Shepherdstown Elementary School Head Teacher Cheryl Lawrence was awarded the ‘Distinguished Mountaineer,’ distinction in a surprise ceremony held last Friday morning.

The award was presented by Joy Lewis, regional representative for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin along with Del. Tiffany Lawrence, Cheryl’s daughter.

Lawrence, who will retire at the end of this school year, was honored for her 43 years of service in the Jefferson County school system.

A Jefferson County native, Lawrence grew up in Summit Point, West Virginia.

At Friday’s presentation she recounted her experience first joining the staff at Shepherdstown Elementary, where she’s worked primarily with grade five students.

Walter Dale Johnson, Jr., 63, of Martinsburg, formerly of Winchester, Virginia died Sunday, June 8, 2014, in Canterbury Center, Shepherdstown.

He was born June 2, 1951, in Winchester, the son of Walter Dale Johnson Sr. and Bettie Jane McKee Johnson.

He was married to Dorothy M. “Dottie” Johnson.

Mr. Johnson had been the owner/operator of Final Touch Auto Repair and a member of the Valley Cruisers.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a stepdaughter, Racheal Parker and Marcus Via, of Martinsburg and their children, Kimberly and Mackenzie; a stepson, Paul C. Parker Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Bunker Hill, and their, daughter Emily; two daughters, Misti Howell and Chanda Young, both of Winchester; a sister, Jennifer Lewis and her husband,

Steve, of Winchester; a nephew, Todd Lewis, of Bumpass, Virginia; and two nieces, Christi Ray-Sulser and Heather Ray, both of Winchester.

Two brothers, Harry Johnson and Ronnie Johnson, are both deceased.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Greensburg United Methodist Church, 2171 Greensburg Road, Martinsburg, with Dr. Edward Grove officiating.

Interment was private in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester.

Hazel Bernice (Creamer) Washington, 76, of Shepherdstown, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Heartland of Martinsburg. She was preceded in the death by her loving husband, Daniel Collin “Joe” Washington, who died Feb. 17, 1989.

Born in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley and Sarah K. (Washington) Creamer.

Hazel worked as a housekeeper for Canterbury Nursing Home.

She was a wonderful mother and housekeeper, who loved to bake cakes.

She was an active member of Ashbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown and was a member of the senior choir.

Hazel also was an avid Redskins and Wizards fan.

She is survived by her

son, Joey D. Washington and wife, Danielle, of Martinsburg; her brother, Bishop Charles W. Hunter, Sr., of Summit Point; granddaughter, Joelle S. Washington; cousins, Viola Hodge, Stella Washington, Thomas Creamer and a host of other cousins. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth P. Branson; and stepson, Charles T Grantham.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, at at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4257 Kearneysville Pike, Shepherdstown. Interment followed at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Helen P. Mello, 62, of Shepherdstown, died Friday, June 6, 2014, at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville.

Born Feb. 27, 1952, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of Charlotte (Housden) Weller, of Shenandoah Junction and the late Iley O. Weller.

Mrs. Mello worked at the Clarion Hotel.

She was of the Pentecostal faith.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Lewis P. Mello, at home; son, Christopher K. Bush, of Cumberland, Md., grandchildren, Juanita Bush and William K. Bush; two great-grandchildren; former husband, John K. Bush; sisters, Marie C. Hanly and husband, Martin, of West Orange, New Jersey, Elaine R. Reed and husband, William, of Ranson, and Phyllis S. Harder and husband, Terry, of Shenandoah Junction; brother, Iley Oliver Weller Jr. and wife, Janet, of Rio; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Millville Pentecostal Church, Millville, with Pastor Mark Compton officiating. Interment was at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

According to information provided by Joy Lewis, Lawrence’s past honors and accomplishments are numerous. She is a past Shepherdstown Elementary Association Treasurer, was named ‘Outstanding Young Educator’ in Jefferson County in 1981, and was twice named ‘Teacher of the Year,’ at Shepherdstown Elementary School.

Lawrence helped initiate the school’s first science fair.

She’s also helped organize book fairs, fifth grade graduation, ‘Red Bud Festival White Elephant’ sale, ‘Fun Night Halloween’ celebra-

tion, ‘Wolfgang’ candy sales, the American Heart Association’s ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ and the WVU ‘Cardiac Kids’ programs.

She has been a member of the West Virginia Education Association and the Jefferson County Education Association throughout her teaching career and currently serves on the JCEA Executive Committee and as an Association Representative.

