Carta del presidente President´s letter
La revista de Zahara de los Atunes comenzó su andadura cuando empezaron a cerrar muchas otras publicaciones. Cuando los tiempos de bonanza económica y de burbujas varias comenzaron a verse amenazados. En ese momento tan complicado, un grupo de empresarios, vecinos y profesionales de la comunicación decidimos unirnos y soñar un proyecto común que nos permitiera dar a conocer nuestros tesoros y compartir el privilegio que supone ser –o sentirse- zahareño. Y el resultado es este nuevo número, que pretende mostrarles lo que tenemos: olas de color verde esperanza, un mirador privilegiado al Estrecho, nuestra arena dorada, la intimidad de las calles de un pueblo en invierno y los manjares del paraíso. Gracias al esfuerzo y al compromiso de los anunciantes y de Julián Romero, secretario de ACOZA, que, sin su trabajo incondicional, sería imposible abordar un proyecto como el que ahora tiene en sus manos. Así pues, les propongo un paseo a caballo por estas páginas, y como homenaje a La Pepa en este año del bicentenario, desde Zahara queremos unirnos a su artículo 13:

The Zahara magazine took its first steps while others faltered. When the time of boom and bubbles ended many felt under threat. At this difficult time a group of businessmen, neighbours and media professionals decided to unite and produce information about this treasured corner of Spain and what it is to be or a least feel Zahareño (native) The result now in its 6th edition, illustrating our privileged position on the edge of Europe with golden sands and intimate streets of a village still unspoilt. Thanks to the efforts and commitment of advertisers and Julián Romero, secretary of ACOZA with his unconditional work. It would be impossible to deal a project like the one you hold in your hands. I suggest a wander through the pages and as a tribute to the constitution article 13 in this bicentennial.

Si yo fuera un pájaro, haría mi nido en Zahara, bien resguardado del Levante. Quizás lo pondría en la torre de la muralla, para poder ver a los vecinos y los turistas comiendo atún y helados en las terrazas que abundan en las aceras. O tal vez en la ladera del monte donde están las mansiones, para desde allí ver el búnker y el faro de Camarinal. También vería desde allí, si mi nido estuviera bien alto, el monte de la Breña y el faro de Trafalgar, convertido en falsa isla desde mi atalaya.
Si fuera una golondrina llegaría en marzo, con las primeras flores, para que mis crías nacieran aquí. Para enseñarles a volar sobre las azoteas llenas de ropa tendida. Y para que se hicieran amigas de los espurgabueyes, que juegan con las vacas en la playa. Las llevaría a bañarse al Cachón, y les explicaría qué son las nutrias, y por qué tienen que guardarse de ellas. Si fuera cigüeña, blanca o negra, iría a Africa tan a menudo como pudiera, para tener el placer de regresar a casa.

Tendría cuidado con los molinos, ese ejército desgarbado que crece año tras año y que custodia -cual batallón de gigantes- el pueblito y sus playas. Siendo pájaro de Zahara también podría ser un ave marina, un cormorán o un águila pescadora al acecho junto al laberinto de redes de la almadraba. Pero ya ven, soy un simple mortal que quisiera, en mi próxima vida, ser pájaro en Zahara. n

If I were a bird, I would make my nest in Zahara, well sheltered from the Levante. Perhaps it would be in the tower of the ruined palace wall,from where I could see the residents and tourists eating tuna and ice cream on the terraces that abound on the sidewalks. Or maybe the hillside where the mansions sit, and from there see the bunker and the Camarinal lighthouse. If my nest were higher I would see the hill
of la Bre単a and the Trafalgar lighthouse, a false island from my vantage point. If I were a sparrow I would arrive in arch, with the first owers, so my chicks were born here. I would teach them to y over the rooftops full of laundry, they would become friends of the egrets playing with the cows on the beach. I would take them to bathe in the river Cachon and would explain about otters, and why they have to beware of them.

