Sample Lesson: Grade 1, Topic 4

TOPIC 4

Number Pairs That Make 10 Fact Fluency Objective: Demonstrate fluency with addend pairs that make 10; demonstrate fluency with subtraction from 10.

Students decompose 10 into two groups in kindergarten. These centers build on that work as students connect it with addition equations (e.g., 10 = 4 + 6) and with related subtraction facts. These centers provide repeated practice for students to decompose 10, represent the decomposition with equations, and begin to commit the facts to memory.

Center Progression Center

Description Students model addend pairs with ten-frames to visualize the parts and whole in addition facts. Students use mental math strategies to think about the missing part of 10 when given a number and model their thinking with a rekenrek. Students apply prior knowledge of addend pairs that make 10 to solve related subtraction math facts.

Fill the Frame Materials: Decahedra Dice (1 per pair)

Students take turns modeling numbers with counters on a ten-frame. Students discuss how many more make 10, color a model, and write the equation.

Fill the Frame Recording Sheet

Say: Today, you will work together to find the missing part of 10 using counters and a ten-frame. Partner A, roll for a number. Both partners, build it on your ten-frame. Discuss how many more counters you need to make 10.

Double Ten- Frame Mats

Ask: What number does your ten-frame show? (7) How many more counters do you need to make 10? (3) How do you know? (I need 3 more to fill the ten-frame.)

(p. 43; 1 per student)

(p. 32; 1 per student)

Two-Color Counters

(10 per student)

Crayons

Say: Color the ten-frame on your recording sheet. Use one color for the number you picked. Use another color for the number needed to make 10. Say the math fact to each other and write it on your paper. Partners switch roles and repeat.

(2 colors per student)

How does the ten-frame help you know how many more are needed to make 10?

Back to the Hive Materials: Back to the Hive Game Boards (1 per pair)

Students play a pathway game. They roll a number cube and move their marker that number of spaces. The student says the number they land on and tells how many more would be needed to make 10. The other player checks with a rekenrek. Say: Today, you will play a game to practice making equations that equal 10. You are a bee heading to your hive. Place your counters on START. Partner A, roll the number cube and move that many spaces. Look at the number on your space and tell your partner how many are needed to make 10.

Number Cubes (1 per pair)

Rekenreks

(1 per pair)

Transparent Counters

Ask: What number did you land on? (4) How many more to get to 10? (6)

(1 per student)

Say: Partner B, use the rekenrek to check if 4 + 6 = 10. Take turns until one of you reaches the hive. What patterns do you notice in the number pairs that make 10?

Hopping Frogs Materials: Frog Counters (10 per pair)

Cups

(1 per pair)

Paper and Pencils

One partner hides some frogs. The other partner uses what they know about number pairs that make 10 to find how many are missing. Say: Partners, place 10 frog counters on the table. Some of the frogs will hop away. Partner B, turn around while Partner A hides some of the frogs in the cup. Partner A, tell your partner when you are done. Ask: Partner B, how many frogs started on the table? (10) How many are showing now? (3) How many frogs hopped away? (7) How do you know? (I know 3 and 7 make 10.) Say: Partner A, show the frogs in the cup. Count them to check. Tell your partner what subtraction fact you could use to find the missing number (e.g., 10 – 3 = 7). Partners say and write the subtraction math fact, then switch roles and continue. How can knowing 6 + 4 = 10 help you solve 10 − 6?

Dim the lights and tell students to shine a flashlight on the mark. • Say: When the flashlight, or sun, is shining directly on a location, it is daylight.

• Ask: What happens to the mark as the globe spins away from its starting position? What do you think this represents? It moves into darkness. I think it might be showing the sun going away, or a sunset. • Ask: Is it day or night when the mark is in the dark? night • Ask: What happens to the mark as the globe spins back to its starting position? What do you think this represents? It moves back into the light. I think it might be showing the sun coming back, or a sunrise. Instruct students to watch the mark as the globe spins. Prompt students to record their observations on the printable as the globe spins. • Ask: What pattern do you observe if you keep spinning the globe? The mark moves through a pattern of light then dark and then back into the light and then into the dark again.

• Ask: What does this pattern represent? This pattern shows day and night. • Say: The cycle of day and night for Earth takes about 24 hours. That is the length of one day on Earth.

Real-World Connection Have students describe any sunsets or sunrises they might have seen. Ask them to describe how the sky looked and how the sky changed before and after.

Closing the Lesson • Ask: How does the sky look different during daytime than it does at nighttime? • Say: In the next lesson, we will explore other patterns in the sky by observing stars.

Lesson Wrap-up

Differentiation

Vocabulary Check with students to see if they would like to add words they encountered in this lesson to the Vocabulary Word Wall. Examples may include sun’s position, Earth, stars, moon, daylight, and shadow.

Approaching: Hold up a sun and moon cutout to help students recognize when it is day and night.

Formative Assessment What objects do you observe in the sky during daytime? The sun is in the sky during daytime.

hand2mind.com

Exceeding: Give students another location on the globe (or have them choose one) to discuss when it is day and night. EL Support: Have students make labels with the words day and night. Have them place the labels on the halves of the globe in each position as they say the words aloud.

Objective

Objective

Materials AngLegs®

Compose 2D shapes to make new shapes.

Activity

2.

Use 3 yellow AngLegs to make a triangle. Ask: What shape is this?

2.

3.

Using 2 yellow AngLegs and 2 dark green AngLegs, make a rectangle. Ask: What shape is this?

Place the rectangles on the grid paper and count unit squares to check the results.

3.

Build 4 rectangles and estimate the area of each.

4.

Connect the triangle above the rectangle by snapping them together. Ask: Did you make a new shape? What real-world object does it look like? (a house)

4.

Place the rectangles on grid paper and count unit squares to check estimates, recording the dimensions and area of each.

5.

Repeat the activity using different rectangles, discussing patterns in dimensions and area.