Lawrence taught and served as a coordinator for community education classes for Jefferson County and served as a facilitator for the governor’s summer institute for teachers.

Lawrence made tearful remarks upon receiving the ‘Distinguished Mountaineer’ award on Friday.

“Not only the school, but the community just wrapped their arms around me,” she said of her tenure at Shepherdstown Elementary.

“This is a wonderful place to be.”

Cheryl’s daughter, Tiffany Lawrence also spoke Friday, acknowledging her mother’s major role in the school’s community of faculty and staff.

“I know my mom leaving is going to leave a hole, but I’m hoping you all fill it with love and support,” she said.

The registration deadline for Shepherd University Department of Music’s Summer Guitar Festival has been extended to Friday, June 20.

The four-day festival, which will take place July 17-20, will include master classes, one-on-one guitar lessons, guitar ensemble rehearsals and concerts by guest artists William Feasley, adjunct faculty member and

Jose Manuel Lezcano.

The guitar festival runs concurrently with Shepherd’s Contemporary American Theater Festival.

Nightly concerts by guest artists at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown are the festival centerpiece with a participants concert Saturday night and are free and open to the public. The festival is open to anyone

interested in studying classical guitar. The fee for junior guitarists grades 6-8 is $120 and adult guitarists grades 9-12 and adults is $220.

Frances Jean Clendening Owens

Frances Jean Clendening Owens, 77, of Stephens City, Virginia, formerly of Charles Town, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 1, 2014, surrounded by family and friends under the loving and amazing care of Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Care Center, Winchester, Virginia.

Mrs. Owens was born in 1936, in Martinsburg, the daughter of the late Charles B. and Florence M. Clendening Jr. She was a graduate of Charles Town High School and attended Shepherd College and Berkeley County School of Nursing.

Mrs. Owens was employed at Westminster-Canterbury as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), retiring in 2005. She continued her compassionate work as a private duty sitter until her long struggle with cancer ended.

She was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and was a very faithful and active member of Zion Episcopal Church, later becoming a member of St. Michael the Archangel Anglican Church in Frederick County, Virginia.

Frances waged a courageous and determined 16 year struggle with the terrible and vicious killer known as cancer and despite limitless courage, boundless faith and the very best care, eventually she could fight no more and joined family, friends and her beloved dogs in heaven.

She married Floyd P. Owens, Jr. on Aug. 10, 1959, in Winchester. He preceded her in death on May 24, 2012.

Surviving are two sons, Floyd P. Owens, III, of Ranson and Mark F. Owens, of Inwood; two granddaughters, Ashley Gulina and husband, Mark, of Rancho Cucamonga, California and Emily Owens, of Inwood; and brother, Donald W. Clendening and wife, Alice, of

Charles Town.

Four brothers, Charles B. Clendening III, John A. Clendening, Paul B. Clendening and James R. Clendening and one sister, Helen E. Clendening, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, June 16, at St. Michael the Archangel Anglican Church, Frederick County.

Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County.

Sharing a mother’s pride

As I write this week, I am preparing to head to my youngest child’s 8th grade graduation ceremony. I am still trying to figure out where the time went that indicates she has completed middle school. I search in vain for the time that has passed that allowed me to witness my oldest child graduate from Fairmont State University a few weeks ago. I see my son working at a job everyday when he should still be playing Little League or at least baseball for Jefferson High. My second daughter is on the verge of driving at 15 and is asking all the time to get the dreaded “permit.”

In my mind, little time has passed since each of these miracles in my life were brought home in a car seat and unable to fend for themselves. Now, most of the time, they don’t need me unless it’s for money, a ride,

Tree Benefits: Good Municipal Economics

In my line of work I come across tree lovers of all types and each has a unique reason for their arboreal passion.

Sometimes it’s personal — they feel a positive aura around trees or they have family history rooted (pun intended) in an old oak on their property. And sometimes it is an awestruck appreciation of how trees open our eyes to the beauty of Mother Nature.

But you don’t have to be a tree lover to appreciate the value of trees. Many of us understand their importance from a practical view — shade keeps us cool, or a screen of Leyland cypress has saved our relationship with neighbors. My favorite practical reason? I like to breathe.

In recent decades science has provided us with even more practical reasons to appreciate trees. The USDA Forest Service’s Center for Urban Forest Research has compiled a good list of these ‘tree benefits’ and here is a sampling:

I listen daily as my little Polly calls with information on job interviews from her new home in Newell, W. Va. (where is that, anyway?). I can’t quite grip the fact that she doesn’t live with us anymore.