If I were a stork I would go to Africa as often as I could, to have the pleasure of returning home. I would be careful with the windmills, the lanky army that grows year after year, as if protecting Zahara from a battalion of giants.
As a bird in Zahara I could also be a sea bird like a cormorant or an osprey lurking above the maze of tuna nets. But you see I am a mere mortal who in my next life would like to be a bird in Zahara.n

No se puede atrapar el viento. Es libre. Viaja a su antojo. No se puede detener, no se puede ver, siempre está allí. Nuestro Levante, nuestro Poniente, forman parte del paisaje modelando las olas del mar, las crines de un caballo, el dibujo de la arena en la playa, las hojas de los árboles o el movimiento de la nubes en el horizonte. Aunque no podemos verlo, sabemos que está. Aunque no podamos tocarlo, se cuela cada mañana por los rincones. El viento es un sentimiento, no podemos controlarlo, no sabemos qué hacer
con él. Podemos disfrutarlo, sentirlo, jugar, dejarlo pasar, ignorarlo. Estas imágenes, de Carlos Yebra, retratan los juegos de un caballo de la yeguada de Guirola en la playa. Trafalgar y La Breña al fondo. Fuerza e intensidad. El sentimiento de libertad que se experimenta en Zahara en invierno, junto a ese elemento invisible que forma parte del paisaje de todos los corazones zaharahuis y zahareños. You can not catch the wind. It is free. Goes where it pleases. You can not stop it, you can not see it, it’s always there. Our Levante (offshore), our Poniente (onshore), is part of the landscape, shaping the ocean waves, the mane of a horse, the drawing on the sand, the leaves of the trees or the movement of the clouds on the horizon. Although we can not see it, we know this. Although we can not touch it, it goes round every corner. The wind is a feeling we can not control, we do not know what to do with

it. We enjoy it, feel it, play in it, let it go, ignore it. These images by Carlos Yebra, portray the games of a Guirola stud horse on the beach. Trafalgar lighthouse and La Brena wood in the background. Strength and intensity. The feeling of freedom that is experienced in Zahara in winter, next to that invisible element which is an indivisible part of the landscape and the hearts of zahareĂąos and zaharahuis. Con mesas llenas de amigos todo el día. Me gustaría que vinieran a desayunar. Les prepararía un fantástico desayuno con chacinas ibéricas y zumos de frutas.

También me gustaría que vinieran aquí a la hora de la sobremesa. A tomar café, copa y puro, si hace falta. Les haría cocktails con colores y mucha imaginación.
Y al caer la noche les pondría música. Y unos gin-tonics fantásticos. Y abriría una botella de buen vino para prolongar la conversación. Les diría que se quedaran a dormir en La Hospedería, que estamos en el pueblo y junto a la playa. Pero este no es mi jardín. Es el de ustedes, que lo hacen posible día a día.n

CARNAVAL LIBERTARIO
Carnaval es misterio, risa, cánticos, desenfreno. Es cuando todo vale. Cuando podemos encarnar nuestras fantasías, escondernos del mundo o mostrarnos tal como somos arna al es acanal, es a dionisíaca, el preludio de la primavera. Y en Cádiz, el carnaval es crítica de lo establecido, libertad creadora en donde no existen los tabúes. A diferencia de otros carnavales donde se exhiben lujo y riqueza, como ocurre en las calles de Venecia, en las escuelas de Samba brasile as o en los des les de las islas anarias, para pas rnoslo ien en
los carnavales de Zahara sólo necesitamos las ganas. Pasear por las calles del pueblo se convierte en una aventura constante. Mujeres ue son om res se cruzan con un an inflas de men ira, mien ras todos huyen de una peña taurina con toro incluido. Colores, estribillos, sátiras, sátiros, pasacalles, ruido. Todo vale y nada está prohibido. Un gaditano me dijo una vez: “los de Cádiz no somos liberales, sino libertarios”. Y ése es precisamente el espíritu del carnaval en esta tierra. n

Carnival is mystery, laughter, singing, debauchery. It is when anything goes. When we embody our fantasies, hide from or show the world who we are. Carnival is a Bacchanal, Dionysian party, the prelude to spring. In Cadiz the carnival is critical of the establishment, a creative freedom where there are no taboos. Unlike other carnivals which display luxury and wealth, as in the streets of Venice, in the Brazilian Samba school parades or in the Canary Islands,
to enjoy ourselves in the carnival of Zahara we just need the will. Walking through the streets of the town becomes a constant adventure. Women are men,a fake Cantin as is eeing from a group of bullfighters, bull included. Colors, slogans, skits, satyrs, street noise. Anything goes and nothing is forbidden. A local once told me: “those of Cadiz are not liberal, but libertarian.� And that is precisely the spirit of carnival in this land.n

