NOW AND THEN Im getting older, can you see it?

Renowned architect Jacques Herzog, in conversation with Julian Rose, highlights that modern architecture often adopts a minimalist approach influenced by artists like Donald Judd, emphasizing structure and materiality in design. However, few architects delve deeply into the exploration of materials that evolve and change their appearance over time, known as "materiality aged by time." Observations from the Lim Chong Building, a heritage landmark, reveal a prominent use of weathered materials such as rusted metals and bricks in varying hues, which have become defining elements that distinguish the building within the urban landscape. Despite its distinctive material patina and architectural presence, the building's narrative is marked by a lack of personal history, as the original owner no longer resides there. Instead, the space is now occupied primarily by expatriates and elderly tenants, who inhabit its austere and monolithic concrete environment.

Picture the corroded metal doors resting against the aged façade, their surfaces weathered and peeling, revealing the layers of time. Small plants sprout from cracks, a testament to nature reclaiming the structure as generations pass. The walls feature openings with perforated ventilation screens, allowing the breeze to flow through, gently whispering the untold stories embedded within the architecture. Slowly, memories and narratives unfold from the building, etched into its surfaces, waiting to be discovered.

CAPTURING MEMORIES A way to capture what is left that can be found in LCC building While the site itself lacks a strong sense of memory, fragments of its history can still be uncovered through conversations with the tenants. Elements discarded by the mechanic shops, abandoned badminton shuttlecocks scattered in the corners of the courtyard, and glass bottles reflecting the chaotic nightlife of the neighborhood represent some of the vivid recollections held by the residents. These memories can be encapsulated by exploring a range of materials, framing and solidifying them into a glass block form, preserving the ephemeral moments within the architectural composition.

PROJECT 2 Urban Strategy

TALENTS SCATTERED AROUND THE MAP: YET TO BE ‘ASSEMBLED’ Pudu, a district rich in industrial heritage, presents a unique opportunity for exploring adaptive reuse strategies that cater to both the functionality of mechanic workshops and the aesthetic needs of an urban environment. The land is covered with heritage buildings that have existed for over 100 years. During the early 1900s, the industrial era starts to rise in Malaysia bringing it all sorts of machinery and cars.

Kuala Lumpur, the city centre of Malaysia, has a high demand for cars but not much space is left for mechanic workshops. This gives Pudu, the neighbour of Kuala Lumpur an opportunity for a massive expansion in the mechanic workshop and hardware store. Until the late 1900s, over 39 mechanic workshops and 24 hardware stores had been scattered nearby the site within a kilometre radius.

Moreover, reimagining these spaces in Pudu could address broader community concerns, such as sustainability, walkability, and connectivity within a heritage district. By rethinking mechanic workshops, we can enhance local economic opportunities, promote environmental sustainability, and create a visually engaging, community-centred space that honours Pudu’s industrial past while supporting its urban future.

URBAN STRATEGY 01 Using modern skyrise building as a plain backdrop for heritage buildings Most of the heritage buildings can be found sitting next to the highway. As time flies, the white paint starts to oxidise and transform its colour into a beige colour. On the other hand, modern skyrise often uses white as the main colour for the building as well, which makes it a perfect backdrop to highlight out the heritage building if cars are driving pass the highway

BUILDING STRATEGY 01 Bringing the idea of using modern skyrise as a backdrop, A huge block of plainlooking building can be built in the centre of the site and could be used as a backdrop for both the LCC building and the foodcourt as both of them are a type of heritage building. This building can serve as a central hub.

URBAN STRATEGY 02 Giving life to the abandon heritage buildings Heritage buildings can be found perfectly sitting in front of the highway, but not much was used wisely as an eye-catcher. Many still have owners living upstairs but leaving the ground level abandoned. Seeing it in such a way is always a waste as these buildings are commonly wondered by everyone in the world. Stories can be found in every corner of the house, from the ground to the roof.

BUILDING STRATEGY 02 Using a double facade layer to highlight both internal and external views. From the external view, the double facade wall will have an opening in the area of heritage designs that need to be highlighted. Whilst from the internal view, people can see directly the landmarks of Kuala Lumpur such as the PNB 118 tower and the TRX Exchange Tower.