I will see Samantha, today, give a speech leaving Harpers Ferry Middle School where she has served as student council president this year. A young lady in the making—along with Maggie who bridges the gap to sophomore year in high school—they have grown too quickly. Allen working in Washington, D.C. this week laying hard wood floors until nearly midnight had me wanting to call the boss and say, “It’s too late for him to be out.” But, it’s the grown up life; it’s responsibility.

And responsible they are. As much

as I will always worry about them, as their mother, they have been raised well. They treat others with respect, work hard and love home, family and the Lord. It is gratifying to see that what we tried to instill in them has worked, despite the many times we wondered if all our efforts were in vain.

What I learn each day is that I should never take a moment of their lives for granted. Despite getting frustrated with them at times; sometimes even downright angry; every second I have with them is a blessing to my life.

They make me happier than any of them will ever know even if it’s sometimes hard to let them grow up. Making a public statement is the least I can do to show them how much I love them and how very proud I am to be their mother.

* One hundred trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other pollutants per year, and they control storm water runoff by catching about 139,000 gallons of rainwater. * Tree-filled neighborhoods lower levels of domestic violence and are safer and more sociable. * In tree-lined commercial districts, shoppers stay longer, visit more often and spend more. * Each large front yard tree adds 1 percent to the house sales price, and large specimen trees can add 10 percent to property value.

Such facts allow us to shift from a soft view of simply appreciating trees to attaching hard monetary values to trees and their functions. Armed with this new information many municipalities around the country are discovering that they can save a lot of GREEN by going green. What they have shown over and again is that while planting and maintaining public trees is not cheap, the economic benefits far outweigh this cost.

Generally speaking, for every dollar invested in tree

infrastructure (this includes planting, maintenance, removal, sidewalk repair, arborist staff — everything) that municipality will receive 3 dollars’ worth of services that the tax payers would otherwise have to cover. A specific example cited by the Forest Service shows that one healthy 20 year old public tree costs about $36 per year in maintenance, but the benefits provided come to around $96.

Extrapolate this to a realistic scenario and this means that one hundred public trees over 40 years provide $380,000 in benefits and only set the city back $148,000. That comes

to a net benefit of $232,000.

It is clear why municipalities have shifted from seeing trees simply as ‘fringe benefits’ that only make it into the budget when there are surplus funds or are wrapped in as a small part of the public works department. To the contrary, cities and towns have learned that, in addition to creating a pleasant atmosphere, a tree canopy is an economic necessity that frees up taxpayer dollars for other essentials like education, police and road maintenance.

Thoughts from a hospital bed: Don’t overdo it

Strange as it seems it appears as if the computer and the nurse are having a conversation. Rule number two make sure the nurse is getting the facts right as she enters your information into the computer.

The third thing I am going to talk about is the kindness that each of the caregivers give you. From the doctors to the nurses and the time spent dealing with you—they give back tender loving care. It’s like you were the only per-

At 1:30 p.m., Ted Alexander, Antietam National Battlefield Historian, will deliver the keynote address, “McCausland’s Raid and the Burning of Chambersburg.”

He will also be signing his book, Antietam: The Bloodiest Day. Copies will be available for purchase.

Lunch choices will be up to the participants.

Jefferson County teachers will receive staff development credit, as listed on the Jefferson County School District’s staff development website.

On Monday, June 23, participants will meet at Fisherman’s Hall, 312 South West Street (corner of South West and Academy Streets) in Charles Town from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Doug Perks, Jefferson County Museum historian, will set the stage for Jefferson County 1864 with a description of key events and personalities in the county. Other speakers will be: Jim Glymph on Stereoviews of Harpers Ferry, Frank Surdu on Civil War Ironclads, Don Watts on the Genealogy of a Civil War Family and John Bagladi on The Search for John Reid.

Participants will be on their own for lunch.

On Wednesday, June 25, the seminar will meet at the

From the time you wake up in the morning to the time you turn in at night someone is always at you side. At 10 p.m. you get your last meds of the day, or so you think.

Just as you are nodding of there will be a tapping at your door, a timid voice will say, “I am sorry to have to

disturb you but I have to get your vital signs.” This is the start of the night shift. About 2 a.m. someone else comes in to wake you. About 4 a.m. another person comes to check on you and ask if I need anything. About 6 a.m. the nurse comes in to give you your morning meds.

Rule number three is a life saver. Learn to take short naps in between the treatment plan that has been worked out for you.

