La città si contraddistingue, infatti, anche per i prodotti della terra. Ed è proprio da questo punto di forza che la Proloco di Apice (guidata dalla presidente Erminia Manserra) con la collaborazione dell’Amministrazione comunale (guidata da Ida Antonietta Albanese) ha come obiettivo la promozione del territorio a 360°, anche attraverso la collaborazione con la Regione Campania. Fiore all’occhiello è la manifestazione intitolata “Rassegna fiera dei prodotti tipici dei tre colli di Apice” con “Sagra degli Orti ed INFIOR..Orto”, che si svolge ogni anno l’ultimo sabato ed l’ultima domenica di agosto. I prodotti tipici di Apice sono gli ortaggi, in particolare: peperoni, pomodori e zucca secca, uva passola, avvolta in foglie di fico, albicocche e fichi secchi. Particolati sono infine le pere Mastantuono sottaceto. I piatti tipici sono: i Cicatielli cu ppulieio; la zucca cucinata con prodotti di maiale e patate; la Ciculiata, ossia carne grassa di maiale preferibilmente di scannatura, piena di sangue del collo e peperoni sottaceto e U paparul nbuttunat. Molto apprezzati sono le zeppole natalizie fatte con acqua, farina e patate e i “Cazzi Malati”(tipici del periodo della vendemmia), tarallini fatti con farina ed impastati con il sedimento del mosto e poi cotti nel mosto. Perchè “Cazzi Malati”? Nel passato l'uva veniva pigiata, in grossi tini di legno, dai maschi. I fumi dell'alcol li rendevano storditi, per cui le mogli li chiamavano Cazzi malati. Il progetto della ProLoco Apice e della Amministrazione comunale è far diventare Apice Orto d'Italia. Ogni giovedì e domenica si svolge il mercato, dove i protagonisti sono i prodotti locali.

Dopo 200 metri si svolta a sinistra immettendosi sulla strada provinciale Appia seguendo successivamente i cartelli stradali in direzione Apice.
Panoramica di Apice Vecchia
Apice is situated in the Campania region, 13 kilometers from the province city of Benevento, and about one hour and a half from Naples. The town is surrounded by green hills and stretches over lush landscapes, with three rivers running through: the Calore river, the Miscano river and the Ufita river. Time gives this town its charm and it is time that divided the town in two parts, past and present, under one sky: Old Apice and New Apice. In 1962 and 1980, the Old town was hit by two strong earthquakes. The last earthquake was such a disaster that it forced the population to abandon everything and leave. This, in fact, is the part of Apice that still today attracts tourists and scholars from all over the world. Walking through the streets of the center of town, you can still feel the never-ending moments of that tragic earthquake. The houses are totally deserted but the life experienced inside can still be perceived, allowing us to imagine what people were doing at the exact moment of the disaster. But the town, despite the tragedy, has a lot to offer its visitors, as if it were a small treasure chest full of monuments. The Castle dell’Ettore, commonly called the Medieval Castle, has been declared a national monument, and belongs to the county of Ariano. The Castle is situated in the historical center of the town and was built on its highest and its most strategical point, overlooking both the central valley of the Calore River and the ancient village. The fortress, thanks to constant reconstruction after the earthquake, and renovation, is currently in good condition. The fortress has a decagonal shape, with thick walls surrounding it and featuring four ramparts, although only one is visible today. Furthermore, you can admire the votive chapel and see the magnificent frescoes on the walls. In the ancient days, the Castle represented the heart of the community, so roads and boroughs were developed around the fortress. Near the manor’s house, in Via Cavour to be precise, you can find Palazzo Barone, of particular importance due to the frescoes that in part were lost during the earthquake, according to some sources in 1930, and Palazzo Perriello. In Apice, you can also find the ruins of seven castles, in the areas of Tignano and Fiego. This is a sign that the town could count on a complex system of defense and control of the territory which had in Castle dell’Ettore its most important point. Other points of interest in the center of the town are: the Church of S. Nicola, the church of S. Bartolomeo and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The latter, which has the shape of a Latin cross, is divided into three naves, and has a very important historical and cultural value. On the sides of the