URBAN STRATEGY 03 Connecting the mechanic workshop and hardware store Mechanic workshops and hardware store has been existed in around the site since early 1900's. Hence as time flies, they are scattered all covered the area of Pudu, accessing these areas is a pain as customers are forced to drive a huge circle just to get to their destination within a few hundred meters of walking distance yet walking is also difficult with the heavy traffic.

BUILDING STRATEGY 03 Using sky bridges or ramps to connect the adaptive reused buildings and new buildings that will be constructed on the site.

Connecting all the mechanic workshops and hardware stores together with sky bridges. Allowing the owners, workers and customers to access different stores at different location easily and safely.

Billboard are one of those eyecatching items that can be seen commonly on the road, especially on the highway next to the site. Over 10 billboards can be spotted directly standing in the center of the Flyover.

THE CONVERGENCE Bridging Diverse Elements for Unified Outcomes Through the proposed building strategies, various design elements were harmoniously integrated to achieve a cohesive and striking building form.

The interplay of these components resulted in a unified architectural expression, where structure, function, and aesthetics converge to shape a distinctive outcome.

Strategy 1: White The use of white forms highlights the preserved facade of the historic building, emphasizing its role as a key element in the adaptive reuse strategy. This approach showcases the contrast between the old and new, allowing the original architecture to remain a prominent feature while integrating it into the contemporary design.

Strategy 2: Rusted Facade Walls The outer layer of the double facade is clad in rusted metal plating, giving the building a distinctive, weathered aesthetic that contrasts with its surroundings. This material choice not only enhances the building's visual identity but also reinforces its industrial character, making the site stand out as a unique architectural statement within its context..

Strategy 3: Dark tone skyrise The black rectangular volumes represent the skyrise elements, with the use of black ensuring they are visually noticeable on the site without overpowering the overall design. This subtle yet distinct color choice allows the skyrise to stand out in contrast to the surrounding structures, while maintaining a balanced presence that does not dominate the attention of visitors.

Strategy 4: Skybridges Wooden sticks are used to symbolize the skybridge, representing the connection between different building forms and unifying the site into a cohesive whole. This design element emphasizes the architectural narrative of integration, where the skybridge acts as both a functional and symbolic link, reinforcing the sense of unity across the site.

伍修 (WUXIU) derives from the combination of two Chinese words — 五金店 (hardware store) and 修车厂 (automotive service centre)

— reflecting the predominant character of the surrounding urban fabric. Within a 1km radius of the site, approximately 39 automotive service centres and 24 hardware stores can be identified, emphasizing the strong presence of small-scale industrial and repair-related trades in the area. The site itself currently accommodates four automotive workshops and two hardware stores, further reinforcing this contextual identity. The proposal reinterprets this existing urban typology by integrating both programmatic elements — hardware and automotive services — into a cohesive architectural framework. Beyond preserving the site’s industrial spirit, the project introduces educational facilities and exhibition galleries, serving as catalysts to attract a wider public audience. This hybrid program aims to revitalize the neighbourhood, fostering interaction between local trades, visitors, and learners while promoting adaptive reuse and sustainable urban regeneration within the district.

“Place where automotive and hardware store gathered’ The three buildings are assembled, creating a friendly environment for customers to be able to access everything they need from car maintenance to car modification. The LCC building is converted into a space for a hardware store providing everything that is needed from a nail towards machinery. The foodcourt is reused into an automotive workstation, including car fixing, car maintenance and car modification. The middle of both buildings acts as a central hub to connect both spaces with sky bridges and a ramp, allowing cars and pedestrians to access 3 buildings on different levels.

LIGHT AND SHADOW Spaces where lights works with shadow The building comprises two levels, each designed to evoke distinct spatial experiences through the interplay of light, materiality, and form. On the ground floor, a composition of varied solid wall geometries and patterned roof openings allows natural light to filter through, casting dynamic shadows and shapes that shift throughout the day, creating a range of atmospheres and emotional responses. The flooring is constructed with semi-transparent glass, softening direct sunlight and preventing excessive solar reflection. This material choice also permits filtered light to pass through to the lower level.