The next rule is an important one. Don’t forget to thank the people who are trying to help you. Try and be kind and even if you feel bad, try and be pleasant.

When you think about it they have other people to work with so be patient with them.

Finally one last word, stay healthy my friends. The biggest lesson I have learned is to try hard to take care of yourself first. The life you save may be your own.

Shepherdstown: Host to Ghosts

Last week broadcast journalist Pat Lalama and producer Aaron Burke visited Shepherdstown to explore its unique history of paranormal activity as part of a potential television documentary series.

Setting up shop Wednesday morning in the Entler Hotel, the pair listened to experiences from more than 30 local residents who can attest to otherworldly experiences.

Traveling from Los Angeles, California on Tuesday evening, Lalama and Burke organized several interviews and tours of the town with assistance of Shepherdstown Visitors Center Director, Jan Hafer.

Lalama explained that she was first drawn to Shepherdstown after spotting Shepherdstown Police Chief David Ransom, who spends some of his free time as a paranormal investigator, in a Smithsonian documentary chronicling an Opera House performance last year.

“I don’t know if I believe in ghosts or not, but we take the fact that people do very seriously,” Lalama said.

Though the Chief was Lalama’s initial draw, both she and Burke said their interest is really in telling the story of a whole community and its ghostly happenings.

“It’s all about the citizens,” Lalama said.

“We want the whole town involved.”

Historians Jim Price and Jim Surkamp were on hand to facilitate Wednesday morning’s discussion, framing the collection of stories in actual historical events.

“There’s a historical ele-

ment that really backs up these stories,” Burke said.

Lalama and Burke said they heard a range of stories from locations all around town and on Shepherd University’s campus.

Stories were shared about popular places like Shepherdstown Sweet Shop, the Shepherdstown Middle School and even sightings along Flowing Springs Road.

Hafer said many of the residents’ stories built on one another creating patterns and offering real legitimacy to the experiences.

“There’s a good interactive vibe to everything,” Burke said.

“You get the sense that its a large family.” he said of the community.

After taking an official ghost tour of Shepherdstown Wednesday evening, the pair returned to the west coast with plans to continue researching the possibility of a project.

Outdoor cooking from an expert

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will offer one of its outdoor cooking classes in Jefferson County on Saturday, June 28. The class will be held on a farm in Kearneysville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It will be led by master naturalist Clark Dixon. It will provide instruction and practice in cooking outdoors without pots and pans or kitchen utensils.

The class is open to anyone who is interested but participation will be limited and pre-registration by June 14 will be required. There will also be a fee of $10 to cover supplies and materials for instruction.

Shepherdstown’s first communitywide yard and tag sale is set for this Saturday. The sale will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The sale is being sponsored by Shepherdstown’s BEST (Better Experiences for Shepherdstown Tourists) Group, with the support of the Town Council. The idea is to provide a fun community event that will also be an excellent opportunity to attract new visitors to the town.

Residents and organizations are being asked to set up tables in their yards or alleys, selling they no longer need but others may want, such as antiques, accessories, furniture, tools and books.

Businesses are being asked to set up tag-sale tables in front of their stores.

Residents who live outside the town limits can set up tables on the section of King Street in front of Town Hall.

This section of the street will be closed to vehicle traffic, and anyone who lives within the Shepherdstown zip code may use it to display sale items. All who do so must supply their own tables and be responsible for setting up and taking down their displays.

Outgoing Shepherd Board of Governors chair honored; board approves programs, employee raises

Gat Caperton was recognized during the June 5 meeting of the Shepherd University Board of Governors for his three years of service as the board chair.

President Suzanne Shipley noted that Shepherd University and the board have benefited from Caperton’s business and marketing acumen. “As board chair, Gat’s signature accomplishment was Shepherd’s master plan,

for which he provided insight and guidance,” she said. “We appreciate his exceptional leadership skills as well as his enthusiasm for and advocacy on behalf of Shepherd.”

Caperton, who is the owner of Gat Creek, a handmade furniture company located in Berkeley Springs, has served on Shepherd’s Board of Governors for eight years.

Mark Rudolph was elected as the incoming board chair, with Marcia Brand to serve as vice chair and John Younis to serve as secretary.

Audit committee members named include board members Holly McCall and John Beatty, with Younis serving as chair. Chad Robinson was sworn in as the newest member of the board.

A 1.5 percent pay increase was approved for employees and a $1,000 supplement to full professors to help equalize the salary compression experienced by longtime senior faculty. The funding for the raises is coming from budget reductions combined with a salary appropriation from the state.

