HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

Queen Victoria laid the founding stone of Royal Albert Hall in 1967 as a tribute to her late husband, who had died in 1961. Prince Albert, in 1951, after the successful exhibition, suggested that they should keep the work going by creating a permanent center for art and culture.

His idea was practically applied by the Exhibition’s Royal Commission, which bought Gore House to dedicate it to continuous cultural and art festivities.

But Gore House was not quite the right choice.

Later, a memorial was proposed and approved by the Royal family, and the Royal Albert Hall was built. Originally, the Hall was built to exhibit art and science, but the acoustics of the Hall were so functional that it has welcomed musicians from all over the world ever since.

Over the years, the hall has been a significant venue for cultural, political, and educational activities. Historical figures like Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein have shared their words of wisdom at Royal Albert Hall.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN The Hall is a Grade I listed building whose architectural design is a work of inspiration, influenced by Roman amphitheaters, and is circular, which was a novel idea at that time and helped improve the acoustics.

It was the work of Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Scott, who designed the building with a mosaic frieze, which illustrates the triumph of arts and science. The exterior design of the building is embellished by Terracoat facades.

The design is repetitive in some parts and unique in others, representing royal monograms, national emblems, heraldic symbols, and crests of people related to the building.

The grand organ, which was the biggest instrument at the time of its installment, is not just an instrument but also one of the wonders of the hall’s architect. The great glass and iron dome is an outstanding feat of engineering that makes the hall one of its own kind.
