Today we mark Veterans Day 2021, which celebrates the service of all U.S. veterans.

If you are looking for a way to mark the event, the The Downtown Edmond Business Association are hosting its inaugural Veterans Day Celebration on today, 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Festival Market on 1st and the Railroad Tracks in Downtown Edmond “Craig Brudzinski and myself decided to celebrate all of our Veterans with a new event in Downtown Edmond and we wanted to make it big and something that could become a tradition for our community. We also wanted to do it right, so we involved many leaders in our military and our city to plan this event.”, DEBA Executive Director Stephanie Carel said.

Carel’s husband, David Carel served as a combat medic in the Oklahoma National Guard for 21 years so the Veterans hold a special place in

their heart.

This event will include some important people and fun events, including speakers Senator Adam Pugh, Major General (R) Rita Aragon, Brigadier General (R) Ben T. Robinson, Mayor Darrell Davis and Emcee Colonel (R) Mustafa “Kujo” Koprucu.

Musical guests Kyle Dillingham and Voices of Crossings. Presentation of the colors by Edmond North JROTC Honor Guard. Invocation by 179th Command Chaplain. Live Art and Sale, Kids activity from the Edmond Public Library, Veteran’s card station that will be delivered to the VA Hospital, refreshments, history of the Veterans of Edmond Display, and information booths from the National Guard Family Program, Edmond VFW, Edmond American Legion and many more.

And while today is the actual day of the celebration, consider remembering and thanking our veterans year round.

Marcus Jones sworn in as new board member

By Patty Miller Edmond’s newest school board member Marcus Jones was sworn in Monday night at the Edmond School Board meeting.

Jones is representing District No. 5 and filling the place left vacant by Meredith Exline who resigned during the September 9 meeting.

Jones, one of 19 applicants for the position, said, “If you don’t put your hat in the ring, then you have no reason to complain.”

Jones is an Edmond North graduate and a computer/software developer.

He added his reason for running was because he wants to continue to help make the Edmond Public School system an outstanding one.

“I want to do my part and be more involved in my children’s education,” Jones said.

Jones and his wife Laura have two children ages six and 10 who are in kindergarten and fourth grade at Cross Timbers Elementary School.

“I am in it for the kids,” Jones said.

When asked about the recent events in the Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia, Jones said that calling parents terrorists is not something he thinks is appropriate, nor does he believe parents in the Edmond School District would ever act in a disrespectful way to merit that.

“We may have disagreements but I think as a society we can come together and make decisions that are best for our children,” Jones added.

Jones said that if he is unable to attend a board meeting in person he has watched it online.

When asked about the recent events in the Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia, Jones said that calling parents terrorists is not something he thinks is appropriate.

“With being able to view the meetings online, it definitely allows for more parent participation, and it lets more people know what is going on in the district,” Jones said.

School board president Jamie Underwood said, “After interviewing 19 candidates over a two-day period, we selected Mr. Jones because of his technology background and his interest in the public schools.”

Underwood said the board members felt like Jones will make thoughtful, well-informed decisions with the willingness to listen to all sides of an issue.

“He will listen and be calm and thorough in his decision making,” Underwood said. “During the interviews he emphasized he is willing to work with all people and gather information before making his decisions.

“He was well-informed on school issues, and we are excited to have him on board. We believe he will be an asset to our team.”

Underwood added he has two elementary aged children in the district, and he seemed very informed about what is going on with their education.

UCO students excel University of Central Oklahoma School of Design students recently exceled at the Graphex creative awards competition. Sponsored by the Art Director’s Club of Tulsa, Graphex is an annual creative awards competition that honors the work of students and professionals.

At this year’s competition, Graphex 52, out of the 150 entries, five UCO School of Design students won top prizes, including first, second and third place.

“I am so proud of these UCO design students; this is quite an achievement,” said Amy Johnson, M.F.A., Central professor of design and school director.

“Graphex is known for its incredibly high standards. It is always my pleasure to see our students recognized for their strong concepts, excellence in design and outstanding work ethic.”

Nhi Pham, a spring 2021 design graduate from Vietnam, won first place in the student portfolio category, the interactive category with Hamkke educational software for kids, the packaging category with Pup’s Puffs dog biscuits and received honorable mentions for both the multimedia campaign and packaging campaigns.

Esther Velasco, a spring 2021 design graduate from Oklahoma City, won second place in the student portfolio category and first place in the student print category with an illustrated poster for Paper Jam. Spencer Lee, a senior graphic design major from Weatherford, Oklahoma, won third place in the student portfolio category.