The board approved new programs including two emphasis areas (business and social issues) for the Regents bachelor of arts degree, a nutrition minor, and a legal studies concentration in political science.

AHA! sponsors Gil Narro Garcia solo show in July

Local sculptor and winner of the 2013 Artomatic@Jefferson People’s Choice Award, Gil Narro Garcia invites the public to experience “Interpreting Nature,” a visual installation that will dazzle the eyes, engage the senses and cause a smile. Opening this July, 2014 in the Fire Hall Gallery, 108 N. George St., Charles Town, the Arts & Humanities Alliance (AHA)-sponsored exhibit continues through July 29.

The public is invited to attend the free opening reception on July 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.

An avid gardener since childhood and from a family of gardeners, landscape designers, and ranchers, Gil Narro Garcia’s interest in nature, the environment, and human relationship to its color, textures and forces is longstanding.

The transition to creating art was an easy one for him, he says. “I have been creating art in my gardens during a span of over 50 years. I am, nevertheless, an emerging artist in the formal sense.”

Gil Narro Garcia is attracted to natural objects and forms and combines them to create works that tell a story.

His large outdoor sculptures,

for example, add dimension and texture to garden settings. They are also utilitarian. He started making wild grape vine spheres as a way to hold up bleeding hearts, peonies and other longlegged bloomers.

He is currently working on a very large installation of hollowed tree trunks that are lit up from within to highlight their forms, openings, and arrested decaying states.

He is also working on a series of trees that have died, but remained intact. “I have painted them in very powerful colors to highlight their branch structure and forms.

They take on new life as sculptures,” he says.

His indoor sculptures, on the other hand, are installed in and contained by acrylic boxes. The art exists within boundaries, but each piece conjures a humorous message or makes commentary on the foibles of man. “The sculptures might begin with a simple branch, bird nest or part of a tree trunk,” he says, “but, I transform them into dynamically visual constructions with various embellishments and ornamentation.

They spring to a very different life!”

A retired federal civil servant, with academic training in the life sciences and

anthropology, Gil Narro Garcia is co-owner of Painted Images, Inc., a design arts studio in Harpers Ferry.

A member of AHA, the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, Berkeley Arts Council, Washington Sculptors Group, and the Baltimore Sculptors Group, Gil Narro Garcia has exhibited previously in the Fire Hall Gallery, the Washington Street Gallery, Touchstone Gallery in DC, Artomatic@Jefferson, Hyattstown Art Mill, and Ricco Gallery in Shepherdstown.

Town Run a natural part of Shepherdstown’s history

It gathers clean waters from just south of Shepherdstown. Much of the cool and clear water comes from six natural springs, but as many as 20 scattered sources feed the Town Run. Of the sources of the never-flooded, never-dry Town Run, a spring house on the grounds of Morgans Grove park is probably the most-noticed site by the public.

Once its waters are joined together as a narrow stream, the Town Run moves leisurely northward in the direction of Shepherdstown.

Never very deep, never very wide, the little ribbon of water comes into view of the Shepherdstown Elementary School. It’s a little wider there and moving at a rate that says: “It may be the rapid-paced 21st century, but I can be enjoyed the same as back in the late 1700’s when harness makers, blacksmiths, tanners and brickmakers stood along the dirt roads

that are now German Street and Princess Street.”

Just behind the elementary school, the Town Run has invited cattails and other reeds to grow in its silted bottom.

However, once it leaves the school children and their outdoor playground behind, it is more confined by its banks and slowly courses on through the few backyards dotting the street that leads down to the post office.

At the post office, it is told its way by the concrete walls that keep it in place.

Many a youngster has been given his first fishing lesson at those unassuming walls. Children have been befriended by “The Run” and its once fish-filled waters. No expensive gear is necessary there behind the post office.

Only an eager-to-learn attitude and a willingness to enjoy the first pleasures of casting a worm or small crankbait into the slow-flowing water.

Town Run moves under Washington Street and then on past the Jefferson Security Bank where it encounters its first alley.

Once across German Street, the limestone walls of Shepherd University (once the Normal School, Shepherd State Teachers College, and Shepherd College) held the faster moving waters between its confines. The stream bed there has limestone rocks of many sizes.

Those rocks sometimes hold in place wildflowers of substantial color as compared with the slightly gray waters of “The Run”.

Between German Street and Princess Street, the waters say “hello” to the Little House just to one side of McMurran Hall and Reynolds Hall on the Shepherd campus.

