Transition Guide 2022 - 2023

In October we achieved a ‘Good’ judgement from Ofsted. We are delighted but we now aim to be outstanding!
Welcome to Essa Academy
Mr M. Knowles
IPrincipalamdelighted
to welcome you to Essa Academy. Essa Academy is an integral part of our locality and together we will ensure Essa continues to be a school we are all proud of.

But what is success? Is it just academic? Personal? Or is it a mixture of the two? I believe in ensuring our students leave Essa with a skill set that prepares them for future employment. I believe that qualifications get you an interview; it’s the person who gets the job. We have to deliver both.
Students have one chance at a secondary education and have 1000 school days to be the best they can be. My job is to ensure every day counts so ‘All Will Succeed’. Learning should be exciting, challenging and fun. Essa provides a unique blend of opportunities to ensure this happens.
First and foremost I am a public servant whose job is to serve the students and ensure that they get the best opportunities to excel, create wealth and become positive role models within society. We will succeed!

Above all else, I want students to walk through our doors happy and excited to be here. I look forward to meeting you all soon!
Miss S O’Connor - stacey.oconnor@efatrust.org Designated Safeguarding Lead Director of Safeguarding, Personal Development and TransitionWellbeing Leader Mr M Wood - matthew.wood@efatrust.org Head of Year 7

Myself and the pastoral team have high expectations for all students: We believe that excellent attendance, punctuality, behaviour and uniform all contribute in helping them make the most progress possible. There are lots of opportunities available for students to improve their personal development skills. This includes Essa Experience days, student leadership team and prefects.
Myself along with the Year 7 pastoral team want to ensure that we get to know each student as individuals, so that we are able to support each of them on their learning journey. We will ensure students are organised with excellent attendance and ready to learn, that uniform and equipment are correct and that behaviour meets the high standards we set throughout the Academy. I look forward to getting to know as many parents and carers as possible during the school year.
My role is to ensure that every student has a transition that is happy, smooth and successful. Once they join Essa Academy it’s my responsibility to support and address any barriers students are struggling with, ensuring they are always safe.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the class of 2027 to Essa Academy. My role is to ensure that every student has an enjoyable, memorable and most importantly successful first year on their journey through the Academy.
The transition from Primary to Secondary can be a daunting one for both students and parents. You have entrusted your child’s future to us and for that reason myself and my team are delighted to be supporting them in building the foundations for success at the Academy, during their first year as an Essa student.

“Essa Academy is an integral part of the local community and together we will ensure Essa continues to be a school of which we are all proud.” M Knowles

At Essa Academy we believe that high quality careers advice, guidance and support are key in preparing students for their next steps in life and to manage those vital stepping stones from learning and training into the world of work. We prepare our students to have high aspirations and provide careers education from Year 7 to 11 with the intention for students to be prepared for life after Essa.

The Essa Experience provides 60 unique opportunities for students from Years 7 - 11 to take part in a wide range of opportunities to enhance their learning along side the curriculum. The programme is designed to allow students to develop their skills and experiences through trips, workshops and activities that have been created specifically for the needs of Essa Academy students. The programme gives a student a unique experience when they are applying for future courses, apprenticeships or careers. Best of all it is free to all Essa Students.

Denis Irwin - Manchester United Legend Foundation
Manchester United Foundation uses football to engage and inspire young people to build a better life for themselves and unite the communities in which they live. Dedicated staff deliver football coaching, educational programmes and personal development, providing young people with opportunities to change their lives for the better.
Working alongside the staff at Essa Academy, the Foundation delivers tailored mentoring interventions with the aim of helping individuals and select groups realise their potential both socially and academically. The partnership also allows students the opportunity to spend productive time away from the classroom to discuss any issues they may be experiencing. Structured football sessions are delivered each term to improve skill and performance with the aim of signposting participants onto clubs within the local community.
Essa Academy is proud to be one of a select few hub schools in the North West for the Manchester United Foundation.

Rewards
Every teacher has the right to teach and every student has the right to learn. Anything that gets in the way of this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Students who choose to disrupt learning will have consequences under the C system. This consequence system is designed to educate students that poor behaviour choices have very real consequences (as they do in real life). Detentions of up to one hour will be held on the same day, and C1s/C2s may be either after school or as a break and lunchtime detentions.
All students are expected to follow the Essa Standards
Behaviour for Learning
Students at Essa Academy are rewarded for demonstrating Effort, Standards, Spirit and Achievement (ESSA). Rewards are given by teachers using ClassCharts App during lessons. The reward points for each student are then displayed in form time every Monday morning. Students and form groups with the most reward points each half term will be awarded with prizes throughout the academic year, including certificates and badges. form parties and other rewards as determined by the Pastoral Team.

Behaviour and Attitudes
Consequences
At Essa Academy, we believe that students should be able to learn in a calm, safe and engaging environment. Teachers work hard to deliver interesting and exciting lessons and we expect that our students work equally hard in lessons. To be a success at Essa Academy (and in life) our students only need to do two simple things and they are: Work hard. Be nice.
We expect and demand the very highest standards of Behaviour for Learning during lessons and around the Academy. Essa is an Academy where students thrive and succeed. We are very proud of our students and our staff. As

At Essa Academy we have a strong EBacc offer. The EBacc is not a qualification in its own right – it’s a combination of GCSE subjects, including a language, that offer an important range of knowledge and skills to young people.
At Essa we are training our students for the real world and we strive to give our students the best possible life chances and career prospects. As a result we greet our students with ‘Good Morning’ and ‘Good Afternoon’ and ask that our students reply with the same, ideally with eye contact and a smile. We also take class registers with Good Morning or Good Afternoon and our students reply with the same.
