In the highly-regulated field of medical products, your understanding of regulations, guidelines and standards are in high demand. A Legacy of Care and Discovery

For over 60 years, the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation has distinguished itself as a model for excellence and inspiration in nursing and interprofessional practice, education and research.

In 1957, Arizona State University launched the School of Nursing with 58 students enrolled. Today, the Edson College provides a first-class education for over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students annually, with an alumni base of over 14,000 graduates. What started with one nursing program has now grown to offer a variety of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs.

The Edson Gift

A $25 million gift from the Edson family in 2019 set the college on a course to continue its leadership and research capabilities in the areas of cognitive development, dementia and family caregiving. The gift also provided scholarship funds to help students pursue a dual PhD/DNP degree that will prepare them as nurse scientists who have both practice and research expertise. Additionally, funding became available for postdoctoral students in dementia research and family caregiving..

Center for Advancing Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research

The Center for Advancing Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research (CAIPER) mission focuses on reimagining team-ness through collaboration, innovation and activation in healthcare and beyond to achieve a humanistic, socially-aware and team-based healthcare workforce. By engaging diverse groups and pioneering forward-thinking research, CAIPER seeks to drive interprofessionalism into new and dynamic arenas.

Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

As a transdisciplinary team of faculty, students, and staff, CHPDP conducts translational research, training, and outreach activities in close partnership with communities with the goal of improving health and preventing disease in vulnerable populations across the lifespan. CHPDP is structured into four cores including administrative, research, training, and community engagement.

Center for Innovation in Healthy and Resilient Aging

CIHRA provides the ideal structure to design, build, and sustain a nationallycompetitive venture in aging. Investigators blend expertise in prevention, behavior change, and intervention for midlife and older populations to solve challenges in aging from the individual to the policy level. CIHRA provides unique opportunities for faculty, student and community partner engagement.

Center for Mindfulness, Compassion and Resilience

The ASU Center for Mindfulness, Compassion and Resilience develops an academic “Culture of Caring” by advancing mindfulness and compassion practices at ASU and the community. Center connects global researchers, scholars, teachers, practitioners and learners around the concepts of mindfulness, compassion and well-being.

• Over 11,300 CAIPER Certificates of Completion issued.

• 8 eLearning modules focused on foundational and primary care.

• 2 digital magazines published on vulnerable populations, ethical dilemmas and burnout.

• Student Health Wellness Clinic (SHOW) student run clinic.

Programs

Traditional

The Traditional Prelicensure Clinical Nursing Program, located at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus, is designed for students who want to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and are completing their first bachelor’s degree.

Students pursuing this pathway complete prerequisite coursework and then apply for advancement to the upper-division clinical nursing program. Once selected for advancement, students complete the upper-division clinical nursing program in either a 16-month, year-round schedule or a 24-month academic year schedule.

Graduates from this program earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN to gain their RN licensure.

Accelerated

The Accelerated BSN Clinical Nursing Program is a full-time, 12-month upperdivision clinical nursing program for students with a bachelor’s degree or college credit from another discipline who wish to become an RN by completing their BSN.

Offered at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus, the Accelerated BSN offers start dates every spring semester. Accepted students start the program in January and graduate with their BSN in December.

Graduates from this program earn their BSN and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN to gain their RN licensure.

Master’s Entry

The Master of Science Entry into Nursing Practice is a new opportunity to become an entry-level RN while also earning your Master of Science in Nursing. This graduate program is ideal for anyone looking to change their career to nursing while building on their own education.

More comprehensive than a postbaccalaureate nursing degree, this 64-credit, two-year program is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree or above in a discipline other than nursing. Students are prepared at the graduate level to meet workforce demands by utilizing advanced nursing knowledge of evidence-based practice, leadership and systems theory.

Graduates from this program earn their Master of Science in Nursing and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN to gain their RN licensure.

Nursing – Concurrent Enrollment Program

The Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) is a collaboration between community colleges and Arizona State University, enabling students to complete their associate degree in nursing while concurrently earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). This program allows future nurses to advance their education without slowing their progression toward becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).

The CEP is designed to help nursing students succeed by providing high-quality education from a university ranked nationally for excellence in online education. Coursework is split between in-person classes at the community college and online courses at ASU, ensuring students can earn their BSN while maintaining their school/life balance.

