President’s Welcome the past. Firstly I would like to welcome all members, life members, patrons & associates of NWCC & NWJCC to the 2015/16 cricket season. It is great to see so many faces return to the club for another year, and we welcome some new faces this season. We are grateful enough to have retained all of our sponsors and it is important that we continue to support our sponsors by frequenting their businesses whenever we can. From the Seniors’ perspective, we have strengthened our focus on winning the CCCA Club Championship, the grand prize for the best performing club throughout the season. Once again Club Coach Glenn Rowlands is at the helm this season. Glenn has a vast amount of coaching experience and knowledge, and is striving to implement a more structured approach to training than in

Lastly, yet most importantly, we are looking forward to another season being played in the spirit of cricket as we have done for so many years. Going hand in hand with this, as a club we aim to maximise enjoyment from the game and with our teammates. I strongly encourage attending our post match functions at The Grange Hotel following each day’s play. Have a drink, a snag and a chat with your club mates with a chance at taking home a prize. Good luck out on the field! Go Narara!! Mark Smith.

overs remaining. Unfortunately, the less said about the last 5 overs the better. Their number 10 carted 30 off about 12 pills and ripped the game away from us in the last over.

Round One saw the first grade side travel to Harry Moore oval in Toukley to take on Northern Power in a 45 over game (apparently 50 is just too much these days, but I digress). We’ve had some very close games against this mob in the past and expected something similar. The day got off to a solid start with captain Mark Smith winning the toss and electing to bat. Our opening pair of Matt Friend (19) and the Super Scottish import Chris ‘Casper’ Brockwell (26) got us off to a very decent start. A couple of decent partnerships got us to a handy 2-115, but unfortunately, as has happened far too often in the past we lost too many wickets back to back. If it wasn’t for young Jack ‘1D’ Shelley (26*) with some lusty blows towards the end, we would have struggled to put a half decent total on the board. As it stood though, 181 on a pretty slow outfield was handy, and definitely enough if we bowled well. Things started off well for the Lions with Kyle Jordan snaring one of their openers early on. However, things turned a little sour, as we struggled to hit our spots and they took full advantage. They rapidly moved from 1-17 to 1-80 odd and the game was slipping away. In came Brocky (3-14, off 9) who produced a fine spell of left arm spin on a slow track to get us back in the game. We really knuckled down through the middle overs and reduced them to 9-148, with only a handful of

Round Two Lisarow vs. Narara – Sohier Park Round two saw the flagship side travel to Lisarow for a two-day game against undoubtedly the strongest team in the competition. Day one didn’t start off as we would have liked, losing the toss on a hot day with a good track and a fast outfield. It was always going to take a big effort from the boys. We started off well with the ball, with Spanner knocking over the only bloke on the field larger than Narara’s vicecaptain. Things took a rather nasty turn after that as Lisarow rolled to 1-122 with some quality batsmen scoring runs. Things really could have got out of hand as the opposition reached 3-212 on a very batting friendly day. However enough can’t be said for the effort and resilience the boys showed to peg them back to be all out 286, with the last 6 wickets only accounting for 25 runs. Special mention to Mark McLachlan who produced a fantastic spell of bowling to take figures Brothers Jack and Michael Shelley playing togerher in first grade for the first time.

of 5-44 from 13. One would say Macca will be used heavily this season, particularly in the absence of Andy Murray and Andy Ryan, who have taken approximately 8.6 million wickets for the club over last 30-40 years. Another special mention goes to Mick Shelley who produced a very fine spell of bowling, whose figures of 1-38 off 16 don’t necessarily reflect how well he bowled, particularly in his second spell when we were getting dominated. The new opening pair of Friendy and Chris ‘50+’ Brockwell saw off a very dangerous 9 overs at the end of the day against the two quickest bowlers in NSW Country cricket (no exaggeration this time). Week two greeted us with Sohier Park’s grass growing to approximately double the length in the past week, happy days. No excuse should be given for our batting display though. Only a few of our batsman really applied themselves, with Mark McLachlan heads and shoulders (possibly all body parts) ahead of everyone else. Watching Macca bat is an absolute joy (think Mark Waugh with a better pull shot) and the 35 he scored was probably worth 55-60 there last week. Overall though, a very disappointing day for the first grade side, as we were rolled for 120 on a flat track. Very proud of the way we came back into the game midway through the first

week, however our batting demands more application if we are to reach the heights this club deserves.

Who is your favourite international cricket player? AB De Villiers. Do you have a favourite Australian cricket player? Matthew ‘Bart/Tolo’ Friend. If you could have any player come and do a training run with the team who would it be? Chris Gayle. What do you think is your personal cricketing highlight so far? Playing for Scotland u13s and u15s level. How quick can you eat a Paddle Pop? I don’t know what they are! Favourite Food? Any chocolate or chicken. Favourite Movie(s)? Midnight Express, Pulp Fiction. What is the strangest thing you have ever seen on a cricket field? A player once deliberately fell over in his delivery stride and fake injury to try and get a game called off. It was pretty strange. When not playing cricket, what else do you like doing? Sleep. I love sleeping.

from lucky edges that didn’t go to hand or flew overs the slips. I changed up the bowling early on giving spin a try to stop the batters momentum but even this didn’t seem to faze them as they continued their quick scoring, then I brought on one of the new guys to the club Kyle Frost and he had an immediate impact with a wicket from his second delivery.