central altar there are two angels dating back to the 1700s, while in the back of the church there is a wooden choir and paintings on the wall dating back to the XVI century. In 1400, according to some, there were 18 altars inside the church. The bell tower of the church that we see today, has been recently built. Apice, in the past, was also home to various religious congregations and this is why we still find many buildings used as places of worship, along with several abbeys and convents. The Benedictine abbey is found in the S. Lorenzo contrada, the San Giovanni alla Rocca abbey of the Augustine Fathers is in the San Martino contrada, in addition to the convents, spread throughout the town: Saint Anthony, Saint William and the San Lorenzo al Bosco abbey. The Saint Francis convent is particularly important because the stories and legends related to it have given this convent an extraordinary appeal. The convent was built on a hill, not far from the historical center, and was used as a place of worship and work for the monks. The convent is square and you can still see the monks’ cells inside. The church, with its Gothic facade, is next to the convent. The convent was founded in 1222 by Saint Francis of Assisi. It is said that Saint Francis, during a visit to the territory of Apice, met Emperor Frederick II of Sweden. Legend has it that Saint Francis used only three fingers to lift a very large rock up, allowing water to flow out from underneath. The spring, called the “Miraculous Spring” still exists today and is found near the convent, while the rock with the Saint’s fingerprints, can be seen not far away. Another important part of the history of Apice is the Appiano Bridge, also known as the “Broken Bridge”, and is about 3 kilometers from Apice, near the Castel of Frederick II. The Roman bridge was originally formed by 6 arches, was 190 meters long and allowed travelers to cross the Calore river and reach the port of Brindisi through the Via Appia. The city, therefore, was an important means of communication connecting Rome to Brindisi. The various techniques used in building in the bridge are proof of at least four different construction processes that span in time from I a.C to VII d. C. At present, only the central part of the bridge can be seen. And, in the end, visits to the various ancient noble buildings in Apice are a must. Many different theories exist as to the origin of the name “Apice” and scholars still today argue over its etymological meaning. According to some, the name comes from the Latin word “Apex” and refers to its geographic location, while according to others it was given in honor of Marcus Apicius, the Roman consul, and others say that the word comes from the ancient Indo-European Lapyges people who settled in this area between the II and I millennium a.C.
La città era dunque una fondamentale via di comunicazione che collegava Roma a Brindisi. La struttura del ponte e le differenti tecniche di costruzione testimoniano almeno quattro diverse processi edilizi che coprono un arco cronologico che va dal I a.C al VII d. C. Oggi è possibile ammirare solo la parte centrale. Non possono mancare, infine, le visite ai numerosi Palazzi signorili di Apice. L’origine del nome “Apice” ha messo in discussione diverse teorie degli studiosi, che tutt’oggi contendono il significato etimologico. Secondo alcuni il termine avrebbe origini latine “Apex” e si riferisce alla collocazione geografica secondo altri invece sarebbe da attribuire a Marco Apicio, console romano, secondo altri ancora la parola prende origine dall’antico popolo degli Iapigi, la popolazione indoeuropea che si stanziò nel territorio tra il II e il I millennio a.C.

questo motivo che oggi troviamo molti edifici di culto e diverse abazie e conventi. In Contrada S. Lorenzo si trova la badia Benedettina, in contrada S. Martino, il monastero di S. Giovanni alla Rocca dei Padri Agostiniani, oltre ai conventi, sparsi, di: Sant’Antonio, San Guglielmo e l'abbazia di San Lorenzo al Bosco. Di particolare importanza è il convento di San Francesco, che tra storie e leggende avvolge tutt’oggi il luogo di un fascino straordinario. Il convento sorge su una collina, poco distante dal centro storico, ed era adibito a luogo di preghiera e di lavoro per i frati. Ha la pianta quadrata e all'interno è possibile vedere ancora le celle dei monaci. Annessa al convento c'è la chiesa, con facciata in stile gotico. La fondazione del convento risale al 1222, ed è stata attribuita proprio a San Francesco D’Assisi. Si narra che lo stesso santo, in visita nel territorio d’Apice, avrebbe conosciuto l’Imperatore Federico II di Svevia. Secondo la leggenda inoltre San Francesco avrebbe sollevato con tre dita una pietra molto grande da dove sgorgò acqua. La sorgente, chiamata “Fonte Miracolosa” esiste ancora oggi ed è vicina il convento. Impossibile infine non vedere, poco distante, una pietra con le impronte delle dita del santo. Ad arricchire la storia della città c’è il Ponte Appiano, conosciuto anche come ponte Rotto, si trova a circa 3 km da Apice, vicino il castello di Federico II. Originariamente il ponte, di epoca romana, era formato da 6 arcate, era lungo 190 metri e permetteva ai viaggiatori di attraversare il fiume Calore e raggiungere dalla via Appia il porto di Brindisi.