Moving under Princess Street and a business at the corner of East High Street, it’s under High Street and on toward its final steep plunge toward the Potomac River.

Moss-covered rocks are afforded a perfect view under the canopy of decades-old trees as they look up at the Thomas Shepherd Gristmill built about 1738. A large

mill wheel was added to that building before the streets of Shepherdstown were paved or horsedrawn carriages became extinct.

Past the gristmill, the stream moves by the Mecklenburg Tobacco Warehouse and its massive stone walls.

The warehouse is the last standing structure that can tell the history of what trade and commerce went on by the Potomac through the 1700’s and 1800’s.

Where the Town Run empties its waters into the Potomac, it gets a last look at the stone piers of what was once a 600-foot long covered bridge that led over to the Maryland side and the

area below the Ferry Hill Plantation. That bridge was erected in the mid 1800’s and later fell victim to floods and the burning torches of Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War. A modern-day boat launch and small parking area on North Princess Street are neighbors of the now-ending Town Run. From out at Morgans Grove on past the elementary school and post office to the Shepherd campus and Tobacco Warehouse, the Town Run has been telling fables or historical stories longer than much-acclaimed town historian Jim Price — and that’s saying something.

Before the Environmental Protection Agency and other protectionist groups saw the coming dangers of manmade products being discarded into the waters and air, the Town Run played host to thousands of car washings.

There to the side of Sam Skinner’s corner lot (now the home of the bank), Shepherd College students with their shoestring budgets parked their roadsters and Studebakers in “The Run” and cleaned them. Many an enterprising Shepherdstown resident from every walk of life used the Town Run to wash their car.

That practice is no more.

When the now detergentfree water leaves its first alley, it moves just as quietly through several more backyards and under New Street before getting to German Street and its next underground passage.

Several little-noticed grates are located on either side of German Stareet. Once upon a time those grates served as fishing spots for boys like the Shipley twins, Ruby Swope and John Lucas.

Artist exhibits at The Bridge Gallery Community Art Sale Artist Angus White will exhibit water colours of his travels at The Bridge Gallery in Shepherdstown this weekend, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.

In this annual event, more than 600 rubber duckies will be fighting their way for the prestigious winning spot at the end of the race. The top three ducks to reach the finish line first, as well as the last duck to cross the line, will win monetary prizes for their sponsos. The event is scheduled this year for July 19.

The Contemporary American Theater Festival, founded in 1991 and hosted by Shepherd University, returns for its 24thseason July 11-Aug. 3.The festival, which features “America’s newest plays in West Virginia’s oldest town,” is dedicated to professionally producing five new American plays each season.

Managing Director James McNeel shared, This year, we’ve refocused on the five plays rather than ancilliary programs and events. That’s always been the core of who we are.”

According to McNeel, the CATF’s Hostel Youth! program will continue for its third consecutive year this season.

The program is open to youth ages 14-18, and gives them an opportunity to watch the plays, attend workshops and hone their theater skills.

Always community-minded, the small town takes every opportunity to assist each other and address local needs, while offering unique events. The fifth annual Identity Crisis, set for Aug. 9 provides a reason to stroll the red carpet dressed as a Hollywood star or famous rock musician. The gathering serves to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.

Man’s best friend is important in Shepherdstown.

Honoring the love between man and his dog, the Better Experiences for Shepherdstown Tourists (BEST) group has established the annual Dogfest, slated for Aug., 910 this year. Offering everything from a 5K to dog shows and traning demonstrations, canines and their owners will enjoy a funfilled weekend. This year’s event adds a sheep herding demonstration, that will feature trainers from the Virginia Border Collies Association. BEST member and emcee for this year’s event, Meredith Wait, said she is

very excited about this addition to the lineup of activities. Another new feature during this year’s show is an Americna Kennel Club rare dog breed show, she said.

There is never a shortage of something to do in Shepherdstown. Walking along historic trails, visiting one-of-a-kind shops, joining in the Thursday night jam sessions at O’Hurley’s General Store or picnicking overlooking the river at Rumsey Park where James Rumsey ran the first successful steam engine in 1787— the opportunities are endless.

Sporting events at Shepherd University, concerts, theater productions and more can be found within the boundaries of this contender in Outside Magazine’s “American’s Best Place to Live” contest.

At 6 p.m. children 8 and older may stay for the robotics program. Using household materials and simple electric currents, we will create a variety of robots such as a hoverbot and robo-bug!

