TheO+MShedshavebeensittingonthefloating harbourin Bristolsincethe1800s,inrecentyearsthebuildings havebeen leftabandoned.Asaresultnaturehascreptintothe cracks andhasbeguntomake ahomeintherundown building.

Thedesignisacommunityfocusedopenworkspace,thatplays onthehistoricalpresenceofthesitethatwasoncetheheartof athrivingworkingcommunity.Re-purposingandregeneratingthe buildingintoahubthatpromotesconnectionandcollaboration afterthepandemicwhilstalsolettingpeopleconnectwithhistory andnatureinoneplace.

Using biophilic principles toblendnatureandurbanenvironments togethercreates a healthy, welcomingandcomfortablespacethat people wouldchoosetospendtimein-anescapefrom cramped home environments and stilted grey offices of thepast.

LETTINGNATUREINTOOURENVIRONMENTISBENEFICIALTOHEALTHANDWELL-BEING

Researchhasdeterminedtheintroductionof livingvegetation,lightandairto urbanspacesisbeneficialforhealth and well-being,canimproveconcentration,creativity, performance andsocialinteraction. Thereisavarietyof plantingthroughout thedesignto createanoasisofgreen inanurbancityenvironment. Thetreesandplantshave beenresearchedandchosenfor theirinterest; colour,textures,smellandtheywillchangethroughouttheyeardependingonthespecies.Allvegetationchosen isabletogrowintheBristolclimateandhasbeengivenenough spacetothrive. Theplantlistisnotdefinitive.Thedesignis aliveandwillcontinuetoevolve,itwillneedcareandattention;allowingthecommunitytheopportunitytotakeownershipwill createa closerbondwiththespaceandeachother.

Eachboxdividingtheprotectedandunprotectedspacesiscladwithwoodormetal.Split byaglasswall,theunprotectedmaterialswillageatfasterratethantheirprotected counterparts.Eachsurfacewilldevelopaninterestingpatinaandallowtheoccupantstosee theageingofmaterialsthroughtheseasons.

ThediagramtotheleftshowsthePROTECTED[inside]andUNPROTECTED[outside]areas inthedesign. Theyaresplitbyglazedinternalwallsandtheboxeswhichspanbothareas.

Workingwiththeuniquequalitiesofthebuildingandopeningupsectionsoftheinterior spaceallowsoccupantsaccesstonaturallight,viewsandairflowthroughoutthebuilding. Thisisachievedinthreeparts:

Bycreating2outdoorareas,theGardenandCourtyard,andallowinginteraction betweeninsideandoutsideviawindowsintheboxesthatcanbeopened.

Bynotdividingtheinteriorspacewithhardboundariesbutinsteadusingthelineof site,elevationandfurnituretodesignatedifferentzones.

Bycreatingspacesinthebuilding withmetalmeshthatcreatesafreeholdbetween spaceswhilstallowingairflowandlighttopassthrough.

TheFloating AuditoriumwasinfluencedbytheformofMajestyPalm(RaveneaRivularis) whichcancreatelargestrongplanesofcoverwithoutblockinglightandair.Thestepsofthe auditoriummimicthebladeoftheMajestyPalm,offsetandoverlappingcreatingalarge solidsurfacefromaboveandaseriesofthinfinswhenseenfromtheground.

ASUCCESSFULENVIRONMENTISBUILTAROUNDFLEXIBILITY

InspiredbytheshippingcratesthatwouldhavefilledtheO+MShedsintheirheyday, boxesfillthespacecreatingadivisionbetweentheprotectedandunprotectedareas. However,theabilitytoopenthewindowsalongtheunprotectedsidescreatesan interactionwiththetwoareasandallowslightandairflow.

Thevarioussizedboxescreatespaciousandintimateareasforusersandarepurposed fordifferentuses:housingworkenvironments,meetingspaces,toilets,staircasesandan elevator.

Eachboxhasabacklitdrapedclothtodiffusethelightanddampensoundinthespace.

AtF3Architects,aspartoftheresidentialteam,Iworkedona projecttodesigntheinteriorofavillawhichwasmid-waythrough constructionontheIslandofCorfu.

Theclientwantedtheinteriorstotakeinspirationfromthe surroundingareaandformaterialstobesourcedlocally.

Thevillawouldbecomeahighendholidayresidence,witha mediterraneaninfluence,whilststillfeelingliketheirhome.