Dean Kelly, a senior graphic design major from Edmond, won the student multimedia category with a mobile ad design for Burger King.

Lexi Dickens, a senior graphic design major from Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, received an honorable mention in the package design category.

Organize & secure passwords now Last week we had a new phone system installed, a new computer set up to replace one that was 12 years old, and work done on our server. Normally the price would be my biggest frustration, but it was not. Actually, the pricing was not bad on any of it and all the new equipment was available. The phone system was 21 years old so you Ray Hibbard could say we got our money’s worth.

When all those technology folks hit your office, they seem to think it is necessary to have all the passwords. They needed them for machines, software, payment systems, the cloud and more.

“Can’t you just hack into everything like they do on television,” I asked. Apparently, in real life it does not work that way. There was one account that a tech was able to hack into, but I was sworn to secrecy.

Keeping track of all that is a pain. When you are a business owner you are the keeper of the passwords, but I am not particularly good at it. I have all my personal passwords and accounts to worry about keeping track of as well. I got the death stare look when many years ago I asked the person in charge of IT at a large business if I could not just pick one password for everything.

In addition to that being a major security issue, some of the accounts force you to change the darn things.

I promised myself that I would get our office and my personal passwords and accounts into orderly fashion that could be accessed easily but not so easily that they could get stolen. It caused me to do research. Normally I save this type of column for January when we feature business tips and financial forecast with our readers. I decided that since I was doing the research anyway, I should share. Besides, with the holiday season in full bloom, it might be better for folks to have some information to help keep their online accounts safe and organized all at the same time.

Here is some of what I found.

The average person has dozens of online accounts — each requiring a username and a password. And on top of demanding a password, most sites also have different multi-factor authentication methods and character requirements. Although the underlying goal is to safeguard your data, they may prove to exuberate the challenge of passwords management. I know they are trying to protect my information, but I hate those things.

A strong password creates a fortress against unauthorized access to your online accounts and physical devices. The importance of a good password is even more pronounced for businesses. In addition to protecting mission-critical data, passwords also safeguard clients’ information stored in the organization’s systems.

But since most small businesses do not have a dedicated cybersecurity team, they tend to fall in the crosshairs of hackers—i.e., they are easy picking. According to the Data Breach Investigations Report by Verizon, small businesses accounted for 43% of all data breached in 2019. Do not be part of the “breached” statistics! Take initiative-taking

You might as well announce to hackers that “my passwords are here, and I’d like you to attempt breaching the file.” The best thing about keeping track of passwords in Excel is that you do not need to be an IT expert. A basic understanding of spreadsheets will suffice.

The good news is that there are various secure ways to organize passwords. The options range from keeping track of passwords in Excel, using password management software, to scribbling on a paper (but take extra caution with the latter).

The best tool for organizing and managing your passwords/usernames depends on the volume of passwords, personal needs, and the number of users.

Keep Track of Passwords in Excel This method was recommended to me by one of our tech visitors last week. One simple, yet remarkably effective (if done right) way of organizing passwords is to use encrypted Excel worksheets. All you must do is Google “Password log Excel template” or “Spreadsheet templates for storing passwords” and choose an Excel template that suits your needs.

Alternatively, you can easily create a customized password log from scratch. Just categorize the spreadsheet into relevant columns to capture the data—including the specific account, your login username, the password, and maybe some comments or hints.

After entering your data, the next—and arguably the most important—step is to lock the document with a secure master password. Failure to do this would leave you more exposed than before. It is like putting all your eggs in one basket and leaving them out in the open.

To secure your all-important Excel file, open the “File” menu. Navigate to the info tab and click on “Protect Workbook.” You will see an option to encrypt with password. After you have chosen a strong password, confirm it and you are done!

Your Excel file and all your important passwords are now safely organized and secured with a hard-to-crack master password. Whenever you attempt to open the file, you will be prompted to provide the password.

The next step to keep track of passwords in Excel is to store the document in an easily accessible but secure location. Consider cloud services such as Google Drive or Dropbox for convenience. And NEVER save your file as “passwords.”

Keep Track of Passwords with Password Management Software There are a host of database applications and password management services that can help you keep passwords organized. They function as digital vaults — gathering all your critical data and keeping it safe in highly encrypted formats.

Instead of having to remember a truckload of complicated passwords that contain all kinds of symbol and Caps variations, you only must recall one hyper-secure password. Your data is often synchronized across PDA platforms and desktop components to ensure your information is available as and when you need it.

