A Review Of Scams That Students Face

Scholarship Scams

Many students get calls from strangers saying that they have won a scholarship.

They are asked to provide bank account information to receive the scholarship amount.

Student Loan Relief Scam

In such cases of fraud, scammers attract victims using false promises to pay down student loan debt and lower monthly payments.

However, the criminals divert payments to their own account.

Some students did not realize for years that their loans weren’t being repaid.

Public WiFi Scams

Using public wifi in schools and colleges can make students susceptible to scams.

Hackers exploit the security flaws on a public wifi router and scan the data that passes back and forth between the router and the individuals’s computer.

Social Media Scams

Scammers create fake pages of universities and attract students.

Students provide emails and other details to criminals and it results in an inbox full of spam or even identity theft.

Credit Card Scams

College students are particularly vulnerable to credit card scams.

This range from legitimate credit card with unfavourable terms to credit card solicitation that is an attempt at identity fraud.
