Barbara Comstock

A Devoted and Helpful Life: Barbara Comstock Morse

Barbara Comstock Morse was born in Palermo, California on November 20, 1891 She and her four siblings spent their formative years in Sacramento. She dropped out of high school after ninth grade and went on to work in Libbys Cannery, a candy store, and a bakery, among other places. In 1918, she wed Archie Morse, and the couple went on to have five children. Barbara was a key figure in the construction of the new, two-room Carroll Elementary School, which replaced the older, one-room school. In her role as Clerk of the Board of Trustees, she oversaw personnel matters, facility upkeep, and communication with the County Superintendent of Schools.

Barbara's priorities after her husband's death in 1932 were the farm and the children. Despite leaving her position as a school trustee, she has never wavered in her dedication to education and has always been an enthusiastic cheerleader for her own children and grandchildren. Barbara was a primary educator for her family, setting an example of dedication to the ideals of hard labor, education, community service, citizenship, and moral conduct that continues to this day

Housing

The table on page 05 demonstrates a consistent increase in rental housing prices in the area over the past decade, with larger homes experiencing a more rapid rise in rental costs. When visiting the community, it was evident that the majority of residences were newly constructed or built within the last 30 years. The community's diversity is apparent, as evidenced by the variety of businesses and housing developments. There were no indications of race covenants influencing this area, which further supports the notion that the community's diverse development is a result of its growth taking place after the era of Redlining.

Marital Status

Marital Status as a Growth Indicator

The prevalence of married residents and two-parent homes in the area is noteworthy, as it suggests a community with potential for family growth and a family-oriented atmosphere. This is further supported by the numerous parks and recreational spaces designed for children and families. The well-planned community, with ample room for development, is likely to continue attracting families. Although housing prices in the area are rising, they have not increased as dramatically as in some parts of Sacramento County, where housing has become unaffordable for many young families. This makes the area more accessible and appealing to family-oriented residents.