Some of the most popular platforms include DashLane Premium, LastPass, and 1Password.

Finding the best app comes down to your personal needs and preferences—including the ease of use, cost, or user reviews.

Keep in mind that while some password management services are free, others may demand paid subscriptions. But considering the amount of risk you are exposed to by not having a secure way to organize your passwords—I would say this is money well spent.

How to Keep Track of Passwords with PaperBased Systems Although digital is the future, some people tend to be reluctant with electronic password management solutions. If you fall into this category, you need to learn the best practices to facilitate the security of your passwords. Here are a few tips to leverage paper-based systems without sacrificing security: Never label your notebook or password-containing card with phrases that suggest it is a password keeper.

Written password should never be stored/placed anywhere visible or easily accessible.

When writing down passwords, avoid using the full characters. Use hints that only you can figure.

For example, if one of your passwords is “24rEx2013,” you may use a hint like “date+dog+year” instead of the actual password.

This acts as a precautionary level of security in case someone accesses your password keeper.

In addition to using hints, consider shuffling the list is a specific sequence that is only known to you. For example, you can invert the list – i.e., the password to the first username is placed at the bottom of the list. The idea is to “code” your data — making it intentionally difficult for unauthorized people to make sense of the information.

I hope some of those ideas work for you. My only advice is to dig all those passwords out and get them organized before the tech crew arrives.

Kevin Calvey says he will seek DA position Former Army prosecutor Kevin Calvey today announced his Republican candidacy for Oklahoma County District Attorney.

“I am running for District Attorney as a Calvey proven conservative to protect public safety, and to repair the damaged relationship between the DA’s office and law enforcement,” said Calvey.

“My experience in the Army prosecuting war criminals in Iraq taught me how important it is for prosecutors to cooperate with those protecting our safety. Unlike our current DA leadership, I will support the police, not persecute them.”

Calvey noted that the current DA leadership filed felony charges against five Oklahoma City police officers for shooting an armed robber who appeared to be reaching for a weapon.

“That case, #CF-2021-975, is a wrongful and malicious prosecution of police officers who defended each other and the public from a violent thug,” said Calvey. “My first day in office, I will dismiss those charges and other wrongful charges against law enforcement, and open an investigation as to how such bogus charges could have happened. The current DA’s hand-picked successor,

Gayland Gieger, lacks the moral courage to stand up to his boss on this malicious prosecution of police officers.”

The Army awarded Calvey the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq. The narrative accompanying Calvey’s medal states, “Captain Calvey obtained numerous death penalty convictions and long-term prison sentences against the terrorists he prosecuted.”

Calvey indicated he would discuss several other areas for reform at the DA’s office as his campaign progresses.

RED Day Run helps nonprofits

Edmond 5K nets $220,000 Edmond’s largest charitable run, the RED Day Run, handed out $220,000 to eight Edmond-area nonprofits at the “Thank You” Finish Line Breakfast Tuesday morning, again breaking the record for the largest contribution made in RED Day history. This brings the organization’s 7-year giving total to $896,500. Saturday’s virtual 5K and 1-mile Fun Run had 1,564 registered runners, walkers, and volunteers.

“Today, the RED Day Run gave away $220,000, and I want to tell you something,” began Mo Anderson, 2021 RED Day Run Marquee Sponsor, Vice Chairman of the Board of Keller Williams Re-

alty, International and longtime Edmond resident. “You all sell thousands of houses, but you are known for your charitable work in the community. The truth is, your charitable work is more important, and don’t ever forget that!” She then turned to rev up the crowd largely made up of realtors, mortgage lenders, insurance agents, charities, and volunteers. “Now, what’s our goal for next year?!”

The October 23rd event was presented in part by Steve and Linda Slawson, Keller Williams Central Oklahoma, Gateway Mortgage OKC, Brad Reeser, Certainty Home Loans, Stewart Title Oklahoma, Chicago Title Oklahoma, Arvest

Bank, and Metro OKC Insurance.

The eight nonprofits that benefited from the Run were Wings Special Needs Community, Project 66 Food & Resource Center, Pepper’s Ranch Foster Care Community, Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, Folds of Honor Oklahoma, Edmond Public Schools Foundation, Edmond Mobile meals, and OKC Dream Center.

The organizations received the funds raised from registrations, sponsorships, and donations on a pro-rata basis based on the number of votes each charity receives. Participants were able to choose which charity their vote goes toward when registering or donating.

