CONCERT HALL & BALLET SCHOOL

2019 Thesis Bachelor Degree Project USFQ-CADI HONORABLE

MENTION

The Quito concert hall is a building that proposes to be incorporated with the current bullring to co-form a new point of cultural development in the capital.

The building is made up of three programs: a concert hall and a chamber hall, a ballet school and a multipurpose exhibition hall. Once the program has been established, the idea of the project is born from the site due to the high cultural and social relevance it possesses given the history of the bullring. However, the idea of the site is not only born from the existing elements but also from the spirit that the place possesses.

The place has the possibility of being a finishing point at the spatial and architectural object level with the relationship

it has with La Tortuga park. From this arises the question that guides the project in the first instance: How to finish off a project that brings with it a long green snake and that also already has an element with a circular shape and an exorbitant size?

The answer is to achieve a dialogue between an existing element and a new one that interact in size and have continuity, but it must be respected that the project does not become an extension. The composition of the element is made up of three main pieces joined by a plinth that serves as a rug to join these three elements. As in Sydney, San Sebastian and Athens, the plinth is an element of union and extension.

Under it is a space shared with the outside that is related and allows you to be inside and outside at the same time.

The chamber hall is the one that responds directly to the bullring, while the Main Auditorium serves as the face of the building and the bar (Ballet School) serves as the back of the project as it is opposed to the development of the Parque de la Tortuga.

These diagrams are the key to understand the project at a formal and architectural level beyond the conceptual, however, these are only the guides that will lead the project to a much more technical and architectural development.

Mass

The project shows a volumetry based on 3 elements that faces the great mass that the bullring represents. The 3 elements are: Chambers Room, Main Auditorium, and Ballet Room. The volumetry is incorporated and tries to link through the void and the new shape of the bullring.

Movement

Unit - Set

As a second element, the plinth plays an important role, being this the one that unites the project as one, giving the elements the opportunity to pose on them and to be embedded in it. Auditoriums are embedded with one side free while the bar rests.

Hierarchy

The hierarchical element is appreciated by size. This is located as a face towards the avenue and is the main element at

Inside is the largest auditorium with a capacity between 1200-1300 people incorporated with dressing rooms and rooms.

extension of the zocalo, which manages to generate a series of spaces that connect with the exterior and with the interior. In the same way, the plinth has an internal game of heights, wide spaces in the foyer.

The play of volumes is projected from the center of the square: The chamber room is aligned center to center; From this point the main auditorium is born with a 12° towards the square; Finally, the Ballet Hall previous elements.

The structure of the building works from a quadrangular mesh that orders the project; however, the auditoriums and the main building have a structure independent of the grid and a larger scale.

VIENTRE VENTER

2024 Casas Project Expo UIO-ECU

BUILT PROJECT

Team members: Santiago Martinez
Miguel Rueda

Venter, it’s the starting point, proposing a new direction of thought for present and future generations, from a multi-disciplinary and trans-scalar approach. Where the development of architecture arises from the issues of the contemporary world, acting on different levels and in harmony with various agents: plants, insects, atmospheres, sounds, and humans.

This is the last space of the exhibition and the smallest, but the only one intentionally dedicated to the rest of the species with which we coexist. It’s a “Non-Human Centered” space where the ecosystem becomes the main design element and not a complement, as is commonly used. Here, the arrangement of elements serves the natural world, and humans become spectators.

Venter, in Latin “Vientre” (belly), refers to the creation of the ideal space for the development of micro-ecosystems. It’s an artifact that floats above various species and allows for the care and growth of the new inhabitants of this space. It incorporates various technological objects to achieve optimal conditions for these new ecosystems. Venter emulates the skin of Mother Earth with an organic topography that abstracts the presence of the Ilalo Volcano. Its intention is to shelter the native species of an ecosystem that has been desertified due to the excessive real estate activity developed in recent years in that area. It’s a composition of layers that isolate this small world from the outside and protect nature.

2020 SITE MIRADOR

The lookout pavilion is a place of contemplation.

It’s not about height or size, it’s about feelings and connections. The idea is to give the observer the opportunity to find a connection with the infinite view of the sea. With that in mind, the project generates a pavilion for the reception of the observer and to give the site a place of tranquility and transcendence. Followed by a wall that guides the visual needs, the place acquires again: The ruins and the sea. As such, the pavilion is designed with a 4:9 ratio that emulates the largest temple ever created: The Pathenon.
