined by 16 other lovely friends, all helping to raise money and awareness for The AMMF Cholangiocarcinoma cancer charity, a cause very close to my heart following my own battle.

The Twelve Days of Christmas - not just a nursery rhyme There are so many traditions surrounding Christmas that we take for granted without ever thinking about their origins. One of the most popular - the singing of The Twelve Days Of Christmas - has its origins in a much darker period of history than one might imagine. To most people, the carol is a delightful nonsense rhyme set to music. But it had a quite serious purpose when it was written, and was a good deal more than a pretty melody about a list of strange gifts.

Between 1558 to 1829, Catholics in England were emancipated and prohibited from any practice of their faith - either private or public - by law. It was, in fact, a crime to be a Catholic.

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written in England as a “catechism song” to help young Catholics learn the tenets of their faith. It was a memory aid, used in the times when to be caught with anything in “writing” indicating adherence to the Catholic faith could not only get you imprisoned, it could get you hanged, drawn and quartered - a rather peculiar and ghastly punishment that didn’t appear to be practised anywhere else.

The gifts described in the song are not gifts in the traditional sense of the word; rather, they are hidden references to the teachings of the Catholic faith. For example, the “true love” mentioned in the song doesn’t refer to an earthly suitor, but to God Himself.

The “me” who receives the presents refers to every baptized person.

The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, much in memory of the expression of Christ’s sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered thee under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but thou wouldst not have it so...”

The other symbols have the following meanings: Two Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments Three French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues Four Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists Five Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which gives the history of man’s fall from grace.

Six Geese A-laying = the six days of creation Seven Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments Eight Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes Nine Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit Ten Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments Eleven Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles Twelve Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed.

You will need (pic 1) Polystyrene ring wreath Raffia feathers & birds Scissors, glue & pins

Step By Step Instructions…

1. Start by wrapping the raffia around the polystyrene ring, make sure it is securely attached, I tied small knots in the back & pin lose pieces. (pic 2) 2. When the ring is covered with the raffia start attaching the feather via the spike end into the polystyrene, use glue to secure if required. I used bigger feathers at the back and smaller ones at the front.

Roast Pheasant Pheasant makes a nice change from chicken, and this recipe gives a richness to the meat, while madeira gravy adds something special.

Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS 2 pheasants 1 apple, chopped 4 rashers streaky bacon seasoning For the gravy: 2 tbsp madeira 1-2 tsp arrowroot or cornflour 300ml game or chicken stock METHOD Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, gas mark 5.

Lay the rashers of bacon over the breast meat and put some apple and pepper into the main cavity of the birds.

Arrange the birds in a large roasting tin, pour the stock around the outside and roast in the oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the birds are cooked.

When the pheasants are cooked, lift onto a carving board, cover with foil and leave to stand for 10 minutes.

Prepare the gravy. Tip the cooking juices into a jug and skim away excess fat. If necessary, make up to 300ml with water. Return the juices to the roasting tin with the madeira and bring to the boil, simmering for a few minutes until a good flavour is obtained.

Mix the arrowroot or cornflour with a little water and blend into the hot stock.

Season to taste with pepper and strain into a gravy boat.

Serve the pheasant with the gravy and a selection of roasted vegetables and/or parsnip chips.

31 Weston Christmas Light Display 2018

The Christmas light display at Carters Green Farm in Weston, near Crewe, is renowned throughout the area and shows the true spirit of Christmas.

For Graham Witter and his family, this will be the sixth year they’ve put on this display to fundraise for the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice.

The event began as a way of remembering Graham’s late sister, Jessica, who spent time at the Donna Louise and who loved twinkling lights, bright colours and sounds.

Graham’s dedication to the event has resulted in over £65,000 being raised to date.

Graham explained: “As a family we know what other families are going through and it’s wonderful to know that in some small way we are helping by supporting Donna Louise Hospice, who in turn can support them.”

Every year Graham makes sure the display gets bigger and better – and 2018 is no exception with 1,600 LED lights on the Christmas Tree alone!

For the second year running, the magical event is being sponsored by Swansway Motor Group.

Their up-front donation has enabled Graham to invest in new and exciting displays, as well as assisting the Donna Louise Hospice.

Enjoy the Christmas light extravaganza from 1st-28th December, with lights on from 6.15pm daily (off at 9pm).

Andrea’s AMMF Army – Fundraising update…

My name is Andrea and I run these little directories that you are reading, as many of you know I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in October 2015 called Cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). This cancer has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. The AMMF is the UK’s only Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Charity, dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts: providing information and support, campaigning to raise awareness, and encouraging Andrea & Karen and supporting research.

Polar Post Over the past 2 1/2 years with the help of my friends, I have organized lots of various fundraising events, from Charity Ladies Nights, climbing The Three Peaks, Firewalking, a Mad Hatter Cycle Tea Party and the pinnacle of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with my son and friends in February this year!

Our most recent fundraiser was at The Christmas Market at Sandbach Rugby Club, we organized a letter to Santa post and raffle and raised £418.16 on the day! People and businesses have been so generous with their support, and all together so far, we have raised over a whopping £37,527 (with gift aid £51,473)!

My next big fundraising challenge is now only weeks away Cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia!

On the 16th February 2019, I will be setting off on this amazing and challenging adventure. Joining me on this trip will be my 16-yearold daughter Amelia, some familiar faces from my Kilimanjaro team – Michelle Johnson and Simon Gregory and some new recruits to my AMMF Army - Anne Holdcroft, Marie Williams, Jackie McMillan, Sharon Newton, Sally Murray, Nicky Trevor, Oly Rhodes, Dean Gatley, Darren Jones, Andy Milner, Joe Gregory, Debs Darlington, Rachel Price & Nicola Hall!

This will be a massive challenge for us all, many of my team have also been affected by cancer and have also lost loved ones and wish to help me raise awareness and much needed funds for the AMMF cancer charity.

Before we go, we are doing a charity bag pack at Morrisons in Middlewich on Sunday the 23rd December 10am-4pm, please come along and support us on the day, along with any last-minute Christmas food shopping, you could pop any loose change into our collection buckets!

Every penny raised helps fund valuable research into ways of trying to identify this deadly cancer earlier, and hopefully will help save more lives going forward!

I’m continuing to have scans every few months and have been told this devasting cancer could come back at any stage, setting myself these challenges has helped me to stay positive and focused.