Finishing first in the voting was Project 66 food pantry. They received 25% of the total amount raised, equaling $55,000 to further their mission.

In second place was Wings Special Needs Community, which was presented with $44,000 to continue helping enhance the lives of those with special needs in Edmond.

The Edmond Public Schools Foundation came in third place, receiving $33,000, which will go toward filling the gaps left by state and federal funding.

Finishing fourth in the voting was Folds of Honor Oklahoma, and was awarded $22,000.

Folds of Honor provides educational scholarships to the families of veterans.

Peppers Ranch took the 5th place slot and with it, $13,200. Peppers Ranch is a foster care community here in town.

The 6th and 7th place finishers, Edmond Mobile Meals and Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, respectively. The organizations received 5% of the funds raised, or $11,000 each.

Last but certainly not least was OKC Dream Center. They walked away with $8,800 which will be put toward providing services for men in need here in Edmond.

Ten percent of the money raised is reserved for other charities. Each of the following organizations received $2,000: All Things Baby, Angels Foster Family Network, Anna’s House Foundation, Citizens Caring for Children, Filling Tummies, Fostering Sweet Dreams, Halo Project, K Club for Kindness, Project 31, Turning Point Ministries, and UR Special Ministries.

Evelyn Mae Pace Evelyn Mae Pace, 98, died peacefully November 6, 2021, at Bradford Village Healthcare Center. She was born October 4, 1923 in Beaumont, Texas, the daughter of Alvin V. Eckert and Gladys A. Lisbony.

Evelyn attended Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont, Texas. During World War II, she worked as a butcher in her uncle’s butcher shop before beginning a career in the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office and eventually retiring as an Assistant County Auditor in the Jefferson County Auditor’s Office. In 1956, Evelyn married Clifton Pace; they celebrated 35 years of marriage before Clifton passed in 1991. Evelyn was a devout member of the Lutheran Church and in the later years of her life enjoyed spending time with her two great granddaughters and going out to the casino with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clifton Pace and brother Alvin Eckert II. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Donna Bass, and husband David; granddaughter, Courtney Harlin, and husband Timothy; great granddaughters, Oakley and Sutton; niece, Vickie Ladner and nephew, Alvin Eckert III; and great nieces, Misti Simms, Mondie McFandin and great nephew, Kent Ladner.

Visitation will be held at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly Ave., Edmond, Oklahoma from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, also at Matthews Funeral Home, followed by interment at Gracelawn Cemetery. Political give & take Helping to feed needy

By Steve Gust Last week’s elections reminded me of an old adage I remembered hearing.

In politics there is no such thing as a complete victory or a complete defeat.

The world of poliSteve Gust tics has a real ebb and flow to it. The political landscape can change. Whenever someone thinks they have it figured out, it can change.

That seemed to be the case in Virginia.

What’s odd is that Democrat Terry McAuliffe actually got more than 500,000 votes for Governor last week than he did in 2013 when he won. He lost to Republican Glenn Youngkin this time by over 70,000 votes. Not sure how to explain that one.

What people have to remember, and politicians seem to forget, is that an election win doesn’t usually translate into a sweeping mandate for change.

Joe Biden is under the impression that everyone wants socialism now. Maybe

his advisers are telling him that. I guess that’s why we should make a $450,000 payment to some 5,500 illegal immigrants. Those are the payments Biden called “garbage” last week and then by last weekend defended them.

Politicians always assume almost everyone agrees with them when they win an election. They think they can spend more political capital than what they actually have.

But people generally don’t give up their beliefs just because their candidate loses. That was certainly the case in 2016. After Trump won, liberals and Democrats weren’t going to just throw their hands up and give up their beliefs.

What someone like Biden is learning is that it’s a lot easier to wage a campaign and criticize an office holder. It’s a different story once you win an office. At that point you own whatever happens. And if you mess up, your critics have a field day. In addition, I don’t think Americans just don’t like going too far left or too far right.

By Travis Arnold President & CEO of Feed the Children Whether you have an opportunity to have family mealtime every night or only once a week, I think we can all agree it's important to take advantage of every opportunity we have to nourish the mind, soul and body of those we care about.

You may be surprised to learn that 46% of Americans eat dinner alone, and more than 40% of young adults eat while distracted — while driving, on the phone, working or watching television. In fact, family therapist Anne Fishel recently noted only about 30% of families regularly eat dinner together.