Program Outline

The CEP is comprised of ten courses. During the fall and spring terms, students enroll in one ASU course while also working on their associate degree at a community college. During summer, students enroll in one or two courses while on break from their associate degree program. Students can enroll in ASU courses prior to beginning their associate degree in nursing. A midpoint start is also available for students currently enrolled in an associate degree nursing program.

Clinical Research Management (MS)

Preparing Students for Careers in the Diverse and Complex Field of Clinical Research Management

The MS in Clinical Research Management program prepares students to lead complex global clinical research operations at multiple types of employer settings in the rapidly growing clinical research industry. Graduates of the program will be qualified to fill specialized positions in regulatory affairs and clinical research operations. Potential employers include medical drug, device and product developers, governmental regulatory agencies, health care institutions, organizations conducting clinical research, academic medical institutions, and national and international contract research organizations.

The clinical research management program offers a transdisciplinary approach to education in the fiscal practices of conducting clinical research, the ethical and regulatory aspects of clinical research, and the overall operational management of clinical drug, biological, and medical device trials.

The program is designed to be flexible and conducive to the adult learner; part-time study is available. This 33-semester-hour program is offered online including a required six semester-hour capstone clinical research project. Please note that applicants must have six months or more experience in the clinical research industry.

HCR 561 (3) Responsible Conduct of Research Ethical concepts and policies for the responsible conduct of research (RCOR), institutional review boards, and dissemination of findings will be introduced.

HCR 563 (3) Fundamentals of Regulatory Affairs Principles of Regulatory Affairs and an overview of the role of ethical clinical research in new product development. Key regulations that relate to medical product safety, their origins, and applications. Preparation of documentation for the review of medical products throughout the product lifecycle.

HCR 565 (3) Clinical Research Operations

This course will provide students with the knowledge and operational skills necessary to develop, implement, and manage a clinical trial including budget an d contract negotiations, clinical trial site evaluation and selection, marketing and advertising for recruitment, and project management, audits and reporting.

HCR 568 (3) Healthcare Project Management

In this course, the focus will be on the knowl edge, skills, and technology that support excellence in project management. The course content will cover the nine areas of the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) recommended by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The nine areas include: integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement from a global perspective.

HCR 574 (3) Institutional Review Board (IRB) in Human Research

Analyzes the value and functions of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), including the basis for the IRB’s authority and the regulations that govern an IRB’s activities. Topics include IRB operations and ethical issues. Explores the historical basis for regulating research.

HCR 567

(3) Research Management and Cont emporary Research Topics

This course is designed to explore the five basic management functions as they relate to conduct of clinical research from the perspective of the research site sponsor. The basics of leadership communication, motivation, change theory, organizational culture, problem solving, negotiation, decision -making, and mission and values will be introduced in the class.

HCR 557 (3) Research Design and Methods for Clinical Research and Regulatory Science

The focus of this course is on the assessment of ethical design and methods used in clinical research and regulatory science; measurement issues in conducting research across diverse populations; reliability, validity, bias, and confounding; and appropriate statistical measurement and analysis for given study designs.

HCR 562 (3) Clinical Research Data Management and Technology Implementation

Orientation to database design and management, technology assessment methods, and data auditing procedures for continuous quality improvement (CQI) in clinical research.

HCR 551 (3) Clinical Research Monitoring

This course is designed to explore the monitoring function within the clinical research environment. The basics of monitoring for site selection, source document verification, and regulatory compliance will be introduced. Good clinical practice guidelines will be integrated throughout the course as a foundation for regulatory compliance.

HCR 552 (3) Medical Device Development and Regulation (choose between HCR 552 and HCR 564)

Comprehensive examination of the regulatory framework for the design, development, approval/clearance and marketing of medical devices in the United States throughout the product lifecycle.

Preparing Students for Careers in the Regulatory Aspects

With the role of clinical research managers (CRM) rapidly expanding, ASU’s online Master of Science in Clinical Research Management, Regulatory Science specialty, takes a transdisciplinary approach in providing an education strong in commercial and fiscal practices of conducting clinical research, ethical and regulatory aspects of research, and overall management of clinical drug, biological, and medical device trials.

The regulatory science concentration uses a multidisciplinary approach and encompasses course work in regulatory writing techniques, quality systems, and medical device or pharmaceutical regulation. The concentration for this online healthcare degree is designed to develop your understanding of how to meet regulatory oversight requirements as they relate to the conduct of clinical studies.