Wildlife Ambassadors will present “Creepy Crawlies” for all ages on Tuesday, July 1 at 11:30 a.m. (Location: Shepherdstown Elementary’s Gym, 662 S. Church St.) Discover poisonous and venomous creatures as well as those awake at night.

Meet Flower Lorenzo, the “Fossil Lady,” on Tuesday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. (Location: Shepherdstown Elementary’s Gym, 662 S. Church St.). All ages will get to look at and touch the different types of fossils in her amazing collection, and she will share about how she finds fossils, and how to tell if a rock might be a fossil.

“Turning Around America” will be set up behind the Shepherdstown Library (100 East German Street) from Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Children 8 and older, teens, and adults are all welcome. Two mobile workshops will provide guidance and materials for the following classes: Stop Animation will meet 9 a.m. to noon, for 5 days: Wed. 7/16, Thurs. 7/17, Fri. 7/18, Sat. 7/19, and Sun. 7/20. Make a Simple Book is offered on Sat. 7/19 to ages 8 and older. There is space for 10 people during each hour: you may sign up for 1 to 2 p.m., 2 to 3 p.m., or 3 to 4 p.m. Each student needs to bring a cereal box to use for their Japanese-style book’s covers. Students will be using a paper cutter.

“Fizz, Slurp, Splat!” will be a variety of gross science experiments at the Shepherdstown Train Station (100 Audrey Egle Dr.) on Thursday, July 24 at 5 p.m. Ages 4 and older are invited to make creations such as fake snot, a belching balloon, and slimy DNA strands, while learning the chemistry behind these amazing experiments.

Ages 18 and under are invited to visit the Shepherdstown Library to pick up a reading log in June or July. Children who read library books (or are read to) may return their completed reading logs starting August 4, to receive wonderful prizes from generous local businesses! Shepherd’s Institute of Environmental and Physical Sciences hosted electric vehicle group

Shepherd University faculty members from the Institute of Environmental and Physical Sciences (IEPS) welcomed 36 electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids, including 13 Tesla Model S sedans and three Tesla Roadsters, to Shepherdstown on Saturday, June 7.

The vehicles were taking part in the West Virginia EV Sociability Run (www.pluginrally.org). The newly installed electric vehicle charging stations at Shepherd’s IEPS Renewable Energy Demonstration Zone (RED Zone) allowed EV owner Rick Rohn of Martinsburg to convince the

group to make Shepherd and Shepherdstown a destination on their journey.

Dr. Jeff Groff, assistant professor of physics, and Dr. Ed Snyder, professor of environmental and physical sciences and chair of Shepherd’s IEPS, hosted an open house of the RED Zone for the EV enthusiasts highlighting the integration of the charging stations with renewable energy systems.

While explaining the RED Zone systems and showing his 3D-printed replacement parts for the charging stations, Groff used the RED Zone to impress upon the EV owners the importance of utilizing renewable ener-

gy in conjunction with electric vehicles. The electricity needed to charge an EV’s batteries comes from somewhere and in West Virginia, this likely means coal-fueled power plants, according to Groff. He stressed that without renewable energy in the mix, there is significantly less environmental benefit to driving an EV in West Virginia.

With the EV charging stations in place on campus, Shepherd and Shepherdstown have become an EV destination and hopefully Teslas and other electric vehicles will become a more commonplace sight in town, said Groff.

Steve Warner to offer songwriting and nature camp

Nature has been the inspiration for thousands of songs. Just think of how many songs reference the sun and moon! Award-winning Shepherdstown songwriter, Steve Warner, will help kids tap into their creativity in the beautiful surroundings at Cool Spring near Charles Town.

“The Hills Are Alive With Song” will be be offered weeks of July 28 and Aug. 4 from 1 - 4 p.m. as part of Craftwork’s Camp Cool Spring summer programming. Warner’s camps are for kids 8 to 13.

Kids will learn about song form, structure, lyric and melody in way that will empower them to write something special. Campers do not need any prior music skill or knowledge, just a willingness to express their ideas. Those who play instruments or sing are

encouraged to share their talents with the class.

Campers will explore types of songs and what makes certain ones so memorable.

Participants will also have an opportunity to sample instruments for accompaniment…guitar, ukelele, mandolin, even a hand drum.

Campers will work as a team to write a song as a group and perform it for parents and guests on the last day of camp. Each week will be somewhat tailored to the make up of the group and there will be plenty of time for one on one mentoring. Registration is available online at www.wvcraftworks.org.