Studies have shown

that eating meals with our family — and the connection and quality time that comes along with it — actually makes us happier and healthier. I’ve come across dozens of studies that showcase how family dinners are great for our physical health, mental health and self-esteem.

In fact, in one particular study, Nayaab Sattar, an extension educator with SNAP-Education from the University of Illinois said, “Eating meals together is a great way to spend more time together and connect. These days, we are either eating on the go, at different times, or we get distracted while eating by a number of things.”

For millions of Americans, family mealtime is

out of reach. This is not just because of busy schedules and commitments, but also because they grapple with food insecurity.

Just this month, more than 12% of parents and nearly 20 million adults reported that their household didn’t have enough to eat in the last seven days. When asked why, many reported they simply “couldn’t afford to buy more food.”

I hear stories from parents from across the U.S. who worry not only what they will put on the table for their children to eat, but also how to stretch every penny to make sure their meals last. They worry about keeping the lights on and other bills paid.

As we extend the courtesy of kindness to all, we can help provide some of the joys of family mealtime for our friends and neighbors.

As we head into the holiday season — a season of giving — Feed the Children has committed to helping our neighbors in Oklahoma and across the country through our No Hunger Holidays campaign. We will be distributing 60 tractor-trailers of food, essentials, books and toys to communities — including several in Oklahoma — throughout November and December. In total, we will provide shelf-stable food to supplement more than two million meals to help struggling families when they need it most.

With all of this past year’s challenges, it’s more important than ever that we come together to support our neighbors who often go without. I encourage you to join me in helping to make the season brighter. And, I’m hopeful that as we extend the courtesy of kindness to all.

Lankford touts freedom & security in bill James Lankford (R-OK) offered several amendments to the Senate’s Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual bill to authorize funding for our military and related services. Included in his amendments were provisions to retain skilled veterans in our workforce, and non-competitive eligibility Lankford for high-performing civilian provisions to create more flexibility in temporary and term appointments, and enhance hiring procedures for employees.

“While Biden and the Democrats are focused on fighting climate change and inventing new ways to take Americans’ hard-earned money, Oklahomans are worried about things like national security, military readiness, inflation, rising energy prices, securing the southern border, and stopping Biden’s vaccine mandates. Biden’s priorities are clearly not Oklahomans’ priorities,” said Lankford. “I am offering several amendments to the defense bill to ensure we can

continue to confront the national security challenges at our border and stop Biden’s vaccine mandate.

Oklahoma service members and defense contractors have called my office furious that their Commander in Chief is forcing them to pick between their job and the COVID vaccine. I will continue to press these policies that actually help our military members now and stop the ongoing national security crisis at our southern border.”

Lankford offered his Stop Vaccine Mandates Act, which revoke’s President Biden’s abusive vaccine mandate on federal employees and contractors, as well as amendments to get to the bottom of the process for eligible service members to apply for and receive a religious accommodation from the COVID-19 vaccine mandates, get information on military readiness due to Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate on service members, and to resume construction of the southern border wall halted by the Biden Administration.

Since March, Lankford has worked to ensure Oklahomans and Americans are aware of Biden’s lack of enforcement at the border, including visiting the border to see first-hand the number of illegal migrants crossing, visiting both the Arizona and Texas borders to expose what was happening. leased a report that exposed billions in waste to pay contractors to babysit the border wall materials while the Biden Administration “studies” it, even though Congress already allocated the money to build the wall. Lankford grilled Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Mayorkas on his ongoing delay to finish the wall.

Lankford’s amendments addressing the national security issues at our southern border and the impact of Biden’s vaccine mandate on our nation’s service members include: · Stop Biden’s vaccine mandates – This amendment would implement Lankford’s Stop Vaccine Mandates Act to repeal President Biden’s Executive Orders, which mandate vaccines for federal employees and federal contractors including Oklahoma defense contractors who have contacted Lankford’s office to ask him to stop the mandate. · Resuming border wall construction– This amendment would resume the contracts to complete the border wall, install the gates, and finish installing the technology. The Biden Administration suspended the contracts for the wall’s completion, and this amendment would go ahead with using funds already approved by Congress previously under the Trump Administration. Earlier this year, Lankford released a blistering report on $2 billion in wasted taxpayer dollars to pay Defense contractors not to build the border wall while more than 1,700,000 migrants attempted to cross the border this fiscal year—the highest number in recorded history. Biden ultimately ended the defense contracts to finish the wall despite Congress previously appropriating the money toward its completion. · Religious Accommodation IG Investigation - This amendment would address the growing concerns Lankford hears from service members who say their leadership is not properly reviewing their religious accommodation request and is instead providing blanket denials.

