2024 AWARD WINNER
The Downtown Edmond Arts Festival has received another award from the International Festival and Event Association. The 2024 Arts Festival program, inserted into Edmond Life and Leisure the week before the festival, received a Gold Pinnacle Award in the Newspaper Insert/Supplement category.
This is the third time the program has won an award in the category. The magazine, designed by Arts Festival Co-Chair Michelle Schaefer, also won a Silver Award in 2022 and a Gold Award in 2023.
The IFEA is the premier association supporting and enabling festival and event professionals around the world.
The 2025 featured artist, Todd E. Clark, viewed himself as an artist throughout his life. While he explored other art forms, graphic design has the greatest appeal to him. He describes art as his place of refuge. Especially, when it is done in a way to inspire a smile, like his featured piece, “Kitty Boy Prints.” The chosen image also depicts Clark’s passion and favorite art style.
From his earliest childhood, he maintained an interest in art. There was a season when he experimented with pencil drawings. The process was slow, and he soon lost interest because he tended not to finish the piece he was working on. He also worked with digital photography, software, hand drawings, painting and creating collages. He was a musician for a while and acted in community theater. He still dabbles in some of those artistic channels.
He discovered his niche in high school. The new direction began after his advanced art teacher wasn’t too impressed by his work. Clark was about to take the class for a second time when a friend told him that vo-tech taught commercial art. So, the two of them signed up for a graphic design class at vo-tech.
Clark said, “Graphic design was a way to fulfill the artistic needs I had. It was quick and I could make a living at it.” At first, graphic art was a creative outlet, career and hobby. Due to his enthusiasm, he invested a lot of time in graphic design and illustration. It helped him to branch out into other areas of art, like illustration, print making and telling visual stories. Clark said, “That’s why I’ve done it for so many years.”
Another reason he loved art is the collaboration that happens with artists. That same collective effort happens whether it’s music, band, theatre or graphic design. Clark also works together with other artists at Factory Obscura to create immersive art. It’s interactive and involves all the senses. Clark said, “The artists in the OKC area are so collaborative.”
The inspiration for the chosen piece, “Kitty Boy Prints,” is a cat belonging to Clark and his wife,
Laura. He was rescued by the kids from Artspace at Untitled, where Clark does his print making and consulting. Clark said, “We met this kitten and adopted him that day.” They named him Prints. Prints likes to hang out at the gallery and do art with Clark.
Clark lost his father a few months before he met Prints. The beloved fur baby helped to pull him out of the sorrow that he experienced over the previous nine months. Prints became a symbol of joy after the grief.
Clark tells his stories through pictures rather than words. Using graphic design, he tells a story through “Kitty Boy Prints” that holds deep meaning to him. His desire was to use imagery to bring joy, even if those who view the work aren’t aware of his inspiration for doing the piece.
No more hunting for a parking space! You can park at one of two UCO parking lots on the west side of 1st and University, and board a shuttle bus. After a short three minute ride you will be dropped off, just a block away from the arts festival.
The service will be free, thanks to sponsorship by CityLink, Visit Edmond, the Edmond Chamber and the Edmond Economic Development Authority. The bus will run about every 15 minutes from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, and from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm on Sunday, May 4.
“We often heard of visitors frustrated with the lack of close up parking, especially from parents of young children and those with mobility issues,” said Michelle Schaefer, Arts Festival co-chair. “We want to make it easy for anyone to be able to attend without worrying about walking several blocks in the heat and wind.”