RADIOGRAFÍAS DEL ALMA Carlos Yebra empezó haciendo fotografías para perseguir un sueño: captar en el mundo real los colores que desde pequeño veía cuando cerraba los ojos. Y para ello tocó casi todos los registros: retratos, paisajes, publicidad, aventura… Cada nueva faceta fue enriqueciéndolo como persona y como profesional. ALLÍ ESTABAN LOS COLORES QUE SIEMPRE QUISO PLASMAR, Y QUE ERAN UNA MEZCLA DE TÉCNICA Y AZAR Un día, por accidente, mientras buscaba en su archivo de diapositivas antiguas, un líquido corrosivo de los muchos que había junto a las ampliadoras, se derram so re algunas de a uellas im genes impresas en fotolitos. Cuando las colgó para que se secaran, su corazón cambió de ritmo. No podía creerlo: allí estaban los colores que siempre quiso plasmar, y que eran una mezcla –como él mismo- de técnica y azar. ¡Eureka! Habían nacido las Water Slides.

Fue entonces cuando comenzó una nueva etapa de investigación creativa en la que sigue inmerso hasta el día de hoy. Una continua y sorprendente sucesión de transparencias y tiempos, de tocar las cosas con los dedos. “Mis radiografías del alma”, como él las llama, “aparecieron en el momento de eclosión del mundo digital. Para mí suponen, ante todo, la necesidad de volver a lo analógico. A los materiales físicos, a los olores de laboratorio y a mis principios en el mundo de la fotografía. Es curioso, cuando estoy trabajando con este soporte, a veces me siento transportado a mis primeros años, cuando ponerme a trabajar era mi forma de aprehender el mundo.”n

In agricultural areas, the fiestas are in late summer to celebrate the harvest. In coastal areas in mid-July, when they pay homage to the Virgin sailor, that is Carmen.This festival is close to the pagan religion, the connection between man and the elements. In Barbate, on the 16th of July, the Virgin waits at the port market for sunset. Watching over her, the boats, large and small, festooned with colorful ags and docked around the edge of the pier. As the evening progresses, people begin to board the boats. A multicolored cacophony fills the air, motorboats, sailboats, yachts and other sea going vessels. hen the Virgin s statue finally boards, the ship is waiting and sounds Salve Marinera, the sun takes on a different vibration. The Vir-
gin, sober with the colors of toffee, concentrate the religious intensity of a fishing village. The fishermen pray to her whenever they leave port and bring her owers when they return. The boat then carries her just outside the port, so that she can look for a moment at the infinite horizon of the sea. The other accompanying boats in an a uatic procession, with songs and owers to e press devotion, to the guardian of the sea. To thank her, and ask her protection against the great ocean. The port, for a few hours, becomes a chaotic multi-colored serpentine of vessels not really knowing if they come or go. As the waves. As the tides. As the foam. As the sea.n

RESTAURACIÓN DE LA IGLESIA DE ZAHARA
Siempre me gustó la iglesia de Zahara. Por sobria, por desnuda, por poco pretenciosa. Me gusta su interior fresco de planta simple, su bóveda de cañón y su limpia combinación de cal y ladrillo visto. Cuando era pequeña, y en las vacaciones mi madre me traía a esta iglesia, solíamos sentarnos en los primeros bancos. Entonces, bajito, me decía: “¿Ves esa Virgen? Pues estaba muy viejita y mi amiga Ángela y yo la hemos arreglado un poco.” Cuando vuelvo al pueblo
y paso por delante, me acuerdo del susurro de mi madre en un lejano domingo de agosto que olía a incienso y nardos. Y veo la iglesia que ahora está viejita, como lo estuvo aquella talla que restauraron dos amigas que vinieron de vacaciones. Hoy su puerta está cerrada y me dicen que la están restaurando. Que al ca o de los siglos las paredes rezuman la sal ue el edi co contuvo en tiempos del Duque. Y me lo dicen bajito, y el levante me empieza a oler a incienso y nardos...n

RECONSTRUCTING THE CHURCH
I always liked the church in Zahara, bare, sober and unpretentious. I like its interior, cool and simple, with the lime washed, vaulted barrel ceiling and exposed brick. When I was young and visited in the holidays my mother would take me there. We would sit on the front benches and she would whisper “See the virgin ? She used to be very aged and my friend Angela and I fi ed her up a bit. When I return to the village and pass the church, I remem-
ber my mother’s words on a Sunday long ago that smelled of incense and nardos a local ower . I now see the church aged like the statue of the virgin restored by two friends on their holidays. Today the doors are closed and I’m told that it too is being restored. After hundreds of years the walls silently exude salt which was housed there during the Dukes’ time and the Levante wind starts to smell of incense and nardos once more.n