Tech students & energy jobs Students in the Computer Science Academy of Francis Tuttle Technology Center's Rockwell Campus now have first-hand knowledge of a career in the energy sector.

OG&E has partnered with Andy Harbert's morning and afternoon capstone classes on separate projects that offer a glimpse of what it will be like to have a professional job. Students working on the projects also gain personal insight into what it's like to work at OG&E, one of the state's leading power providers.

"OG&E is committed to supporting education, and this partnership with Francis Tuttle is a great way to help energize these high school students' future careers," said Mark Silvers, Director Learning & Workforce Development at OG&E. "Providing 'real world' experiences in the classroom offers a unique opportunity for them to discover their passions. Through our guest lectures and business problem-solving scenarios, our hope is to inspire students to pursue one of the many diverse career paths in the energy industry. We would be thrilled to have any one of these students come work for OG&E someday."

The morning class is developing an application that would carry over employees' unused vacation hours into a new cycle. The current process requires a series of forms and manual data entry, and the app would automatically handle all of those processes.

Students must accurately record their progress and provide regular updates during professional presenta-

tions to OG&E managers who visit the class. The project illustrates the wide range of career possibilities for computer science experts.

"I'm going to be doing presentations in my job in the future, so it's an introduction to the business side of this field," Ethan Smith, a thirdyear academy student who attends Edmond Santa Fe High School, said.

"Plus, it's something that I can put on my resume and say I worked on this with a real company and with real professionals. I feel like this will be very beneficial for me in the future."

Harbert's afternoon class is completing a simulated cyber security job. Jason Nations, a manager in Enterprise Security at OG&E, is responsible for facilitating the project. He communicates the needs of a “client” that must be met in order to complete the job.

Just like in the real world, those requirements can change and intermittent goals must be established and met. Nations encourages students to record all of their progress and discuss what they experience as the project moves forward.

"I really appreciate OG&E's willingness to partner with us in our Computer Science Academy Capstone course," Harbert said. "OG&E personnel have been fantastic to work with; they have shared invaluable realworld lessons with our students; they have provided effective feedback on student deliverables and presentations, and have served as great mentors.

Pie tradition that might be better than store-bought

By Carol Smaglinski “Hey, Sweetie Pie, how about a piece of pie?” says Grannie to her pride and joy grandson.

“What kind do you have, Grannie?” he asks.

So proud of her abilities as a remarkably good pie maker, she quickly rattles off the possibilities.

“Well, there’s Apple, Lemon Meringue or my very favorite, Pumpkin Pie,” she answers.

The youngster sits, thinking over the possibilities, while his grand dad, the great connoisseur of the family, whispers under his breath, “One of each, please.”

Oooh, deciding upon those three, now that is a tough question, because each variety is one of life’s little luxuries, and absolute mouth-watering favorites every Thanksgiving.

Your best bet? Go with the pumpkin, which could contain less calories, roughly 100 calories less, and be more nutritious. Since it only has a bottom crust, you will be eating less.

Just keep telling yourself while indulging in this festive treat: it’s a vegetable!

The pumpkin is a member of the squash family. Many years ago, people were called “pumpkin heads.”

That was because of a particular way of cutting men’s hair. It was due to a law among New Englanders as the Puritan Blue Laws prescribed that men wore their hair in a special way.

The hair was cut short all around their heads. They usually used a cap, plunked it on their head and all the hair that was peeking out from under it was cut short.

But then they began to use a half of a pumpkin head as a substitute.

The name and the particular hair style looked so unflattering that anyone who got one also got stuck with being called stupid or a pumpkin head.

There’s no need to feel stupid in the kitchen when getting ready for one of the best holidays of the year.

Here’s a good tip.

Before you start any baking chore, make sure you have all the ingredi-

ents and needed utensils out on a tray ready, so you won’t have to run next door for a missing essential and you can stay calm.

Remember, what some anonymous brilliant person once said, “The hostess must be like a duck; unruffled on the surface and paddling like hell underneath.”

In the following recipe for Pumpkin Pie, some cooks may even add a bit of hard cider, sherry or brandy to the pumpkin custard. That’s your choice.