In the basement, semi-transparent glass is used predominantly for the walls, while subtle variations in floor levels are introduced to manipulate the quality and movement of light. This strategic use of translucency and depth ensures a contrast in ambiance between the two levels, where the ground floor offers a brighter, more uplifting environment, and the basement provides a more subdued, contemplative space. This duality accommodates different emotional needs, whether one seeks comfort in brightness or solitude in shadow.

KWONG TONG CEMETERY

Kwong Tong Cemetery (KTC), established in 1895, is the oldest and largest Chinese cemetery in Kuala Lumpur, spanning 263 acres. It serves as a historical landmark, reflecting the rich heritage of the Chinese community in Malaysia. It has witnessed over 130 years of history, spanning from colonial times to Malaysia’s independence and modern metropolitan development.

1920 The cemetery expanded to 263 acres with 48 more acres granted, adding Wu Feng Bridge, Wu Long Bridge, and 12 pavilions.

PROJECT 2 Urban Strategy

THE HIDDEN PATH BETWEEN GRAVES Creating a natural shaded pathway Over the decades, Kwang Tong cemetery has been building and establishing a few landmarks to attract people. Cars can be driven around the cemetery without and problem, but pedestrians were different.

The urban strategy is to create a pathway focusing on connecting all the landmarks around Kwang Tong cemetery with maximum usage of natural shade. The diagram on the right highlights the shaded area of a tree in white colour, while the sunny areas are shaded in a greyish colour. Indicating how a pathway can be built along the Kwang Tong cemetery to lead human activities from the site to the rest of the landmarks

URBAN INTERVENTION NATURAL ELEMENTS

The diagram above shows the strategic location for tree and pathway intervention. Trees are scattered around the Kwang Tong Cemetery, specifically the large trees, being a perfect key element to be used as an urban intervention. A pathway built along the shadows of the trees can lead to a stop for human activities and rest. Platforms, staircases, and slides can be built hanging above the tree to create a spacious place for human interaction and for kids to linger around. Sky bridges connect the platform to the pathway, giving a safe route for pedestrians to cross without any interaction with the cars.

Instead of solid concrete floors, metal meshes are used as a pathway urban intervention to reduce the effect of decreasing the area for the grass to grow. Huge wall areas have been built along the hill to create a shaded area pathway, where the walls can also be used as a columbarium urn shelves.

BUILDING FORM Step 1: The building’s form originates from the sunlit zones identified and hatched in the site plan. These areas guided the initial spatial configuration, which was then developed into a hill-inspired massing to harmonize with the natural terrain. As part of the design exploration, small granite stones were strategically scattered across the hatched zones to test their visual and spatial integration with the landscape, enhancing the building’s connection to its environment through materiality and texture.

Step 2: By combining both experimental models from the initial design phase, select larger granite stones from the scattered composition were retained to represent the primary built structures, serving as the main functional spaces of the building. Meanwhile, portions of the organic, hill-like form were reinterpreted as circulation elements, forming pathways and corridors that weave through and connect the granite-like volumes. This integration of form and material establishes a cohesive spatial narrative, where movement and program are seamlessly linked within a landscape-inspired composition.

Step 3: The corridors were reshaped into smoother, organic forms to better integrate with the natural landscape. In certain areas, the circulation spaces are expanded to accommodate functional or livable spaces, allowing them to serve as rooms or gathering areas.

The larger granite stones were refined into more defined cubic forms, referencing the architectural language of the Kwang Tong Cemetery. This design strategy ensures that the building not only harmonizes with its surroundings but also pays subtle homage to the local cultural and historical context.

Step 4: The cubic structures are intentionally simplified to maintain a subtle presence and avoid drawing attention away from the main building. In contrast, the primary building is articulated into a more defined and functional form through the addition of rooms and multiple floors, accommodating the necessary programmatic spaces while enhancing its architectural clarity and purpose.
