Itwas thefirstdayoffilmingfor Dark Fortunes,a Peregrine Pictures feature film Andthe firsttime tea shopowner Theodosiahadeverseenafull-fledgedmovieinthemaking Ofcourse,shewasnâtactually in themovie Butthisweekwas still extra special for Theodosia and Drayton Conneley, her dapper, sixty-something tea sommelier. Theyâd been tapped to handlethecraftservicestable,anall-daymunchfestforthecastandcrew.Itwasprovingtobeafunbreakfromtheirnormal rolesashostsattheIndigoTeaShoponCharlestonâsfamedChurchStreet,wheretheyspenttheirdaysjugglingmorningcream tea,lunch,teaparties,afternoontea,specialevents,andcatering.
Catering. Yes, thatâs exactly why Theodosia and Drayton had loaded their craft services table with a bounty of tea sandwiches,lemonscones,browniebites,bananamuffins,cranberryteabread,andhandmadechocolatefudge Andofcourse tea,whichwasDraytonâsspecialty.
âThisisexciting,yes?âTheodosiawhisperedtoDrayton.Thedirectorhadcalledasuddenhalttofilmingandnowthe crewmilledaboutthedarkenedsetlikeshadowsflittingthroughagraveyard
âExcitingbutstrange,âDraytonsaid,touchingahandtohisbow tie âIhadnoideasomuchworkwentintofilminga singlescene.âHepeeredthroughthedarknesstowherethedirectorwaswhisperingtoacameraman.âAndthatdirectorseems tobeinaconstantuproar.â

âBrilliant,âLewinUshertrilled Hewasoneofthefilmâsinvestorsandanexecutiveproducer,aheftybutslick-looking hedgefundmanagerinathree-pieceZegnasuitwithaRolexthesizeofanalarmclock.Heseemedpositivelygiddytobeon settoday.

âLights down, everyone quietâŠand roll film,â Morro instructed. He stood there, tense, arms crossed, watching his actors

âNo,no!â Morroshouted.âThatâs notgoingtowork,youâre doingitall wrong.Everybody,take five while we figure this outâ He sighed deeplyand gazed inthe directionofTheodosiaâs craftservices table as ifthere were ananswer to be foundthere.
Turnsouttherewas.
âLoose-leaftea,âTheodosiasaid âYouneedtobrewloosetealeavesinordertoachievetheeffectyouwantâ âHuh?âThedirectorpeeredatTheodosiaasifreallyseeingherforthefirsttime.âYouknowsomethingabouttea?â
âSheshould,âDraytonsaid,suddenlyspeakingup.âSheownsateashop.â
âComeoverhere,willyou?âMorrosaid,wagglinghisfingers
Theodosia slippedaroundthe table andwalkedtowardthe director,aware thatmore thana few eyes were following her. She stepped over a tangle of wires and blackcables that connected lights, cameras, and sound equipment to the main powersource.
âSoyouâreateaexpert?âMorroasked Theodosialiftedashoulder.âOfsorts.â
âBecauseyouownateashop.â
âTheIndigoTeaShopoveronChurchStreetâ
Thedirectorseemedtorelax.âTruthbetold,Iâvebeenknowntoimbibeacuportwoofteamyself.YoumightsayEarl Greywasmygatewaydrug.â
âBecauseofthebergamot,âTheodosiasaid
JoshMorroreachedout,gentlygrabbedTheodosiaâsarm,andpulledhertowardhim.âRight.â âHardtoresistthatrichflavor.â

âWhat!âscreechedthefortuneteller,whosuddenlysawherbigscenegoingupinsmoke.
âOh no,â Theodosia said, breaking away from him and holding up her hands. âIâm no expert when it comes to tasseographyâ
âYouârereferringto â âReadingtealeaves.â
Morrogazedatherandsmiled.âOhyes,Ithinkyouâreperfect.Idefinitelywant you toreadthetealeavesandbeinthe sceneâ
âIcanâtdothat,âTheodosiasaid.
Morroâsbrowspuckered.âWhatâstheproblem?â
âIâmnotanactress,âTheodosiasaid Sheglancedaroundquickly,lookingforconfirmation Wasnâtitglaringlyapparent thatshewas onlyheretooverseethecraftservices table?Wasnâtit?Comeon,somebodypleasepitchinandgiveher some backup.
ButJoshMorrohadalreadymadeuphismind HelookedovertowhereAndreaBlair,thestarofthemovie,wasnow lounging in a folding chair as she scrolled through her phone messages. Her script lay on the floor next to her, unopened. âYouârenoactress?âMorrosaid.âNeitherisshe.âThenheliftedahand,snappedhisfingers,andcalledout,âSondra,weâre goingtoneedhair,makeup,andwardrobeforâŠwhatâsyourname?â
âTheodosia TheodosiaBrowning ButIreallycanât â âDoit,âDraytonurgedfromacrosstheroom.âItâllbefun.â
âNo,itwonât,âTheodosiasaid,shakingherhead.âIâmnotanactress,Idonâtevenlooklikeanactress.â

