I would also like to thank all of you who contribute financially so that this annual event can be as successful as it is Finally, a big “Thank You” to the Board of Directors who dedicate countless hours to our club. They work hard all year long to keep our Basque Club alive. And thanks again to our Bush committee as they give countless hours of hard work and sweat to maintain and improve our landscaping, clubhouse and picnic grounds. We appreciate all of you who have traveled from far and near to support our local Basque community. We hope everyone returns home safely with great memories from our festival so we can celebrate together again next year. Aupa Bakersfield! Louis Iturriria

AIZKOLARI wood chopping exhibition This year the Kern County Basque Club has asked the Aizkolari or wood chopper, Stephanie P. Brana to come and perform at our 37th Annual Basque Festival in Bakersfield. Stephanie has been wood chopping since the age of thirteen. Her father introduced her to the sport. She remembers as a little girl traveling to different Basque festivals in the western states watching her father do exhibitions or compete. When Stephanie became a teenager, her father asked her if she was interested in trying out the sport. From that time on, she has continued to chop at every Basque festival she’s been invited to. Her first appearance was in Reno, Nevada. Also, Stephanie has done exhibitions in California and Oregon, as well as other parts of Nevada. Stephanie competes at the college level too! She has competed in Moscow, Idaho, Missoula, Montana and San Luis Obispo, California winning several events such as the horizontal hard and speed chop, vertical hard and speed chop, and the chain saw event. At the end of spring, she will be competing in the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Series to qualify as a Stihl series competitor. We hope you join us at 6:30 p.m. to watch Stephanie’s wood chopping exhibition.

She is amazing!!

Mugaz Gaindi 08 “ “Basques in the West”

Bakersfield was proud to host the fifth International Seminar which was held on October 22-24, 2008, at California State University Bakersfield (CSUB). The theme of this year’s conference was “Basques in the West” and included presentations by over a dozen scholars from universities in both the United States and the Basque Country. Argitxu Camus, one of the conference organizers, shares the conferences three-fold objective: L “First, it presents a venue for specialists on the subject to gather in order to communicate the current state of investigations, create constructive debate, and draw future academic paths. Scholars from the Basque Country, and from southern and northern America will share important findings with their audience in Bakersfield. L This gathering at the same time reflects an important mission undertaken by several institutions of higher education spread around the world: the creation of an international consortium of Basque studies. Representatives from California State University Bakersfield, Boise State University, California State University Santa Barbara, University of Nevada Reno and the University of the Basque Country will discuss this very important project at the conference.

33

L Finally, it is our wish to present an educative event for Basques and non-Basques alike. As Basque Americans are further removed from the immigrant generation, it is important to promote awareness of Basque history and culture. By sponsoring the event, the North American Basque Organization, Inc. and the Kern County Basque Club demonstrated the interest of the larger Basque community for such an endeavor. A dinner/dance for the scholars in conjuction of the Gure Amensta Handball Court’s 39th Anniversary was held at the Basque Club that week.

Marilou Onaindia accompanied by Joxe Mallea (University of Nevada Reno) sighted her first tree carving at CSUB.

In Loving Memory of

Aita Martxel Tillous 1934-2009

63

Martxel Tillous was born in 1934 in the Basque town of Eskiula in Xiberoa. Following his calling he entered the priesthood and began work as a missionary for 26 years in Africa . Returning to Europe he served four years as the Basque chaplain for the Basque community of Paris from where he came to the United States to serve as chaplain of Basque-Americans since 1994, until he could no longer continue because of the onset of cancer. It turned out that Aita Martxel was the last in a line of earlier Basque chaplains. His ministry as chaplain to the Basques of the United States had him criss-crossing the country averaging 60,000 miles a year! He usually spent 200 nights a year sleeping in his van—with the license plate “Pottoka”—as he traveled from his base in San Francisco, California to the scattered Basque communities of eleven states of the American West. All of this to serve the spiritual needs of Basque-Americans—from celebrating mass in the Basque language to baptizing, marrying Basque couples and consoling us at funerals. In 2002 our chaplain from Zuberoa was recognized by NABO with its “Bizi Emankorra” or Lifetime Contribution award, for both his spiritual and cultural contributions. An avid txistulari, Aita Martxel was often seen and heard playing this ancient Basque flute (or its variation the xirula). He served as the txistu instructor at NABOs annual Udaleku-Music Camp (Basque Cultural Summer Camp) for youth for most all his years with us. After a Basque picnic meal he was always there to join in a singalong or to help encourage the formation of new Basque cultural venture. He also started a newsletter (“Lokarria”) that goes out to thousands of Basque-American families and thus further assisting efforts to bring our community closer together. NABO and the Kern County Basque Club salute Aita Martxel’s selfless dedication to his tasks and we consider ourselves fortunate to have been blessed with his presence among us. Esker mila Aita Martxel - you will always be in our hearts - Goian Bego!