Lisarow Community Bank®Branch

With the Spirit 2/117 at drinks, wickets in hand meant their batting style did not change and every bowler I brought on after that was given the treatment as we were regularly retrieving the ball from the boundary and beyond. Kyle Frost was the pick of the bowlers with 2-5 from his 2 overs. We started off our innings in poor fashion losing one of our openers Pete Stuckey early on. Neil Dixon and Andrew Friend then set about righting the ledger with a good 37 run partnership with some sensible play and calculated aggressive hitting. Jeff Monin then came out and another solid partnership developed between he and Neil of 39 runs before Neil fell for a well-

compiled 50 and we were looking okay at 3/76. I then put on another good partnership with Nick Lulham of 25 runs before I fell on 37 runs from a good caught and bowled effort from one of their young opening bowlers. We finally closed out our innings well short on 5/148 off our 35 overs but there were some positives that came out of our batting as we managed to put together some good partnerships. Narara v The Entrance - Round two Once again another hot day greeted us and I won the toss and chose to bowl again much to the disgust of most of the players with the thought of another long hot day in the field like round one.

not just a “tonker. Luckily this time it worked out for me as we quickly had The Entrance one down for not many runs as Lucas Sadler 1/28 off 9 overs and myself both bowled tight opening spells not giving the batters any room to free their arms. They then put together a good partnership before Nick Lulham picked up his first wicket for the club just before tea. After tea we picked up another wicket courtesy of newcomer to the team Sean Wise who also picked up his first wicket for the club and they were 3/64. Scott and Kyle bowled good tight spells without any luck so I went back to experience and Jeff Monin 2/17 off 7 overs picked up a couple of handy wickets as The Entrance lost 3 wickets with the score still on 129. I came on late to partner Monin and managed to snare a few late wickets to end up with figures of 5/29 off 12 overs as The Entrance managed to lose another 3 quick wickets with the score on 134 all out. So with 26 overs left in the day we had a go a reducing the target, Jeff Monin and Neil Dixon batted well and put together a handy partnership before Neil fell on 49 with the score on 73. Isreal Coggan then looked good with Monin before he fell to a trap and got out on the 3rd last ball of the day for a well compiled 14 which included a lot of sensible blocks which shows that Izzy can bat sensibly and is

So at the end of the day 1 we were in a strong position of 2/91. Heading into day 2 I was confident that we could knock of the remaining runs quite quickly and have a go at an unlikely outright victory for us, but with the early run out of Jeff Monin on his favourite score of 22 my plans changed. Sumbling to 5/128, a steady partnership between Bella Fitzgibbon (18*) and Lucas 16 got us over the line and I declared leaving 48 overs left in the day for a result. So back in The Entrance went and I opened with a new partnership of Kyle Frosty and Sean Wise who both impressed with the new ball. Wisey showed genuine pace and Kyle stuck to his line and length. I came on first change and picked up an early wicket as we had The Entrance 1/18 but then all the luck went their way as I managed to drop a caught and bowled. They then lost a couple of quick wickets as both Neil 1/16 off 3 overs and myself snared a scalp

and they were 4/79 and we were looking in the box seat. Unfortunately they put together 2 good partnerships and ended up declaring on 6/156 as I picked up the last two wickets finishing with 4/40 off 11 overs leaving a cheeky chase of 140 runs off 11 overs if we wanted the outright win. I decided to stack all the hitters up front with Coggan and myself opening the batting but after the 3rd ball of the innings and Isreal losing his middle peg and me falling shortly after to another cut shot, I thought maybe we should just conserve our wickets and just bat out the overs. Neil batted well once more with a handy 15 but then once again Bella Fitzgibbon (6*) and Lucas 23 guided us all but home.

7th Grade - Round 1 The 7th Grade squad kicked off the new season with an away game against Warnervale White at Bluehaven Oval. Warnervale won the toss and elected to bat but were in early trouble with Pete Sherwood (3-30) and Don Lavery (2-24) The Roar

Unfortunately the wheels fell off the bowling with an extraordinary number of no balls and wides loosening the grip. Eventually they finished at 6-155 off their allocated 35 overs. In reply we started off solid enough and we had solid contributions from Michael Hari (15), Brian Campbell (21*) and Dale Sinnott (16). Unfortunately no one could convert a start into a match winning innings and we were always behind where we needed to be eventual falling 30 runs shy of the total. While the team were disappointed with the result there was optimism in the camp that we are good enough to compete in this competition and we had simply not played anywhere near our potential. It was a game we should have won – against last year’s Minor Premiers! Round 2 Licking our wounds after a disappointing effort in round 1, Sevens had another away game against Kincumber at Heazlett Park, Avoca. We won the toss and elected to bat on a beautiful sunny day. After losing Mick Hari early, Pete Stuckey (27) and Lindsay