âCharlestonisfullofghosts,âTheodosiasaidplayfully âWeâvegothauntedhouses,hauntedhotels,ahaunteddungeon, andevenahauntedcemetery.Actually,twohauntedcemeteries.â
Tinagaveanappreciativeshiver.âThisplace,BrittlebankManor,istheresomekindoflegendbehindit?â
âIdonâtknowallofit,âTheodosiasaid âButapparentlyawomanwaskeptlockedintheatticandthengotkilledwhen anenormousboltoflightningstruckthebuilding.â
âWhyonearthwas she locked inthe attic?â Brittanyasked as she helped Theodosia into a longpurple velvet coat emblazonedwithsilverstars.
âNotsure,âTheodosiasaidasTinasituatedaturbanonherheadandgaveafinaltouchtotheswirlofhairthatpeeked out.âIneverdidhearthewholestory.â
Back on set, DraytonhadbrewedasmallpotofDarjeelingwhilelightsandcameraangleswerebeingadjusted And whenTheodosiaemergedfromthemakeuproom,HeleneDeveroux,oneofthemembersoftheCharlestonFilmBoard,rushed uptogreether.
âBlessmetobits,Theodosia,Ihardlyrecognizedyou!âHelenecried.âYouâreallglammeduplikeabonafideactress!â
âItwasnâtmyidea,âTheodosiaexplained,pattingnervouslyatherturban âButthedirectorwantsmeinthemovie You know,foramoreauthentictealeavesreadâ
âCanyoudothat?âHeleneasked.Shewasforty-somethingandatadtheatricalwithhermopofhoney-blondhair,zaftig figure,andoverlybroadgestures.TodayHeleneworearedsilkjacketovertightblackleatherjeans.
âIfIfollowthedirectorâslead,thensureIcan,âTheodosiasaid âImean,Iguesssoâ
HelenegrabbedTheodosiaâsarmandgaveaconspiratorial wink.âArenâtyougladDelainesetyouupwiththisgig?â DelaineDishwasafriendofTheodosiaâsandservedontheCharlestonFilmBoardalongwithHelene.
âIâllletyouknowonceweshootthissceneâ
Helene grinned. âLater, sweetie, right now I have to bounce.â She shook a handful of papers. âGotta deliver these paperstotheCityFilmOffice.âAndshewasgone.
âAreyouready?âthedirectorasked HewassuddenlyinTheodosiaâsface,lookingalittleanxious âHopeso,âshesaid
Theodosia andAndrea dida couple ofquickrehearsals together,withTheodosia feelingmore confidentas theywent along.
âThis is working,â JoshMorrosaid âVerybelievable Ithinkweâre readyfor a take Now,Andrea,whenTheodosia tipsyourteacupsidewaysandstaresintoreadthetealeaves,Iwantyoutolookapprehensive.Doyouknowwhatthatis?Can yougivemeapprehensive?â