Wewantedtogiveeachroomit’sownidentitywhilstalsobeing cohesivetotheoverallschemeofthevilla.Weachievedthisby playingwiththetexturesandcoloursinthefinishesandchoosing individualhighendfurnitureforeachroomwhichfolloweda mediterraneanlookandfeel.

OnmyfirstdaywithAISIwastakentoasitevisitat91Waterloo Road,CapitalTower.SeveralmonthslaterIwasgiventhe opportunitytopitchadesigntoNordcloudwhohadchosenthe 3rd floor(5165sqft)ofCapitalTowertobetheirnewLondonoffice.

Nordcloudarealeadingcloudservicesandtrainingcompanywith ayounggrowingteamandneedtocreateaspaceoftheirown afterthepandemicwiththeaimofbringingemployeesback together.

Theclientdidnothaveaclearbrandidentity,leavingmewiththe opportunitytocreateaspacethatfocusesmoreonthe psychologicalaspectsofofficedesignwithouthavingtooverly relyonbrandguidelinesandmessaging.

Ithereforedecidedtocreateanofficethatwelcomedandcalmed thosethatenter.Itisarefugefromthebusysurroundingsof London.Aspacewhereideascanflowandbesharedbetweena growingteamrecoveringfromtherecentpandemicinanuncertain climate.

EXPLORINGTHESITE

OverlookingWaterlooStation,CapitalTowerwaschosentobelocationfor Nordcloud’snew office.Capital Towerwas nearly50 yearsold andwas showing obvious signs of ageing and despite the updates the building had gone through, thelimitations ofthe buildingwas makingthis sitea challengeto workwith. The 3rd floorhadremainedemptysincethepandemic.

The3rd floorhasalmostpanoramicviewsoftheWaterlooareathroughits relativelylarge windowssurrounding theperimeter, onlyinterrupted bythe core andlarge supportcolumns. Eachwindow hada wallmounted radiatorand aset ofpulldownblindsbothofwhichwouldhavetoremainduetobudgeting.

Atsomepointthespacehadashallowraisedaccessfloorinstalledthat necessitatedrampstoassessthecore.TheSitealsohadawaffleslabcling coveredby anincredibly agedmechanical systemcovered byan oldsuspended ceilingwithfancoreunitsintegratedintotheceilingtiles.

TocreateanenvironmentthatbuildsandpromotedasenseofCalm,Focus andWarmth.ItookinspirationfromScandinavianandMinimalistdesign trendsandincorporateditwiththestyleofdesignsmycollegeswere workingontoensurethespacewouldworknotjustvisuallyand psychologicallybutalsopracticallyandtoabudget.

PaleOakandSoft Whitejoinerypiecesset onaneutralbackground created destinationsthroughoutthespace,withcomplementaryupholstered furnituremaking awelcoming andrelaxing environmentfor work,discussion andcollaboration.

Tocreateaspacethatfeltairyandlargerthanitwas,IchosetouseaLight GreyCarpetTileandWhiteStoneLVTontheFloor.Theseparationofthese materialscreatedaclearalmostsubconsciousdistinctionbetweenspaces. ThiswasreinforcedwiththeuseofamuchDarkerCarpetintheenclosed spacestocreateasmallerspacewithafeelingofprivacy.

LoosePlantingfloodedthroughoutthespacebreaksuphardsurfaces creatingasoft,clean,flowingoffice.Withtheaddedbenefitofbiophiliathe wholespacegainedasenseoflifeandtranquillity.

COMMERCIALOFFICE

Alston&BirdareanAmericanlawfirmwhomovedintothe4th floor ofLND:W-NOBLESTREET,EC2(9800sqft)in2023.

Iwasbroughtontotheprojectinthedesignstageafterthethelead designerhadwontheproject.Designelementswerelaidoutbut werestillevolvingdaily.Iwastaskedtotakeafewofthesedesign elementsandpushthemforward,themostimportantbeingthe ReceptionDeskandFeatureWall.

TheReceptionwouldbethefirstthingyouseewhenenteringthe office,meaningitwasespeciallyimportantthatthespacebea reflectionofthecompanyandcreateansenseofease.

Manyelementswerechangedbeforewedrewplanstobesentto thejoiners.Toembedtheclientintothedesign,Iusedaformof parametricdesigntoplotthelocationsofAlston&Bird’sofficesand usedthelongitudetodeterminewherethemetalfinsend.