In Loving Memory of

Virginia Lee Errea July 24, 1924 - June 15, 2008

Virginia was born in Long Beach, California to Oliver Sprague and Grace Stubblefield Sprague but resided in Bakersfield since the age of one. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lois Dennison and her brother William (Bill) Sprague. Virginia attended local schools, quitting K.C.U.H.S. before graduating to play ladies professional baseball for Sam Lynn. On July 11, 1942 she married Gracian Errea. She is survived by her husband, Gracian; her daughter, Judy Errea Bass; son-in-law, Steve Bass; and the greatest joys of her life, grandsons, Greg and Brian Bass; and by Greg’s wife, Laura. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara; sisters-in law, Mary Errea, Helen Meske, Vera Errea; many nieces and nephews and her great-grand-dogs, Sheila and Dixie. When she wasn’t bragging about or doting on her grandchildren, Virginia loved animals, music, dancing, taking cruises and dining at Noriega’s. Virginia passed away after a lengthy illness and, at her request, had no services.

65

In Loving Memory of

Henri Pierre Duhart September 3, 1943 - July 28, 2008

Henri Pierre Duhart was born on September 3, 1943, in the village of Macaye, France. He spent his childhood on his family’s beloved farm, Iriartia. Throughout his life, he enjoyed telling his children stories of rural life and describing Makea’s cattle as the most “beautiful” cows in the world. In 1968, following his service in the French army, he joined his two brothers, Arnaud and Jeannot, in the United States. Settling in La Puente, California, he worked as a baker. In 1971, Henri met Bernadette Arduain at the Sheepmen’s Picnic in Bakersfield. Henri soon moved to Bakersfield where Bernadette was living and the two were married in 1973. After a brief stint working at the Pyrenees Bakery, Henri, like many Basque immigrants of his generation, started his own gardening business. Henri took immense pride in his Basque heritage and played an instrumental role in the re-founding of the Kern County Basque Club. He was an avid handball player and worked tirelessly for the construction of the handball court at the Clubhouse. Along with his brother-in-law Bernard Arduain, Henri created the Bakersfield Klika. Henri looked on with pleasure as his children became active in the club, with his daughter Stephanie teaching traditional dance to children and sons, Philippe and Eric, both following in their father’s footsteps as Klika “chief”. Henri was known as a goodhumored man who loved to tell jokes in Basque, French, Spanish and English, though he was famous for repeating punch lines multiple times in all four languages. He loved his family, his community, the Dodgers, and lunch at Benji’s French Basque restaurant.

In Loving Memory of

Enrique Guillermo Novaliches (Aitxitxe) 1935-2008

Enrique went to join the Lord, his wife Carmen of over 45 years, his parents and his two sisters, Maria and Anne after a brief illness. He was born in Morga, Vizcaia Spain, to Victoriano and Escolastica. He came to the United States in 1961 to Wyoming as a sheepherder and eventually settled in Fresno where he worked in the mines and eventually worked 25 years and retired from the French Basque Bakery. Enrique is survived by his daughters, Mentxu Novaliches and her husband, Felix of Gernika, Spain and Goretti Torres and her husband, Jose Mari of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Goretti and Olatz of Gernika, Spain and Mikel and Aritz of Bakersfield. He is also survived by his brother, Victoriano and wife, Irene; sister, Valen and husband, Jose Mari and sister, Eli and husband, I単aki and his sister, Sister Sor Ines (Monja Salesa) and many nieces and nephews. Enrique took loving care of his wife for many years before her death and they are now together. He was a member of the Fresno Basque Club and the Bakersfield Basque Club. His grandchildren were his life and joy. He loved to fish and play mus and spend time talking with old friends.

