What is all of this?

As a BCTC student you have the opportunity to participate in a number of University of Kentucky Education Abroad (UK EA) programs. This catalog contains a sample of some of the programs that are suited for you.

BCTCblue+ is a dual enrollment partnership between Bluegrass Community and Technical College and the University of Kentucky. The program is designed for BCTC students who intend to complete an Associate in Arts or Science degree (AA or AS) and then transfer to UK. Students enrolled in this program are eligible to take up to 12 credit hours (or four courses) of pre-major and major coursework at UK while pursuing an AA or AS degree at BCTC. BCTCblue+ students pay the BCTC tuition rate for the allotted 12 credit hours of UK courses.

Eligibility • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at BCTC • Enrolled in an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree program • Plan to transfer to UK • Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at BCTC • Must have at least 15 earned and in-progress credit hours to be eligible to take your first course at UK through the BCTCblue+ program

Apply for a Program

1. Go to uky.edu/educationabroad 2. Click ‘Program Search’ in the navigation bar on the left 3. Search for the program of interest by typing in a key word from the program title in the ‘Program Name’ field 4. Click on the program you are interested in 5. Click ‘Apply Now’ at the bottom of the page to apply for the program

uky.edu/international/financial_aid ISP599 is a pass/fail course that keeps you classified as full-time and thus allows you to utilize federal financial aid and most institutional aid for your EA program. You are charged tuition at the standard BCTC tuition rate for one credit hour.

Additionally, this required course serves to provide you with the necessary information, preparation, and support to successfully navigate the Education Abroad process.

Generally your existing financial aid and scholarships can apply to your EA program.

Since each form of financial aid and scholarships are different you should consult with your financial aid counselor to see if your program would be covered.

In addition to using existing scholarships and finacial aid, you may also recieve financial support via education abroad scholarships.

Experience Types What is An Experience Type?

“Exerience Types” are a way that UK Education Abroad categorizes its programs. These different titles categorize what you will actually be doing while you are abroad.

Study Abroad

• Enroll in academic coursework at a foreign institution for traditional classroom-based experience • Academic credit will be earned via the host institution or via UK

Research Abroad

• Conduct research with faculty at foreign institutions or independent research in the field in an international setting • Academic credit will be earned via the host institution or via UK • Research credit is typically awarded through a student’s academic department

Intern Abroad

• Gain work experience in a professional setting through international internships • Academic credit will be earned via the host institution or via UK • Internship credit may be awarded either through a student’s academic department or the UK Stuckert Career Center (Click here to learn more about the Career Center)

Service Abroad

• Engage with the host community by participating in international service-learning projects • Academic credit will be earned via the host institution or via UK

Teach Abroad

• Complete student teaching for professional certification at an international elementary, middle or secondary school • Academic credit will be earned via the host institution or via UK Note: Non-education majors with an interest in teaching may be able to volunteer or intern abroad in an educational setting

Program Types What is A Program Type?

“Program Types” are another way that UK Education Abroad categorizes its programs. These categories help identify what the structure of your program will be like.

Less independent More structured

UK SPONSORED PROGRAMS • Directed by UK faculty • Earn UK credit/grades • Peers are other UK students • Mostly short-term winter or summer programs (some courses can be embedded into regular courses (ex-travel component over spring break)

UK PARTNER PROGRAMS • Programs arranged by third party organization • Earn transfer credit • Variety of academic offerings • Excursions and on-site services included in program fee • Programs in all academic terms (fall/spring/summer/winter)

UK DIRECT PROGRAMS • Attend a foreign institution and pay their normal rate of tuition • Earn transfer credit • Highly independent experience • Peers are international students and host country students • Programs in all academic terms

UK CONSORTIA PROGRAMS • Directed by faculty from the region • Earn transfer credit • Peers are other students from the region • Variety of academic offerings • Mostly summer/winter programs

UK EXCHANGE PROGRAMS • Attend a foreign institution but pay regular rate of UK tuition/fees • Earn transfer credit • Highly independent experience • Peers are international students and host country students • Take courses in English or host language • Semester programs (fall/spring/year)

July 25-August 18, 2016 Highlights • Apply principles of chemical, biological and physical systems to address natural resource and environmental issues

• Demonstrate the safe and proper use of major conservation field techniques in tropical ecosystems • Visit a variety of ecosystems including cloud forests, wet and dry tropical forests, Pacific Coast forests, Elfin forest and Riparian forest as well as a mangrove swamps and an active volcano • Research and report on a specific aspect of Costa Rica such as cloud forests, ecotourism, corridor systems, sea turtles, etc

Academics • NRE 320: Natural Resource and Environmental Analysis (3 credit hours) or alternate credit may be arranged by the faculty directors or the NRES Academic Coordinator, Ms. Geri Philpott Housing and Meals • Students will share rooms in hotels or lodges • Breakfast provided each day • All meals provided while in Tortuguero, La Selva and Monteverde • Welcome and farewell meal