Auto e Treno Apice si trova in prossimità di Benevento; per raggiungerlo, la strada più semplice è l’autostrada A16. L’uscita autostradale più prossima è il casello di Benevento (uscita Castel del Lago).
Macello
Apice si trova in Campania, a 13 chilometri dalla provincia, Benevento, e a circa un’ora e mezzo da Napoli, è circondata da colli verdi e si estende su terre rigogliose, attraversate da tre corsi d’acqua: il Calore, il Miscano e l’Ufita. La particolarità e il fascino di questa città, ad ogni modo, è dato soprattutto dal tempo, che segna il confine e la divide in due, passato e presente, sotto unico cielo: Apice Vecchia e Apice Nuova. La parte Vecchia è stata colpita nel 1962, e poi nel 1980, da due importanti eventi sismici. L’ultimo in particolare, disastroso, tanto da costringere gli abitanti ad abbandonare tutto e scappare. Ed è proprio questa parte di Apice che tutt’oggi attrae turisti e studiosi da ogni parte del mondo. Camminando tra le strade del centro è possibile catturare, ancora, gli istanti eterni di un tragico terremoto. Le case sono rimaste completamente disabitate ma intatte nel loro vissuto, quasi da poter immaginare cosa stessero facendo gli abitanti nel momento esatto del disastro naturale. Ma la città, nonostante la tragedia, ha tanto da offrire ai visitatori e rappresenta un piccolo scrigno dove scoprire tantissimi monumenti. Il Castello dell'Ettore o Castello Medievale, dichiarato monumento nazionale, appartenente alla contea di Ariano, si trova nel centro storico ed è stato edificato sul punto più altro e strategico della città, sulla collina, dove è possibile controllare sia la media valle del Calore che l¹antico centro abitato. La fortezza grazie alle continue opere di ricostruzione, a causa del ter-
remoto, e di ristrutturazione, a causa anche dell¹alternarsi di diverse proprietà, è oggi in buone condizioni. L'edificio ha una pianta decagonale, è circondato da spesse mura e originariamente contava quattro bastioni, oggi visibile soltanto uno. Inoltre è possibile ammirare la cappella votiva e vedere i magnifici affreschi sulle pareti. Il Castello rappresentava all’epoca il fulcro della comunità, tanto da sviluppare intorno alla fortezza strade e borghi. Nelle vicinanze del maniero, esattamente in via Cavour, si trova il palazzo Barone, particolare per gli affreschi andati in parte perduti, durante il terremoto, secondo alcune fonti già nel 1930, e il palazzo Perriello. Ad Apice inoltre è possibile scoprire i ruderi di altri sette castelli, nelle località di Tignano e Fiego. Segno che la città era un complesso sistema difensivo e di controllo del territorio, che trovava nel Castello dell’Ettore il punto più importante. Sempre nel centro storico si possono ammirare: la Chiesa di S. Nicola, la chiesa di S.Bartolomeo e la Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. Quest’ultima, a forma di croce latina, divisa in tre navate, conserva all’interno un patrimonio storico e culturale di alto pregio. L’altare maggiore ai lati ha due angeli risalenti al 1700, in fondo alla chiesa c’è un coro ligneo e alle pareti i dipinti risalgono al XVI secolo. Nel 1400 secondo alcune fonti all’interno della chiesa era possibile contare 18 altari. Il campanile della chiesa che vediamo oggi è di recente costruzione, a causa del terremoto, infatti, l’originale è andato distrutto. Apice nel tempo è stata anche sede di diverse congregazioni religiose ed è proprio per

Another famous product are Christmas donuts (Zeppole) and “Cazzi Malati”, small round crackers made with flour and kneaded with the must pomace and then cooked in must. The aim of the Pro Loco Apice and the Town Council is to make Apice become the Garden of Italy. The typical local products are the protagonists of the open market held every Thursday and Sunday in the town.
Chiesa S. Nicola
Another strong feature of Apice, is represented by its agricultural products. The flagship promotion is called “Fair of typical local products from the three hills of Apice” with the “Festival of Gardens and INFIOR..Orto”(every year during the last Saturday and last Sunday of August). The typical local products: peppers, tomatoes and bottle gourds, raisin, wrapped up in fig leaves, apricots and dried figs. Pickled Mastantuono pears are another specialty.
