Essa Foundation Academies Trust Weekly Round Up 23rd September 2022
On Monday we closed for the national bank holiday to honour Queen Elizabeth II in her state funeral.
Staff and students watched from their homes and as I’m sure you’ll agree, experienced an emotional, memorable and moving procession and service.
This was the first of its kind in our lifetime and it was extremely sad, whilst also being exceptional. On Tuesday students and staff shared their thoughts and agreed that they felt very proud to be British.
In honour of the our late Queen and new King, we continue to teach and embody our British Values every day and celebrate living in this wonderful country and community.

BBC Share Your Story
On Wednesday 21st September we welcomed the BBC into Essa Academy as part of their #ShareYourStory tour. It was wonderful to hear inspirational talks from their employees; the students were hooked! Thank you.
Essa Academy Rap School!
On Tuesday our English faculty hosted a series of workshops through Rap School! The Rap School run educational rap and spoken word workshops for young people. Rap and spoken word poetry are an alternative way to teach literacy, poetic techniques and vocabulary through creative writing. Learning to collaborate and perform raps and performance poetry aloud helps build confidence and improve communication skills. Our students loved it!
The new Young Writers Competition is here! Last year we had some wonderful entries which resulted in students’ work being published. We encourage all to join in again and can’t wait to read the creative ideas you come up with. See Miss Antrobus or Mrs Hayes for more information.

Essa Primary Reception
Reception have been exploring different ways to practise their number recognition and phonics. The children have loved writing new graphemes outside with large pieces of chalk and recognising numbers to 10 on a large number track.
Essa Primary Year 1
In Year 1, we have been learning about our local area in Geography. We learnt about different types of housing and features around school and then looked on Google Maps. The children enjoyed recreating their own 3D maps showing what our local area looks like.
Essa Primary Year 2
In English, we have been reading ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We have created story maps, retold the story orally and started to innovate our own versions of the story.
Essa Primary Year 3
In Science, we investigated which surface created the most friction. We measured how far the car travelled on each surface and found that the jumper had the most friction and the table had the least.
Essa Primary Year
In Year 4 we have been exploring properties of different states of matter. We weighed different fizzy drinks, stirred them until they went flat and then weighed them again. We discovered the gases do in fact have mass!

Essa Primary Year 5
In Year 5 we have been exploring the book “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens. We have explored the characters, setting, historical vocabulary. We have worked hard using text to complete: point, evidence and explain tasks. Currently, we are writing the next chapter in the story. For homework we could write a dairy extract as a workhouse child and this example is the first page of Zainab’s writing in Giraffes – well done!