Pumpkin Pie With a Nut Topping A 9-inch unbaked pie shell, reserved ¾ cup brown sugar 1 Tbsp. flour ½ tsp. salt 2 tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp each of allspice, cloves and ginger 2 cups solid pack pumpkin, (a one pound can) 1-½ cups evaporated milk, (a 12oz. can) 1 egg, beaten Nut Topping (recipe below) Whipped cream Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix brown sugar, flour, salt, spices and blend well. Stir in canned pumpkin, add evaporated milk and egg. Stir until smooth. Pour into the pie shell.To avoid spills when carrying the pie to the oven, place the unfilled pie shell on the oven shelf and then pour in the filling.

While it is baking for 30 minutes, put together the nut topping.

Pecan Topping Mix ½ cup chopped pecans, 1 Tbsp. shortening, 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 and ½ tsp. grated orange rind, 1 Tbsp. flour until mixture is crumbly.

Add nut topping to the top of the pie in a circle about 2 inches in from the outside edge of the rim. and place back in the oven. Continue to bake for another 15 minutes until a knife inserted into the middle of the pie comes out clean. When serving, top with whipped cream.

Non-profits benefit from Cycle 66

Inaugural biking event a success

By Richard Stephens Jr. Special to Edmond L&L “Awesome”, “invigorating” and “worthwhile” were comments heard in Edmond on Nov 7th as the town shifted gears by offering a unique – and healthy – event called Cycle 66 that saw 555 bicyclists pedal on three routes through the local area.

The Cycle 66 theme was chosen to increase visitation on Route 66 in Oklahoma, including Edmond, which claims 18 miles of the Mother Road. Portions of the $40 and $10 registration fee adults and children paid, respectively, will be donated to Oklahoma’s Route 66 Association and OU’s Autumn Life Behavioral Health Center.

Jennifer Seaton, President of Cycle 66 and Director of Visit Edmond, said cyclists would gather at the corner of 1st Street and Broadway Ave., downtown Edmond. Those cycling 66 miles took off at 7:50 a.m., followed by the 33-mile group at 8 a.m., and finally, the 10-mile cyclists at 8:10 a.m.

The fall weather was cool, crisp and sunny, perfect for cycling outside with friends and family.

Two hundred and thirty-three experienced riders petaled the 66-mile route through Edmond, Oklahoma City, Jones, Luther, and Arcadia, taking them on portions of Route 66. Alex Adriaanse and Evan Floyd of Edmond smiled as they related their experience on the longest course: “Excellent stretch ride! Fantastic!”

The 33-mile group of 232 intermediate riders, including Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell, rode south through Edmond heading to the State Capitol.

They rode on Lincoln Boulevard (Route 66) but took a different route back to Edmond. At a rest stop at OU Health Center, Lynn and Barbara, both OU employees, liked their 33-mile ride thus far, exclaiming it was, “invigorating” and “awesome.”

Ninety 10-mile cyclists, mostly families with children, took a “leisurely ride” that showcased “… downtown Edmond, the University of Central Oklahoma campus, and our community’s best parks and bike paths” announced the Cycle 66 website, https://www.cycle66ok.com/.

Each route returned to the starting point, where participants joined in a variety of free fun events at the Festival Market Place: music, six food and drink trucks, face painting, a kids’ bouncy house, and vendors providing goods and information until 3:00 pm.

they rode on Oklahoma’s public streets. Mike Osburn, President of PoliGRAM, contracted to hold Cycle 66, said his staff made sure to use plenty of law enforcement, crowd control, “support wagons,” and seven rest stops along the route. According to Marian Free, Event Coordinator, there were three minor accidents she knew of and one person was taken to a hospital (flipped over the front of bicycle). Despite many miles bicycled on public roads, few riders had problems.

Large scale events depend on a massive amount of help. More than 100 volunteers gave their time

and 20 sponsors provided financial, in-kind, and volunteer support.

Free paused in the afternoon to give her assessment of the first-time event. “I felt very proud of Edmond. We feel like it’s a resounding success.”

She also summed up Cycle 66. “Our primary purpose is to re-imagine Route 66 for a new generation of Oklahomans. We’re also aiming to encourage fitness and active lifestyles within our community and of course, our final purpose is to give back to the Oklahoma Route 66 Association and to Autumn Life.”

Review of movie ‘Finch’

Hanks connects in film with dog & robot

By George Gust “Finch” is the story of a robot (voice of Caleb Landry Jones), built to protect the life of his creator's, Finch, (Tom Hanks) beloved dog, learns about life, love, friendship and what it means to be human on a post-apocalyptic earth.