âAndsomebodygetmeachair,âMorrosaid.Therewasaflurryofactivitybehindhimassomebodysetdownametal foldingchair Morro plopped down, crossed his legs, and said, âQuietonset Lights all the waydownâ There was sudden silenceasthelightsdimmedandeveryoneheldtheirbreath.âAndIwantaaaction. â
Atwhichpointthelightscameupslowly,revealingTheodosiaandAndreahuddledattheteatable.Theodosiapicked uptheteapot,pouredteaintoafloralteacup,andwaitedasAndreatookacoupleofsips Thenshereachedoverandtookthe
teacupback As Theodosia leanedforwardtopeer atthe tea leaves,she was aware ofthe camera movinginclose andofa strange,almostelectrical,feel inthe room.There was a weirdrumble,thena profoundlyloudSIZZLE,CRACK,POP,as if someone had suddenlythrownthe master switchinDr. Frankensteinâs laboratory. The noise continued to build as electrical flasheslituptheroomlikeastringofexplodingBlackCatfirecrackersandTheodosiasmelledawhiffofphosphorus Toadd tothemayhem,ahorriblegaggingsoundrangout,thenslowlymorphedintoastrangledscream.
This isnât in the script,Theodosiatoldherselfasascreeching,wailingwallofsoundroseuparoundherfromthecast and crew At which point she jumped to her feet and saw Josh Morro thrashing wildly on the floor Heâd flipped over backwardinhismetalfoldingchairandwaswrithinginagony.Hiseyeshadpoppedopensowidethewhiteswereenormous, likeacoupleofboiledeggs.AndforsomebizarrereasonMorroâsbodyseemedalmostweldedtohischairashisarmsflailed crazily, poundingouta drumbeatagainstthe saggingwoodenfloor, caughtinthe throes ofwhathad to be a terrible seizure Secondslater,hisbackarchedspasmodicallyandhislegskickedandjerked,asifdancingtosomeunholytune.
âSomebodyhelphim!âAndreacried,settingoffanevenloudercacophonyofscreamsandshouts.
TherewasaterriblegurglingsoundaswhitefoamspewedfromJoshMorroâsopenmouth.Then,inonefinalconvulsive act,MorroâsheadsnappedbackandbangedagainstthefloorwithadeafeningCRACK Thenhiscrumpledbodyseemedtorun outofsteamasheletoutaslowexpulsionofairthatsoundedlikeavampireâsdyinghiss.
âWonât somebody helphim?âAndreascreamedastearsstreameddownherface.
Who said the girl canât act?!wasthesinglethoughtthatflittedthroughTheodosiaâsbrain
Unfortunately,halfthecrewseemedtobestruckdumbastheygazedinhorroratMorroâsbodywhileothersturnedaway orburiedtheirfaceintheirhands.
The lights had come up full force now, revealinga barelytwitchingJoshMorro lyingonthe floor amidsta tangle of blackcables.
Willy, the cameraman, kneltdownand reached outa hand to touchMorroâs shoulder justas someone shouted, âStop! Donâtdothat!â
Hisarmfrozeninmidair,WillyglanceduptofindTedJuniper,thelightingdirector,wavingathim âDonâttouchhim,âJuniperwarned.âHemaystillbehot.â
âHot?Whatareyoutalkingabout?âWillyshouted.Hewaswild-eyedandrumpled,afifty-somethingguyinkhakisand agreenmilitarysweater
âJustlook,âJunipercried.âLookathischair!â
WillyturnedhisgazeonthetwistedmetalchairthatMorroseemedtobeweldedto.âJeepers,âhesaid,hisvoiceraw withemotion âThereâs wires â
Theodosia creptaround the tea table to have a lookfor herself. Draytoncame up behind her, shakenbutcurious. The lightingdirectorwasright.TherewasatangleofblackandcopperwireswrappedaroundMorroâsmetalfoldingchair.
âSweetFannyAdams,âDraytoncried âIthinkthepoorfellowâsbeenelectrocutedâ
âThatcanâtbe,âJunipersaid Despaircoloredhisvoiceandhewaspracticallyintears
âSomebodycall911,âavoicecalledout.âDoesanybodyhavetheirphonehandy?â
Atleastfifteensetsofnimblefingershurriedlycalled911. Whichbrought
TwouniformedofficersfromtheCharlestonPoliceDepartment,anambulancewithtwoEMTs,andthefiredepartmentâs rescuesquad.
The EMTs arrivedfirstandwenttoworkimmediately Withbarelya wastedmotion,theydroppedtotheir hands and knees,pullingequipmentfromtheirmedicalpacks.
âPriorityone,âthefirstEMT,aserious-lookingBlackwoman,saidtothesecondEMT.Hernametagread L. SINGER,his read T ELMORE
Theodosiafiguredpriorityonehadtobecodeforabigbademergency
BothEMTsworkedfeverishlyonMorro,followingtheABCprotocolofcheckingairway,breathing,andcirculation.
âIâvegotafaintpulse,âElmoresaid.âButitâsâŠâHeshookhishead. Singerduginhermedpackandpulledoutasyringeandasmallbottle âEpinephrine,âshesaidasshecarefullyfilled herneedle,thenplungeditdirectlyintoMorroâsheart.
Still,itdidnâtlookgood.Eventhoughtheyworkedfranticallyforanotherfiveminutes,JoshMorrowasnâtrespondingto anythingtheEMTsweredoingandhislipswerestartingtoturnblue
