A Precision-Driven Passion: How Dr. Robert J. Singer’s Neurosurgical Mind Gave Rise to Waterstone Guitar Co. In the world of music, passion often springs from life’s most unexpected corners. For Dr. Robert J. Singer, a renowned neurosurgeon, that passion was not only a lifelong love of guitars but also an appreciation for precision, design, and craftsmanship qualities he mastered through years of delicate brain surgeries. In 2002, that unlikely fusion of surgical discipline and musical artistry gave birth to Waterstone Guitar Co., an American instrument brand that now stands as a beacon of innovation in the world of guitars and basses. Dr. Singer’s journey from medicine to music isn’t just unique, it’s foundational to Waterstone’s identity. As a specialist in neurovascular surgery, skull base surgery, and brain tumor treatment, Singer trained and worked at some of the most prestigious institutions in the United States, including Stanford University Medical Center, Vanderbilt, and Massachusetts General Hospital. But outside of the operating room, his mind would often drift toward a very different kind of anatomy: the structure and soul of a finely crafted guitar. His fascination began early. A musician at heart, Singer spent his youth playing multiple instruments and began collecting guitars as far back as 1978, with a growing obsession for vintage models from Hofner, Gibson, Rickenbacker, and Hoyer. Over time, his collection became both a personal treasure trove and a classroom a way to dissect the nuances of design, tone, and build. After achieving board certification in neurosurgery, Singer took on an entirely new kind of project. With the encouragement of fellow musician and oral surgeon Matt Eichen, he began designing guitars at his kitchen table. It was a natural outlet combining his steady hands, his trained eye, and a mind wired for structure and complexity. These early designs weren’t simply inspired by existing models; they were reinterpretations, engineered for modern musicians but steeped in vintage soul.