Nick Lulham picked up his first wicket for the club

Ness (47) combined for a positive 70 run stand which provided us with momentum and confidence to build an imposing total. Tommy Maurer strode to the crease and began to dispatch the 156 grams to all parts of the ground on his way to a well compiled 61 and was well supported by contributions from Dave Harvey (20) and Brian Campbell (16) which had us at an imposing 5-193 with another 30 overs to play. We were well positioned to post well over 300 but lost our last 5 wicket for only 9 runs to finish with 202 with 19 over left on day one. Great run outs by Lindsay Ness and Brandon Dale and a career best spell from Pete Sherwood left Kincumber in tatters at stumps on 7-41. Day 2 was an even better display for the boys who finished the job in the first innings to tidy up the tail for a total of 45. Enforcing the follow on the team dished up much of the same to roll them again for 55 to give us an outright victory. For some of the squad it was the first taste of victory since the 2013/2014 season. Highlights for the bowling was Pete Sherwood who took 6 wickets for the match as well as Brandon Dale who took 3 on his way to joining the 200 wickets club. Fielding highlights were aplenty with Lindsay Ness and Dave Harvey taking good catches to keep the pressure on. Well done boys on a great win!

The Season Commences

Junior Report The Cricket season has started again, and this year the Lion cubs roar even louder. We are 32% up in registrations from last with a grand total of 152 players registered so far, and this number appears to be still growing. Of these we have 64 new or returning boy and girls. This year our junior teams are: 16A which is a combined team with Lisarow. Narara is fielding 8 boys in this team. This team won the 15B last year and we are looking for a strong performance this year. 16B which were runners up in the 15Cs and being coached by Paul Moriarty again which should be strong again. Our strong 13s from last year have been split up to field a 14A coached by Stuart Owen, assisted by Hamish Millen and 14C coached by Phil Anderson with help from Stuart and willing parents. In the U12 age group we are fielding a U12A coached by Jordan and Zachary Fitzgibbon. This team is made up of our 11A which made the Semi Final last year and some very strong players from our other U11 from last year. Our U12B team which is made up with the rest of our U11 from last year and some new players is coached by Craig Smith and should be strong in the B competition. NWCC were well-represented at the Niagara Park PS Twilight Fete.

The Roar

This year the U11 age group is split up into an ‘A’ competition which is 11 per side, and a Non-Comp which is T20 format. The T20 format will give our boys and girls a great place to hone their cricket Skills. The 11A side is coached by Michael Kennedy (assisted by Chris Rowan) and we are fielding two Non Comp teams – the U11 Cubs (coached by Glenn Fender) and the U11 Kimbas (coached by Mick Cross). New this year, the U9 competition has now become ‘T20 Blast’. Our head coach is Andrew Bull, and we already have 3 teams. And of course we are our In2Cricket program is running again with Mick Post and Peter Ness coaching our future stars!! On behalf of the Junior Committee I would like to thank all our Coaches for their time, effort, patience, and expertise. Go Lions. Hamish Millen - Recorder

Round 1 at Rogers Park (Woy Woy)

Round 1 at Carrington Street (Narara)

NWCC Juniors WON (first innings)

Result: NWCC Juniors LOST (first innings)

A huge performance to start the season from this pride of little lions during Round 1 of the 11A division. Our bowling on day one against Southern Spirit was OK, however the 35 sundries helped our opponents to a score of 5 out for 66 runs. Jake Kennedy was the pick of our bowlers with 2 wickets for 2 runs. Our batting was solid in holding out an impressive front line bowling attack before Jack Kidd stepped up and scored freely in the final overs to put us ahead at 2 down for 68.

The first game of the season saw us face The Entrance; it also saw seven brand new players make their cricket debut. We won the toss and made the decision to bat, unfortunately we were in major trouble being 3 out for 3 runs after the second over of the day. However a comeback by our middle order saw us find our way to eventually reaching a score of 91 runs, before being all out. Highlights included George’s highest career score of 30 and an unbeaten 15 by Jaxon.

Day two saw our opponents finish their innings on 6/129. A very respectable total which we did well to restrict thanks to a much improved bowling performance.

Our turn to bowl, and unfortunately for us wickets were hard to come by, which saw The Entrance reach 6 for 178 runs from their allotted 50 overs. 2 wickets from Declan and a wicket each from Jon, Ryan, and Jayden. Their bowling was accompanied by some great pieces of fielding - notably from David and Jon (two catches each) and a great direct hit run-out from Brennan – these were the highlights from our bowling performance.

We started our batting in the final chase well. Jack Kidd continued batting well early on, before his dismissal for 21 saw us head to drinks at 4 down for 94 - requiring 36 runs off 60 overs. The screws were tightened by our opponents who opted to extend the spells of their top bowlers. Our desperation to force the issue saw wickets tumble before debutant Ethan Mayles (8) stepped in to give us a shot. Things looked ominous requiring 11 off 8, before another debutant Andrew Hall (10 not out) magnificently hooked consecutive beam balls to the rope to grab an excellent victory. Overall a great team effort. Michael Kennedy