The program is designed to be flexible and conducive to the adult learner; part-time study is available. This 33-semester-hour program is offered online including a required six semester-hour capstone clinical research project.

Ethical concepts and policies for the responsible conduct of research (RCOR), institutional review boards, and dissemination of findings will be introduced.

HCR 565 (3) Clinical Research Operations (choose between HCR 565 or HCR 555 or HCR 552)

This course will provide students with the knowledge and operational skills necessary to develop, implement, and manage a clinical trial including bud get and contract negotiations, clinical trial site evaluation and selection, marketing and advertising for recruitment, and project management, audits and reporting.

HCR 558 (3) Technical Writing for the Regulatory Professional Focuses on teaching and applying writing and presentation skills critical for regulatory professionals.

HCR 563 (3) Fundamentals of Regulatory Affairs

Principles of Regulatory Affairs and an overview of the role of ethical clinical research in new product development. Key regulations that relate to medical product safety, their origins, and applications. Preparation of documentation for the review of medical products throughout the product lifecycle.

HCR 574 (3) Institutional Review Board (IRB) in Human Research

Analyzes the value and functions of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), including the basis for the IRB’s authority and the regulations that govern an IRB’s activities. Topics include IRB operations and ethical issues. Explores the historical basis for regulating research.

HCR 552 (3) Medical Device Development and Regulation (choose between HCR 565 or HCR 555 or HCR 552)

Comprehensive examination of the regulatory framework for the de sign, development, approval/clearance and marketing of medical devices in the United States throughout the product lifecycle.

HCR 553 (3) Quality Assurance and Clinical Research

Explores basic quality assurance techniques used in clinical research: documentation, standards, techniques, and processes associated with quality.

HCR 562 (3) Clinical Research Data Management and Technology Implementation

Orientation to database design and management, technology assessment methods, and data auditing procedures for continuous quality improvement (CQI) in clinical research.

HCR 567 (3) Research Management and Contemporary Research Topics

This course is designed to explore the five basic management functions as they relate to conduct of clinical research from the perspective of the research site sponsor. The basics of leadership communication, motivation, change theory, organizational culture, problem solving, negotiation, decision -making, and mission and values will be introduced in the class.

HCR 551 (3) Clinical Research Monitoring

This course is designed to explore the monitoring function within the clinical research environment. The basics of monitoring for site selection, source document verification, and regulatory compliance will be introduced. Good clinical practice guidelines will be integrated throughout the course as a fou ndation for regulatory compliance.

Our interdisciplinary PhD program provides both BS-PhD and MS-PhD students a research environment that fosters scholarship, critical thinking and creativity. HCI 540 Understanding and Applying Principles of Evidence Based Practice (3 credit hours)

This course develops participants’ knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary evidence-based practice and the use of EBP in facilitating the highest quality of care for consumers. Learn to lead based upon empirical evidence and personal experience and develop methods for using current evidence to “make the case” for change within healthcare systems.

HCI 542 Systems Thinking in a Complex Environment (3 credit hours)

This course focuses on systems principles and their application with an emphasis on innovation. Learn about healthcare system assessment, designing system interventions, responding to feedback and managing resistance to system innovations. Specific emphasis is given to systems thinking from a complexity science perspective and the implications for innovation.

HCI 544 IT Strategy in Healthcare (3 credit hours)

This course analyzes entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial dynamics and technology development. Learn about methods of managing research and development and new technology implementation, as well as the specifics of innovation in start-up organizations.

HCI 548 Advanced Principles and Concepts of Innovation (3 credit hours)

This course provides an overview of the theory and principles of process of innovation, the various methods of diffusion of innovation as well as the skills necessary to lead the design and application of innovations. Learn to apply innovation theory and principles, identify the obstacles to innovation and initiate strategies to overcome obstacles and to facilitate success.

This course details available public and private resources for innovation and identifies future/anticipated financial needs at the national and local levels to sustain a culture supportive of innovation. Nursing Informatics

Nursing Informatics integrates the science of nursing, information management and analytics to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. This concentration supports nurses as they partner with consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team and other stakeholders in data management and health care technology decision-making.

Patient Safety and Health Care Quality provides nurses with advanced preparation in nursing practice and the ability to translate concepts, practices and principles of safety and improvement science to enhance safe, effective patient care.