There is no doubt that Hanks has led a legendary acting career with a deep catalogue of brilliant performances in iconic movies. “Finch” finds Hanks back in a somewhat familiar territory with a story that focuses on isolation and the little moments in life that bring meaning to a hopeless situation. Much like the emotional performance he delivered in “Castaway” Hanks commands the screen while having no other actor in the scene, however this time around his volleyball companion is replaced by a trusty dog and a naive robot.

With the proliferation of post-apocalyptic genre of films there’s a tight rope when building out the world of the film; too much exposition about how we got here and you lose the audi-

ence’s attention, but not enough and the audience won’t buy into your premise. “Finch” does a fantastic job walking this tight rope where Hanks brings a lived-in charm to a few innocuous lines of dialogue to his endearing robotic travel companion that sell the tragedy of the situation and hook you into the film’s story. And the filmmakers made an intelligent choice to take time to set up the way in which Finch has been able to survive focusing on the details of

his everyday life that are loaded with meaning and implication.

Overall, “Finch” is a slow-paced film that has an enormous heart even though the film features only one human character. The voice performance from Jones as the ‘born yesterday’ robot has a surprising amount of soul and character, so much so that you’ll forget that the robot is a computer-generated character. “Finch” is not an action-packed last man on earth thriller like “I Am Legend” but features a trio of endearing characters (yes, including the trusty dog) that tell a gripping story of humanity and friendship.

“Finch” is rated PG-13 for brief violent images.

Official: Economic outlook favorable Rapidly rising crude oil and natural gas prices helped push Oklahoma Gross Receipts to the Treasury into uncharted territory in October, State Treasurer Randy McDaniel announced last week.

Gross receipts of $1.27 billion for October and $14.7 billion for the past 12 months set record McDaniel highs yet again. Monthly receipts are up by 16 percent over the year and 12-month collections are 11.2 percent higher than during the prior period.

Treasurer McDaniel said the outlook for Oklahoma’s economy remains favorable.

“The growth we are seeing reflects true economic expansion even when inflationary factors are taken into consideration,” McDaniel said.

“While the strong performance of the state econ-

omy – evidenced by record high collections and low unemployment – has become almost routine, it’s still impressive.”

Gross production collections topped $100 million for a third consecutive month and grew by more than 100 percent compared to the same month of the prior year for the seventh month in a row.

October gross production receipts are from oil field activity in August, when West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil at Cushing averaged $67.73 per barrel and Henry Hub natural gas averaged $4.07 per million BTU. As an indicator of what’s to come, crude oil prices have risen 20 percent and natural gas by 35 percent in the past two months.

In October, every major revenue stream showed growth except for motor vehicle collections, which were down less than 2 percent. However, one line item – the medical marijuana tax – fell below col-

lections from October of last year by almost 5 percent. It marks the first year-over-year decline in that revenue source.

Collections from the past 12 months show growth in every major revenue stream.

Other indicators The Oklahoma Business Conditions Index for October points to anticipated economic growth in the coming months. The monthly index was set at 63.0, up from 58.6 in September. Numbers above 50 indicate expansion is expected during the next three to six months.

The September unemployment rate in Oklahoma was reported as 3.0 percent by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s jobless rate was down from 3.3 percent in August and from 5.7 percent in September 2020. The U.S. unemployment rate was set at 4.8 percent in August.

Francis Tuttle Tech teacher up for top honor by group Francis Tuttle Technology Center instructor Sherri Gleaves has been named as a finalist for the Teacher of the Year award by the Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE).

Gleaves, a Broadcast and Video Production instructor at Francis Tuttle, was previously named Teacher of the Year at the State and Region IV level. The national award, for which she is one of five final candidates, will be announced at ACTE’s virtual Awards Gala on Nov. 30.

Gleaves achieved a childhood dream by becoming a teacher and has been an instructor at Francis Tuttle for eight years. Prior to that, she launched the broadcast and video production pilot program in conjunction with the district while working at Deer Creek High School.

Gleaves works to instill a love of broadcast and video in her students and loves watching them grow from strength to strength.

The student organization Business Professionals of America is close to her heart.

Before joining Francis Tuttle, Gleaves taught for Oklahoma City Public Schools for 11 years. In all, she has been teaching for about 25 years.

“I’m thrilled to be a CareerTech teacher,” Gleaves said. “It’s been my lifetime goal. CareerTech gives back so much. I really like the networking and curriculum sharing between schools. No one is afraid to help anyone else.”

She has taught software applications, accounting, computer repair, desktop publishing and video during her CareerTech tenure. During the pandemic, Gleaves was part of the effort to shift learning online, some-