In Loving Memory of

Fermin Campos Sr. January 26, 1930 - October 3, 2008

Fermin Campos was born on January 26, 1930 to Faustino and Estefania Campos, and was the eldest of nine siblings. His place of birth was Olondriz, in the Province of Navarra, Spain. He joined his brothers Esteban and Antonio when he arrived in California in 1955 to herd sheep. In 1957, the three brothers started their own sheep business on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. In 1960, they started farming in the RiverdaleCaruthers area. After working hard and saving his money, he married Veronica Iribarren on May 1, 1965, and in 1967 they were blessed with a son, Fermin Michael Campos. He was especially proud of his family which included his daughter-in-law LeAnn, and his two grandchildren, Julia Marie and Fermin Leoncio Campos. They, in turn, loved their “Papa” and all of the tales he told them of growing up in Spain so many years ago. He enjoyed his travels with his family, especially the trip to his hometown where he showed Julia and Fermin the places of his childhood. “Papa” was also an avid creek trout fisherman, knowing pretty much all of the best fishing ponds from Shaver Lake to Lee Vining. When he couldn’t go trekking into the high country for the fish anymore, he settled for visiting his home in Shaver Lake on weekends and relaxing with his family and friends. He was well known in the agricultural community, as he and his two brothers Esteban (Steve) and Tony began their partnership known as Campos Bros. They worked with sheep, crops of alfalfa, cotton, black-eye beans and planted a small vineyard. Steve died in an accident in 1960. After planting almond trees in the late 70’s, Fermin and Tony build their first almond huller in 1980. The company grew to include the production, processing and sales of quality almonds around the world. The brothers were also proud to be part of several raisin growers that started the Caruthers Raisin Packing Company. Fermin was sustained by his faith, was a hard worker, a lover of life, and a joker and a tease to his family and many friends the world over. He was proud to be an American citizen, but was also proud of his heritage. He loved playing “mus”, a Basque card game, through his membership in various Basque Clubs; and he was especially proud to have been an active member of the Fresno Basque Club since its inception in 1978. He passed peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2008, at home with the love of his family present with him.

Daniel would say, “Hi!” with a firm hand shake. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed one. Unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. the angels took him home. Daniel was loved and will be sorely missed by his extended family and hundreds of friends.

In Loving Memory of

Henry Allen Luther November 23, 1923 – February 7, 2009

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in the chapel at Greenlawn Cemetery, 10:30 am at 3700 River Blvd. Henry is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Marion Luther; his brother, Albert Luther; and his wife, Florence Luther, who died November 14, 2006. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Thomas Grabbert of Rhode Island; brother and sister-in-law, George and Edith Luther of Bakersfield; son, David Luther of Bakersfield; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and Stephen Van Schaack and numerous nieces and nephews. Henry was born in Cranston, Rhode Island. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 on December 26, 1942 where he served in five major campaigns: Sicily, Italy, Salerno, Anzio and Southern France. It was his job as a crewman on the No. 1 boat of the first wave to take the small boat through the mine infested waters with a load of soldiers/marines and put them on to the beaches. After the service he returned home and married his wife of sixty years, Florence Eleanor Adams in Anthony, Rhode Island. They had two children David and Dale. In September of 1952 they packed up the family and dog in a 1946 Ford, pulling a one wheel trailer, and moved to Bakersfield where they met many long time friends. He retired in 1986 from Bakersfield Ready Mix as a cement truck driver. In his earlier years he enjoyed riding horses with the Rough Riders, fishing, traveling in their RV and wood crafts. He was a member of the VFW and an honorary member of the Kern County Basque Club. Henry and his son David were actively involved in the Teamster’s Retiree Club. He was a regular at his favorite restaurants: Woolgrowers, Noriega and Lie-n-Den where he enjoyed the friendships as well as the food.

THANK YOU TO THE BUSH COMMITTEE!!! Thumbs up for the Bush Committee!!! As you sit in the park today, enjoying your lunch and admiring the lush green grass and trees, we hope you will stop and think about the Bush Committee who has worked so hard to provide you with this beautiful atmosphere for the day. The committee is made up of five Directors – Miguel Arraztoa, Victor Barreneche, Jean Pierre Daramy, Antonio Elizalde and Jesus Onaindia as well as two very dedicated members – Esteban Goni and Jose Maya. These men are responsible for keeping the KCBC grounds clean and beautiful! They plant the flowers, trees and perennial rye grass. They trim the bushes, and repair the park sprinklers. Occasionally they do major cleanups of the grounds. The work is endless! In addition to taking care of the grounds, the Bush committee also built a fence around the picnic tables and enlarged the gate between the handball court and cooking area. As you can see, many of their weekends are spent working out at the club. We owe these men a big “THANK YOU” for all of their hard work and dedication to the Kern County Basque Club. MILESKER!!!

The Bush Committee shows off their green thumbs! Pictured from L to R – Jean Pierre Daramy, Jesus Onaindia, Miguel Arraztoa, Antonio Elizalde and Victor Barreneche. Not pictured – Esteban Goni and Jose Maya.