Maiden selected for promotion

The U.S. Navy announced June 5 in a fleet wide message that Thomas Patrick Maiden, Jr., has been selected for promotion to the grade of Commander. He is an intelligence officer assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction.

When not serving in the U.S. Navy, Tom Maiden serves as the CEO of Insurance Outfitters, a familyowned independent insurance agency in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Walter, a pitcher, was then selected in the 28th round by Oakland.

Four other Mountaineers, all with remaining college eligibility, had been selected in earlier rounds.

Outfielder Bobby Boyd went to Houston in the eighth round and pitcher Harrison Musgrave was taken by Colorado in the eighth round. Both could sign professional contracts by mid-July or return to WVU for their senior years in 2015.

Pitcher John Means was selected by Baltimore in the 11th round and pitcher Sean Carley went to the New York Yankees in the 14th round.

Both pitchers have the same options as Boyd and Musgrave and must decide by the end of the third week of July whether to remain an amateur and return to Morgantown for 2015 or sign a professional contract and begin play in some team’s minor league farm system.

Two players signed by Coach Randy Mazey for next year were also drafted. Left-

handed pitcher Greg Maisto from McLennan CC was selected in the 16th round by Tampa Bay and high school senior left-hander Caleb Ferguson was taken in the 38th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mountaineers went 12 in the Big 12 tournament after losing their final seven games of the regular season.

In consecutive road series, the Mountaineers lost three times to Texas Tech and Kansas.

The seventh loss was inflicted

by Maryland. All three of those teams were involved in

the 64-team NCAA tournament with Texas Tech reaching the College World Series and Maryland reaching the last game of best-of-three Super Regional series against Virginia.

Also, Texas of the Big 12 defeated Houston twice in a Super Regional hosted by the Longhorns and is going to the College World Series.

Oklahoma State and Texas Christian University are two other Big 12 teams that were participants in the NCAA tournament.

Washington falls to Rain gardens topic eventual baseball for gardener group champion Hurricane

The three West Virginia high school baseball champions are Hurricane, Bridgeport and the Man Hillbillies.

Hurricane topped Washington, 3-1 in one of the Class AAA semifinal games and was joined in the bigschool finals by Riverside, a 3-2 winner over Wheeling Park.

The Redskins from Putnam County scored their three runs against Washington on a passed ball, RBI single from Tate Brock and a wild pitch. Hurricane managed three hits off Washington starter and loser, Jared Silva. Silva closed out his senior year with a 7-2 record. He went five innings against the Redskins, allowing three hits, four walks, hitting three batters and committing two costly errors himself.

J.T. Rogoszewski was Hurricane’s winning pitcher.

The junior right-hander allowed only four hits, but did walk four against the Patriots. Rogoszewski fanned only three. Washington completed its season with a 23-5 overall record after making the school’s first state tournament appearance in its six-year history.

Hurricane tamed Riverside, 9-2, in the state championship game.

Bridgeport had a 3-1 win over Chapmanville in the Class AA semifinals and then defeated Independence, 5-2 in the state championship game. Independence had stopped Fairmont Sr., 11-6, in a semifinal game.

Man won its first-ever state championship in any boy’s or girl’s sport when it beat Clarksburg Notre Dame, 12-10, in 10 innings in the Class A finale. The Hillbillies stopped St. Marys, 3-1, in the small-school semifinals while Notre Dame blasted Gilmer County, 15-6.

What is a Rain Garden?

Rain gardens are a beautiful and colorful way for homeowners to conserve, filter and manage storm water. A typical rain garden is a shallow, constructed depression that is planted with deep-rooted native plants and grasses. It is located in your landscape to receive runoff from hard surfaces such as a roof, a patio or

a driveway. A rain garden will slow down the rush of water from these hard surfaces, allow it time to naturally infiltrate into the ground and recharge the local groundwater table. Rain gardens can be an inexpensive, lovely addition to a landscape and offer an environmentally sound solution to stormwater runoff.

GEG is an informal network of avid gardeners from Jefferson, Morgan and Berkeley counties and the nearby areas of Maryland and Virginia. Its purpose is to bring together people who share an interest in the practical, hands-on challenges and pleasures of gardening.

Members are young and old; men and women; retired and working people; professional gardeners, master gardeners and beginners. The gardening interests of GEG members are just as diverse: wildflowers to roses, fruit trees to mushrooms, water gardening to Xeriscaping.

GEG members meet at 9 a.m., usually on the third Saturday of the month, April through October. The group welcomes new members.
