The FE USB is a young faculty which is already developing a reputation in the Czech Republic and in some other parts of the world for high level teaching and learning. The faculty was founded in 1960 as part of the College of Agriculture in Prague and from 2007 has stood alone as a fully established faculty in its own right. The school offers the opportunity to study in a cosmopolitan town but with the benefits of outstanding natural environments and national parks nearby. FE USB graduates are in great demand and our alumni can be found in senior positions, both in the Czech Republic and in other European countries. I am confident that your meeting with FE USB will be both enjoyable and challenging and will provide you with the knowledge and experience that will be beneficial in your future academic, personal and professional lives. We look forward to welcoming you here!

doc. Ing. Ladislav RolĂnek, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty

History and the present The Faculty of Economics is a relatively new faculty. It was established in 2007 and follows the tradition of economic university level education in České Budějovice, which has been developed there since the 1960’s. Since its establishment, the Faculty of Economics has achieved many successes. In the field of science and research, the Faculty is considered to be one of the top regional economic universities and its graduates are in very great demand on the labour market. The Faculty of Economics successfully develops activities leading to the deepening of the students’ competences by organising lectures and presentations of significant experts from professional practice. Active students are enabled to shadow managers or are offered internships in important companies. The Faculty of Economics runs its own shop, representing a practice environment for chosen students who are willing to develop their skills in the field of commerce and marketing. The Faculty of Economics also chooses a secondary school with whom to cooperate closely and bestows the title “Faculty of Economics Upper-Secondary School” upon it. The first uppersecondary faculty school is the Business Academy in Písek.

International Co-operation International co-operation is, at the Faculty of Economics, perceived as one of the key activities enabling further development of students’ competences, deepening the pedagogical and expert experience of the academic staff, and involvement in international scientific and research structures. The most active co-operation is established with Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia and the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. There are also close relationships with universities in Passau and Linz in the close border region with Germany and Austria. The Faculty of Economics co-operates also with the University of Missouri and Armstrong State University in the USA, the Université de Bretagne-Sud in France, the University of Primorska in Slovenia, and with the University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau in Germany.

Science and Research Scientific and research activities of the academic staff are oriented mainly on topics closely connected with economics, company management and socio-economic factors of regional development. The main focus is on applied research in which economic problems in practice are solved in co-operation with significant regional companies and institutions using modern economic and mathematical methods and models.

What to study? FE USB offers a variety of study programmes focused on the development of necessary knowledge and skills in different fields of business and public management. The majority of study programmes are taught in the Czech language but many subjects are available in English as well.

Undergraduate Study Programmes • Accounting and Financial Management (Czech language only) • Commerce and Entrepreneurship – specializations Trade, Tourism (Czech language only) • Management and Business Economics (Czech language only) • Financial and Insurance Mathematics (Czech language only) • Economic Informatics (Czech/English language) • Structural Policy of the EU for Public Administration (Czech language only)

Postgraduate (Master) Study Programme • Accounting and Financial Management (Czech language only) • Commerce and Entrepreneurship (Czech/English language) • Management and Business Economics (Czech language only) • Economic Informatics (Czech language only) • Structural Policy of the EU and Rural Development (Czech language only)

Doctoral (Ph.D.) Study Programme (Czech language only)

• Economics and management

Social Responsibility The Faculty of Economics is the first faculty in the Czech Republic which obtained the status of a fair trade faculty. It is important to spread ideas about fair trade and social responsibility, not only in various specialised courses provided by the Faculty, but also in the public field. It is fair trade which represents one way to educate the future generations towards effective consumer behaviour. We are aware of the environmental impacts of our behaviour and we are also responsible regarding our society and its surroundings. Having modernized and reconstructed the main faculty building, we save a significant amount of carbon dioxide yearly which would otherwise be released into the air. This amount represents, for example, the production of energy necessary for the heating space and water and electricity for 35 average households, or the yearly average car emissions of 282 people in the Region of South Bohemia.

Study programme:

ENGINEERING AND INFORMATICS Study field:

ECONOMIC INFORMATICS This undergraduate study field of the Economic Informatics provides students with knowledge of general economics, mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Basic knowledge is gained by deepening in courses of advanced usage of computer science methods from the viewpoint of statistics, enterprise, security of information systems, programming and decision making. Students can complement their study plan from the offer of facultative courses according to their own interests and priorities. The study plan structure comes from demands of practice. Emphasis is placed mainly on active forms of the study process, which lead to the development of practical skills of students in the field of modern methods of applied informatics. The graduates of this study field are IT experts with advanced knowledge and skills in the field of economics who can assert themselves in the sphere of economic application (banks, economic departments of local authorities, enterprise, central economic institutions, computer centers, research institutions). Graduates should be capable of advanced abstract thinking which is necessary for formulating and problem solving and they can continue with their studies in corresponding postgraduates studies at different economic schools or work in the economic, financial or informatics spheres.

The Region of South Bohemia South Bohemia is a dream paradise for holidays whether you decide to spend time sightseeing or relaxing. The countryside here offers endless possibilities for visiting places of natural beauty, but also has lots of historical monuments and great conditions for cycling and water sports. Include some charming historical cities into your programme, the most charming of which are Český Krumlov and the village of Holašovice; both places have been listed as UNESCO monuments! A great tip for romance is the neo-Gothic Hluboká Chateau. Fans of sports and active holidaying are catered for at the Lipno Reservoir.

The Town of České Budějovice The settlement of České Budějovice was founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Otakar II. on the confluence of the Vltava and Malše rivers. Thanks to the sovereign‘s favour and the town‘s advantageous location on long-distance merchant routes, the economy of the town quickly started to flourish. It soon became a centre of commerce and trade far and wide. The highest prosperity came in the 16th century, due especially to extensive silver production in the mines in the surroundings, as well as to the profit the town made from brewing beer, fish breeding in ponds and lakes and trade in salt. The continual development of the town economy was only interrupted by wars, plague epidemics, fires and political instability. The construction of the horse-drawn carriage railway, the first on the Continent of Europe, on the route České Budějovice - Linz, in the 19th century, was a major impetus to the development of commerce and industry. Important factories, which are still in operation, were founded at that time, for example the Hardtmuth factory and the world-renowned breweries, Budvar and Samson. In the course of its development, České Budějovice has grown into a real metropolis of South Bohemia, both in economy and culture.

EU Citizens – Citizens of EU member states need a passport or other ID document to enter the Czech Republic. The same is true for citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, who can freely move around the EEA (European Economic Area) NON EU Citizens – Visitors from other countries require a passport with at least six months’ validity on the day of arrival and in some cases a visa. A list of states whose citizens require a visa to enter the Czech Republic can be found at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. More information about visas can be found there. Schengen Zone – From 21/12/2007 the Czech Republic has been part of the so-called Schengen Zone. This group of countries has come together to enable people to cross their borders without passport controls. Despite this, however, a valid passport or other ID will still have to be carried out at all times.
